One day, I keep telling myself, I’ll make it out to Rebecca Farms for their summer horse trials. Maybe I won’t have the gumption to drag my horse halfway across the country (especially as my current horse has a tendency to scalp himself on long journeys) but perhaps next year I’ll go for the reporting. And the sunsets. And the overall vibe. Rebecca Farms 2022!

Michael Jung made Eventing history by becoming the first to hold the European, Olympic, and World Championship titles at the same time. Now, he has his sights set on an individual hat-trick in Tokyo, partnered with Fischer Chipmunk, and we all know he won’t leave anything on the table. Only two other riders have won two Olympic titles in Eventing, Charles Pahud de Mortanges won both Amsterdam 1928 and Los Angeles 1932 riding Marcroix, and Mark Todd won Los Angeles 1984 as well as Seoul in 1988 with the legendary Charisma. Can Michael Jung beat ANOTHER world record and win three Olympic gold medals?? [Tokyo 2020 Eventing Preview]

Lack of riding time is a common complaint among adult amateur equestrians. Between professional careers, family commitments, and an often-overwhelming number of other responsibilities, riding for a short time, even a few days a week can be tough to fit in. But, even if you only have a short time to devote to working with your horse, there’s a lot that can be accomplished in less than an hour with some longeing and riding exercises.  Does Phillip Dutton feel extra pressure with the added mantle of being the oldest American at the Olympics? Nah. Pretty much standard stuff for him. In his seventh Olympic appearance, Phillip won an individual bronze at Rio in 2016, making him the oldest American medallist since 1952. He credits his longevity to his dedication to core strength and balance. [Team USA’s Oldest Olympian]

We’ve had Olympic horses in Tokyo before, for the 1964 Olympics. Things were a little different then, with Australian horses coming in by ship, but some of the equestrian events were held in Baji Koen Park—the same location in which the equestrian sports will be contested this year— and Japan also provided a sprawling eventing course at Karuizawa, a forested area 90 miles from Tokyo. News From Around the Globe:

In the FEI’s centenary year it is perhaps fitting that this year’s Olympic Games will be staged by one of its founding members, Japan. The Tokyo 2020 host has a long history in equestrian sports, although achievements on the biggest stage have been rare. The world’s tallest horse, who held a Guinness World Record, has died aged 20. “Big Jake” died last month at Smokey Hollow Farm in Wisconsin, United States. The Belgian gelding stood 2.75 inches over 20 hands, without shoes. Jake broke the record for the tallest living horse on 19 January 2010 and first appeared in the 2011 edition of the Guinness World Records book. When your 4-year-old really loves the water complex. Photo courtesy of Mikayla Mather Carlton

With a whole week of continuous brutal hot Virginia weather, I finally cracked and decided to ride my last horse in a bareback pad, shorts, and flip flops. We went for a happy little jaunt through the woods and down into the river for some splashing, which is honestly the only respectable choice in July in Virginia. However, luckily my horse did not make the choice that Mikayla’s did when she tried to school the water complex!

What the heck is going on with the horse market right now? That’s a question on a lot of minds, and as I’ve spent this spring searching for a few client horses, I can tell you it’s pretty wild. Obviously the biggest news of the week for the eventing world is the last-minute switcharoo of the team bound for Tokyo, with the withdrawal of Deniro Z. All of us at EN want to send our hugs to Liz Halliday-Sharp, as we can’t imagine the heartbreak she’s feeling, and the disappointment of getting so so close to a lifetime goal. However, a rider like Liz with a string of horses like she’s got will definitely be back on Team USA very soon, and we look forward to that day very much.

Any good horseman will tell you, management and simple decisions under saddle are your best weapons against injury. From employing cross-training over varied terrain, to properly managing your warm up and cool down, equine and human physiotherapist Sasha Chelin knows how to keep horses sound. Gary Snyder has been involved with horses for about 50 years, and has spent many of those volunteering at USEA events. Over the years, Snyder has done several different volunteer positions, but startbox is definitely his favorite. “I’ve been startbox, I’ve scribed, I like sit-down jobs because my feet are old, and I’ve been steward,” commented Snyder. “My goal in startbox is to give everyone a blue ribbon. What they do with that after they leave my start box is up to them. The nice thing about the start box is that your life is easy if you get a good steward. Also, being in startbox allows you to meet everybody.” [VIP Volunteer Gary Snyder]

Breathing exercises can really help in stabilizing your core and strengthening your position. But we hardly think about breath when we’re riding. Meanwhile, the horse is continuously moving forward, and it is important for the rider to keep moving the chest and shoulders forward together with the horse’s movement. The horse moves the rider’s pelvis forward, and the rider needs to balance the upper body into this forward motion. Get some breathing tips here to improve your riding at the core. I haven’t been out at a competition yet this year, for a variety of silly reasons, so it was really nice to go to Great Meadow yesterday and watch some of our favorite pairs gallop around Ian Stark’s cross country course. I also had way too much fun taking photos, and I love going through all of them afterwards and examining everyone’s ridiculous jumping faces when they get splashed in the water jump. Cross Country Day for Team USA Mandatory Outing at Great Meadow

Will Coleman and Off The Record rocketed around with the fastest time of the day. Photo by Kate Samuels.

With the schedule here at Great Meadow reorganized to avoid the thunderstorms this afternoon, we enjoyed a brief morning of cross country action with just twelve horse and rider pairs. As the last outing before the team riders ship off to Germany next week, today was an important test of how all the horses are feeling going into the Olympics, and how the alternates are looking for future team selection.

As this event is mostly a prep run to establish confidence, and tick off any last minute changes before Big Bad Tokyo, so most riders ran with their horses well in hand, and nobody made the time of 5:30. The crew here at Great Meadow did an excellent job of preparing the footing on cross country, with a personalized sprinkler system on all of the galloping lanes, and even though the first horse was on course at 10 AM, the weather was a suitable test for the heat of Tokyo.

Will Coleman and Off The Record came the closest to making the time, with Timmy looking like a lion on course and coming in with a scant few 6.8 time penalties. This horse’s big galloping stride and bold jumping style helped him shave seconds off without looking like he was even trying, and seems to have come out of his first Kentucky with more self confidence than before. The 12-year-old Irish gelding had a great spring with a win in the CCI4*-S at Carolina International, and a 15th place ribbon in his debut at the Land Rover Kentucky Three Day Event following a clear cross country round. Will hopes to aim Timmy for another CCI5* with the addition of the Maryland Five Star to our North American calendar in the fall.

Tamie Smith & Mai Baum. Photo by Kate Samuels.

The young guns with the first name Will were on fire today with their up-and-coming stars, with Will Faudree and Mama’s Magic Way smoking their way around for 9.2 time penalties, and the only other pair to garner single digit points. At only 10 years of age, Mason is a something of a prodigy, with his Land Rover Kentucky debut already in the bag, and a performance impressive enough to land him on the Olympic alternates list. Fun fact: today was only Mason’s 8th run at the Advanced level! Will can’t say enough about the horse, “On cross country he’s just a machine, he gives me the same feeling as Antigua”. This pair is flying over to Germany to get the travel and training experience, but ultimately this young horse has a big future ahead of him outside of performances in 2021.

Another pair heading to Germany is Tamie Smith & Mai Baum, who made the trip all the way back from California to participate in this outing, and then hop on a plane for Aachen. Tamie says that she has been working with Erik for a different style of riding on cross country, and that she was actually a little nervous to test it out here at Great Meadow. “It all worked out though, and actually it was much easier!” she said. Lexus looked in fine form, and always stuns with his athletic prowess over jumps.

Doug Payne & Vandiver skipping through the water at 13. Photo by Kate Samuels.

The only surprise where Doug is concerned is that he went slowly enough to earn himself 10.4 time penalties, and didn’t feature any trademark DP Shortcuts, but the very experienced Vandiver looked fresh as a daisy and bopped along easily in preparation for Big Bad Tokyo. Doug made his Team USA debut at the Pan American Games in 2019 with Starr Witness, finishing in 4th place individually and helping the team snag Team Gold in the process. Doug’s consistency and reliability with 17-year-old Quinn landed him a spot as the traveling reserve to Tokyo, where the new Olympic format will potentially have him as a competing member.

The Big Three all looked in fine form today, with the first run since Kentucky for all of them. Liz Halliday-Sharp and Deniro Z looked extremely confident on course, but Liz says he has only jumped a few skinnies in her indoor since Kentucky, and this was his first real cross country school since April. Niro sprung a shoe and had some farrier issues during the past two weeks, so while he was back in work and got his important gallops in beforehand, he missed the opportunity to school cross country. However, their long term partnership and his zest for running fast and jumping high served him well, and he was spot on for every combination.

Deniro Z made light work of the cross country today. Photo by Kate Samuels.

“My plan is to work on the test for Tokyo, and especially the changes for Niro,” says Liz. “The two rails down at Kentucky were a little uncharacteristic for him, so it’s good that Peter [Wylde] is going to Germany with us to work on show jumping, and I’ve just got a few minor things to tweak on cross country.”

Ultimately, however, the plan has always been to ship out the team next week “ready to run” as Erik Duvander put it, and while they’ll use their training time in Aachen wisely, the feeling is that all four horses heading to Tokyo are prepared in terms of fitness and technical skill.

When asked about the new Olympic format, Erik replied that he’s not a fan. “I don’t like the new format, and I think it makes you have a defensive and reserved strategy for cross country, because we absolutely cannot afford any members of the team to have a run-out, or tip up at all”. He went on to elaborate that this new format even affected team selection, with consistency and reliability in producing clear rounds on cross country becoming even more important than before. With only three riders on the team, there is no more room for error or taking risk on cross country, which Erik believes takes out some of the excitement of the sport.

Phillip Dutton & Z. Photo by Kate Samuels.

Phillip Dutton is certainly no stranger to the hubbub surrounding The Olympic Games, considering Tokyo will be his 7th time representing his country in this capacity. Phillip will also be the oldest Olympian representing the United States this year, but his age certainly hasn’t stopped him from keeping up with the exuberant 12-year-old Zangersheide gelding. A man of few words, Phillip is straightforward in his praise for Zedd, “He’s as good as they get. He’s starting to really understand each phase. He’s a real competitor, and hopefully that’s going to happen at Tokyo”.

Z is a horse that has just gotten better and better with time, and finished in a solid 8th place this spring at Land Rover Kentucky CCI5*, adding just 5.2 cross country time penalties to his dressage score, and securing his ticket to Tokyo with his consistency, and, let’s be fair, probably some experience from his jockey.

Boyd and the small but mighty Tstesterleg fly down this big drop. Photo by Kate Samuels.

And last but not least, Boyd Martin went out of the start box first today with On Cue, and last with Tsetserleg TSF. A testament to Boyd’s training and Thomas’ confidence, the two looked no worse for the wear after their unfortunate fall late in the course at Kentucky, and Thomas positively pinged around the course here. “The old campaigner Thomas, he’s feeling really fit and strong,” says Boyd. “I think I’m in good shape going into the games”. Simple, succinct, but experienced and tough as nails, Boyd is probably accurate in this feeling, and his horses look in prime condition.

While the day was relatively easy going, we had one unfortunate spill from Colleen Loach at 20B, the log drop down into the second water, where Qorry Blue d’Argouges took a dislike to the proposed jump, and put on the brakes, sending her gracefully into the water on her own. Both horse and rider walked away just fine though, so a safe day of high performance eventing overall. We’ll be back tomorrow for an update from the show jumping course!

I can hardly believe the Olympics is only a month away. With the delay from last year, it feels like we’ve literally been waiting for a million years for the Olympics, and honestly, many of us started this year wondering if it would even happen at all. But a month will pass in a flash! With the final outing next week, I can’t imagine the pressure the riders and athletes are feeling, after such a weird year and a half. Crazy!

Can’t get enough of the success of Mollie Summerland? Mollie’s ultimate dream was set aged just 11. Mollie’s mum has the proof – a hand-drawn poster announcing her aim of riding at the Olympics. Unlike many other childhood dreams that faded over time, Mollie’s is still firmly in place a decade on and her ambition shows no sign of waning. [Dream of a Lifetime]

Norman came all the way from Hungary to fulfill a young rider’s dream, but two colic surgeries and a deep digital tendon tear in two years seemed to threaten their life together. At the Aspen Farms Horse Trials recently, Madison Langerak rode her Normandy Kivalo to victory in the preliminary rider division, adding only cross-country time penalties to their dressage score of 23.3. While anyone would be proud of that result, the win was especially poignant considering that not only was it the pair’s first successful preliminary completion in two years, it also came after overcoming a series of challenges that threatened to end not just the horse’s career, but his life. [Norman Overcomes it All]

Taking lessons from McLain Ward can never be a bad thing, as he’s one of the most beautiful and successful riders in the world. His strong position and coordinated efforts of all his aids is what makes him so brilliant. Are your aids clear and independent of each other? Are you telling your horse conflicting or contradictory things at the same time? Maybe you are aware that you clash your aids but have difficulty avoiding it? Can you isolate and use different parts of your body?  [Independent and Effective Aids Start With a Strong Position]

Is there anything more satisfying than seeing a horse in your care explode into dapples? My personal horse is currently having a really good dapple season, and I’ve got to take photos of him just because I feel somehow personally responsible for how pretty he looks. Maybe it’s just me being slightly neurotic, but I’m always obsessed with getting my horses super glossy and silky soft, and if I can get dapples I’m positively delighted. Also why I keep buying plain bays, because otherwise this isn’t possible.

Can we talk about the horse market for a hot minute? I don’t know what is happening, or if anybody could have predicted that the result of a year of pandemic was that the sales of horses would absolutely become fire. This is wonderful news for sellers, of course, but as a regular person trying to find some horses for students, it’s crazy that by the time I text the owner, there is already a waitlist and we can hardly even get out to see a horse! Hopefully it calms down soon, and I can actually, you know, sit on a horse and maybe buy it.

The Chronicle of the Horse caught up with him May 24, as he was en route to the airport, bound for Rome and the CSIO5* Nations Cup where he will continue his journey to earn a spot on the Tokyo Olympic team. Before he jetted off, he reflected on living life despite uncertain times, a pandemic Olympics, and his star mare Sapphire. [McClain Ward Reminisces & Ponders the Future]

Sometimes in the horse world, you have to take pleasure in the small things of every day life, because the never-ending daily work of it can get tiring. Right now, and I know this sounds silly, but in Virginia it’s been cool and we’ve had what I call a blackberry spring, and at the moment, all the blackberry bushes and the honeysuckle are blooming at the same time. I’m lucky enough to have access to a few thousand acres of wilderness hacking, and there is nothing more satisfying than taking a ride down by a river in the shade and smelling the honeysuckle and the blackberries. Like I said, it’s the little things.

News From Around the Globe:

Seven horses are in the running for the Holekamp/Turner Grant for Le Lion Championships this fall. Camarillo is the only horse in the U.S. with full qualifications already under his belt, but six more horses are on his heels looking to get that travel grant. American-bred horses receive $17,500 to travel to Le Lion, while horses bred outside of the US receive $8,000, thus incentivizing U.S. breeding programs for promising young horses. Read about each horse here.

Holly Hudspeth has been around some of the biggest eventing tracks in the world, but now she knows the real meaning of nerves as she watches her 9-year-old daughter Hailey tackle eventing at the lower levels. Paired with the unicorn Cookies N’ Cream, the duo recently picked up their first win at the maiden level at the Carolina Horse Park for the War Horse Series. For some seriously cute photos and an adorable story, look no further. [Young Eventer Follows in Five Star Mom’s Footsteps]

Gypsy Vanner horses aren’t something we usually think about in the eventing world, but now they’re a subject in the equestrian community at large. The Gypsy Vanner horse has become the subject of recent online debate as the sensitivity of the term “Gypsy” faces a cultural reckoning. But getting to the bottom of the name—and whether it harms or helps the people it describes—is a thorny issue with an extraordinary history at its heels. [Is It Time for Gypsy Vanner’s To Find a New Name?]

Oh boy I have been spoiled this spring with some lovely cold weather at night, and the most wonderful 70-degree days, but I’m about to pay for it with at least a whole week in the 90s. The alarm clock gets earlier, my arms get browner, and my legs look vastly more pale in comparison. Such is the glamorous life of a horse girl.

The Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association has thrown its weight behind calls to cancel the Tokyo Olympics, saying hospitals are already overwhelmed as the country battles a spike in coronavirus infections less than three months from the start of the Games. A jump in infections has stoked alarm amid a shortage of medical staff and hospital beds in some areas of the Japanese capital, promoting the government to extend a third state of emergency in Tokyo and several other prefectures until May 31. The abdominal muscles play a vital role in stabilising a horse’s pelvis, spine and back and those horses with poor core strength will struggle with their movement and balance and be unable to reach peak performance. News From Around the Globe:

With selection trials now complete, the Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team expects to name its team for the Tokyo Olympic Games in less than three weeks. The team set a June 1 deadline for naming a three-member squad, direct reserves and a traveling alternate to compete in Tokyo. Under the new Olympic format approved in 2016, teams are reduced to three members, with no drop score, but substitutions allowed under certain circumstances. Individual medals will be determined by a second show jumping round among the top 25 finishers in the team event. [US Olympic Team Named by June 1st]

A dressage rider using cows to enhance her training? There’s a sentence I never thought I would type. But Kasey Perry-Glass’ husband Dana specializes in colt starting and groundwork, and has been asking Kasey to try working cattle with one of her upper-level prospects, Hutopia Van Bergsham, who struggles with confidence. The end result was taking her dressage horse to a western clinic, and finding out that it was incredibly helpful. [Working Cattle with a Dressage Horse for Confidence Building]

Twenty-five years ago, Kerry Millikin and her off-the-track Thoroughbred gelding, Out and About won the individual Olympic bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, making her one of five females to have earned an individual Olympic medal for the United States. Outie was only 8 years old at that time, and the Atlanta Olympics were the first Olympics with a new format of separate team and individual competitions for eventing. The individual competition had a different cross-country track and show jumping course than the team competition. The Great Gas Panic of 2021 has finally reached my area of Virginia, and it’s absolute pandemonium. I actually had to get gas today, and luckily I didn’t leave it until the light was blinking like I usually do, because I went past eight gas stations before finding one that actually had gasoline available. Then it was just a short thirty minute wait and I filled up, but I’m definitely judging how much I really need to take each trip over the next few days. How is the gas shortage affecting your horse show plans?

Let’s talk about body image in the equestrian sports. Let’s be real, a community based around tight pants and judgement isn’t exactly the ideal place for an inclusive ideology. Only recently have we been more open in discussing weight discrimination in horse sports, from availability in sizes for clothes, to judging bias. It’s time to grow. [Breeches That Fit]
