Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation Named Official Charity of LRK3DE 2022

In addition to showcasing top international eventing talent, the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event Presented by MARS Equestrian is committed to showing love to charities that support equine organizations and serve the local community. The event names a different official charity to benefit each year, and we are pleased to share that Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has been named the official charity of the 2022 event.

As the official charity, Grayson-Jockey Club Research will receive a portion of the proceeds from a special farm-to-table charity dinner on Thursday, April 28, in the Big Barn at the Kentucky Horse Park. A reception will be followed by a three-course dinner by local chefs Jeremy Ashby and Janey Thompson and an auction. A limited number of tickets ($90 per person) to the dinner are available here.

“We are deeply honored to be selected as the official charity of the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event,” said Dell Hancock, chairman of Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. “EEI’s commitment to helping non-profit organizations should be commended, especially given the financial challenges of the past year. Their generosity will help improve the lives of all horses, from three-day eventers to horses in your backyard.”

Since 1983, the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has provided more than $27.5 million to fund 366 projects at 44 universities in North America and overseas. Through the years, research funded by Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and its predecessor (the Grayson Foundation) has uncovered solutions to critical problems affecting horse health as well as clues to numerous other solutions of equine health issues.

“Over the years, EEI has maintained a strong commitment to supporting charities that serve the local community and support the equine industry,” said EEI president Mike Cooper. “This year, after so many individuals and organizations stood by us during the challenges presented by COVID-19, we are redoubling our commitment to giving back and we are thrilled to partner with the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation as our official charity.”

The Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event Presented by MARS Equestrian returns to the Kentucky Horse Park April 28-May 1, 2022. Visit the website for more information and to purchase tickets, and we hope to see you there!

The 2021 FEI WBFSH Eventing World Breeding Championship for Young Horses is still fresh in our minds even as we shift our focus to Le Lion to Pau. Now we can relive the final phase in its entirety thanks to watch-on-demand live stream videos.

To rewind, Germany’s Anna Lena Schaaf piloted her own Lagona 4 to become the Six-Year-Old World Champion, leading throughout the competition in her Le Lion debut. On Sunday she had no budge room to spare but pulled out a penalty-free round, allowing them to finish on their dressage score of 25.8 and secure the title.

In the Seven-Year-Old Championship, Australia’s Kevin McNab delivered a foot-perfect clear round to take a pillar to post victory with Scuderia 1918’s Holsteiner mare Cute Girl.

You can access all of EN’s live coverage from Le Lion here, and view final scores here.

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Five Charming Connemara Crosses

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

What do you get when you cross the toughness and bravery of a Connemara with the blood and heart of a Thoroughbred or the sportiness of its fellow countryman, the Irish Sport Horse? The ideal event horse! This week we’re drooling over five Connemara crosses that tick all the boxes, especially for a rider on the petite side like me — all stand under 16 hands. Four are located in Ocala, three of which are at Peach Stone Sport Horses, if you fancy a shopping trip!

A reminder to register your Connemara crosses with the American Connemara Pony Society as Connemara sport horses so that the ACPS can document successes of the breed and its crosses.

Lenny Kravitz

Lenny is a 7 year old 15.2 hand Connemara/TB cross, recently imported by Justine Dutton with an extensive clean vetting. Absolutely beautiful with an amateur/junior friendly temperament and three lovely paces. Lenny could go in any direction: eventing, jumpers, or straight dressage. With fox hunting and jumping miles in the UK and Ireland, he’s brave to the jumps while also being very easy to rate. He hacks out alone or in company and is very easy in the barn; great with the vet and farrier. With his lovely kind personality and obvious athletic ability, he’s going to make someone very happy. Sadly for sale due to unforeseen change in owner circumstances.

Available to try in Groton, MA with excellent trial facilities.

15.3 Oversized Imported 7 yr old Connemara x ISH

Boomer is so laid back and so much fun in all ways. He is the barn favorite! Not much fazes him and anyone can ride. He hunted and competed at training shows in Ireland and is now competing at schooling shows here in the U.S. (Update Aug. 24th: Just completed a three-phase on his dressage score!)

Brought on by amateur lady and he loves his people! Also had professional dressage training and could easily do straight dressage — nice mover but also brave to the jumps! Full five-stage vetting!

No vices, easy keeper and a super horse for Adult Amateur or Junior Rider who want to go out and get noticed!

Located in Ocala, Florida.

International and Grand Prix ponies can be found on both sides of his pedigree. His dam line boasts Grand Prix ponies such as Ni Oui Ni Non Tartifume and Violin II. His sire Westide Mirah II (WM2) needs no introduction, having jumped several Grand Prixs with child riders, currently jumps with an adult in the 1m25 and has won a 1m45 Puissance. His grandsire Westside Mirah is one of Ireland’s most successful sire of showjumping ponies.

#EventerProblems Vol. 279: Me No Do It

I have a human toddler whose favorite word is “no.” Assorted variations on the theme include “me no do it,” “me no like,” “nuh-uh,” “no no,” “no no no” and the classic “NOOOOOOOO MAMA NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!”

Horses and even us riders, too, have been known to occasionally regress into a toddler frame of mind. As demonstrated by some of this week’s batch of #EventerProblems snaps! Enjoy.

Don’t forget to tag ’em with #EventerProblems for inclusion in a future edition! Go Eventing.

Volunteer Nation: Eight Events That Could Use a Helping Hand This Weekend

Can we get one more big round of applause for the many, many hardworking volunteers of the inaugural Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill?! What an incredible community effort. As one reader recently put it, “Volunteering is a selfless act, and people don’t do it for personal acknowledgement but I think the body of volunteering as a whole should get a HUGE shout out. Events cannot run without volunteers.”

Shout-out to you all!

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Meanwhile, in Poland …

Libby Seed and Heartbreaker Star Quality. Photo by Leszek Wójcik.

As our heads finally begin to stop spinning from the Maryland 5 Star, we are reminded that other major international events took place over the weekend — such as Poland’s Strzegom October Festival.

There, British eventer Libby Seed won the CCI4*-L with the 10-year-old Heartbreaker Star Quality. After sitting fourth after dressage, they finished atop the leaderboard thanks to clear jumping rounds with just a smidge of time. Second place went to her compatriot James Sommerville with Talent, and Miroslav Trunda from the Czech Republic was third riding Shutterflyke.

Here’s a video of Libby’s ride:

Victory in the 3*-L went to Germany’s Andreas Dibowski riding Calahari. Vanessy Bölting with Ready To Go W was second, and Swedish rider Sara Algotsson Ostholt with Dynamite Jack were third.

The 2*-L winner was Australia’s Katja Weimann with Jeu de Blanc W before German riders Julia Schatzmann with Golden Evo KPSC and Anna Lena Schaaf with Lorsandos. The short-format 4* and 3* classes both went to German athletes, Anna Lena Schaaf with Fairytale 39 and Libussa Lübbeke with Darcy F respectively. Poland’s Karolina Miś with Go Jack won the CCI1*-Intro.

The European Youth Eventing Masters was dominated by Germans, who took the win in all age categories, both as a team and individually. Julia Warner with Clara, Christina Schöniger riding Schoensgreen Continus, Brandon Schäfer-Gehrau with Parkmore Emper and Felicia Von Baath with Quantum E bested the young rider category, and Felicia was also individual victor.

The best junior team was Emily Roberg with Donna Lena MV, Jule Krueger with D’Artagnan 216, Isabel Kristin Dalecki riding Caruso JH and Hedda Vogler with Niagara de Champenotte, with individual honors going to Sophia Rössel with Nickel 21.

Neele Hinrichsen riding Golden Gadget, Pita Schmid with Sietlands Catrina, Amelie Nottmeier with Katleen 3 and Merle Hoffmann na Penny Lane WE were the winners of the pony class, while Hoffmann also took home the individual best score.

Congrats to all! View complete results here.

Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Former Oliver Townend/Andrew Nicholson Ride Is Stateside & For Sale

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

Oliver Townend and Ulises. Photo by Abby Powell.

Last week we shared the story of a reunion between Oliver Townend and his former ride, Ulises, in the CCI3*-L National Championship at the Maryland 5 Star Event at Fair Hill (“A Familiar British Face in the 3*-L at Maryland: Oliver Reunites with Juli Sebring’s Ulises for a Catch-Ride“). Prior to Oliver, Ulises was campaigned by another Olympian, Andrew Nicholson.

The day after finishing third at Maryland on his dressage score of 29.4, we spotted Ulises on EN’s classifieds site, Sport Horse Nation.

Here’s the ad:

5 Star Qualified, 4 star winner just ridden by Oliver Townend at Maryland 5 Star

Ulises is a 14 yr old Spanish-bred, 16.1h top athlete for FEI competition. He is currently 5 star qualified and just finished the Maryland 5 Star CCI-3L national championship in 3rd with previous rider Oliver Townend. He very narrowly missed 2nd. Ulises was imported from the UK in June 2021 and spent the summer eventing almost every weekend. His dressage is effortless always putting in scores in the 20s, he is bold and point and shoot cross country, and he is a careful show jumper. This horse is best suited for a professional rider looking to go to the top. He is a sound war horse, ready and able for the job ahead. Very serious inquiries only.

Between Maryland and events abroad, we’ve accumulated quite a collection of Ulises photos in the EN database.

And here are a couple videos, neither terribly recent but gives you an idea of his quality and impressive tail-flip:

Ulises is listed at $125K and located in Fair Hill, Maryland. He just one of many top-class horses represented for sale via Sport Horse Nation. Visit the site and find your dream horse today!

#DogsofEventing: Maryland 5 Star Edition

Dog watching is almost as much fun as horse watching at big events, and the Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill went out of its way to make our canine companions feel right at home. From morning “Puppiccinos” at the KONG Equine Doggy Day Care and Dog Park to dog-focused vendors and charities (congrats to Charlie, Venus, Socks, Rockette and Paisley, who all found homes this weekend through Paws for Life Maryland!), it was a five-star experience for furry family members as well.

Here are a few of your doggy snaps from the event!

Do you have a “stress script”? Sports psychology coach Daniel Stewart explains the concept of “scripting,”
which happens when you prepare for inevitable challenges by writing and reciting a series of positive reminders (your script) whenever you begin to feel a bit bad or bummed out. The idea behind scripting is that it can be pretty hard harder to think of good things when you’re feeling bad, but that feeling bad gets a whole lot harder when you begin saying a bunch of good things!” [Pressure Proof: Scripting]

Sunday Maryland Instagram Roundup: One More for the Fans, New & Old

EN’s coverage of the Maryland 5 Star is brought to you by Kentucky Performance Products. KPP is our go-to for all things nutritional when it comes to supporting our horses and their healthier selves. Managing horses is a challenge, but KPP makes it simple — and they treat you like a horse owner, not just a customer. You can learn more about KPP by clicking here.

One of the greatest challenges facing eventing today is the question of how to connect with the larger community. How do we make our sport more accessible, more inclusive, more relevant? Existing within an insular bubble is a surefire route to extinction, and more importantly, what is a sport even worth if it does not actively endeavor to engage with and contribute to the greater good of society?

We are impressed at how the Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill went above and beyond to make its inaugural event a destination not for riders, but a celebratory bonding experience for its host community and beyond. Kudos to Governor Larry Hogan and Cecil County Executive Danielle Hornberger, along with the entire Maryland 5 Star leadership team and all of the event’s sponsors and vendors.

And most of all, a huge thank you to all those who came out to watch the action. Whether new fans to eventing or old, a sport can only thrive if there are folks out there who wish to follow it. And who knows? Maybe, after this weekend, they will be inspired to try their hand at riding themselves.

Nothing puts one’s heart in one’s throat like a dramatic drop fence, and there were some epic ones on Ian Stark’s Maryland 5 Star cross country track. For obvious reasons they were destination jumps for both professional and amateur photographers, as horses stretched out their landing gear and riders did their darnedest to keep up. Here are a few of your best shots, as spotted on Instagram:

#EventerProblems Vol. 278: Oh Crab!

Undoubtedly the strangest and most fearsome crustacean ever to appear on a cross country course in history, fence #15A on the inaugural Maryland 5 Star Course has attracted plenty of double-takes. This crab would be giving me nightmares if it was six inches long and dressed with garlic butter on my dinner plate, much less whatever whopper dimensions it actually is.

After horses take the plunge, they’ll shake the water out of their ears and head on to an up bank to a log at 15CD, followed by a brush arrowhead at 15E. You can watch Ian explain this question here, and you can check out EN’s course preview here.

Here are a few of your snaps of this legit #EventerProblem. Five-star cross country begins at 12:20 p.m., moved up from its original 1 p.m. start time, so we’ll get to see how it jumps here shortly! Best of luck to all.

Photos don’t always do the enormousness of a cross country course justice, even when we stick a small stuffed animal in the shot for scale. So we’re thankful for these videos from Law Eventing, with Leslie Law (who sits 21st after dressage with Voltaire de Tre) marching ahead dutifully while wife Lesley Grant-Law hangs back, offering some hilariously frank armchair commentary.

Well for those that believe endurance gone from Eventing prepare to b proven wrong. Move over Kentucky. There a bigger…

Thursday Video: Meanwhile, in Doug Payne’s Spare Time …

Doug Payne and Quantum Leap. Photo by Abby Powell.

Doug Payne, a person who can’t just be a five-star eventer and leave well enough alone, prepped himself and his stable for the Maryland 5 Star with a show jumping outing last weekend at Tryon International Equestrian Center. In addition to piloting Jane Dudinsky’s 2011 Holsteiner gelding Quintessence to a four-fault round in the CSI** Grand Prix and a 3rd place finish in the 1.45-meter FEI Speed Class …

… he treated his Maryland ride Quantum Leap to a crack at the 1.30-meter class.

They’ll take to the centerline tomorrow.

Doug is also 10th in the CCI3*-L with Camarillo, a 7-year-old gelding (Chicardo x Rihobeth, by Riverman) owned by the rider and Patrice Jennings-Rado. Their test:

Never stop being good at everything, Doug. In return, we’ll never stop hating you for it.
