Familiar Faces and Fabulous First-Timers: Kentucky Thursday Dressage Photo Gallery

In a year when the entire competition feels different, it’s nice to have a few things that feel the same, like Marilyn Little skipping to the top of the leaderboard. But of course, some things were also new, like first-timers who came out swinging (👀Fylicia Barr and Galloway Sunrise) and William Fox-Pitt wearing a helmet instead of a top hat. Here’s your bite sized snack of what we saw where on the first day of dressage at the 2021 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event, featuring photos from Shelby Allen, Shannon Brinkman and Sally Spickard.

Reporter’s Notebook: A Different Kind of Kentucky

Celebrity Sighting! Photo by Shelby Allen.

Pinch me! I can’t believe we are actually on site at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event. Thursday dressage is Rolex Stadium is normally quiet as spectators trickle in, but today was a different kind of eerie white noise. Without the massive VIP and rider tents nearby, the surroundings of the area look bare, too, leaving us with flashbacks of when this event had grass seating.

We’ve been pleased to see the Kentucky Horse Park and this event go above and beyond in managing strict COVID-19 policies. Our numbers are limited in the media center, and we sit between panes of plexiglass to work. Temperature checks are required and they have staff members dedicated to doing random checks to see if folks have the appropriate armbands indicating they’ve been screened before entry. It’s a weird year, but as always, our eventing nation is taking the requirements seriously.

There’s three of us on site this weekend, which is an absolute treat compared to the last time I was here as the lead reporter in 2019 going solo. I had a hell of a team working remotely to keep me afloat, and we do again this year, but these events are always more fun with friends (even if we sit six feet apart).

That said, there’s still one person who isn’t with us this year. Press Officer Marty Bauman gave tribute to Ann Haller before this afternoon’s press conference, and I realized I have never been here in Kentucky without her. Growing up riding with her, I came to Kentucky in 2009 at her suggestion as a bright-eyed spectator and then spent many years interning for her and Marty in the Media Center. While coming to events like this fills my heart with joy, realizing she won’t be here rips the scab off the slow-healing wound of my grief. Last week, we memorialized Ann locally at the farm where I met her, in the cross country field that Roger Haller designed. Their memorial stays nestled in a shady spot with a great view. Be like Ann.

Sara Kozumplik Murphy and Rubens D’Ysieux. Photo by Shelby Allen.

I feel very grateful to be here, and I have to credit Sara Kozumplik Murphy for that. She spearheaded the fundraising effort, with the help of many, many others, to keep this event alive, so it was an extra special treat to watch her have a lovely test with the dreamy Rubens D’Ysieux in the CCI4*-S. Thank you, Sara!

That gratitude permeated my entire day. I didn’t complain (as much) about being cold, and I felt like I soaked in more of each test as a more active viewer. That let me appreciate tiny details that I might have missed before, like seeing the tiny, quick pat that Jonelle Price gave Grappa Nera after a trot lengthening.

As usual, it’s a pleasure to photograph these incredible athletes, and I look forward to doing it again tomorrow. Can someone beat Marilyn’s bomb 21.7? Spoiler alert: statistically, there is/are one(s) who can. To find out who, crack open our Ultimate Guide:

Holly Jacks-Smither Retires More Inspiration

Holly Jacks-Smither and More Inspiration. Photo by Shannon Brinkman.

Holly Jacks-Smither announced last night that she has retired her five-star partner, More Inspiration, from upper level eventing.
This pair were set to compete this weekend at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event when when a heart condition was discovered. At the in-barns, veterinarians picked up on a heart murmur, and after follow up testing, Holly said the decision was made to pull “Morris” from the competition.
In their 13-year partnership, the off-track Thoroughbred (Inspired Prospect x Gentle Buck) took Holly to the top of the sport, debuting at CCI5*-L in 2017. They had another Kentucky start in 2018, followed by a career high, finishing 12th at Les Etoiles de Pau the following year.
Holly posted this tribute today:
“Morris, thank you for being my constant. You have been with me through thick and thin. You took me from a gallop girl to a 5-star event rider.
“We travelled the globe attending Aachen Nations cup, the 5-star at Pau France and of course the Rolex Kentucky.
“You taught me that 5-star horses don’t need to be fancy and well bred. They can have crooked legs, sway backs and huge hearts.
“To say I’m totally heartbroken is an understatement , however I am so thankful that the team at Kentucky found this and he is going to be ok. Thank you to everybody who has been part of this 13 year journey, what a wild ride it has been!”
Please join us in wishing Morris a happy retirement.

Land Rover Rookies: Emily Hamel and Corvett

Welcome to EN’s annual series celebrating the first-timers making their five-star debut at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event! We’re excited to spotlight these exciting pairs as they head toward their first crack at this prestigious event. To read more of EN’s Kentucky coverage, click here.

Emily Hamel and Corvett. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Emily Hamel’s Kentucky dream began in the spring of 1995. Emily traveled with a group of her 4-H buddies to the Kentucky Three-Day Event. She saw David O’Connor and his iconic partner Custom Made win the event, and her fate was sealed – Emily wanted to be an eventer at the highest level.

“I was in 4-H – we didn’t have Pony Club. We went to Kentucky one year, and I had never been. I didn’t know too much about eventing, but I went and I was hooked – I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I’ve been chasing after it ever since then,” she said.

Growing up in Wisconsin, Emily wasn’t exactly in an eventing mecca, but she broke onto the scene and eventually relocated to Lexington, Ky., where she established a teaching and training operation. She began chipping away at her dream with a number of horses, but it was her horse Ramsey who finally took her to the Advanced level. She campaigned him up and down the East Coast when she was offered the job of a lifetime at Phillip Dutton’s True Prospect Farm.

“I had a pretty successful business in Lexington. I started riding with Phillip one year in Aiken, and then he would come to my farm and teach clinics. My situation in Lexington changed, and Phillip offered me a job and I took it. He has a lot of wisdom to give. I’m really thankful for his guidance in my lead up to Kentucky, and for the past 5+ years that I’ve been here,” she said.

Kentucky seemed like a possibility with Ramsey, but an injury in his spring lead up dashed those dreams. Right around that time, Emily met a sporty grey named Corvett.

“I met him in the fall of 2015. He had come to Phillip’s with a young rider, and he was a super good jumper, but he was really quirky. He had done one or two Novices in England before they imported him. Phillip helped her, and then I helped her a little bit, but Phillip said, ‘This isn’t the right horse for her.’ He went to get sold as a jumper, but nobody could ride him there, so he came back to Phillip’s,” she said.

At this point, Emily started riding “Barry” and the two seemed to click.

“Because he was a bit difficult, I was able to get quite a good deal on him. I convinced my parents to buy him. I said, ‘This will be a great investment! I’ll train him up, then I can sell him,’ but then I fell in love with him.”

Of all the starters, Barry, a Holsteiner gelding (Corrido x Tina XI, by Clearway) may have the most iconic jumping style. His preferred method is leaving roughly a foot of breathing room between himself and the fence. While it may give the spectator a fleeting feeling of whiplash, it’s never fazed Emily. Instead of trying to fit Barry into a certain mold, she worked with her horse to make his jumping style successful.

“It’s just the Barry style. It’s unique for sure, but it gives me a great feeling. I feel like you could just jump anything, but it takes some getting used to,” she says. “He’s done that over every height, but he’s actually started to flatten out a little bit. I’m hoping he doesn’t create more height over five-star because they’re big enough as it is! Hopefully he’s happy enough with their size.”

Emily Hamel and Corvett. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Heading toward their CCI5* debut, Emily and Barry, who is owned by the Black Flag Option, will rely on their rock-solid partnership to guide them through the experience. “We always had a connection from the very beginning. There’s no other horse I would want to be doing my first five-star on. He loves the job and as silly as it sounds, I think he wants to make me happy and do the right thing.”

She describes Barry as a “mama’s boy” and everyone at True Prospect would agree – she’s the only one who can catch him from the field. He will eventually concede to outsiders, but only if they’re armed with carrots.

By her side throughout the weekend will be longtime friend Maxine Preston. “We met when I was living in Lexington and became friends because she groomed for me at my old Advanced horse’s first two-star. We got really close through that and we’ve just stayed in touch. We kind of made a pact at that first two-star that she would come to groom for me at Kentucky when I finally got there,” Emily said.

Best of luck to Emily and Barry this week!

Neville Bardos is one of the most iconic horses in U.S. eventing. After a 10th place finish at the World Equestrian Games in 2010, he is possibly most well known for surviving a deadly barn fire at True Prospect Farm, after which he spent significant time recovering from smoke inhalation. It couldn’t hold him back, though, and just three months later he finished seventh at Burghley. While most of his top finishes are with Boyd Martin, he’s spent the last several years showing Boyd’s students the ropes, and his next rider might even be one of Boyd’s kids. Either way, at 22, Neville isn’t ready to slow down yet. [Horse Heroes: Neville Bardos]

Happy National Read Across American Day! Books are such a powerful tool and no one knows that better than Caitlin Gooch, the founder of Saddle Up and Read. Shocked at her home sate of North Carolina’s abysmal literacy rates, Caitlin set out to encourage more kids to read. First she teamed up with a local library where she offered a day a her father’s horse farm as a prize for checking out three or more books.

This project, which earned 501(c)(3) in 2019, also champions representation of minorities in equestrian media. With the help of the community and supporters around the country, SUAR has created a library of books that feature Black equestrians.

Tuesday News:

Badminton Horse Trials has been canceled. After coordinating with local public health officials, the organizers determined that, “due to the scale and location of the horse trials, it is not possible to secure the surrounding area in the proximity of the event site.” [Badminton Horse Trials 2021 cancelled: ‘Everyone is desperately disappointed’]

Cancellations continue as FEI has pulled the plug on International events in 10 countries due to an EHV-1 outbreak. The outbreak, which originated in Spain, has already proved deadly and is the most serious strain seen in decades. The event cancellation has extended through March 28th. Photo Gallery: Intermediate & Advanced Riders Tackle Pine Top

Congratulations to the many, many Intermediate and Advanced riders who competed this weekend at Pine Top. Large entry numbers this year forced the Advanced division to be spread between two days, and the Intermediate was brimming with heavy hitters, too. We close out our weekend in Georgia with a sunny cross country photo gallery:

Sunday Video: Ride Around Pine Top with Tim Bourke & Quality Time

You couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day than what we saw yesterday at Pine Top Farm in Thomson, Georgia. Family owned for eight generations, Glenn and Janet Wilson’s slice of paradise attract snowbirds and locals alike to their top class events each spring and fall. For this weekend’s Advanced competitors, the conditions were idyllic, and riders jumped at the opportunity to ride over a Derek di Grazia course at this point in the season. Ireland’s Tim Bourke was among them.

“It’s a good Derek [di Grazia] course – big and bold and strong,” he said. “I just bridged my reins and let her just pick off the exercises. To be honest I didn’t look at my watch once going around. I just let her canter, but she’s so adjustable and easy to ride that she just makes the time easily without having to go fast.”

Tim finished second in the A division with Carla Abramcheck’s Quality Time, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Guidam x Ruby Roller, by High Roller), and he’s brought us along for the ride through key combinations with his helmet cam, filmed on Cambox isi3 (which he wears in his signature green, of course).

Live from Pine Top: An Advanced Recap

Jenny Caras and Fernhill Trendy. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The first Advanced of the season is always a mélange that includes a mix of entries — from experienced campaigners to first timers. For many, the first blue numbers of the year set the tone for performances to come, and a good result is a boost of confidence any rider would want. The beneficiaries of that good fortune at Pine Top Advanced are Jenny Caras Roberts and Phillip Dutton.

Jenny Caras Roberts lead the 34-entry Advanced A division from start to finish with Elyse Eisenberg’s Trendy Fernhill. The Pine Top blue ribbon was familiar for Jenny and “Joey,” a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Ars Vivendi x Cruising’s Girl, by Cruising). They picked up one just two weeks ago winning the Open Intermediate here. Today the combination had a 26.1 on the flat and added 8.4 time penalties on the cross country for a final result of 34.5.

“He did his first Advanced here last year, and this was just his fourth Advanced. I think it was the best round I’ve had on him. He was really brave and really confident. It felt pretty easy – I was just trying to have a good rhythm and not go too fast, so I was really, really happy with him,” Jenny said.

After moving up to the level in 2020, Jenny had her sights set high, but Joey’s diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and a global pandemic set him on the sidelines for most of the year. Now with his diet sorted, this pair is guns blazing toward a CCI4*-L this spring.

Tim Bourke and Quality Time. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Tim Bourke and Carla Abramcheck’s Quality Time took second place. This was the first run of the year for the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Guidam x Ruby Roller, by High Roller) who is back after recovering from an injury sustained at Tryon last November.

“At Tryon we finished the cross country double clear in the four-star long, and she had a little knick on her knee. It unfortunately had gone into the joint, so she went over to Tryon Equine Hospital and those people were incredible – they had her on the table that night and flushed the joint,” Tim said. “This is her first run back since, so she hasn’t done anything in a little while, but she’s just brilliant. She just rocks around, and you can just come out here after not running in months.”

This pair started the competition in 20th place, and they added only 8 cross country time penalties to finish on a score of 41.6.

Valerie Vizcarrondo Pride and her own Favian, a 13-year-old Oldenburg (French Kiss x Risiko, by Relevant) were third. They were the fastest combination of the day, finishing in 6 minutes and 19 minutes for a final score of 41.7.

Doug Payne and Starr Witness. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The Pan American partnership of Doug Payne and Starr Witness, a 10-year-old Dutch mare (Chello II x Carmen, by Veneur) owned by Laurie McCree, Doug and Catherine Winter, shared a tied lead for first place until the cross country phase where a nice and easy trip in 16 time penalties moved them into fourth place (42.1).

Matt Flynn and Wizzerd. Photo by Shelby Allen.

A final score of 43.2 put Matt Flynn and Wizzerd, 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Wizzerd WV x Oklund) owned by Patrick Flynn, Kathleen Flynn, and Merry Go Round Farm, in fifth place after a clear cross country trip.

Colleen Loach and Vermont finished sixth. Colleen stepped Peter Barry’s 9-year-old Hanoverian up to the level last fall, and this weekend the combination added an educational 17.2 time penalties to their dressage score of 27.9 for a final result of 45.1. Colleen was also 8th with longtime partner Qorry Blue D’Argouges.

Alex Baugh and Mr Candyman sailed around Derek di Grazia’s track for seventh place. Eighteen cross country time penalties had them finish on 47.8 points.

Jon Holling was ninth with Advanced first-timer Prophet, an 8-year-old Trakehner owned by Jon and Chuck McGrath, finishing on a score of 51. Rounding out 10th place is Amanda Beale Clement and Carlson 119 on a score of 51.6.

Phillip Dutton and Carlchen. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Eventing magician Phillip Dutton pulled another trick out of his hat Friday, earning a 15 on the flat to set a new Advanced record. He did this with Caroline Moran’s Carlchen, an experienced campaigner in his own right. The 13-year-old Oldenburg (Clinton x Sunshine, by Lordanos) came stateside in 2019, but this is his first presentation at the level with Phillip.

Their record-breaking dressage gave plenty of breathing room for a breezy 18 time penalties on an otherwise clear cross country to finish on 34.2. Take a look at their mic drop dressage:

“I’ve been in Wellington, so I haven’t actually gone cross country much. I wasn’t sure how he’d be, but he did very well. He’s a real quality horse. He’s so athletic, and this was a great course to be able to just ride at. It’s big enough and it’s just an ideal run,” Phillip said.

Phillip Dutton and Sea of Clouds. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Phillip was also second with Sea of Clouds, a 10-year-old Thoroughbred owned by the Sea of Clouds Partnership on a score of 34.8. “He’s just come leaps and bounds in the last six months,” Phillip said. “I’m really excited about him actually – he’s a proper five-star horse if the other phases get competitive because him being a Thoroughbred he’s able to go fast and quick.”

Phillip’s other Advanced entries, Z and Fernhill Singapore, completed only the dressage and will have a run next week at Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field.

Waylon Roberts and Lancaster. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Waylon Roberts and Michelle and John Koppin’s Lancaster, a 14-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding by Yavari, were third on a score of 36.6.

As usual, Derek di Grazia’s course elicited bold, forward riding. No combinations caught the time, but 88% of the field finished with no jumping penalties.

Pine Top also had a beefy intermediate lineup. Join us in congratulating these winners:

  • Intermediate Horse: Tim Bourke & Lennard (33.2)
  • Intermediate Rider: Isabelle Bosley & Night Quality (40.9)
  • Open Intermediate A: Daniel Clasing & MW Gangster’s Game (31.1)
  • Open Intermediate B: Phillip Dutton & Quasi Cool (21.9)

Tuesday News:

The Olympic dream is looking more possible as COVID is finally moving toward being more contained in Tokyo. For the first time since November, daily cases have dropped below 200. While the International Olympic Committee remains adamant that the Games will go on, this public health crisis continues to threaten that. It was a small, plain bay mustang who lit a fire in 23-year-old Sam Goione’s heart. When she bought the mare from U.S. Bureau of Land Management, a partnership was cemented in stone. [Amateur Showcase: A BLM Mustang Makes All The Difference For Goione]

Tuesday Video: Advanced event pair Nita Sanfilippo and Alarmabull are now a Prix St George combination too:

Bully PSG 2-21

Here's a bit of our Prix St George debut this morning! Bully was tense today, so it was difficult to navigate through the test. We made lemonade, and it was still good experience! We had many 7's on our score sheet… we also had a 3! Life with horses is always humbling.Bully the Advanced Horse is now also Bully the Prix St George Horse, and I am so proud of that. Looking forward to having another go next month!
