22 Teams Ready to Tackle USEA Intercollegiate Championship at Chattahoochee Hills

Lydia Kennedy and Double Dare for Auburn University at the 2018 Championships. Photo by Leslie Threlkeld.

We are just around the corner from the fourth annual USEA Intercollegiate Championship, which will be held May 17-18. After three years at the Virginia Horse Trials in Lexington, Virginia, the Championship relocates south to their new host, Chattahoochee Hills in Fairburn, Georgia.

With the Championship moving to the heart and soul of the SEC (Go Dawgs!), the event is expecting nearly 100 entries — that breaks down into 16 schools across 22 teams.

All three past winners, The University of Georgia (2016), Clemson University (2017), and Auburn University (2018) are looking to put another figurative championship ring on it.

The defending champions will be War Eagle’d out across three teams. UGA, University of Kentucky, University of South Carolina at Aiken and Transylvania University all have two teams.

The University of Louisville and Florida State University will be making their championship debut, so be sure to give them a warm welcome!

You can also cheer for: The University of Alabama, Findlay University, The University of The South, The University of Florida, North Carolina State University, Texas A&M University, Texas Christian University and Bridgewater College.

Who will you be cheering for? Let us know in the comments.

Thursday Videos from Ecovet: The Horsepesterer’s Jersey Fresh Course Walk

We’re big fans of David Frechette, aka The Horsepesterer here on EN. He’s the man with the camera who brings us a first-hand look of events up and down the East Coast with color commentary that will make you belly-laugh. This week he takes a tour around the Jersey Fresh cross country course. Take a look and stay tuned for EN’s course walk later this week.

Tuesday News & Notes from Legends Horse Feeds

We are sad to say that Whidbey Island Horse Trials will not run this summer. The event does not own the land on which the competition is held, and depends on adjacent property for stabling, dressage, and cross country tracks. Recent changes have made that land unavailable. After looking at every angle, the Organizers determined that they would not be able to hold the event this year, BUT it will return in 2020.

Whidbey Island Horse Trials is Area VII’s longest running event. They held their first competition in 1974 before facing a similar relocation dilemma in 1996. We can’t wait to see them back and better than ever! Kudos to this team for all their efforts.

Reporter’s Notebook: Kentucky in the Rearview

It honestly took over a week plus Badminton coverage to truly reflect (recover) from The Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event. The Best Weekend All Year, held April 24-28 is one of EN’s busiest, so I’d like to bring you a few odds and ends that might have been missed in our coverage as well as a look inside of the madness that is LRK3DE:

Kentucky was a different beast for me this year. I went to the former four-star for the first time as a spectator, then for a number of years as an intern for Press Officer Marty Bauman and his Classic Communications team, who organize the Media Center, and then again when I worked for the U.S. Eventing Association. Kentucky feels familiar, and I know, generally, what to expect, but that got a bit flipped this year as I found myself taking on the role of Lead Writer for Eventing Nation.

This past Sunday marked two years since I joined the team, and I’ve covered enough events that I know what to do, but the how to do it was truthfully a little daunting. Jenni Autry has fearlessly led the EN coverage in Kentucky for the last seven years, so I certainly had big shoes to fill. If you’ve never met Jenni, picture every single Marvel Universe character rolled into one — being Jenni is a superpower on its own. As I took the reins that week, I wanted to maintain the quality and flair our readers have come to expect as literally thousands and thousands of you guys visit EN every day during Kentucky.

Fortunately, the Nation Media team is quite frankly the best out there, and there was not one second that I didn’t have ample support, encouragement and friends eager to help me. I have Jenni, Leslie Wylie, Abby Powell, Maggie Deatrick and Tilly Berendt to thank for that. And don’t worry, Jenni hasn’t gone anywhere, she was on the other side of the camera this year as field reporter for USEF Network (which she did brilliantly! You can find more of her excellent coverage here).

Merrick Haydon supporting journalists the best way possible – with boxed wine. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Outside of our own happy EN bubble — there is nothing more encouraging than working alongside the many, many talented journalists and photographers who descend on Kentucky every year.

Our content came to life that week through the photos of Shannon Brinkman and her team, which included the talented Bryce Lankard and Erin Gilmore. I feel very lucky that our little corner of the Internet had such incredible visual thanks to them.

I’d also like to take a second to congratulate Jenni, Shannon and The Chronicle of the Horse’s Mollie Bailey, who all received McCauley’s Alltech ‘A+’ Awards for outstanding coverage of international equestrian sport. It’s very encouraging to see their talent and hard work recognized.

Now to the competition — I’m happy to say that this was one of the safest years in Kentucky. The one major injury was a broken collarbone sustained by Buck Davidson, and I’m happy to report that he’s on the mend. Before he underwent surgery for some new hardware, he was at the competition Sunday, coaching and supporting other riders with a smile on his face. He was rightfully awarded the The Equis Sportsmanship Award for this.

An early and uncharacteristic fall had Liz Halliday-Sharp and Deniro Z eliminated from the competition at fence three on the cross country. Liz said Deniro didn’t feel himself — he was unusually laid back and a bit lazy in the first minute — but we’re happy to hear that he’s feeling right as rain again. Liz has made her usual spring pilgrimage back to the UK, and we’re looking forward to following their summer season across the pond.

One of the biggest points of discussion over the weekend revolved around Will Coleman and Tight Lines, who were penalized by the new missed flag rule. Will posted this on his Facebook page the following Monday:

“As I understand it, the intent of this rule is to prevent horses that are trying to run out from having their head, neck, and shoulders simply held inside the flags by the riders, while their bodies don’t actually jump the obstacle. In my case, I think there was no question my horse tried to jump between the flags. Did I ride it perfectly? Absolutely not. Was the distance too long? Yes. There were lots of awkward rides there throughout the day. Did the horse jump it well? No, he is not the scopiest, and he scraped over it, and it was hairy as hell. That’s eventing. It ain’t all roses. But punishing this horse for trying his absolute hardest to the do the right thing in that moment just seems wrong, especially when the actual intent of the rule is to penalize combinations who are trying to NOT negotiate the fence and are simply wrangled between the flags. Unequivocally, that was not the case here. It was as honest an effort on the part of the horse as you can get. If you want to punish me for having one dicey fence on an 11 minute 5* track, the rest of which the horse made look like child’s play in one of only four double clear rounds, then give me a yellow card for not riding well enough.”

This new rule has received heavy criticism this spring, as riders and fans argue that it introduces an element of subjectivity to the cross country phase. EN is actively following this rule and its implementation as the season continues.

Dom Schramm and Bolytair B. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

We’ve seen a smaller pool of Kentucky first-timers in the last two years, mostly due to a more stringent qualification process, but their stories are always the most special to me because they are out there chasing a dream that many of us have shared.

I’d like to highlight Ariel Grald, who turned heads on Saturday for her incredible cross country performance that made her look like she’d been around that track a thousand times before, and Dom Schramm, who handled the seemingly overwhelming pressure of going first in the show jumping with one of the most stylish clear rounds of the day.

Lauren Kieffer and her crew. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Speaking of show jumping, there is no more emotional moment than when a competitor completes their round and comes back to join their team. A five-star completion is special to all riders whether you’re a rookie or a seasoned veteran. They say it takes a village to get a horse to this level, and that moment when the village reunites on the backside of a completion is truly special.

Welcome to the EN team, baby Thomas! Photo courtesy of Leslie Wylie.

Amid the madness that is Kentucky, I have to admit I had one ear flicked another direction for a large portion of the competition as our very own Leslie Wylie was facing an entirely different challenge — labor and delivery. In true eventer spirit, her bundle of joy arrived on cross county day. I missed Leslie’s cheer in the Media Center this year, but am so excited for her and her husband.

Working for this sport is often a labor of love, but I feel very fortunate to toil away for something I am truly passionate about. Thank you to all the readers that rode the emotional roller coaster that is Kentucky with us.

Gentleman Barton. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Gentleman Barton, 10 yr old, 16.1hh, OTTB gelding.

Lovely 10 yr old, 16.1hh, chestnut OTTB Gelding for sale. Freddy is currently competing at the preliminary level and is aimed at a CCIL** this spring. Freddy was purchased as a sale horse and has been brought along and competed by one of our working students from beginner novice thru to the preliminary level over the last year and a half. He has three lovely warmblood like gaits, is simple on the flat and is a careful jumper. He is ready to give someone lower level confidence miles with ambition to move up or be taken further, he would make a great young rider or adult amateur horse. Freddy has low mileage, after finishing on the track when he was three, he was turned out by the previous owners for roughly five years due to financial reasons. Freddy has a wonderful temperament and is sound with recent x-rays available on request. He is not one to be passed up as he is going to make someone a great horse. Freddy is currently located in Southern Pines, NC. Price upon request. Please contact Will Faudree for videos and more details.

Bear’s Pegasus. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Experienced Novice/Training OTTB for sale

For sale: Bear’s Pegasus aka Koda is a 2013 16.1h TB gelding by Court Vision. After a short racing career Koda started Eventing and has a good record with placings at Novice and completed one training level at the end of 2018. Koda is an athletic type with good movement, a great gallop and a scopey jump. Koda is soft in the bridle and the type of TB that you can put your leg on. Never looky at any show jump or xc fences, and wants to be very careful. Koda has a lot of potential for the upper levels of Eventing. He is a quirky type of TB that needs the right patient person to appreciate him. Koda would suit a good young rider, experienced amateur, or professional. Totally sound with some xrays on file. Recently was examined and flexed for baseline information with all findings being normal. No vices. USEA # 177716. Asking $18,000. Located in Charlottesville, VA.

Dodger. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Dodger: 2008 OTTB Training Level Eventer

Dodger: 2008 OTTB Eventer. 16.1 H chestnut gelding. Novice packer going successfully at Training level. No vices, super sound, loads & hauls easily, easy keeper, good with clipping and bathing, easy for farrier. Lots of scope, straight forward ride, hacks out alone without fuss, forgiving & kind, easy keeper, no maintenance issues. Would also make a great jumper. This horse is so much fun and has an amazing, sweet personality. Contact Molly for more info!

Great Mouse Detective. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Athletic, uncomplicated, and ready to win!

The Great Mouse Detective (jockey club Meetinghouse Road) is a 2012 15.3 liver chestnut thoroughbred gelding. Mouse has the movement to win in dressage, the bravery and athleticism to always go double clear, plus the temperament to put any rider at ease! He is uncomplicated to get on the bit and naturally well balanced with lovely gaits (he scored a 66% at 1st level test 2 at his first recognized dressage show). At his first Beginner Novice Event, Mouse finished on his dressage score of a 29.4 over the same cross country course that had been used for the Beginner Novice 3 Day competition, which earned him the TIP award low score for all divisions. He is confidently jumping 3ft courses including one stride lines, offset lines, and max width oxers. He will quickly move up the levels and easily has the scope for Prelim. Add to all this that he has been used in lessons for D2 level pony clubbers, he has an unbelievably willing and affectionate personality, and he is barefoot behind with great feet. A true unicorn! Mouse is located at Waredaca Farm in Laytonsville, MD.

Bella Dixie. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

NOVICE MILES WITH POTENTIAL TO GO PRELIM

For your consideration Bella Dixie or “Bella” as know In the barn is a 15.1 7yr ottb mare. Bella would be a great fit for a intermediate rider with quite seat looking to conquer the lower levels of eventing or is even fancy enough for the dressage ring! Bella has tons of novice miles and has schooled training with the potential to go prelim. Bella fits into the typical red-headed mare stereotype but with the right rider she produces a great dressage score and a superb Jump. She is currently under a working student in one of the best eventing barns in ocala. I’m open to all offers and payments/leases just looking to find the best home/fit for her. For more information please call or text Hana Sangster @ 954-695-263. Located in Florida.

Keep The Beat. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Keep The Beat- Upper Level Prospect

“Keep The Beat”, Althea is a 5-year-old OTTB, 16 hands. Unfortunately, because of my college schedule I do not have the time that this special horse deserves. I bought her when she was coming 4 and we competed last season. She went to the September GMHA Horse Trials for her first event and brought home a ribbon! She has the best mind in the barn and under saddle. Will jump anything you point her at and is floaty on the flat. Stands for the farrier and vet, clips, trailers, and hacks out alone or in a group. She is quiet enough for an adult amateur or young rider, and talented enough to move up the levels. Located in Vermont.

Guttenberg. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Talented Eventer with Upper Level Potential

Guttenberg is a 2014, 16.2h OTTB gelding. This horse has the talent to make the upper levels. He’s easy, he’s fun, and nice to look at! Has competed novice, and will have no problem moving up to training this spring. He gallops around xc courses that he’s never seen before without batting an eye. With 3 well balanced, uphill gaits, he scores well in dressage. Has been to big venues this year such as the Colorado Horse Park, the Kentucky Horse Park, Texas Rose, Holly Hill, and more. He looks at life as an adventure, ready to go wherever you ask! Always ready to come out and work, even with time off, like he didn’t miss a beat. Don’t pass up on this guy, or you’ll be competing against him! Very mild cribber, controlled with a collar.

Oliver Townend was dropping PBs left, right and center this morning at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. He smashed an incredible 19.7 in the first phase with Cillnabradden Evo — the lowest score that the horse, rider or event has ever seen. And what’s more, EquiRatings thinks he can do even better with his second entry, Ballaghmor Class.

Ecovet fly spray recently introduced an improved scent based on customer feedback: an herbal blend of lavender with a hint of tea. The updated scent does not impact Ecovet’s well-known effectiveness in the fight against flies. Learn more at eco-vet.com.

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Patrick the Mini Horse Takes on Kentucky XC

GTR Patricks Vindicator, or “Patrick” as he’s known by his friends, may only be 33 inches tall, but he’s got the heart and soul of a Grand Prix show jumper. He’s been showing off his knees-to-nose skills in demos at the Kentucky Three-Day Event since 2015 with growing popularity (He’s got nearly 30k followers on instagram!).

This year, his owner Sarah Schaaf decided to test his merit on Derek di Grazia’s formidable cross country course, and … it didn’t exactly go to plan — for Sarah that is.

Patrick: approved for cross country Sarah: needs conditioning. 😂😂😂💙😂

Posted by Patrick The miniature horse on Sunday, April 28, 2019

We’re laughing with you, not at you, Sarah! I promise. Fortunately, she was no worse for the wear, and found the bank up a lot easier.

Going up the ditch was a little easier than going down (for Sarah) 😂😂😂😂

EN met Patrick and Sarah in 2016, and you can find that story at this link.

Go Patrick. Go eventing.

Tuesday Video from SpectraVet: A Tribute to Thomas

2019 USEF CCI5* National Champions – Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg

“He’s probably not the fanciest horse here but he’s an absolute gutsy little trier and that counts for a lot.” – Boyd Martin#LRK3DE is also the US Equestrian CCI5* National Championship. Your 2019 US Champions are Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg. #BestWeekendAllYear #BestRidersAllYear

Posted by Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event on Tuesday, April 30, 2019

I won’t lie, when Boyd Martin and Christine Turner’s Tsetserleg, or Thomas as he’s known to his friends, jumped a clear show jumping round this weekend, there were tears. Practical Horseman Managing Editor Emily Daily and I were squeezing each other within an inch of our lives as he made his way around Richard Jeffery’s course — it was like we were out there jumping every fence with him. The elation of watching the two go through the finish was my favorite moment of the weekend.

Boyd admits that “Thomas” might not be the flashiest horse in the world, but he tries his heart out every single time. If anyone deserves to win the USEF CCI5* National Championship, it’s these two.

You can read more about Thomas’ backstory at this link.

The End of an Era: Belton House Will No Longer Host Horse Trials

Tom Crisp’s Liberty and Glory competing at Belton. Photo by Tilly Berendt.

It was announced today that after nearly 40 years, Belton House will no longer host horse trials. The National Trust, who owns the property, has backed out from hosting the event in an effort to conserve the Lincolnshire estate.

“The growth in scale of the event is unfortunately now at odds with the conservation management of the Grade 1 listed parkland we care for; preventing risks to the historic earthworks and buried archaeology through compaction and erosion, to the parkland wildlife, and to veteran trees and their root systems,” The National Trust said in a statement.

“We recognise the significance of the Horse Trials and their place in Belton’s recent history, and have therefore not come to the decision lightly,” Ian Cooper, General Manger for the National Trust Belton House continued. “The core purpose of the National Trust is to protect this historic place for future generations, and we must honour that commitment.”

Event management are “devastated” at the announcement, and BEDE Events, who has put on the competition for the last 15 years, had no prior knowledge of the cancellation.

“This decision was announced to us yesterday and came as a shock to the whole team. We were unaware that the future of the horse trials was in jeopardy,” BEDE Events said in a statement. “Belton has been a key fixture for many riders in the lead up to Badminton and hosts one of the best 4* international classes in the country. BEDE Events have run the event for the past 15 years and seen the event grow to become the major Spring event.”

Horse trials have been hosted at Belton House for four decades, and their March fixture was one of the most popular events on the spring calendar with over 100 entries alone in this year’s CCI4*-S class.

BEDE Events is currently looking for a new host venue.

Tuesday News & Notes from Legends Horse Feeds

Leslie Law and Voltaire de Tre’. Photo by Shelby Allen.

There were so many special moments last weekend in Kentucky, it’s nearly impossible to cover them all. If you want some riding inspo, go back and re-watch Leslie Law’s round with Tre’ Book’s Voltaire de Tre’, with whom he finished 10th.

We were so glad to have him back at the top but as his wife, Lesley, so aptly said: “for those that are happy to ‘see him back’ well… he’s always been there. Always one of the best ever. In fact he’s so much better today than all those years ago when he won the gold. His understanding of horses, his patience and compassion for them, his knowledge of the theory … he’s better today than ever.” Go Leslie and Splash!

Also, it’s Badminton week!

Photo Gallery: Kentucky Finale Through Shannon Brinkman’s Lens

He came. He saw. He conquered… again. Oliver Townend keeps the Kentucky crown for one more year. In a finish that gave the crowd a collective belly ache from nerves, here’s how it happened, as told by Shannon Brinkman and her super talented team:

Oliver Townend & Cooley Master Class Clinch Second Kentucky Victory

Oliver Townend did not have much room for error coming into the final show jumping phase, but with a jumper like Cooley Master Class, he didn’t need it. The British duo had a masterful clear round to win Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event for the second consecutive year.

Oliver and Angela Hislop’s “Coolio,” finished on a score of 25.3 — his lowest five-star finishing score this decade.

“It’s just been a huge team effort with everybody at home. The horse is pure class,  and it’s just my job to press the buttons at the right point in time, and he delivered again. So I couldn’t be more proud for the horse and the whole team at Gadlas farm,” Oliver said of Angela Hislop’s 14-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Ramiro B X The Swallow, by Master Imp).

Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Boyd Martin took the Land Rover/USEF CCI5*-L National Championship title for the very first time after producing a clear round with Christine Turner’s Tsetserleg, a 12-year-old Trakehner (Windfall x Thabana, by Buddenbrock). Finishing on a their dressage score of 27.9, this was the pair’s first double clear round at the five-star level.

“He’s a brave little horse when he gets in the ring,” Boyd said. “I’ve got to say, I do think he loves a bit of atmosphere and a crowd. Obviously last year was a bit of a disappointment year, and then this year he’s come out blazing and I just have a big sort of sigh of relief that he sort of exceeded my expectations and I think he’s only going to grow and get better from this event.”

Tim Price and Xavier Faer. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

New Zealand’s Tim Price and Xavier Faer, 13-year-old SHBGB (Catherston Liberator x Faerie Dazzler) owned by Tim, Trisha Rickards, and Nigella Hall, were the only other pair to finish on their dressage score, a 30.9, which landed them in third place. EquiRatings predicts this result will make him FEI World No. 1 by the summer.

“My guy is a bit of a surprise, you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get until you get out there. He’s spooky, so in a way he’s quite simple to work with because I know that it’s going to be there,” Tim said. “He’s jumping really well and keeping his shape even. I could feel him looking at the odd things, but he’s maintaining a good feeling so that’s what I think helps us out on a day like today. He’s an exciting horse as he gets more established at this level.”

Piggy French and Quarrycrest Echo, a 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Clover Echo x Royal China, by Cavalier Royale) owned by Jayne McGivern, also jumped clear for fourth place on a score of 33.5.

Doug Payne and Vandiver. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Doug Payne and Vandiver, 15-year-old Trakahener (Windfall x Visions of Grandeur, by Mystic Replica xx) owned by Doug, Jessica Payne and Debi Crowley, secured their first top five Kentucky finish on a score of 35.9 after a double clear round.

Switzerland’s Felix Vogg had one down and 0.8 time penalties for sixth place with Colero, a 10-year-old Westphalian’s (Captain Fire X Bonia, Bormio xx) owned by Jürgen Vogg, on a score of 39.2.

Phillip Dutton and Z, a 10-year-old Zangersheide (Asca X Bellabouche, by Babouche VH Gehucht Z) owned by the Z Partnership, had two rails to finish on 39.7 for seventh place.

Lauren Kieffer and Paramount Importance. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Lauren Kieffer was just one second over the time to finish 8th with Paramount Importance, a 12-year-old Holsteiner (Pasco x Gesche II, by Lois) owned by Jacqueline Mars, on a score of 46.

Lauren was the only rider to finish with two horses. She was also 9th with Jacqueline Mar’s Vermiculus, a 12-year-old Anglo-Arabian (Serazim X Wake Me Gently), who had one rail and 1.2 time penalties for a three-day result of 46.6.

After a decade since his last five-star, Leslie Law earned 10th place with Tre’ Book’s Voltaire de Tre’, a 10-year-old Selle Francais (Gentleman IV x Jasmina du Fresne, by Socrate de Chivre). The duo jumped clear today for a final result of 48.1.

There were 40 rails today. The Land Rover liverpool at fence 8 proved to be the most influential with 11 falling there. Five came down at fences 7 and 11a, which was the first of the triple combination. Fence 1, 6, 11c, and 13 never came down.

Of the 31 finishers, 10 jumped a double clear round today (32.2%). First-timer Dom Schramm was the very first to do so with Bolytair B.

The last two years have seen fewer average penalties in the final phase. The average for the field this year was 1.29 rails per horse and 2018 had 2.18 per horse, whereas the previous three years were higher (1.52 in 2017, 1.55 in 2016, and 2.27 in 2015).

We are so honored to be your Kentucky Headquarters. Thank you to our readers for coming along on this crazy adventure with us year after year.

All 31 Pairs Continue to Show Jumping After Kentucky Final Horse Inspection

Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

All thirty-one combinations who completed yesterday’s cross country were presented at the final horse inspection this morning, and all were accepted by the ground jury of Christina Klingspor (SWE), Martin Plewa (GER) and Mark Weissbecker (USA) at the final horse inspection of the 2019 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event.

We are pleased to report that it was a perfectly boring trot up — all the horses were on their best behavior and look keen to take on Richard Jeffery’s show jumping course this afternoon.

With no horses withdrawn, we continue with yesterday’s leaderboard intact. Oliver Townend and Cooley Master Class have an eye on a second Kentucky win, but with only 2.6 points separating him from Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg, he won’t have a pole in hand.

The show jumping begins at 1 p.m. running in reverse order of standing. Follow along with moment-by-moment updates in our Open Tread, which you can find on EN this afternoon, or keep an eye of EN’s twitter for live updates and analysis from numbers wizard Maggie Deatrick. You can also watch all the action live on USEF Network.

Let’s take a second to appreciate Joe Meyer and The Team Johnny Syndicate’s Johnny Royale, the biggest leaderboard movers after yesterday’s cross country. This horse is an off-track New Zealand Thoroughbred (His Royal Highness x Chivaney, by Tights) who had 8 starts to earn $170, and now he’s gone clear around a five-star cross country course. They had only 3.2 time penalties to move up 26 positions, from 39th to 13th.

Kentucky Cross Country: The Oliver Townend Takeover Continues

Oliver Townend and Cooley Master Class. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

The odds of Oliver Townend and Cooley Master Class taking a second consecutive win at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event are much more favorable after they sailed around Derek di Grazia’s cross country today.

Despite their lead, Oliver and “Coolio” weren’t immune to hiccups, and losing a shoe halfway didn’t help, but Angela Hislop’s 14-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Ramiro B X The Swallow, by Master Imp) had laser accuracy between the flags.

“I think I was very conscious of not having a shoe on, and we had a little bit of a slip turning back into the main lake. I felt like I was sort of balancing more than I normally would even at those straight forward fences, just not picking up those big distances just trying to keep him in balance all the while. It probably made me a touch more conservative than I normally am,” Oliver said.

“He’s actually come out a lot keener this time than he was last time and he felt quite strong for him in places but at the same time he was definitely up for it. He had his ears pricked all the way, and even when he made his own mind up over a few things he saw the flags and put himself between them”

They picked up 1.2 time penalties for a score of 25.3 — narrowing the gap between Oliver and rest of the field, as he no longer has a rail in hand going into show jumping tomorrow.

Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

The dream of an American winner rests on the shoulders of Boyd Martin and Christine Turner’s Tsetserleg, who had a textbook performance for second place. In what seems like a promising sign for the WEG partnership, they finished in a time of 11 minutes and 11 seconds to remain on their dressage score of 27.9. As the highest-placed American, Boyd also leads the Land Rover/USEF 5* National Championship, presented by MARS Equestrian.

“He gave me a fantastic ride. I actually thought the course walked a bit easier this year and I was very, very surprised when there was so much trouble. I quickly realized how wrong I was — that this was quite a tough course,” Boyd said.

“He felt a lot more seasoned this year. I feel like we’re a bit more of a partnership. He’s a real trier and he’s actually, for a sort of half-bred horse he’s got a wonderful gallop, he’s got plenty of speed, and he’s very very fit. Throughout the course he just kept trying and trying and trying and never looked for a way out.”

Tim Price and Xavier Faer. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Tim Price and Xavier Faer finished without fault and two seconds under the clock as the closest to the optimum time. The 13-year-old SHBGB (Catherston Liberator x Faerie Dazzler) owned by Tim, Trisha Rickards, and Nigella Hall carries a two-day score of 30.9.

“I was really happy with the fitness. That’s a major part of brining a horse, especially when you come from where I live. You just have to be so much more up on your game. It’s just so demanding,” he said. “I was really pleased with my horse, Xavier Fair, he just thew himself over everything. He’s sometimes a little bit, not clumsy, but he not always the most organized but he’s trying his hardest and we stayed upright in all the important places and we made it home.”

Phillip Dutton and Z. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

In expected fashion, Phillip Dutton showed up and delivered with The Z Partnership’s Z for fourth place. His characteristic forward riding made the track look like a cakewalk, keeping the 10-year-old Zangersheide (Asca X Bellabouche, by Babouche VH Gehucht Z) on a score of 31.7.

Piggy French and Quarrycrest Echo. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

WEG team gold medalists Piggy French and Quarrycrest Echo, 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Clover Echo x Royal China, by Cavalier Royale) owned by Jayne McGivern, dropped to sixth after a spate of unlucky moments had them picking up 6.4 time penalties for a current score of 33.5.

Felix Vogg and Colero, a 10-year-old Westphalian’s (Captain Fire X Bonia, Bormio xx) owned by Jürgen Vogg, sit sixth on a score of 34.4 after picking up 6.4 time penalties.

Doug Payne and Vandiver. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Doug Payne and Vandiver, who is owned in a partnership between Doug, his wife Jessica Payne and Debi Crowley, shaved seconds everywhere they could around Derek di Grazia’s — most memorably by cutting inside the shrubbery at The Normandy Bank complex — to finish just one second above the optimum time. The 15-year-old Trakahener (Windfall x Visions of Grandeur, by Mystic Replica xx) carries 35.9 points into the final phase.

Lauren Kieffer sits 8th and 9th with and Jacqueline Mars’ Vermiculus (41.1) and Paramount Importance (45.6), respectively.

Ariel Grald and Leamore Master Plan. Photo by Shannon Brinkman.

Ninth place belongs to Ariel Grald and Leamore Master Plan, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Master Imp x Ardragh Bash, by Cavalier Royale) owned by Anne Eldridge, as the highest placed CCI5*-L first-timers on a score of 45.7.

Holly Bennett-Award and Jollybo, a 15-year-old British Sport Horse (Jumbo – Polly Coldunnell, by Danzig Connection) owned by Hawley and the Jollybo Syndicate, are currently the best placed Canadian pair in 11th place on a score of 46.2.

What The Numbers Say

Today’s cross country jumping clear rate of 70.3% is the highest we’ve seen in five years. 83.8% of the pack completed with 8.1% going clear inside the time. But, with perfect footing and great weather, we didn’t see as many double clears as expected as those without jump penalties had an average of 4.21 penalties more than expected.

Matt Flynn and Wizzerd. Photo by Shannon Brinkman.

All four CCI5*-L debutants completed the cross country phase today: Ariel Grald (9th – 45.7), Matt Flynn and Wizzerd (21st – 54.8), Chris Talley and Unmarked Bills (24th – 58.4), and Dom Schramm and Bolytair B (31st – 92.6).

Joe Meyer and Johnny Royale were the biggest movers of the day, jumping 26 spots from 39th to 13 on a clear round with only 3.2 time penalties.

There were 15 jumping issues on course today: Two rider falls, one fence-related horse fall, one non-fence related horse fall, one frangible pin, one missed flag, and nine refusals.

The day was off to a rocky start with the first three all falling. Pathfinders Caroline Martin and Islandwood Captain Jack came to grief at the B element of The Normandy Bank. Caroline is fine aside from some soreness, and she decided to withdraw her other entry, Danger Mouse.

Buck Davidson broke his collarbone when he fell from Park Trader also at 20b. He then withdrew his two remaining rides, Jak My Style and Copper Beach. Mara DePuy also withdrew Congo Brazzaville C before the start of cross country.

Liz Halliday-Sharp and Deniro Z fell at fence three, an open oxer. Both were up quickly and are reporting no injuries. Colleen Loach and Qorry Blue d’Argouges slipped and fell as they turned away from The Hollow at fence 13. Both are injury-free.

Will Coleman and Tight Lines were the only pair penalized after missing a flag at fence 11a, the Rolex Grand Slam Challenge complex, which was a skinny in the water.

The Head of the Lake at 18abc proved to be the most influential combination on course with five stops. Hallie Coon and Celien had a stop at 18a. Erin Sylvester and Paddy The Caddy had a stop at 18 b, the bank out of water. Three had a fly by of the final element, which was a brush fence on a bounce distance from the bank up: Buck Davidson and Park Trader, Hallie Coon and Celien, and Australia’s Hazel Shannon and Willingapark Clifford. Hallie retired here after her second stop.

Two stopped at the logs into the MARS Sustainability Bay (5a), Sharon White with Cooley On Show, who retired after two stops here, and Daniela Moguel and Cecelia.

Dom Schramm and Bolytair B had a stop at fence 3, an open oxer, where they also broke a frangible pin.

To relive all the action with color commentary, check out our Open Thread. The final horse inspection will be held tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. USEF Network will pick up with their wall-to-wall coverage at the start of show jumping at 1 p.m. Click here to see how you can watch live.
