Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Top Training Tip from Harry Meade

Upper-level riders use a variety of techniques to maintain their horses — more than we can list, but one that’s not often mentioned is weight tracking. Harry Meade keeps tabs on the weight of all his horses, and his top horses are weighed each day. In this video, he walks us through why this is an underutilized tool in eventing.

Tuesday Video from SpectraVet: Bodexpress’ Break for Freedom

War of Will should’ve been the big headline this weekend at the Preakness Stakes, but it was Bodexpress, the horse who dumped his jockey John Velazquez and still finished the race riderless, who stole the show. Hanging near the end of the pack, he kept on the full 1 3/16 miles, until retired jockey Kaymarie Kreidel managed to catch him. That’s a horse who definitely understands his job!

Auburn University Doubles Down on USEA Intercollegiate Championship

Emma Bush and Just Todd. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Orange was the new black this weekend at the Fourth Annual USEA Intercollegiate Championship where Auburn University won for the second consecutive year.

Their Orange team of Dorothy Dreelin & Subtle Dream Unveiled (N), Aubrey Wagner & Fernhill Sinatra (T), Sallie Johnson & Things to Ponder (T), and Isabel Franklin & Anchorman (N) finished strong today, keeping on their overnight team score of 92.601.

“I just wanted to come out and have fun and have a good team experience, and we were able to pull off a win again! It was just nice to come out here at our home event and get to kind of show everybody what we’re made of, and that we’re a great team and we work really well together,” said Aubrey Wagner, who was a member of the 2018 championship team.

Auburn University’s Blue Team finished fourth with riders Cari Budny, Maris Barden, Sallie Johnson and Jennifer Mulholland.

Kentucky Wildcats. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The University of Kentucky was a force to be reckoned with, and the wildcats claimed both second and third place with their Blue Team (97.857) and Wildcats Team (102.875), respectively.

The Kentucky Blue team included Macy Clark, Jackie LeMastus, Elizabeth Silvia-Chandley and Mia Fox, and the Kentucky Wildcats was made up of Jackie LeMastus & Exmoor Denver (P), Claire Rowlands & Category 5 (P), Katie Hargerty & Dutch Harbor (T) and Cora Severs & Cuervo (T).

Bailey Hamilton and Chantilly Lace and A Pretty for USC Aiken. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The University of South Carolina at Aiken was fifth. Their team of Bailey Hamilton, Virginia Quarles, Sophie Miller and Kristen LaVassar moved up from seventh overnight to finish on a cumulative score of 106.5.

The joint team of The University of Louisville and The University of Virginia finished in sixth place on a score of 106.92 with team members Paige Thompson, Darby Weerstra, Grace Lakeman and Abigail Winfree.

Texas A&M University were the winners of the coveted spirit award. This award had new judging criteria this year which included a relay race, cross country fans/tailgaters, barn decorations and team entertainment at the competitors party. It was a tight race — with Texas A&M decked out all weekend in their Gig ‘Em overalls and Kentucky signing loud and proud in every corner of the event. Ultimately these two teams were separated by one single point.

The award-winning teams had a special treat this afternoon as they were given ribbons and prizes on the very same podium that was used at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Thank you to Hugh Lochore for organizing a top notch competition, and to Leslie Threlkeld, the chair of the USEA Intercollegiate Committee, who has gone above and beyond to grow this program. Well done to all the colleges and universities who fielded teams.

War Eagle. Go eventing.

Karl Slezak & Fernhill Wishes Win Chatt Hills Advanced

Karl Slezak and Fernhill Wishes. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Karl Slezak’s season hit a speed bump when he broke his arm earlier this spring, but now he’s back on top — literally as he won the Advanced this weekend at Chattahoochee Hills with Fernhill Wishes.

Karl and the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Chacoa x  KEC Galway Bay, by Gildawn Diamond), who is owned by Karl and Kirk Hoppner, were the only pair to jump clear this morning around Chris Barnard’s track. They finished one second over the time for a final result of 35 — 12 points ahead of the pack.

Allie Knowles had one down with each of Katherine O’Brien’s horses, Morswood and Ms. Poppins, to finish second (47) and fourth (55.7), respectively.

Ellie O’Neal and Zeta were third after having one pole down and 0.8 time penalties. Their final score is 53.7. Kirsten Buffamoyer and Hurry Murray had three down and 3.2 time penalties to end the weekend in fifth on 71.6 points. Joe Meyer and Buccaneer were sixth with a three-phase result of 71.7.

Alex Green and The Fernhill Fox were 7th (77.4), Julie Wolfert and Iowa Lot Of Money were 8th (95.6), and Jade Anderson finished 9th and 10th with Fernhill Q and Fernhill Oreo.

Alex Green withdrew her other ride, Fernhill Limited Edition, who was fourth after cross country. Overnight leaders Whitney Mahloch and Military Mind ran into trouble in the show jumping where two stops ended their weekend in elimination.

The Intermediate was won by Ellie O’Neal with her promising up-and-comer Zick Zack. They had one rail down to finish on 42.1. Allie Knowles piloted Kilcannon High Society into second place on a final double clear round, and Hillary Irwin was third with Harry Cotter on a score of 43.3.

Students came from as far as Texas to contest the Fourth Annual USEA Intercollegiate Championship at Chattahoochee Hills, and it certainly has been one for the record books. The scores are tight, and it will likely come down to the very last riders today. War Eagle! Auburn Leads Day 1 Charge at Intercollegiate Champs

Team Auburn! Photo by Shelby Allen

Auburn University had a special visitor yesterday at the USEA Intercollegiate Championships, Aubie the Tiger! With their famed mascot in the flesh, the defending champions marched straight into the lead after day one on a team score of 92.6.

The leading team includes Dorothy Dreelin & Subtle Dream Unveiled (N), Aubrey Wagner & Fernhill Sinatra (T), Sallie Johnson & Things to Ponder (T), and Isabel Franklin & Anchorman (N).

Sallie Johnson and Things to Ponder. Photo by Shelby Allen.

“My horse was incredible. On cross-country, he was an absolute beast and it felt really good all the way around,” team member Sallie Johnson said. “It’s awesome being here with Auburn. As a senior, and someone who’s been to the Intercollegiate Championship every year, it’s so cool to see how it’s developed. We went from having one team the first year, to one again the second, two the third, and now having three full teams is pretty cool to see how far we’ve come.”

Claire Rowlands & Category 5. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The University of Kentucky Wildcats are hot on their heels in seconds place on a cumulative score of 93.8 with riders Jackie LeMastus & Exmoor Denver (P), Claire Rowlands & Category 5 (P), Katie Hargerty & Dutch Harbor (T) and Cora Severs & Cuervo (T).

In red in black, The University of Georgia’s team of Erin Jarboe & Ballygriffin Cool Guy (T), Annabelle Kremer & Delgado (T), Emily Cardin & Polar Express (T), and Sierra Shurtz & Zach Eyed Pea (T) hold steady in third place on a score of 94.3.

Scores are tight, and there’s not much room for error. There’s plenty to be played for today! Here’s who else is in the hunt:

The University of Kentucky’s Blue Team is fourth on 94.4 points with riders Macy Clark, Jackie LeMastus, Elizabeth Silvia-Chandley and Mia Fox.

The University of Auburn’s Blue Team is fifth on 95.8 points with Cari Budny, Maris Barden, Sallie Johnson and Jennifer Mulholland.

The University of Louisville / Virginia Tech team is sixth on 98.4 points with Paige Thompson, Darby Weerstra, Grace Lakeman and Abigail Winfree.

The University of South Carolina at Aiken’s Red Team is seventh on 100.8 points with Bailey Hamilton, Virginia Quarles, Sophie Miller and Kristen LaVassar.

Auburn’s Tiger Team is eighth on 105.2 points, The University of South Carolina at Aiken’s Blue team is ninth on 106.5 points, and Transylvania University is 10th on 106.6 points.

Whitney Mahloch and Military Mind. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Whitney Mahloch and Military Mind are the day one leaders of the Advanced division at Chattahoochee Hills.

Winners of the first phase, Whitney and “Milo,” a 13-year-old off-track Thoroughbred (Military x Smart Balance, by Beau Genius) are the only pair to remain on their dressage score — a 29.3 — after Hugh Lochore’s cross country.

Karl Slezak and Fernhill Wishes. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Karl Slezak and Fernhill Wishes, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Chacoa x  KEC Galway Bay, by Gildawn Diamond) owned by Karl and Kirk Hoppner, currently hold second place. They were second fastest in the group, picking up 3.2 time penalties for a score of 34.60.

Allie Knowles sits third with Katherine O’Brien’s Morswood on a score of 43, which includes 11.2 time penalties. Allie’s first ride, Katherine O’Brien’s Ms. Poppins, is also sixth after a clear round and 15.6 time penalties. Alex Green holds fourth place with Fernhill Limited Edition on 46.20 points. Alex is also 8th with The Fernhill Fox on a score of 59.8.

Kirsten Buffamoyer and Hurry Murray. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Pathfinder Ellie O’Neal had 17.6 time penalties with Zeta for fifth place on 48.9 points. Kirsten Buffamoyer piloted Hurry Murray around fault free with 14.8 time penalties to sit 7th.

Following a wooded bridge crossing, the offset walls at 7AB proved to be the most influential. Lindsey Lanier fell here from Severance Pay. Ninth-placed Joe Meyer, 10th-placed Julie Wolfert and Iowa Lot Of Money, and 12th-placed Jade Anderson with Fernhill Oreo each had one stop at the B element, and 11th-placed Nicole Aden had a stop at the A element with Truckee Bash. Nicole was ultimately eliminated after a stop at 14, the first of two corners in the back field. Jesslyn Woodall’s weekend ended early at the 15, the second of these tricky corners with The Luckdragon.

Weekend Instagram Roundup: EN Takes Jersey Fresh

Jersey Fresh concluded yesterday with a fairytale story and a lot of rain, but Saturday was a picture perfect day for cross country. I can’t remember the last time we could enjoy a beautifully sunny day at this event, and that is something to be celebrated! Here’s what Eventing Nation was up to on Instagram this weekend at JFI3DE:

Fylicia Barr Wins Jersey Fresh CCI4*-L with $500 Craigslist Mare

Fylicia Barr and Galloway Sunrise. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Galloway Sunrise has been a horse of many firsts for 24-year-old Fylicia Barr. She was the first person to sit on “Sunny” after she and her mother found the mare listed on Craiglist for $500. Since then, they’ve tackled it all together: from their first Preliminary to their first International win, which they accomplished today in the CCI4*-L at Jersey Fresh.

Only one rail came down in an otherwise masterful ride to give Fylicia and Shannon Barr’s 10-year-old American Warmblood a final score of 38.2.

Fylicia Barr and Galloway Sunrise. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

“We’ve always struggled with the show jumping, but my eye was in and she was just jumping out of her skin for me. I’m really pleased with her,” Fylicia said.

“Despite the weather, she came in and put down nearly a foot perfect show jump round. I’ve brought her along from the ground up. It’s been a long time coming, and I feel like all the pieces came together this weekend.”

Once she gets over the butterflies from this fairytale weekend, Fylicia plans to keep chipping away this year with eyes on Kentucky in 2020.

Arden Wildasin and Il Vici. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Four-star long debutants, Arden Wildasin and Il Vici, a 15-year-old Thoroughbred (Galileo x Ladyeri, by Salieri), who is owned by Arden and Sarah Wildasin nailed a second place finish. They tapped one rail for a three-phase score of 43.2.

“Coming into today, that rail is my fault — I have so much more to learn, and I didn’t have my balance, so I slipped the reins and he tried. That was just unfortunate, but he was amazing. I am so grateful to have him, and I’m so grateful to have my mom and dad who have supported all my journeys in eventing,” she said. “I’ve learned to enjoy every moment. That’s the biggest thing: no matter what happens you enjoy it, because you never know when it’s going to end.”

Meghan O’Donohue had one rail and one extra second of time for third place with Palm Crescent on a score of 45.2.

Jacob Fletcher and Van Gough finished on a score of 51 for fifth place, and Caroline Martin was sixth with Danger Mouse on 57.9 points.

Of the 11 finishers, only 2 jumped clear over Chris Barnard’s track: Emily Beshear with Olney Uncle Sam, who finished 6th, and Allison Springer with Sapphire Blue B, who finished 7th.

A massive thank you is due to Amy Flemming-Waters for her beautiful photos this weekend.

From the Hunter Ring to Jersey Fresh: Starr Witness’ Path to Eventing Domniation

Doug Payen and Starr Witness. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Doug Payne won the Jersey Fresh CCI3*-L this morning aboard Starr Witness, a horse who only just began her eventing career 15 months ago.

The 8-year-old Dutch mare (Chello II x Carmen, by Veneur) came into Doug Payne’s stable in the winter of 2018 thanks to Emil Spadone, who thought she wasn’t well suited for the hunter world.

“He had sent her down and thought she was too hot be a show hunter, but he neglected to tell us she was a chestnut mare. She’s amazing, right? Better yet, he sent her papers and she’s listed as dark brown,” he said.

Doug couldn’t ignore her talent, so he, Laurie McRee and Catherine Winter partnered to buy the mare. She took to eventing quickly, finishing second at her first event, the Open Training at Paradise Farm in February of last year.

“She had already jumped through 1.20, so you didn’t necessarily have to teach her how to jump, but you had to teach her the tricks of cross country basically. She came along pretty quickly, and came up to Prelim, and that was good. Then I figured we should take a shot at the Pan Ams because she was going so well,Lori and Catherine, with the help of Emil, took a shot. It’s a really exciting time,” he said.

This duo won the CCI3*-S at The Fork earlier this spring before today’s success. In both competitions, they finished on their dressage score.

“This sport’s not easy at all — it can be very frustrating, and at this point, over time, we’ve developed a great group of horses who are coming along. At this point it becomes super fun because frankly no one comes here to lose.”

Doug also finished fourth (33) with Cascor after a double clear effort.

Lynn Symansky and RF Cool Play. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Overnight leaders Lynn Symansky and RF Cool Play, a 10-year-old German Sport Horse (Condors Champion x Roxana, by Radscha) owned by The Donner Syndicate, had one rail down to finish second on a score of 31.1. Lynn was also fifth with SpectraVET Tempranillo, who finished on her dressage score of 34.9.

Will Faudree and Caleste. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Will Fuadree secured a double clear round with Caeleste, a 9-year-old Holsteiner mare (Contender X Happygolucky, by Lucky Lionell) owned by Jennifer Mosing and Sterling Silver Stables, for third place on a three-day result of 31.7.

Nilson Moreira da Silva and Rock Phantom finished 6th on 36.6. Phillip Dutton was 7th with Sea of Clouds (38.5). Heather Jane Morris and Jos UFO De Quidam were 8th on a score of 39.1. Andi Lawrence finished 9th aboard Cooley Northern Mist (39.20), and Robin Walker was 10th with SBT Barolo on a score of 39.5.

Thank you to Amy Flemming-Waters Photography, whose beautiful photos you’ve seen on EN all weekend. And to all the volunteers and staff who put on this event, even today in the pouring rain.

All Accepted at Jersey Fresh Final Horse Inspection

All 25 combinations that presented at this morning’s soggy Jersey Fresh final horse inspection were accepted.

The CCI3*-L Ground Jury of Bobby Stevenson (USA), Valerie Vizcarrando-Pride (USA) and Janice Conlon (USA) passed the entire field of 14, who will continue onto show jumping at 9:30 a.m.

Doug Payne withdrew third-placed Quantum Leap before the trot up, citing a heal grab that has caused some soreness.

Nilson Moreira da Silva was ultimately given a technical elimination on yesterday’s cross country with Magnum’s Martini. He was originally given 15 penalties at fence 8c, a skinny in the Jersey Fresh water, but according to the ground jury it should have been elimination.

Sue Baxter (GBR), the President of the CCI4*-L Ground Jury, shared this statement: “Horse No. 79 was eliminated at fence 8c during the cross country. His score was incorrectly posted on the results sheets. This was a clerical error. Once the Ground Jury was aware of this, it was corrected.”

The eleven remaining CCI4*-L horses all continue to the final phase. They will show jump over Chris Barnard’s track starting at 11 a.m.

Coleman & Cooke Come Out on Top at Jersey Fresh

Will Coleman and Off The Record. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Will Coleman secured his second CCI4*-S win with Off The Record today at Jersey Fresh after a full day of both show jumping and cross country.

Will and the 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse (VDL Arkansas X Drumagoland Bay, by Ard Ohio) owned by the Off the Record Syndicate produced two clear jumping rounds today, coming through the final finish flags with 4.8 time penalties as they gear up for the CCI4*-L at Tattersalls in Ireland next month.

“I thought all three horses jumped really well this morning in the show jumping — Chris (Barnard) builds a great track, and I couldn’t really ask them to jump any better,” Will said. “Off The Record is getting pretty experienced at that level, and he made pretty light work of it honestly. It felt really good. We’re aiming him at Tattersalls in Ireland in a couple weeks. I think he felt ready to do it,” he said.

Allie Knowles and Sound Prospect. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Allie Knowles and Sound Prospect, a 17-year-old Thoroughbred (Eastern Echo x Miner’s Girl, by Miner’s Mar) owned by Sound Prospect LLC, climbed the leaderboard today. Thirteenth after dressage, they found themselves in 6th after a double clear show jumping and finally in second after laying down the fastest round in the division to finish on a score of 42.2.

“Sound Prospect and I have been a team for a lot of years now. He’s a very experienced horse. I have him entered at Luhmühlen, and this was sort of a test because we’ve had an off season together — a bit of bad luck and jumping wrong fences — to go out and put it to him and say, ‘OK. You’re going to get around this fast and this should be quite easy,’ and it was exactly that. He just skipped around. It was not surprisingly the fastest time of the day because I put it to him to do that,” she said.

Allie also finished 4th with Nancy Elberty’s Princess B. She and the added 12.4 time penalties for a three-day score of 45.1.

Overnight leaders Lauren Kieffer and D.A. Duras, an 11-year-old KWPN gelding (Numero Uno X Medoc, by Quattro) owned by Jacqueline Mars and Debbie Adams, prioritized confidence over speed on today’s cross country as they added 12.4 time penalties to drop to third.

Boyd Martin finished fourth with his homebred Ray Price after one rail and 8 cross country time penalties gave them a final score of 45.4.

Dana Cooke and FE Mississippi. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

As one of the final competitors of the day, the CCI3*-S win was Dana Cooke’s for the taking. Dressage leaders Boyd Martin and Luke 140 had already picked up 5.2 time penalties, but Dana needed to finished inside the time to edge ahead, which she did for the win aboard FE Mississippi.

Dana and the 9-year-old (Wurttemberger Cassini II x Liastra, by Legaat) owned by the FE Mississippi Syndicate close out the weekend on their dressage score of 30 to beat out the 55-entry class — a favorable result as this pair are eying to represent Canada at the Pan American Games this August.

“I wasn’t really planning to go for time. They were announcing right before we were going that if myself or Mia Farley made the time we could beat Boyd. I tried to ignore that because I didn’t want to make a stupid mistake, but actually my mare is better if I ride her forward and a little faster because I don’t have to pull,” she said. “I kind of heard my minute markers go off but I wasn’t really paying much attention to it. My six-minute marker went off and I was like, ‘I could actually make it!’ It was just before the last fence so I pushed for home. It was awesome!”

Despite a few time penalties, second place was a strong result for Boyd and his newest ride, Luke 140, an 8-year-old Holsteiner (Landos X Omega VI, by Limbus) owned by The Luke 140 Syndicate. They jumped clear in the morning over Chris Barnard’s track, and found smooth sailing around the cross country.

Alex Baugh was third aboard Ballingowan Pizazz, a 17-year-old Irish Sport Horse (OBOS Quality x Rocklea, by Leabeg) owned by Altorac Farm. Their only penalties were coming in 6 seconds over the optimum time to finish on a three-day result of 32.6.

Fylicia Barr & Lynn Symansky Rule Jersey Fresh CCI4*/3*-L Cross Country

Fylicia Barr and Galloway Sunrise. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Capt. Mark Phillips’ CCI4*-L cross country course unseated eventing veterans and paved the way for new faces to take over the leaderboard. By day’s end, Fylicia Barr and Galloway Sunrise emerged as the front runners for this event’s premier division.

Fylicia and Shannon Barr’s 10-year-old American Warmblood mare have come along way since “Sunny” was only a feral horse she found on Craigslist for $500, but today they sailed around the track, coming home inside the time to lead the class on a score of 34.4.

“She is usually pretty fast and clear — that’s usually where she shines, so I was hoping,” Fylicia said. “I came in and I looked at my watch and saw we were clear and I was just really happy to finish the day on our dressage score. It definitely wasn’t easy with her in the beginning — she mad us work pretty hard for it, but I learned a lot from her, and here we are now.”

Arden Wildasin and Il Vici. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Making her first appearance at this level, Arden Wildasin takes the reins on second place with Il Vici, a 15-year-old Thoroughbred (Galileo x Ladyeri, by Salieri), who is owned by Arden and Sarah Wildasin.

“This was my first time ever doing a CCI4* Long. He’s a fantastic horse. Throughout the years we’ve had great experiences, and today was one of our days of going out there and doing jump after jump. It was one of the best rides — I knew, I had this land to gallop in, and I was just going to cherish just jumping through the double corners because I thought, ‘If this goes well, I’m good!'”

This pair had the fastest round of the bunch — a full 30 seconds inside the time. “I went through the finish flags and looked down at my clock and said, ‘I didn’t realize I was going that fast!’ Because it didn’t feel fast. It felt smooth and it felt like he was listening to all the cues and we were just collecting jumps around the course,” she said.

Doug Payne and Quantum Leap. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Doug Payne’s up-and-coming string came to shine this weekend at Jersey Fresh with Quantum Leap leading the way in third place of the four-star long. The 8-year-old RPSI (Quite Capitol x Report to Sloopy, by Corporate Report) owned by Doug and his wife Jessica, was bred in the U.S. by Elizabeth Callahan and has been beautifully produced by Doug since the beginning. Today he added just 4.4 time penalties for a current score of 40.1.

Looking down the leaderboard, Meghan O’Donohue and Palm Crescent sit fourth on a score of 40.8 after finishing clear just one second over the time. Jacob Fletcher and Van Gough dropped to fifth after picking up 12 time penalties for a two-day score of 45. Caroline Martin and Danger Mouse had 17.6 time penalties for sixth place (53.90).

Six of the 16 starters finished clean for a 37.5% clear jumping rate. Of those only two, Fylicia and Arden, managed to do it inside the time. The most influential element on course was the Jersey Shore water which saw one horse fall, one rider fall, two stops and a missed flag. At 8c, the final, skinny element in the water, Hannah Sue Burnett popped off Lukeswell. Allison Springer had at stop at this fence with both her rides, Sapphire Blue B and Business Ben. Nilson Moreira da Silva and Magnum’s Martini added 15 penalties here for missing the flag. Phillip Dutton and his horse Fernhill Singapore had a horse fall at the Jersey Shore, fence 26, an angled brush. Phillip has commented that Singapore is suspected of having a “wind issue” and will is being thoroughly evaluated. Otherwise, there are no injuries reported.

Issues also popped up elsewhere in the course. Overnight leaders Emily Beshear and Olney Uncle Sam had a heartbreaking runout at 18b, a corner by the back water. They’re now 7th on a score of 62.1. Boyd Martin and Contestor as well as Clayton Fredericks and FE Stormtrooper also fell victim to this fence. Clayton elected to retire here after his refusal.

Anna Loschiavo and Spartacus Q had a runout at fence 15, a corner in the back field. Nilson also had a stop with his other horse, Cash, at 11a, a table, in the front field.

Lynn Symansky and RF Cool Play. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Lynn Symansky delivered two double clear performances around the Jersey Fresh CCI3*-L cross country course to kept hold of her lead in the CCI3*-L division aboard RF Cool Play and to move into 6th with SpectraVET Tempranillo.

RF Cool Play, a 10-year-old German Sport Horse (Condors Champion x Roxana, by Radscha) owned by The Donner Syndicate, motored around Morgan Rowsell’s track eight seconds inside the time to remain on his dressage score of 27.3.

“[Coolio] came to do his Pan Am qualifier. He’s done this level before, so today felt super easy for him, as it should,” she said. Jersey Fresh is one of the final qualifiers for the Pan American Games, which will take place Aug. 1-4 in Lima, Peru. Click here to view the full list of qualifiers.

As far as team selection, Lynn plans to give it her best effort, but she’s keeping the horse in mind. “Really, it’s the only thing everyone has in common — that they all applied to go to the Pan Am Games. It’s something to check off a list and then keep going with what your own plans. If your plan is just to make teams, then at the end of the day you loose the big picture,” she said. “I did it for the horse’s overall education and fitness as well because it was an easier run than he would normally do, but he got a late start to the year.”

Stablemate SpectraVET Tempranillo, an 8-year-old KWPN owned by Lynn, finished bang on the optimum time to carry 34.9 points into the final phase.

Doug Payne and Starr Witness. Photo by Amy Flemming-Waters Photography.

Less than a rail behind are Doug Payne and Starr Witness. The 8-year-old Dutch mare (Chello II x Carmen, by Veneur) Doug owns with Laurie McRee and Catherine Winter, was one of the first out of the startbox today, adding nothing to her dressage score of 30.1.

Like Lynn, Doug also finished both his horses clear inside the time. Stephen Blauner’s Cascor is fourth on a score of 33.

Will Faudree and Caeleste moved from fifth to third after a double clear effort. The 9-year-old Holsteiner mare (Contender X Happygolucky, by Lucky Lionell) owned by Jennifer Mosing and Sterling Silver Stables had the fastest round of the division to continue on a score of 31.7.

We saw two falls in the CCI3*-L: Alex Baugh fell from Mr. Candyman at fence 18, the open rails, and Phillip Dutton had a horse fall with Fernhill Pick Pocket at the corner at fence 20. Both horses and riders are OK. Jacob Fletcher also had an early end to his weekend with Mischief Managed after jumping the wrong table at fence 12, for which he received a technical elimination.

With perfect weather and good going, we saw quite a few speedy founds in this group. Thirteen of the 17 starters jumped clean with 10 of those also coming home inside the time.

Please note that the schedule has changed for tomorrow. The final horse inspection will be held at 8:00 a.m., followed by the CCI3*-L show jumping at 9:30 a.m., and the CCI4*-L at 11:00 a.m.

Thank you to Amy Flemming for the gorgeous photos you’ve seen this weekend on EN. Pack your rain gear for tomorrow, we may be going swimming at the final horse inspection!
