Thursday Video from Ecovet: Happy Retirement, NZB Campino

Mark Todd announced last week the retirement of his five-star partner, NZB Campino. “Kinky,” a 17-year-old Hanoverian, had an uncharacteristic stop early in the Badminton cross country course earlier this season, and the New Zealand Olympian decided it was time for retirement from International competition.

Mark Todd’s statement:

“Having made the wise call to ‘pull himself up’ at Badminton early on and not being sound back at the stables we have done some further investigation and whilst Kinky is now sound and happily out in the paddock we have made the decision to retire him from International Eventing. He has been and remains a wonderful friend and he will now be Carolyn’s hack and look after the youngsters on the farm. And be pampered by Jess Wilson!”

Between an Olympic team bronze medal in 2012 and six CCI5*-L completions, Kinky had one hell of a career. Take a look back through these videos.

Ecovet fly spray recently introduced an improved scent based on customer feedback: an herbal blend of lavender with a hint of tea. The updated scent does not impact Ecovet’s well-known effectiveness in the fight against flies. Learn more at eco-vet.com.

FEI rules in our sport can often be confusing. Aside from the eventing-specifics, there’s also the FEI Dressage and Jumping to consider. Romanian eventer Viorel Bubau is one who would agree as he was eliminated for boots at Strzegom this spring, only to have the ruling overturned when the rule cited actually didn’t exist. Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Training Level Troopers

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN each week. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

Training level is where things can start getting interesting. Horses have to be smart and quick enough to handle the beginnings of technical combinations, but nothing gets too too serious yet. If you’re looking for a horse who’s right in this sweet spot, check out these six available on Sport Horse Nation:

Monty’s Revenge. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Fun novice/training level gelding sadly for sale!

Monty’s Revenge is an 8 y/o, 16h unraced TB gelding. He has competed extensively at novice and training level with multiple wins to his name. He has also competed 2nd level dressage helping me achieve scores towards my bronze medal.
Monty is the perfect horse for an AA or jr wanting to get miles at novice and training with potential for prelim. He is uncomplicated all 3 phases.
I have enjoyed him immensely but my busy work schedule and human child prevent me from riding and competing him consistently.
Monty is an easy keeper and lives outside 24/7 but also enjoys the luxury of a stall. He is a cribber but controlled with a collar. Located near Athens, Ga. Asking 20k but negotiable to great home.

Billy McArthur. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

7 yo Training Level Import

Billy McArthur is a 16 hand gelding bred at the Billy Stud in England. He is by Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve (sire of Congo Brazzaville C) and his damn is full sister to William Funnell’s 1.60 meter show jumper. Billy has great paces and is an extremely scopey jumper. He is a kick ride and goes in a snaffle in all three phases. Most recently won the training division at Fair Hill on his dressage score of 26.9. Located in Pennsylvania.

SW Lhittle Rascal. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

SW Lhittle Rascal

16.3 2010 Black Oldenburg gelding. Rascal has won several training events with the scope and talent to go to the top! He spent his early years in the Dressage ring but loves jumping and XC to much to stay there. He would be perfect for an ambitious young rider or professional looking to go all the way and win. Rascal can be a bit sharp so would not suit a timid rider. In professional training and competition program with Sinead Halpin and Tik Maynard. Motivated seller. Located in Florida.

Reveille. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Talented 2013 Training level Eventer with top potential

REVEILLE – `Grey 16.3 hand 2013 Thoroughbred gelding by Unbridled Energy. This athletic youngster is competing at the Training level now, and has the potential to go to the top levels. He is a good mover and a talented jumper, brave and scopey. He is well balanced and light on his feet. He is smart and learns quickly, and has a great temperament. He is a super upper level prospect, but would also be suitable for an ambitious amateur who wants a talented partner. Photos and video: www.teamwindchase.com/Reveille.htm
We also have many other excellent horses available, from green prospects to experienced Eventers. Visit www.teamwindchase.com/forsale.htm for more info.

Evelina. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Evelina- 2009 Dutch Mare

Evelina is a 15.3 2009 imported bay KWPN mare (Krack C x Lisette, by Caritas). Evelina was purchased as a first riding horse to learn on by a junior rider who took her to her first shows this year. After their beginner novice debut, they completed two novice level events together. She has successfully moved up to training level, finishing on her dressage score with both a young rider and a professional. Evelina is ready to continue up the levels and has impressed us with her scope, gaits, and trainability. Three good gaits, very brave XC and careful in the show jumping. Evelina would be suitable to continue with a more advanced child or be developed by an ambitious rider as a FEI prospect. Sadly for sale as rider is off to school! Located in Pennsylvania.

Tullabeg Dilson. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Tullabeg Dilson

Dilson is a 6-year-old 16.2hh ISH gelding. He is by Dilshaan xx out of a Ramiro B mare. Dilson was imported as a 4-year-old and has competed successfully through training level eventing and 3’6″ jumpers. He is straight forward to ride with great paces and a super jump. Dilson has potential to go to the top in eventing or jumping. Top class horse with a big future! Located in Pennsylvania.

This spring I’ve been slowly bringing my semi-retired event horse back into work. There have already been hills and valleys — he’s a spooky guy that loves nothing more than a buck and spin, so getting him back into full form has been interesting to say the least. Hills and fitness work finally paid off this week as we enjoyed our first jump lesson in nearly two years, and it felt like we never skipped a beat. Time to go back to work, fat pony!

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: A Rideability Exercise with Boyd Martin

Time to rearrange the jumps in your arena. Our friends at the United States Eventing Association and Event Clinics have shared some footage from Boyd Martin’s show jumping clinic at Wheatland Farm in Purcellville, Va. earlier this month. In his clinic, Boyd focused on rideability. This exercise features a serpentine of sorts with three verticals, separated by five strides set on alternating bending lines, which asked horses to be quick on their feet, followed by a six stride line where riders had to focus on going more forward.

Don’t forget to follow the U.S. Eventing Association on Facebook for more great content like this.

Tuesday News & Notes from Legends Horse Feeds

Memorial Day is more than just the kick off to the summer season, it’s a day of reflection, to honor those who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. From all of us at Nation Media, thank you to those who have bravely given all.

From eventer Lainey Ashker:

“People frequently ask me what my cross country colors are and I tell them they’re more of a “feeling” than being decked out in red, white and blue. I am proud to be an American, a registered voter, a small part of a democratic society and have the opportunity to ride these beautiful American racehorses and give them a second chance on life as well. I also realize that these luxuries aren’t a given and so my “cross country colors” are also an expression of GRATITUDE for those who have fallen and those who continue to fight for our rights to call this amazing country our HOME!”

Weekend Wrap Up: Faudree, Sellmer & Alliston Win Across Virginia, Woodside

Will Faudree and Mama’s Magic Way. Photo by Leslie Threlkeld for VHT.

Will Faudree has earned 12 International victories in his eventing career, but a long format, formerly CCI, win has eluded him, until this weekend when he topped the Virginia Horse Trials CCI2*-L with Mama’s Magic Way.

Will and the 8-year-old Hanoverian owned by Jennifer Mosing and Sterling Silver Stables had a wire-to-wire lead of the inaugural division, ending the weekend on their dressage score of 22.

“He’s a star. He’s definitely been a horse I’ve had to get to know. I joke around, I say he’s like a 3-year-old little boy in a toy store on a sugar high — all the time. He’s a wonderful horse. We have a lot of fun with him. I’m really excited about his future,” Faudree said of the horse who was produced to the CCI2*-S level by Germany’s Andreas Dibowski.

“I’ve had to figure out how to talk to him when his emotions get going. I was really proud of him in the dressage, and it’s really fun to lead from start to finish. I’m very thankful to Jennifer Mosing and my entire team. It’s exciting — in my 20-plus year career, this is the first CCI long I’ve ever won.”

Show jumping in reverse order, Doug Payne and Stephen Blauner’s Baymax put the pressure on Will with a double clear jumping effort. This is the 6-year-old Irish Sport Horse debut at the level, and he finished on a three-phase result of 25.5.

Fresh off a second place finish in the Jersey Fresh CCI4*-L, Arden Wildasin finished third with Sarah Wildasin’s Southern Sun. The 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse kept their position throughout the weekend, also finishing on their dressage score (26.4).

Sara Sellmer and PDQ Leigh. Photo by Kim Miller.

Sara Sellmer was the big winner on the west coast, taking the Advanced with Jill Walton’s PDQ Leigh.

Sara hadn’t been to The Horse Park at Woodside since her upper level partner, TF Kreisler, died following a cross country accident, so her win of the Advanced this weekend was a bittersweet one.

“I wasn’t sure how I would handle it,” she said. “To be doing Advanced again and to win today is amazing. The support of the community here has also been amazing. All weekend I’ve been getting pats on the back in the warm-up ring and everybody telling me that I can do it.”

Even with one rail down, the pair still finished with four points to spare on a final result of 37.8. Next stop: the CCI4*-L at Rebecca Farm.

Show jumping proved very influential for this division, and a clear round one second over boosted sixth-place Lauren Billys and Castle Larchfeild Purdy to second on a score of 42.3. Frankie Thieriot Stutes and Chatwin were third with 0.8 time penalties added as they head next to Luhmühlen.

James Alliston and Cassio’s Picasso KD. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

James Alliston’s colorful star, Cassio’s Picasso KD, won the Open Intermediate in the final phase. He and the 7-year-old Trakehner stallion jumped clear for the blue ribbon on a score of 28.6. Overnight leader, 15-year-old Jordan Crabo had a disappointing refusal at the first fence with Over Easy, dropping to a second place finish with 29 points. Kelsey Holmes and  NZB The Chosen One were third, finishing on their dressage score of 30.30.

China, Thailand & Poland Punch Tickets to 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Team Poland celebrates their win at Baborówko. M&R Photo.

China, Thailand and Poland have officially secured their qualification to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games across qualifiers this weekend at Baborówko and Samur.

Baborówko stood as an FEI Olympic Qualification Event for Central Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia with Belarus, Poland and Russia coming forward for their ticket to Tokyo. By the end of cross country, only Poland remained with a complete team. Belarus’ Alexander Zelenko was eliminated during dressage and Hannah Nemtsaya withdrew before the cross country. Russia had only three members entered, and lost Aleksandr Markov, who was eliminated on cross country. That left only Poland, who was down to three members as Mariusz Kleniuk retired on cross country, but finished all of them to secure their spot in the 2020 Olympic Games.

Paweł Spisak and Banderas. M&R Photo.

Pawel Spisak and Banderas delivered a key performance for their country today, winning the CCI4O*-L on their best finishing score to date at this level, a 26.8. Marek Jodko’s 12-year-old PZHK (Moravia x Babilonia xx, by Jape xx) led from top to bottom as the only horse in the division to finish on his dressage score.

Michael Jung and fischerChipmunk FRH. M&R Photo.

One of the most exciting new pairs, Michael Jung and fischerChipmunk FRH, nabbed second place in their first long format competition together. Ze Terminator and the 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding (Contendro I X Havanna, by Heraldik I), who is owned by the DOKR, Klaus Fischer, Sabine Fischer and Hilmer Meyer-Kulenkampff, added 6.4 time penalties to an otherwise spotless weekend to finish on a three-phase result of 33.2.

Jan Kaminski and Jard finished third on a score of 39.4. Pawel’s teammates, Joanna Pawlak with Fantastic Frieda and Pawel Warszawski with Aristo A-Z, finished fourth (42.9) and fifth (46.1), respectively.

Held in France, Samur’s CCIO3*-L was an FEI Olympic Qualification Event for Olympic Groups F and G, which covers Africa and the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Oceania. China, Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand each fielded teams.

Alex Hua Tian and Don Geniro. Ouest Image.

Japan won on a cumulative score of 129.3, but as the host nation for next year’s Olympics, they were already guaranteed a team position. This qualifier awarded two countries an Eventing team debut at the next Olympics: China and Thailand.

The CCIO3*-L was won by Jean Lou Bigot riding Aktion de Belheme. This was the 9-year-old Selle Francais’ debut at the level, and he won on a score of 33.8.

Leading the team charge for China was Alex Hua Tian and Don Geniro, who finished second. The 12-year-old Hanoverian had one rail down for a final score of 36.4.

“An amazing, emotional, dramatic and unbelievable day for all of us! When we discussed the Chinese team at Tokyo, I honestly didn’t think that it was possible 18 months ago… too little too late was my feeling. But with luck coming our way, the opportunity opening up and the strength of character from my fellow team riders over the last year leading up to this we have achieved the unthinkable! It is a fairytale and I am extremely proud to make history with these guys,” Alex said.

Saumur: Website, Entries, Results

Countries already qualified for the Olympics include: Great Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Fifteen teams can qualify in addition to the 20 individual slots for a total of 65 starters. Remaining qualifiers include The Pan American Games in Lima, Peru and FEI European Eventing Championships in Luhmühlen, Germany. Additionally, the highest ranked nation of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup™ series in 2019 will also qualify. For more information on Olympic team qualification, follow our handy guide.

Braitling & Pellegrini Crowned Woodside Preliminary Challenge Champions

Meg Pellegrini and Ganymede. Photo by Kim Miller.

Saturday night at The Spring Event at Woodside has a special atmosphere. The big VIP tent with the hustle and bustle of happy patrons enjoying dinner and drinks right alongside the Grand Prix arena gives the space an electric feel, and with Preliminary Challenge competitors show jumping in reverse order of standing, it becomes a very high pressure situation for that level. That’s the beauty of the Preliminary Challenge — it’s a wonderful opportunity for up-and-coming horses and riders to perform in an amped-up environment, and the $15,000 purse doesn’t hurt!

The Preliminary Challenge competitors first battled Bert Woods’ cross country Saturday, but the final standings were decided in the show jumping where second placed Bec Braitling and Meg Pellegrini won the horse and rider divisions, respectively.

Meg Pellegrini and Ganymede. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

Meg Pellegrini and her own Ganymede, a 16-year-old Connemara (Bally Whim An Luan x Court Hawk), secured their third Preliminary win as a pair this weekend. They finished two seconds over optimum time on cross country, their only fault of the weekend, and a double clear show jumping sealed the deal on a score of 34.1.

Meg also snagged third place with

her newest ride, RF Eloquence. She and “Ricky Bobby,” the former five-star ride of Ellie O’Neal, had just 3.2 time penalties for a final score of 36.2.

“Both of my horses always put in 100% effort, but I think (Ganymede) just got a little jealous and she had to come up and show what she could do. She feels and acts like a big horse. She acts like she can jump the moon,” Meg said.

Savannah Gwin and Glock Pullman. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

Savannah Gwin was second with Glock Pullman on a score of 35.7. Both Savannah and Meg are hoping to represent Area VI at the North American Young Riders Championship later this summer.

Bec Braitling and Penhill Celtic. Photo by Sherry Stewart.

Lauren Burnell’s Penhill Celtic is still new to the U.S. with only two competitors under his belt in California so far, but he seems to be getting the hang of it with Bec Braitling in the saddle. The 7-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Je T’aime Flamenco x Norway Maid) earned a 27.9 in the first phase and added nothing to it to finish on his dressage score.

“I love this Woodside event so much because it has so much atmosphere for show jumping, and for having it right after cross country when the horses are a bit tired — It’s a great place to get to know the horses well before going on to an FEI competition,” she said.

Bec had a spate of strong finishes in this class: Kirschblute 3 (5th — 43.1), Caravaggio II (6th — 34.3), and Dassett Ricochet (9th — 35.1).

One unfortunate rail knocked morning leaders Tamie Smith and Elliot-V to second place on on a final score of 31.1. Amber Levine and Excellence were third on a score of 32.7.

Sara Sellmer and PDQ Leigh. Photo by Kim Miller.

Sara Sellmer and PDQ Leigh’s partnership is new and flourishing. They did their very first event together last summer — The Preliminary at Rebecca Farm — and this weekend’s competition at Woodside is their first Advanced.  Jil Walton’s 9-year-old Hanoverian (Quite Easy x Ennie) took over the lead of the division after a faultless cross country trip inside the time to remain on a score of 33.8.

James Alliston and Pandora picked up 3.6 time penalties to go second on a score of 39.1, and Hilary Burkemper sits third with Undercover after 6.8 time penalties for a score of 39.3.

Kerry Groot and Borasco were the only other pair to go double clear, and they’re now fourth (40.5). Dressage leader Frankie Theriot Stutes gave Chatwin an easy, confident run before their five star debut at Luhmühlen  in a few weeks time. They added 14.4 time penalties for fifth place on a score of 41.7.

Their competitors, Russia and Belarus are already out of the running as they don’t have enough riders left to complete a team, but Poland still needs to finish all three of their remaining riders to secure their country’s qualification.

Kimmy Cecere Captures First International Win at Virginia Horse Trials

Kimmy Cecere and Jacqueline Mars’ Landmark’s Monaco stormed around the VHT International CCI3*-S cross country course, posting one of only three double-clear rounds in the division. Their quick work boosted them into the top spot, earning Cecere her first international victory.

The pair earned a 29.9 in dressage, putting them in an initial fourth place. A fault-free show jumping round moved them into third. As they made their way to the startbox for cross country, the experienced gelding was making his enthusiasm for his job known. “He lets me know how he’s feeling,” Cecere said. “Then he just attacked the first jump. It was such a fun round.”

The terrain at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Va., can catch some pairs out unexpectedly, but Monaco was fit and running for fun. At her home base in Middleburg, Virginia, the horses are conditioned on an uphill gallop track. Cecere laughed, “We hit the hill after fence 11 and he was like, ‘yes, this is my jam!’”

It was Monaco’s former rider Lauren Kieffer who partnered Cecere up with the 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse.

“I started working for Lauren about three years ago. I was hired to break the babies and after the first year she wanted me to have more upper level experience,” Cecere said. “She knew we’d be a good match. We get along really well. He’s been so good to me.”

Virginia Horse Trials was the very place they competed in their first show together at Training level in 2017. “I’ve always loved coming here,” Cecere said. With a CCI3*-S win under their belts, they now head to the MARS Equestrian Bromont CCI to compete ing the USEF/USET Foundation North American Futures Team Challenge.

Kieffer and Jacqueline Mars’ D.A. Duras had been leading the charge after the first two phases of the CCI3*-S. However, the 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding was only in need of a fitness run ahead of next month’s Bromont CCI4*-L. “We’ll let him go at his own pace,” Lauren had said. They nevertheless made good time, and a clear round and 4.8 time penalties dropped them only to second place.

Rounding out the top three in the CCI3*-L were Ivie Cullen-Dean and Fernhill Full Throttle. They were seventh after dressage, and with only 3.2 time penalties across the two jumping phases, the pair moved up to finish on a final score of 34.0.

Phillip Dutton and David Vos’ 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood, Get Ready Get Set, led the CCI2*-S from start to finish. Scoring a 25.7 in dressage, they added only a rail in show jumping and 0.8 time penalties on cross country in the gelding’s third international start. Emily Beshear and Templewood finished less than a point behind in second on a 31.4, followed by Michael William and Fernhill Fugitive, who finished on their dressage score of 31.6.

The top seven remain unchanged after cross country in the CCI2*-L, with all pairs completing cross country without jumping or time penalties. Will Faudree and Mama’s Magic Way are first on a 22.0. In tomorrow’s final phase, they have a rail in hand over Doug Payne and Baymax in second.

Virginia Horse Trials: Lauren Kieffer Leads CCI3*-S + Cross Country Preview

Lauren Kieffer and D.A. Duras. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Lauren Kieffer and D.A. Duras hold the top of the standings after the first two phases of the CCI3*-S at the Virginia Horse Trials in Lexington, Va. It’s a packed weekend for the Virginia Horse Center crew with a record 440 entries across starter through CCI3*-S divisions.

Lauren and D.A. Duras, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood owned by Jacqueline Mars and Debbie Adams, were the winners of the first phase in the three-star on a score of 26, and they added nothing to it over Chris Barnard’s show jumping track Friday afternoon. The two are in fine form this spring, coming back from a minor injury in 2018, and they’re looking forward to the Bromont CCI4*-L next month.

“He’s come out at a different level than when he was last competing,” Lauren said. “Because he’s young, we took longer and erred on the side of caution [bringing him back]. I think in the long run it actually did the horse a lot of good. He’s come back really strong, really straight, and a lot more mature.”

“We’ll let him go his own pace tomorrow,” Kieffer said. “The course looks nice. It will be a good fitness run — it’s pretty much all uphill.”

Phillip Dutton and Fernhill Revelation are second. The Revelation Group’s 13-year-old Irish Sport Horse remains on his dressage score of 26.3. “Warren” is competing for the first time since 2017 after sustaining a minor injury. Dutton said he was thoughtful and methodical about bringing this horse back into competition.

“We were very cautious and gave him plenty of time to come back from injury, and he’s returned in fighting form,” he said.

Kimmy Cecere and Landmark’s Monaco are third on a score of 29.9.

VHT is hosting a CCI2*-L for the very first time, and Will Faudree has become the division’s very first leader. Riding Mama’s Magic Way, an 8-year-old Hanoverian owned by Jennifer Mosing and Sterling Silver Stables, Will sits on a score of 22. Originally ridden by Andreas Dibowski, this is an exciting new partnership, so keep an eye out for them on cross country Saturday.

Doug Payne is second with Baymax on a score of 25.5, and Arden Wildasin sits third with Southern Sun on a score of 26.4.

Phillip Dutton also tops the CCI2*-S with David Vos’ Get Ready Get Set in the 9-year-old KWPN’s third International start. After dressage and show jumping, they are on a score of 29.7 with one rail down.

Laura Welsh and Toute Va Bien are second on a score of 31.1 after a double clear show jumping, and Emily Beshear is third with Templewood (31.4).

The Virginia Horse Center has breathtaking views no matter which way you look and makes a picturesque backdrop for cross country. Take a look around the courses designed by Andy John Michael Durr, and David Taylor and built by Tyson Rementer and Tommy Neneman. #Views.
