The FEI has been in constant contact with the IOC and other bodies regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, a global crisis that has called into question the feasibility of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Today the international governing body issued a message addressing implications of the coronavirus and introducing an FAQ page for affected stakeholders including event organizers, competitors and more.

Dear friends, members and the greater equestrian community,

First and foremost, I hope you are all well and that you and your loved ones are safe.

We are facing an extraordinary situation with the Covid-19 pandemic, and we have all had to adapt both our personal and our working lives in order to play our role in protecting the health and welfare of our nations. This is our collective responsibility and it must be a priority, but it does come at a cost.

Like all industries, the equestrian sporting world has effectively shut down and many of our members are feeling the impact and the related financial strain as a consequence of the restrictions imposed at national level in countries impacted by the virus. All of this is extremely challenging and I want to reiterate our commitment and our determination to help in any way we can to minimise the effects on each and every individual and organisation in our community.

For athletes, your support teams and the nations aiming for Tokyo 2020, this is also extremely challenging as your meticulously planned preparation and training will have to be adapted and modified. I fully appreciate that the uncertainty about the Olympic and Paralympic Games is frustrating, but the FEI is proactively looking at all the measures that will need to be taken in order to guarantee you are given fair and equal opportunities to reach your goals, whilst ensuring that your health and wellbeing always comes first.

We are fortunate that we have completed our Olympic and Paralympic qualifiers, which is sadly not the case for many other sports, but we must continue our preparations and be flexible where we need to be, such as rescheduling cancelled events and potentially extending the timeline around the Minimum Eligibility Requirements (MER), without modifying the requirements themselves.

The disruption to the FEI Calendar as a result of Covid-19 is not just affecting athletes aiming to achieve their MERs, but also has a major impact on the Rankings across all our disciplines. We are monitoring every aspect of the sport and we are taking action wherever needed in order to provide support to our National Federations, our organisers, our athletes, our officials and the entire equestrian industry.

There will be have to be compromise and it probably won’t be perfect, but we are absolutely committed to finding the very best solution for our community and for our sport, and I sincerely believe that we will.

Resilience, determination and dedication are synonymous with the equestrian community, and they are the values we will need to embrace now more than ever before in order to overcome the widespread consequences of this global pandemic.

Let me be very clear – the FEI is always here for you. The FEI Headquarters remains fully operational and even though we are working from our homes we will continue to provide all our stakeholders with a professional and proactive service, including regular updates and comprehensive information around Covid-19 and our sport, such as the newly-published FAQ.

How we tackle every day, and how we find solutions together will counterbalance the cost for our community. This sense of solidarity and this dedication is not only our remit and our mission, it is what defines our sport and the FEI Family.

The first fixture of the 2020 Area I eventing calendar, the UNH Spring Horse Trials, has been canceled. The event was scheduled for April 25-26 in Durham, New Hampshire.

UNH Equine released this statement today:

Dear Competitors, Fans, Volunteers and other Horse Trials Supporters:

It is with great regret that the UNH Competition Management team has made the decision to cancel our UNH Spring Horse Trials, scheduled for April 25-26, 2020, due to concerns regarding COVID-19. UNH has suspended all face to face classes for the duration of the semester and has requested staff and faculty to work remotely and avoid campus whenever possible.

Our University President Jim Dean released a statement yesterday (3/18/2020), in which he said: “As we continue to closely follow the latest developments with COVID-19, our decisions are guided by our first priority: the safety and well-being of our faculty, staff and students. We made this decision to significantly reduce the population density of our campuses and the towns and cities our campuses are located in, as a preventive measure to enable more social distancing at a time when many new infections and even deaths are being reported daily. While we regret the inconvenience and lack of on-campus life for our students this will cause, the health and safety of our community must come first.”

The majority of campus staff and faculty are working remotely per our administration’s request, and we will therefore shred all entries and payments received for the horse trials to date. We are working with the USEA to refund monies paid via Xentry. In the latest wave of updates from organizers regarding canceled events, we now see that Longleaf Pine Horse Trials, scheduled to run April 18-19, will not run. The event was to be held at Carolina Horse Park, which was also to play host to this weekend’s Carolina International.

For riders competing at Carolina, organizers of the International have released an update regarding refunds:

“Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate the cancelation of the 2020 Carolina International. Your support during this unprecedented time is greatly appreciated. The Carolina Horse Park was entirely ready for competition with the completion of all temporary stabling, hospitality and vendor tents as well the cross-country course being set and decorated for officials to inspect when we were compelled to cancel the competition. It was a difficult decision to make, but we felt it was in the best interest of all constituents.

The Carolina International Organizing Committee will refund all competition entry fees and all fees associated with the event including RV rental spaces, grounds fees, pre-ordered shavings, and USEA, USEF and FEI fees. Due to the significant investment in the safest accommodations through Fredricks Equestrian International Stabling, we are not able to refund all of the stabling fees, however, we will refund 50% of those fees. Please contact the event secretary, Sharyn Antico, at [email protected] to let her know the name and address of who paid for the entry and to whom the refund should be sent. All refunds will be sent within two weeks of her receipt of this information.

Should you wish to receive a tax deduction please know that the Carolina Horse Park Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and you can convert your entry and stabling fees to receive a 100% tax deduction and we will provide you with a letter for tax purposes. Those who have purchased tickets for the canceled 2020 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event will have received an email from Equestrian Events, Inc. today outlining their refund options.

From EEI:

Thank you for supporting the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event and the Kentucky CSI3* Invitational Grand Prix, which have, unfortunately, been cancelled due to COVID-19.  As a non-profit, Equestrian Events, Inc. (EEI), organizer of these events, has relied on fan support since 1978, and that support will be even more vital in the years to come due to this unprecedented cancellation.

In light of the cancellation, ticket purchasers for the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event and the Kentucky CSI3* Invitational Grand Prix have the following two refund options.

Option 1:  Full Refund 

Option 2:  Rollover your 2020 ticket purchase to the 2021 Event (dates:  April 22-25). Those who elect to rollover their 2020 purchase will be able to retain their same seat selection for 2021.  

For those that elect a full refund: Refunds will be issued beginning in April and will continue through July, on the 15th of each month. We will begin with those who purchased tickets first. This schedule is necessary for EEI to mitigate the financial hardship this has created for our organization. However, we recognize that COVID-19 has also created a hardship on you. [Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event]

Equestrian Sports NZL has taken an aggressive measure in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, announcing today that it cancel all ESNZ events in jumping, dressage and para-equestrian, eventing and endurance for a three-month period effective immediately. This will be reviewed at the end of April or as required.

The organization issued the following press release today:

The decision has not been made lightly and is in response to the Government directive on mass gatherings. The cancellation does have a financial effect on the sport and is disappointing but it is the responsible course of action. Many other sports have reduced or cancelled sporting gatherings including club games and training.

ESNZ Chair Lynda Clark said the board’s first priority was the safety of people and it had a duty of care to look after its members, officials, volunteers and riders at this time.  “Social distancing needs to be practiced and we cannot do this effectively if we are condoning the continuation of events,” she said. This applies to any event using ESNZ rules including those with a group member affiliation.

“We care about our people and we need to make sure we are not compromising members, officials and volunteers. We are aware that an early end to the season will be disappointing for some but we need to make a decision to provide clarity to organising committees and to ensure people can make plans.” Awards dinners and social engagements should be postponed. A decision on the ESNZ AGMs will be made in the next two weeks.

Officials and volunteers should not feel compelled to officiate at any events in the next three months if they are asked, personal safety is of the utmost importance.  ESNZ organising committees, including area groups, and those using ESNZ rules, should not be running any events, winter series or practice days, in the next three months. The best plan is to ride your horse but in an environment where other people have not congregated or where social interaction is possible. Personal responsibility is key.

These are unprecedented times and the situation continues to develop in New Zealand and around the world. ESNZ will endeavour to keep everyone informed as much as possible.  The Government has indicated there may be a tightening of the rules around mass gatherings in the next week. We will review this situation as it comes to hand.

A Covid-19 page has been developed on the ESNZ website with cancellation notices, updates and any information that comes to hand. Please use this to keep up to date.

For ESNZ staff, there are travel restrictions in place and all staff are being asked to be vigilant. No hotel accommodation is permitted and the central office will be monitored daily. A business continuity plan is in place should the office need to be closed.

[STATEMENT FROM THE ESNZ BOARD – EQUESTRIAN SPORTS NZ EVENTS CANCELLED FOR NEXT THREE MONTHS]

We are saddened to share the latest victim of COVID-19’s impact on U.S. eventing: Pine Hill Spring Horse Trials, scheduled to take place on April 4 in Bellville, Texas. Today the event released the following statement:

“In the 25 years of my involvement with the Pine Hill Horse Trials we have never had to completely cancel or postpone a USEA sanctioned event. This is even with 9/11, Hurricane Ike, Phil’s Passing in 2011, droughts and wildfires, Hurricane Harvey, tornadic thunderstorms, and flooding. So cancelling our April 4 USEA Spring Horse Trial due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus is a new and somber milestone for us.

“We have new jumps, new courses, and new footing in our jumper arena and we were so excited to share these improvements and changes with our Area V competitors. Up until today we thought we might be able to hold the show but the rapid spread and efforts to contain and ‘flatten the curve’ of the virus have finally reached a level that directs us to put the safety and well-being of our competitors, officials, and volunteers (as well as their families) first and foremost by limiting exposure.

“All competitors that have entered the show need to be reassured that we will not be keeping any of your entry fees. We understand we are all in for some hard times with a wounded economy and we want to make sure we support you so that you continue to support us when we get back to normalcy whenever that may be. For those who sent personal checks – I have not deposited any of them and will destroy them. For those who paid by credit card on X-entry – I will need 2-3 weeks to process that money through the Pine Hill account and send out refunds. For those who used an Entry Certificate won at one of the Area Eventing Association banquets – we will extend the one year limit to include April 2021.

“We will explore options for a makeup date and if it is feasible we will get the word out.

“Thank you so much for your understanding and continued support of Pine Hill. Be Safe and Stay Healthy!”

Winona Horse Trials, originally scheduled for May 8-10 at Stone Gate Farm in Hanoverton, OH, is sadly among the list now numbering over 20 USEA events that have been canceled or postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. We are glad, however, to hear that they are seeking a postponement date.

Owners Jackie and Dave Smith issued the following statement:

“It’s hard to believe that the Winona Horse Trials is being added to the ever-growing list of competitions adversely affected by the Coronavirus.  Due to the latest updates and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the State of Ohio, it is with great sadness and frustration that the Winona Horse Trials scheduled for May 8-10 at Stone Gate Farm will not run in May.  However, we do plan on running at a later date.

“We currently have the approval of the USEA Area VIII Chairman to change the date and a formal request has been sent to United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and United States Eventing Association (USEA).  We hope to make a formal announcement soon, but with the upcoming opening date just around the corner we wanted to give our riders a heads up. 

“We’re looking forward to celebrating the 35^th Anniversary of the Winona Horse Trials with all our loyal competitors, volunteers, officials, friends and family even if it has a little later than originally planned.

“In the meantime, stay safe, stay strong and stay sane … ride on!!

The day after British Eventing issued the cancellation of all forthcoming competition, effective immediately, The Eventing Spring Carnival at Thoresby Park has confirmed that it will not run.

Thoresby Park, a new fixture that was to host the first CCI4*-S of the British eventing season, was scheduled for March 27-29 in north Nottinghamshire. The CCI4*-S division had 130 entries, with over 700 more entries spread across other FEI and horse trial divisions. We will be excited for its new debut date next year, April 1-4, 2021.

The event is run by BEDE Events, which also runs Osberton H.T. (Oct. 2-6) and Firle Place H.T. (May 9-10).

In light of the UK Government’s most recent announcement, and following discussions with the sport’s governing body, British Eventing, BEDE Events has made the sad but inevitable decision to cancel The Eventing Spring Carnival in 2020.

The welfare of competitors, supporters and visitors is paramount and the government’s advice has been to minimise social contact and non-essential travel. With restrictions on the support of the emergency services, the responsible decision is to take all action necessary not to further
burden the NHS or risk members’ safety at events.

Update: Full Gallop Farm will not be hosting the schooling show, but will be hoping to postpone the event. 

Among the events falling within the USEA two-week suspension window is the Full Gallop Farm March II H.T. the final weekend of the month in Aiken, SC. New Event Horse, Young Event Horse and Dressage Test of Choice classes were take place on Saturday, March 28; the Starter through Preliminary horse trial divisions were to take place on Sunday, March 29.

In response to the announcement from the USEA suspending all recognized events for two weeks and the USEF and FEI urging the cancelation of events for 30 days due to the COVID-19 pandemic, here is Full Gallop Farm’s response and plan:

While the refund policy in the USEA omnibus clearly states that there are no refunds for competition cancellation, we felt it was in our community’s best interest to come up with a balanced plan that offered some form of return on your competition investment. We wish we could offer refunds, however, that is just not possible. There are many pre-show expenses that occur whether the competition is held or not.

Full Gallop Farm — Rescheduling of March Horse Trials

We are requesting a move of the current scheduled March 29th Horse Trials to a date TBD. Anyone who has prepaid to attend the March 29th Horse Trials will be issued a voucher to be used towards any upcoming events, shows, or cross-country schooling fees until March 31st, 2021.

The New Event Horse and Young Event Horse competition is cancelled and refunds will be issued for those entries that have paid.

Three Phase Schooling Show to Replace Horse Trials

We are scheduling a Three-Phase Schooling show on March 29, 2020. Registrations will be available at EventEntries.com as of March 17th after 10 a.m. All registrations must be prepaid.  If you cannot use EventEntries you can drop off an entry or email the entry and PayPal the entry fees using the “friends and Family” option to [email protected]. Those who have prepaid for the March 29, 2020 event may apply those fees for the schooling show and the difference in amounts will be issued in a voucher to be used towards any upcoming events, shows or cross country schooling fees until March 31st, 2021.

If you do not want a voucher, or to run the schooling event with a voucher for the difference, the other option you have is just to scratch your entry. If you decide to take this option be advised the only refund you will receive is your USEA starter fee of $25. The rest of the entry and stabling will not be refunded.

March 27-29: Galway Downs International H.T. – Canceled/Postponed

With the most recent directives from FEI, USEF and USEA we have no choice but to cancel our March 27th-29th International Event and Horse Trials.

Given the unique circumstances we are requesting to add in an International CCI-S 2*, 3*, and 4* event to our existing OI-Intro recognized Spring Horse Trials on May 1st-3rd as well as add an Advanced horse trials.

For those entered into next weekends cancelled event (March 27th-29th) you will have the following options available to you:

Option one: Your existing entry and stabling to be used to compete in our unrecognized March 27th-28th Prelim-Intro horse trials. This would also move any existing consumables (hay, shavings, RV). During this show we will be proceeding with our previous plan to make it a biosecure event.

Option two: Entry credit less stabling to be applied to May 1-3 International Event and Horse Trials. This would also moving any existing consumables (hay, shavings, RV).

Option three: Receive any association fees back and consumables (hay, shavings, tickets, RV). Stabling and entry fee will be lost.

Official Rocking Horse statement regarding coronavirus (COVID-19): In light of the current concern with the coronavirus outbreak, Rocking Horse Spring Horse Trials will now run as a schooling show on Saturday, March 28 & Sunday, March 29, 2020 in accordance with strict guidelines from The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If a competitor decides at any time to scratch their Spring entry before the start of the show, they will be issued a full refund on their entry or it can be forwarded to a future schooling show or recognized show. Please take a moment and notify us how you’d like to proceed with your entry: email us at [email protected].

March 28-29: Morven Park Spring H.T. – Canceled

Out of an abundance of caution and compliance with the USEF and USEA requests to suspend equestrian competition, the 2020 Morven Park Spring Horse Trials will be canceled. The annual eventing competition has been held since 1974 and sees hundreds of equestrians competing in dressage, show jumping, and cross-country at one of the first recognized competitions of the season. Spring Horse Trials was scheduled to be held March 28 and 29 at the Morven Park International Equestrian Center.

“In our 46 years of hosting Horse Trials we’ve never had to cancel before,” said Sheryl Williams, Morven Park’s Executive Director. “We’ve seen rainstorms, out of season temperatures, and even a little snow, but there’s no way to weather this. We share in the disappointment felt by the riders that were scheduled to compete, and the owners, trainers, volunteers, and sponsors who have been so supportive of the Morven Park Horse Trials over the years.”

Due to the extenuating circumstances of this cancellation, Morven Park has chosen not to follow the protocol stated in our Omnibus listing and will issue everyone a full refund for their entry and stabling. There will be no administrative fee taken from your refund. Please email [email protected] with the correct name and mailing address that you would like your refund sent to, and we will start to process those on Monday, March 16th.

At this time, we are also canceling our Open Cross-Country Schooling Day on March 30th. We are extremely saddened to be unable to host this event, but hope that everyone will come out to support all of our upcoming equestrian events that are still scheduled to take place starting on April 18th.

In the coming months, Morven Park International Equestrian Center is looking forward to welcoming riders and spectators at the upcoming Summer Show Series for hunter/jumpers, the fourth season of Polo in the Park, and in October for the Morven Park Fall International Horse Trials and CCI.

April 4-5: Spring Bay H.T. – Canceled

It is with the deepest regret I have to announce that we will be canceling Spring Bay this year. Between the USEF announcement and the fact that the Lexington County Parks Department is closing Masterson Station to all organized groups, we have no choice.

We were so excited to offer a good competition, not to mention the first Modified level in Area 8. I know many of us are reeling from the news of so many competitions being lost this spring and the impact of all of this will be unfolding over the next little while.

Everyone will be notified by email with further details and we appreciate your patience as we sort it all out. Rest assured, we will be back and we look forward to seeing you in 2021!

April 10-12: Fair Hill International April H.T. and CCI-S

Official Statement Regarding COVID-19:
It is with regret that we announce the cancellation of the National Divisions of our April Recognized Horse Trials, scheduled to be held April 10 – 12, 2020 at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Management Area in Fair Hill. In compliance with the current Maryland State Of Emergency regulations, as well as US Equestrian directives, we feel it is in the best interest of competitors, officials & volunteers to cancel our National divisions at this time.

Fair Hill International is also scheduled to hold FEI divisions (CCI-S 4/3/2*) that same weekend. We will have an announcement on Monday regarding the status of the FEI divisions, as we work to figure out all the details with FEI, USEF, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. We are sorry to report that Stable View in Aiken, SC, has canceled the national divisions of its March 27-28 event; the fate of the FEI divisions are still up in the air but currently accepting entries.

“OFFICIAL STATEMENT REGARDING COVID-19: Stable View has always made horse and human welfare its number one priority, and we have kept a constant watch on developments related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). As previously stated, we had the full intention of running all events unless otherwise advised by governing organizations. Unfortunately, through statements made today by USEF and the FEI, as well as growing pressure from state and federal agencies, we now feel compelled to cancel all National Divisions for the next month. Full repayment will be made to all riders for all fees associated with these entries. This weekend’s Southern Comfort Dressage show remains unaffected.

“For the FEI event scheduled to run March 27-28, we are continuing to take advice. We have been told that upper level riders need to be able to run their horses, in case the Olympics still occur, and that we would be providing a needed service to these riders if the event proceeds. Having taken further advice, we have been told that the event would still count as an FEI qualifier, but not a USEF qualifier, and that we are still allowed to give prize money.

“If we do proceed, we would take as many precautions as possible, including canceling our vendor row and competitors party, and ordering extra hand sanitizing stations. Another option is to run a schooling event on the same course at a reduced entry price. Regardless of which direction we go, we would offer a full refund to riders who would prefer not to come. We are seeking further clarification and will make a further announcement ASAP. At present, our FEI event remains open for entries.”

• Carolina International H.T. (March 19-22 in Raeford, NC): canceled
• Southern Arizona March H.T. (March 20-22 in Tucson, Arizona): canceled
• Designer Builders Stable View Spring CCI-S (March 27-28 in Aiken, SC): national divisions canceled; FEI divisions still open for entries
• Galway Downs International (March 27-29 in Temecula, CA): schedule change/closed to spectators
• CDCTA Spring Horse Trials (April 5 in Berryville, VA): canceled

Southern Arizona March H.T. 

“Regretfully, SAzEA March Horse Trials (March 20-22, 2020) is canceled pursuant to directives from the USEF issued today regarding the COVID-19. We are working on as generous a refund policy as possible. We hope to have those details ready within the next few days and appreciate your patience during the process.

“In the meantime, the SAzEA Cross-Country course stands ready for use. We are offering cross-country schooling for the next two weekends – March 14-15 and 21-22. The membership requirement is waived for these special schooling weekends although all the rest of our schooling policies will apply. If you would like to school or need stabling PLEASE REGISTER ONLINE in the SHOP at southernarizonaeventing.org

“We are very sorry to have to make this decision, but the health of our riders and community are our primary concern. We look forward to seeing you in SAzEA Horse Trials on November 20-22, 2020 at the Area X Championship.”

CDCTA Spring Horse Trials

“Due to the recommendations of the United States Equestrian Federation, CDCTA has decided to cancel the CDCTA Spring Horse Trials scheduled for Sunday, April 5, 2020 in Berryville, Virginia. With the extraordinary effects of the coronavirus throughout the country, we feel this is the best decision for all our competitors, officials, and volunteers.

“We will be refunding ALL entry fees and office fees for received entries. Please allow us 2-3 weeks to get all these checks mailed out. Please feel free to contact the secretary, Lisa Mendell, at [email protected] with any questions.

“We look forward to seeing all of you for our Fall Horse Trials scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2020. In the meantime, please enjoy your horses and stay safe and healthy.”

In accordance with the FEI, the USEF has issued a recommendation that all competitions be suspended for the next 30 days (through mid-April).
