Dressage Divas: Pratoni Thursday Afternoon Live Updates

Good morning — again! We’re back with the afternoon session (or for North Americans watching, the slightly less early morning session) of day one of dressage at 2022 FEI World Championships for Eventing.

If you’re just pouring your first cup of coffee and joining us, you can catch up on the today’s first session via Sally’s live updates here and via Tilly’s mid-day report here.

Germany’s Sandra Auffarth and Viamant du Matz will be kicking this session off for us at 8:00 a.m. EST. Here’s a couple other notable ride times this session:

11:40 a.m. EST: Well that was an excellent first day of dressage, indeed! The top ten is chock-full of super competitive scores, and we still have a lot to look forward to tomorrow. Great Britain’s Laura Collett and London 52 lead the way with the only sub-20 score so far — will we see another before the first phase is over?

Great Britain, New Zealand, and the U.S. all have two riders in the top ten are therefore hold the top three spots in the team competition.

11:33 a.m. EST: Cyrielle Lefevre and Armanjo Serosah have earned a provisional 35.0 and that’s officially a wrap on day one of dressage!I’ll bring you a little roundup of the scores as they stand in a second.

11:25 a.m. EST: Armanjo Serosah simply will not put his ears up for this test! He’d like us all to know that he’s here for the running and the jumping, thanks very much. Even so, he’s playing nice and Cyrielle is riding a relaxed test.

11:25 a.m. EST: Cyrielle Lefevre and Armanjo Serosah of France will bring things home for us today. Armanjo Serosah just holds herself just above the bit and lacks a bit of connection, though she has a nice cadence.

11:19 a.m. EST: Solid test from Sanne de Jong and Enjoy, who’s a homebred of hers. They score a 33.2 and now we’re down to the last rider of the day!

11:19 a.m. EST: Nicolas has scored a 39.4 and it looks like there’s a storm a brewing in Pratoni. The sky has gotten noticeable darker and the wind gusts are still present. We’re now joined by Sanne de Jong and Enjoy for the Netherlands.

11:13 a.m. EST: Ecuador’s Nicolas Wettstein and Meyer’s Happy, who bases in Switzerland, are doing their test now. Lucinda is noting over the commentary that the horse has an interesting way of going so while Nicolas may be riding accurate, he won’t get the highest of scores. Meyer’s Happy just looks a bit disconnected back to front, which gives him a fittingly jaunty look about him.

11:09 a.m. EST: Nice test from Dana and Mississippi! They’ve scored a 34.1 which slots them just ahead of Canadian team rider, Hawley Bennett-Awad.

11:02 a.m. EST: Mississippi is sporting a super short summer haircut. Ma’am, your piebald is showing.

11:02 a.m. EST: Here’s our last north American of the day! It’s Dana Cooke and Mississippi, who were called up to replace Colleen Loach and Vermont after Vermont sustained an injury in their final outing. Evelina earned a really respectable 30.0 for her nice test.

10:56 a.m. EST: This is a really super looking pair and they’re putting in a strong test! They look connected and accurate to my eye and they’ve earned some great scores for their walk, halt, and rein back in particular.

10:52 a.m. EST: Italy’s individual pair, Evelina Bertoli and Fidjy des Melezes, a really gorgeous dark bay mare, now enter the ring.

10:52 a.m. EST: Malgorzata and Canvalencia earn a 35.7 provisionally. They lost out on a couple of points in some of the later canter work.

10:47 a.m. EST: Malgorzata Korycka and Canvalencia for Poland are in the ring now. Canvalencia is a super cute mover:

10:44 a.m. EST: Mia is getting a classical rendition of Lead Zepplin’s Kashmir as background music, which I kind of love. She’s happy with her test! They’ve earned a 36.9 provisionally.

10:40 a.m. EST: The next seven riders that we’ll see today are all riding as individuals for their countries. Now in the ring is Mia Hastrup, one of two pairs for Denmark, riding Shjabrina.

10:37 a.m. EST: Marcio and Kit Kat put a 33.6 on the board for the moment for Brazil. With three team members now they’ll have no drop score at the end of the weekend.

10:31 a.m. EST: We’re back with the final session for the day. We have 8 pairs left to go, the first of which is Marcio Carvalho Jorge and Kilcoltrim Kit Kat for Brazil. In case you missed the news from earlier today, Brazil is now down to three team members after Ruy Fonseca withdrew Ballypatrick SRS this morning.

10:14 a.m. EST: Alright, we’re on another drag break for the next 15 minutes. Katrin and Oklahoma 2 have earned a 36.9.

10:12 a.m. EST: Oklahoma 2 and Katrin just had the nicest stretchy canter circle. Their rhythm didn’t change a beat and Oklahoma 2 just looks happy.

10:10 a.m. EST: Katrin Khoddam-Hazrati is now between the boards with Oklahoma 2, who just looks like a real sweetheart for some reason. He’s got a real kind eye and looks like he’s trying super hard for his mum. Let’s also take a moment of appreciation for the Austrian tailcoats:

10:06 a.m. EST: A little bobble in the last flying change will just barely keep Hazel and Clifford from scoring sub-30. They earn a provisional score of 30.3.

10:04 a.m. EST: Hazel is a really lovely rider with virtually imperceptible aids. You can tell this pair really know each-other — as they should, considering they’ve been together for over ten years!

10:00 a.m. EST: Well, that’s a tough act to follow, but between the board now we have another 5*-winning pair, Australia’s Hazel Shannon and Willingapark Clifford, three-time Adelaide winners

9:57 a.m. EST: Picture perfect! That was a heck of a test as expected — accurate, expressive, just everything we’ve come to expect this Badminton-winning pair. And we have a SUB 20 SCORE ALERT! They’ve earned a provisional 19.3, and she takes over the lead from her countrywoman Yasmin Ingham, who’s riding for GB as an individual.

9:52 a.m. EST: Yep, this is going to be a big one. London 52 looks his usual big-moving, fabulous self in the trot work and their score is trending in first place.

9:50 a.m. EST: Yoshi and Cale show their experience and lay down a really solid test earning a 28.0. Next in the ring is a can’t miss test — it’s Laura Collett and London 52!

9:45 a.m. EST: Next up in the ring and already through their trot work are Yoshi Oiwa and Calle 44 for Japan — this is their second World Games as a pair, as we saw them in Tryon.

9:42 a.m. EST: This is looking goooood! Little Bug looked so attentive throughout their test and Lauren looks happy as she salutes the judges … and YES they score a 27.0! They’ll slot into 6th place provisionally, just behind Will and Clarke. That means Team USA also has two in the top ten, thankyouverymuch.

9:37 a.m. EST: Bug and Lauren both are looking super relaxed and accurate through their trot work. They’re trending around 27 penalties at the moment.

9:34 a.m. EST: Alright, here we go with Lauren Nicholson and Vermiculus! Let’s go Bug!!

9:33 a.m. EST: That’s an excellent start for Team New Zealand! Clarke scores a provisional 27.4, which means that both they and Team GB now have two pairs in the top ten at the moment.

9:31 a.m. EST: Clarke looks as if he’s just enjoying a nice pony ride aboard Menlo Park. He’s got reason to smile too as they’re trending sub-30.

9:27 a.m. EST: The fly or whatever it was has buzzed off and Bryjamolga van het Marienshof Z has settled down within her canter work. Sofia looks so pleased as they finish their test! They’ve scored a provisional 32.8. New Zealand’s Clarke Johnstone is up next.

9:23 a.m. EST: Uhoh, Bryjamolga van het Marienshof Z has got a figurative bee in her bonnet, more likely a literal fly or something, just before they do their halt and rein back. She’s now shaking her head quite a bit but Sofia is so, so patient with her as she waits for her to settle before taking those steps backward. The mare is still head shaking throughout their transition to canter, but Sofia is riding through it.

9:21 a.m. EST: Sofia is another youngster within the field, at 24 years old. She’s got a great smile on her face throughout her test.

9:17 a.m. EST: I would totally take Uter home. He’s not the flashiest horse, but he really listened to Marco the whole way through and tried his very best. Marco salutes the judges and gives him a kiss on the neck! Next up in the ring will be Sofia Sjorborg.

9:14 a.m. EST: A nice test so far for Marco and Uter. They won’t be challenging the top of the leaderboard, but they’re putting in a super workmanlike test.

9:11 a.m. EST: We’re back underway with Marco Cappai and the gorgeous grey, Uter, riding for the home crowd. We also got an updated/finalized score for Tom Carlile during the drag break and he doesn’t actually slot into second place like we thought — he earns a 26.4 which puts him in equal fourth place with our own Will Coleman. Lucinda notes that the judges likely reviewed one of the flying changes during the break.

8:54 a.m. EST: Melody finished her test and looks happy to have that done! We’re now entering a short break to drag the ring. The next test will start at 9:09!

8:51 a.m. EST: Spoke too soon! Toubleu de Rueire throws in what is essentially a capriole after the rein back and there’s an audible gasp from the spectators. Melody has a good head on her shoulders (and a good seat in the saddle too!) though and has brought him right back to work.

8:50 a.m. EST: Lucinda notes that Toubleu de Rueire really enjoyed himself at yesterday’s horse inspection and had a great time showing off how sound he is. So far he’s keeping a lid on his enthusiasm within the boards, though.

8:48 a.m. EST: Gonzalo will score a 33.0 provisionally as we welcome Switzerland’s Melody Johner and Toubleu de Rueire — who’s looking quite fit as he enters the arena!

8:42 a.m. EST: Here’s Gonzalo Blasco Botin and the French-bred Sij Veux d’Autize in the ring now. They’re looking quite relaxed and accurate, but Lucinda notes that the horse doesn’t have as big movements as some of the other competitors.

8:38 a.m. EST: That really was quite a test from Tom Carlile and Darmagnac de Beliard! He’s just slotted into second place on a 25.5. Jamo now wraps up his test and looks so happywith Mahali, giving her big pats and a kiss on the neck after their salute. They’ve just scored an even 30.0 and should be rightfully pleased with that!

8:34 a.m. EST: All the flower boxes have now been removed from the ring and the youngest competitor in the field at just 21-years-old, Jamo Verwimp of Belgium, are now in the ring and performing their test.

8:28 a.m. EST: This is one impressive 9-year-old. Darmagnac de Beliard is a gorgeous mover and has a great brain to boot! A couple of the flower boxes at the letters have been knocked over thanks to a gust of wind during his test, but the horse didn’t bat an eyelash.

8:23 a.m. EST:Tom Carlile and Darmagnac de Beliard are now in the ring and have already impressed Lucinda with a super straight centerline.

8:23 a.m. EST: We have just a small pause in action after Karl finishes his test — the wind has picked up again and it’s all hands on deck for a moment to secure some of the flower boxes. Karl has scored a 38.0 also, the same score as his predecessor in the ring — he and Susie will share an equal 19th place as it stands.

8:20 a.m. EST: Lucinda Green, who’s back in the commentary box, notes that “Chocy” has a slightly different way of going than other horses we’ve seen so far today. He carries himself a bit more round and with a bit “stabbier” gaits. That doesn’t stop him from getting it done and he’s also just thrown down the best halt and rein back that Lucinda says she’s seen yet today .

8:18 a.m. EST: Canada’s Karl Slezak and Fernhill Wishes are in the house! I’m slightly disappointed that they’re still piping nice classical music into the arena and not Nickelback. I mean, could we at least get a Bridgerton-esque arrangement of Photograph?

8:17 a.m. EST: Susie and Monbeg By Design finish their test and earn a 38.0 — she looks pretty pleased and maybe a little relieved too!

8:08 a.m. EST: Sandra and Viamant du Matz will score a respectable 31.8 and Ireland’s Susie Berry enters the rings now on Monbeg By Design to make her senior championships debut.

8:06 a.m. EST: Viamant du Matz is not making things the easiest for Sandra — he’s looking fit and spicy as he’s taking a few peeks here and there at some of the flower boxes and giving an extra hop at Sandra’s aids for one of the flying changes.

8:00 a.m. EST: And we’re back underway! Sandra Auffarth and Viamant du Matz are down the center line for Germany.

Monday Video: All Things Burghley and Pratoni with Jon and Rick (& Special Guests!)

It’s a Burghley and World Championships bonanza on the latest episode of The Jon and Rick Show! Hosts Jon Holling and Rick Wallace welcome two fantastic guests this week.

Cornelia Dorr, fresh off her top ten finish a her 5* debut at Burghley, tells our hosts how she’s adapted to Daytona Beach 8’s spicy style and gives us a play-by-play of how her Burghley weekend went. Daniela Moguel, who’ll be representing Mexico at the World Championships later this week, then joins the show and tells us about preparing for her second World Championships (including all the things that have made her want to bubble wrap Cecelia!).

Jon and Rick also have some interesting talking points at the beginning of this episode, including discussing Derek di Grazia’s course design and the use of brush fences and frangible devices, the value of a horse who might not be competitive on the flat but can jump clear around the biggest tracks in the world, as well as some thoughts on structuring a World Championship or Olympic team.

Get an Early Look at Entries for the Maryland 5 Star

While we have an exciting week ahead of us with the 2022 FEI Eventing World Championships literally just around the corner, we can’t forget that we’re in for another real treat later this fall as we’ll witness the second annual running of the Maryland 5 Star, freshly dubbed the MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill presented by Brown Advisory, which is set to take place October 13-16 at the Fair Hill Special Event Zone in Cecil County, MD.

Entries close this Tuesday, September 13, so it’s certainly still early days as far as the competition line-up is concerned, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start getting pumped about who we’ll be seeing galloping across Fair Hill in October.

CCI5*-L

Of course our eyes will always be scanning the list of entries for the marquee event first, so let’s start there. There are currently seven entrants in 5*, but again, we’ll expect to see a much longer list after entries close this week.

Last year Will Coleman and DonDante were the very first pair to ever cross the 5* finish flags in Maryland, and they’ll be back for another run this year. The 12-year-old gelding has improved his finishing place with each 5* start (this will be his fourth) most recently finishing seventh at Kentucky this spring. But Will won’t have his mind on Maryland right now, no — he’s currently en route to Pratoni alongside teammate Lauren Nicholson, who also has a Maryland entry in Landmark’s Monte Carlo, who finished 6th here last year. Another strong pair who’ll be running the course for the second time are Hannah Sue Hollberg and Harbour Pilot.

As it currently stands, Jennie Brannigan will ride two horses in this division: FE Lifestyle, who’ll make his third start at the level, and Twilightslastgleam, who’ll be making his first.

We’re delighted to see Woods Baughman and C’est La Vie 135 on the entry list after their Burghley debut didn’t go to plan. The pair were eliminated roughly a third of the way around the course and appear to be rerouting for another shot at a fall five-star.

We’ve also spotted our first 5* first timer to grace this year’s entry list in Zach Brandt, riding fellow 5* debutante Direct Advance.

CCI3*-L

The USEF CCI3*-L Eventing National Championship will once again run alongside the Maryland 5 Star, providing a thoroughly action-packed and exciting weekend of eventing. There are currently 34 pairs signed up to vie for the title. Will Coleman and Jennie Brannigan have horses entered in this division as well: Will on Cold Red Rum and Jennie on Amazing Anthem, a half-sibling to Twilightslastgleam.

A number of riders currently have multiple horses entered in this division: Dana Cooke, Courtney Cooper, Andrew McConnon, Cassie Sanger, Briggs Surratt, Elisa Wallace, and Arden Wildasin.

Boyd Martin, who won the inaugural CCI5*-L here last year with On Cue, currently has one entry in this division with Miss LuLu Herself.

Once again, entries close on Tuesday so riders have a couple more days to declare their fall plans for Maryland. We’ll be very much looking forward to sharing a complete entry list with you later on. What other top Americans will try to follow in Boyd’s footsteps for another home-turf 5* win? Who’ll be making the trip from across the pond? What other 5* first-timers might we get to cheer on? We’ll have to wait to find out!

It’s flashback … Sunday, I guess. As we usher in the week of the 2022 FEI Eventing World Championships, it seems fitting to share this photo of the 1998 New Zealand eventing team who won gold the last time Pratoni hosted eventing for the World Championships. This motley crew was made up of a young Blyth Tait (middle left) who won individual gold, Vaughn Jefferis (middle right) who finished fourth, Sir Mark Todd (far right) who won individual silver, and Sally Clark (not pictured). Andrew Nicholson (far left) also represented New Zealand individually and finished 5th.

Will history repeat itself and will New Zealand bring home the gold in Pratoni again? We’re going to find out this week!

Saturday Links from World Equestrian Brands

There’s been an unfortunate plot twist for endurance athletes, as it was announced yesterday that the FEI Endurance World Championship that was set to take place in Verona, Italy this October has been canceled. Everyone at EN nearly had a heart attack when we saw the words ‘FEI’, ‘Italy, and ‘canceled’ all together in a sentence, but eventers have nothing to fear — the road to Pratoni continues! — though we are majorly disappointed for our fellow equestrian athletes who have been preparing for this opportunity.

FEI Board confirmed the termination of the Host Agreement over concerns “including but not limited to track readiness, athlete safety, and the lack of detailed planning schedules in the lead up to the Championship.” A rescheduled championship will take place no later that April 30, 2023 and the bid process will be reopened.

Monday Video: Can We Fangirl Over Cornelia Dorr a Little More?

Pardon us while we fangirl over our top-placing American at Burghley, Cornelia Dorr, just a little bit more. Not only was the 24-year-old and her mare, Daytona Beach 8, one of the 47% of combinations that completed the cross country clear of jumping faults, they were also only one of 8 pairs to complete it with less than 10 time penalties. Their exceptional cross country round rocketed them from 50th position after dressage up to 16th ahead of show jumping. But wait there’s more: out of the 28 combinations to jump on Sunday, Cornelia and Daytona were one of just 6 to show jump double clear. They put an exclamation point on their weekend by earning a 10th place finish, climbing 40 places in the overall standings throughout the weekend and once again proving that eventing — and Burghley in particular — is not a dressage show.

Cornelia and Daytona’s partnership has developed over the last few years. Prior to Cornelia’s ride on Daytona, the mare had been competed through the former 2* level with Sandra Auffarth.

We managed to find videos from Cornelia and Daytona’s first event together in the Open Training at the Florida Horse Park in early 2019. Take a look at the first cross country round for this superstar pair below!

On to the next! Now that Burghley and the are AECs done and dusted, it’s all cylinders firing for the a little event called the World Championships.  At this point, we’re just a week and half away and Team USA is officially in transit. The team has been hosted at the farm of fellow eventer, Erika Nesseler, for a bit after their final mandatory outing at Great Meadow and they’ve now touched down in Vittel, France where they’ll base prior to the start of of the competition in Pratoni, Italy.

What an incredible day of cross country we watched at Burghley yesterday! This kid is headed into showjumping in 16th place — the highest placed American — after rocketing from 50th after dressage thanks to a clear and speedy round. Alright, alright, she’s not exactly a kid anymore (the flashback photo above by Flatlandsfoto is from a local event in 2009) but 5* rookie Cornelia Dorr is still one of the youngest in the competition this weekend. Her beautiful round yesterday made Area I and beyond very proud!

Today’s second horse inspection begins at 9.30 AM BST/4.30 AM EST and I’m guessing it’ll be completed by the time most are reading this! Click here for the latest.

The above image is an actual diagrammatic representation of my brain trying to understand the alternate route options on Derek di Grazia’s Burghley cross country course. You know, just spinning in circles! This isn’t even the craziest of the complexes either. Make sure you check out the course map here and take a little peek at at those ABCDE and ABCDEF complexes. That’s right — there’s two complexes with six whole letters go the alphabet!

The Burghley cross country action begins as 11:30 AM local / 6:30 AM Eastern / 3:30 AM Pacific time. Sally will be getting up at an ungodly hour to run live updates, so you can follow along with minute-by-minute updates that way. With all the hubbub surrounding the return of Burghley this weekend and the FEI World Championships of Eventing in Pratoni in two weeks time, don’t forget — it’s time for the American Eventing Championships! Competitors have made (or are perhaps still making) the long drive to beautiful Kalispell, Montana where there will be five full days of eventing beginning today with dressage for the Advanced, Intermediate, Preliminary, and Modified divisions. Monday Video: Big Burghley Fences, Teeny Tiny Bicycle

The whole EN team is completely keyed up and excited for the return of The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials this week (yeah, it’s basically September already! Can you believe it?) and after a two year COVID-induced hiatus I wasn’t sure if anything else could could get me looking forward to streaming Burghley cross country this Saturday even more than I already am. Oddly enough though, this video has done just that — and there isn’t even a single horse in it!

This video features professional Trials Rider, Duncan Shaw of Scotland, as he tackles some of the biggest Burghley fences on his teeny tiny bicycle. Trial Biking is extreme sport where competitors navigate an obstacle course and penalties are awarded for setting foot or hand on the ground. The lowest score at the end of the competition wins. Sounds a little familiar, no?

These fences always look enormous even with a 16.3-hand Warmblood in the frame for reference, but get ready to appreciate their size and scale on a whole new level thanks to this video.

P.S. My sincerest apologies to any Trials Riders out there reading this — I’ve literally just Googled your sport, but I see you and I appreciate you as a fellow participant in a sport of insanity. Come jump more cross country courses!

MARS Great Meadow International 4*-S Live Updates

Good afternoon from MARS Great Meadow International! We’re anxiously awaiting the start of the CCI4*-S class, where we’ll see our potential Pratoni World Championship pairs strut their stuff in the hopes of team selection, along with many many other top combinations looking to start their fall season off in style.

Our fearless leader Sally Spickard is on the ground in Virginia and I’ll be bringing you a play-by-play of the action remotely. If you missed the previous two days of action, check out yesterday’s report here.

3:27 PM: Here are your top ten pairs at MARS Great Meadow International! Stay tuned for the full report from Sally a bit later.

3:22 PM: Through the finish flags for Tamie and Lexus aaaannnnd…. they pick up 6.4 time penalties, which means the race car driver Liz Halliday-Sharp and the The Monster Partnership’s Cooley Quicksilver clinch the win! What a fantastic season this pair is having. Tamie wasn’t exactly wasting time, but she’s got a little thing called the World Championships next month to be keeping in mind. These two highly competitive female riders gave us a tense finish to #MARSGMI, that’s for sure.

3:20 PM: A piece of cake through the coffin at fence 17 for Tamie and Lexus — they’re in the home stretch now.

3:19 PM: Argh, one little second over time for Liz and Monster! Tamie is likely going for a nice positive outing before Pratoni, but she’s got 11 seconds in hand over Liz so it’ll still be down to the wire for the win today.

3:18 PM: Liz totally looks like she’s going for it as she encourages Monster on through the MARS Sustainability Bay. Tamie and “Lexus” are easily through 11AB.

3:16 PM: Liz and “Monster” make the 12ABCD complex look like child’s play. With Will and Chin Tonic HS withdrawn, our final pair and leaders after the show jumping, Tamie Smith and Mai Baum are also out on course now! Time sure does fly when you’re watching cross country.

3:13 PM: Now we have Liz Halliday-Sharp and Cooley Quicksilver on course as well. This pair won the Lexington 4*S held in conjunction with the Kentucky Three-Day Event this spring and then earned a top 5 finish at Luhmühlen 5* the following month. They’re flying so far!

3:12 PM: Boyd Martin and Federman B are also out fo the box and already through 11AB.

3:09 PM: Buck and Carlevo were so fast, they’ve already finished by the time I was catching up typing scores! They’re home clear with 4.4 time penalties. That slots them into 4th provisionally. And whoa! Phillip Dutton and Carlchen, also on course now, slide over the log at 12A. Phillip sits it and they complete the rest of the complex.

3:04 PM: We’re back underway now with Buck Davidson and Carlevo — another alternate pair for Pratoni. This team had such an excellent showing at Kentucky this spring.

3:01 PM: Plot twist! We’ve just heard that second placed Will Coleman and Chin Tonic HS have withdrawn and will not run XC. Ever the consummate horseman, Will is likely saving the young horse’s legs for bigger things this fall. We have a couple other score updates for you too:

  • Tamie Smith and Solaguayre California: 20 jumping penalties, 17.6 time penalties.
  • Ariel Grald and Leamore Master Plan: clear jumping, 8 time penalties.
  • Kaelen Speck and Charmed Victory: 20 jumping penalties, 30.8 time penalties.
  • Hannah Sue-Hollberg and Carsonstown: 20 jumping penalties, 24.8 time penalties.
  • Lillian Heard had a frangible pin at 4A and then a runout at 4B before retiring.

2:59 PM: Hmm. We’ve just heard that there’s a hold on course for a fence repair at 4AB and Lillian  Heard and Cooley Gentlemen appear to be walking off course at that spot. We didn’t see hat happened, but it looks like the pair is OK but will not continue on course.

2:55 PM: Shoot! Carsonstown doesn’t lock on to the B element of 4AB and Hannah will pick up a 20 there. Ariel and Simon are still going easy but having a great ride andSimon’s tail is still acting like a propeller!

2:54 PM: Hannah Sue-Hollberg and Carsonstown are on course now. Ariel and Simon are having a great steady ride and are through the first water at 11AB.

2:50 PM: Kaelen Speck and Charmed Victory are our newest on course, but they’ve just picked up a refusal at 9B. We’ve also got Ariel Grald and Leamore Master Plan fresh out of the box, with “Simon” swishing his tail in anticipation of the fences to come. If they go double clear they’ll slot into the clubhouse lead with a 30.9. It’s been a real joy watching this pair blossom and we can’t wait to see them in Pratoni next month.

2:46 PM: Dang! Tamie Smith and Solaguayre California have an early runout of course as well — we haven’t seen them on camera yet. They were the ones tied for fourth with Will, but that won’t be true anymore, sadly. Shannon Lilley and Ideal HX are home with 20 jumping faults from the corner complex plus 19.2 time penalties.

2:44 PM: Liz and Deniro Z ping easily through the GIANT picnic table while Will and Timmy make easy work of the water at 11AB.

2:42 PM: Another exciting pair is on course with us now: it’s Will Coleman again, this time with Pratoni-bound Off The Record. He’s riding a bit out of order, as “Timmy” is currently tied for fourth on a score of 27.9.

2:41 PM: Liz Halliday-Sharp and Ocala Horse Properties’ Deniro Z are on course now and have made easy work of the 9ABC corner complex. Phillip and Z are home with 16.8 time penalties. Shannon Lilley and Ideal HX are through the MARS Sustainability Bay

2:38 PM: Also on course now are Shannon Lilley and Ideal HX, but darn, they pick up a runout at the last of the corners at 9ABC. Boyd indeed gave Thomas a nice easy run: they’re home with 12 time penalties. Phillip and Z are nearing the end of the course and also don’t look to be in a particular rush.

2:34 PM: Our traveling reserve pair for Team USA, Phillip Dutton and Z, are now on course. Heather Gillette and Vincent Chase are home clear with 23.2 time penalties.

2:30 PM: Boyd doesn’t look in a rush to complete the course. He’s just out there have a nice gallop and and easy pre-championships run. Meanwhile, uh-oh, Jennie Brannigan and Global Ex have an early runout on course and Jennie puts her hand up. This is a new partnership — Jennie is temporarily in the irons for Hallie Coon — so Jennie decides to save things for another day.

2:28 PM: Close, but no cigar! Lauren and Patrick take home 2.8 time penalties on top of their lovely clear round. It sure looked like they might have been going for the time. Heather Gillette and Vincent Chase now join us on course while Boyd and “Thomas” near the back third of the course — looking good and clear so far. Doug and Camarillo are home clear with 22 time penalties.

2:25 PM: Here comes a round to watch: Pratoni-bound pair Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg are on course now and through fence 6. Lindsay Traisnel and Bacyrouge are home clear with 21.2 time penalties.

2:23 PM: Whoa! Looks like Camarillo stepped on a bell boot or something in the MARS Sustainability Bay and got a little tripped up — like stepping on your shoelaces. He and Doug scramble a bit over the fence on the way out of the water, but they make it and Doug puts the gas pedal down on the other side. Lauren and “Patrick” are FLYING and get the most beautiful ride through the giant brush and double corners at 9ABC.

2:21 PM: Fresh out of the box, its Lauren Nicholson and Landmark’s Monte Carlo. I’m gassed after a single Beginner Novice course, I don’t know how these riders manage multiple rides, especially at this level.

2:19 PM: Doug Payne is back already — this time with the striking grey Camarillo, this is one of Doug’s younger horses at the level and they’ve already made easy work of the first water . Lindsay and Bacyrouge make easy work of the MARS Sustainability. Tamie and Danito have finished clear with 3.6 time penalties — what an exciting round for that pair! They have the clubhouse lead now on a score of 33.0, ahead of Will and DonDante on a 34.8.

2:15 PM: Tamie and Danito give us a masterclass through the MARS Sustainability Bay and Canada’s Lindsay Traisnel and Bacyrouge are now on course as well.

2:12 PM: Tamie Smith and Danito have joined us and are about halfway around the course already. They’re looking completely on form. Mia Farley and Phelps are home clear and gather just 1.6 time penalties for the second fastest round of the day. OTTB power! Zach Brandt and Direct Advance have also completed the course with their 20 penalties and some time.

2:11 PM: Eek! Our newest on course, Daniel Poulsen and Capability Brown have retired after the horse padded the ground and slid over the log ahead of the down bank at fence 12. They then run by the other elements of this combination and Danielle calls it a day. Bummer!

2:08 PM: Mia Farley is on course now with a very strong and eager Phelps. This is a young horse she’s quite excited about, and I can see why! He’s totally in the zone and locked onto every fence. Mia is getting a real arm workout though, trying to hold him back. He is a former racehorse after all!

2:03 PM: We have our first double clear of the day! Phillip Dutton and OTTB Sea of Clouds have come home bang on the optimum time. I’m a little behind on reporting scores so here’s a couple more:

  • Jennie Brannigan and FE Lifestyle: clear with 2.8 time penalties.
  • Sarah Kuhn and Mr. Cash van de Start: clear with 27.6 time penalties.
  • Doug Payne and Quantum Leap: clear with 5.6 time penalties.
  • Lauren Nicholson and Vermiculus: clear with 7.2 time penalties.
  • Holly Jacks-Smither and Candy King: clear with 16 time penalties.

2:01 PM: We’ve just had word that Zach Brandt and Direct Advance have had an early runout on course — not sure where, as we haven’t seem him on the livestream yet.

1:59 PM: We’ve got Phillip Dutton and Seas of Clouds out on course now and about halfway through, plus Buck Davidson is back with his second ride of the day, Erroll Gobey.

1:55 PM: Ahh! Holly gets tipped forward over the first element of fence 12, but she get’s back in the driver seat just in time for the drop at the B element.

1:53 PM: Holly Jacks-Smither and Candy King, a Pratoni-bound pair for Team Canada, are also on course now and Candy King is another horse excited to get out there today! He’s a bit on the muscle starting out.

1:52 PM: One of our Pratoni-bound pairs Lauren Nicolson and Vermiculus a.k.a. “Bug” are now on course and they’re pinging easily over everything so far! You can tell Bug is pretty stoked to be getting to run and jump — his little Anglo-Arab tail is flying high! Katie Lichten and Yarrow unfortunately pick up a refusal at the jump into the MARS Sustainability Bay and Katie decides to call it a day.

1:48 PM: Our newest pair on course now are Katie Lichten and Yarrow. I have to give Katie and her family a little shout out — they own the beautiful Aquila Farm is Hamilton, Massachusetts which has an amazing cross country schooling field that they keep open to local riders. It’s an incredible resource to have in my area!

1:45 PM: On course now we have Sarah Kuhn and Mr. Cash van de Start along with our CCI5* National Champions Doug Payne and the young Quantum Leap. Erin Kanara and Campground are home clear with 17.6 time penalties, as are Jill and Obos Darko.

1:40 PM: Oh dear, we just caught up with Alina Patterson and Flashback who were our newest on course, but Alina has popped off at, I believe, the fence 12 complex. Alina is up, but visibly bummed and Flashback is taking himself on a little walk back to the stables.

1:36 PM: Jill Thomas and Obos Darko are on course and catch a funky stride to the A element of 9ABC. They then have a runout at the corner B element but they get it on the second try. Meanwhile, Jennie has a bit of a flyer into the MARS Sustainability Bay, but she pops herself back into the tack quickly like the pro she is and carries on.

1:32 PM: Sydney and Q are home with 5.2 time penalties and now we have two additional pairs on course: Erin Kanara and Campground, who are already through the coffin complex at fence 17 cleanly, as well as Jennie Brannigan and FE Lifestyle, another alternate pair for Pratoni.

1:28 PM: Sydney Elliott and QC Diamantaire, one of the alternate pairs named for the World Championships team, are now on course and looking good so far. Both Will and Buck have now finished the course and picked up some time: 4 time penalties and 12.4 time penalties respectively.

1:22 PM: Will Coleman and his direct reserve horse for Pratoni, DonDante, are out the box and on course now — this pair is in 12th place, so they’re riding out of order since Will has two other rides in this division. Buck and Sorocaima are having a lovely clean ride so far.

1:18 PM: And we’re underway with Buck Davidson and Sorocaima, an 11-year-old Thoroughbred gelding who made his 5* debut with Buck at Kentucky this spring. First out was initially supposed to be Ariel Grald and Forest Gump 124, but they’ve withdrawn. Also withdrawn ahead of XC are Hannah Sue Hollberg and Lukeswell along with Daisy Trayford and Ermintrude.

The actions kicks off at 1:15 PM and in the meantime, let’s review the course:

The cross country track is designed by David O’Connor and takes the 4*-S combinations over a total of 3740 meters with 32 jumping efforts set at 22 numbered questions. The optimum time is 6 minutes, 34 seconds. Well be interested to see if anyone guns for catching the optimum time today over Virginia’s rolling hills especially, as seems to be the case everywhere in the country, over some hard ground. You can view the course below or, if the embedded post does not show up, here. What a bittersweet photo this is! All of these portables once dotted the grounds of Groton House Farm which, to the grief of the entire Area, announced earlier this year that they would no longer hold a recognized horse trial. While these fences now leave the hallowed grounds of Hamilton, Massachusetts they’ll be put to good use at another historic Area I venue, Huntington Farm of South Strafford, Vermont which is currently experiencing a reawakening of sorts under its young new owner, who aims to continue the farm’s legacy.

There are surely more details on their way, but one of the most important action items voted upon at the USEA Board of Governors meeting earlier this week was the approval of $100,000  in seed money for a new safety fund administered by the USEA Foundation. All we know for now is that the funds will be used to aid in safety measures, including frangible technology grants. We’ll be interested to see what’s in store!

Here’a a quick, terrifying reminder to A) have an emergency plan, and B) have amazing neighbors. The hay barn at Sharon White’s Last Frontier Farm was struck by lightning and caught fire earlier this week while she was away teaching, but the farm staff and local neighbors jumped into action quickly. Fortunately, the hay barn was situated away from other buildings on the property in case of just such a situation and the local emergency responders were able to contain the fire’s damage to the hay barn and hay supply itself. While that’s certainly a big loss, we’re so thankful to hear that no humans or animals were injured.

Monday Video: Insanity on the Lunge Line

You know we love a little insanity in the middle here at Eventing Nation. It’s evident in our love for our own sport of eventing, but every now and then we have to step back and gaze in wonder at some of the other equestrian sports out there.

We don’t talk about vaulting all that much since it doesn’t overlap with any of the phases of eventing (could you imagine if it did, though?!) but I’ve just come across the videos of the winning individual medalists’ routines from the FEI Vaulting World Championships Herning 2022 and it’s reminded me that yes in fact, there’s quite a bit of insanity in the middle out there in the other equestrian sports as well (should we call it insanity on the lunge line in this case, actually?) And these are just the individual routines — they stick multiple people up there on the horse’s back and all flip around at once in the team competitions!

Anyway, mad respect goes to every athlete out there competing at the World Championships no matter the discipline and congratulations to Manon Moutinho (riding Saitiri — are they riding? Or is it called something else in this case?) and Lambert Leclezio (on Estado IFCE), both of France for taking home gold medals in the individual competition. Enjoy their routines!

Well, well that’s another weekend of U.S. evening in the books! It was a big weekend too, with eight recognized horse trials happening from coast to coast.

We’ve spotted a few multi-divisions winners: Liz Halliday-Sharp took two wins at Cobblestone Farms, Tamie Smith clinched three at Galway Downs, and Alexandra Green earned a pair of Beginner Novice blues at River Glen. We’re also delighted to see our friend Dan Kreitl out and about with Carmango in their first start since the Lexington CCI4*-S.

Tim Price Crowned British Open Champion; Caroline Martin Earns Two Festival Wins

After two years of coronavirus pandemic-induced hiatus, the Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing was welcomed back to Gatcombe Park this weekend.

While the title of British Open Champion did change hands today (2019 winners Jonelle Price and Classic Möet were considered the defending champions) it stays in the family as Tim Price and Vitali, his Tokyo Olympic mount owned by the rider alongside Joe and Alex Giannamore, claimed the top spot in the Magic Millions British Open on a score of 30.0, tacking only time penalties onto their dressage score.

“I was really happy with him,” Tim told EN. “Just to string the three phases together is what I’m trying to achieve with him.”

While a clear and fast round across the country over the tricky terrain of Gatcombe Park is certainly a highlight, Tim was most pleased with the gelding’s show jumping round this weekend. While the 12-year old Holsteiner (Contender — Noble Lady I, by Heraldik) shows plenty of scope and talent, his spookiness occasionally gets the better of him and has cost the pair some top placings over the past few years, including potential medals at Tokyo and a potential second place finish at Luhmühlen CCI5* this spring.

“He’s got this weird brain where sometimes, it’s not even just lack of concentration, he concentrates on the wrong things and it takes it away from the job right in front of him. And that’s happened to me at the Olympics and happened to me at Luhmühlen, so it’s actually been more of a mental challenge,” Tim reflected.

“Today he jumped the first fence beautifully and straightaway I was awash with confidence. It’s a different approach when you feel that good feeling, you can get on with riding a nice round and it’s something that I’m super happy with today. This is something I can put in my back pocket for Burghley, really.”

As the top Brit in the Magic Millions British Open, second place overall finisher with a score of 32.1 Oliver Townend and Dreamliner earn the British National Champion title — a title Oliver has now held for a third time. He and Dreamliner, a 12-year-old homebred (Jumbo — Doff Gudanov, by Baryshnikov) of owners Mark and Angela Chamberlayne, also earn the honor of bringing home the only double clear round across country in the class.

The top five of the British Open is rounded out by:

  • Pippa Funnell and Billy Walk On, who led the division heading into cross country but picked up 8.4 time penalties to ultimately finish in 3rd place with a final score of 32.8.
  • Oliver Townend and Lukas in 4th place on a score of 36.7.
  • and in 5th place, 2019 British Open Champions Jonelle Price and Classic Möet, who delivered the second fastest time across country today and end their weekend on a 37.4.

Caroline Martin Makes Her Mark on British Eventing

Two new classes were added to the Festival of British Eventing schedule this year, Open Intermediate and Open Novice, and the U.S.’s own Caroline Martin nabbed wins in a section of each of them, despite feeling like a fish out of water as the only American competitor and never before seeing courses with terrain quite like that of Gatcombe Park. Fortunately for Caroline however, she has an exceptional mentor in her corner: none other than Pippa Funnell, with whom she’s been basing at The Billy Stud since June as a recipient of the 2021 Wilton Fair Grant.

“When I walked around the course, I didn’t know if I could do it to be honest. There’s nothing like it in America, we just don’t ride on terrain like that and it was extremely difficult,” Caroline said, “but Pippa was really good to explain that since I have good six- and seven-year-olds, it’s not about winning here — so on my six-year-olds I stopped my clock halfway around the course and I was just going to ride off of feel because it’s more important to think about their future rather than winning horse trials.”

Even so, six-year-old Galwaybay Redfield HSH Conner (owned Caroline, her mother Sherrie, and the McElduff family) came out on top in the thirty competitor-strong Bredon School Open Novice Section G with the only sub-30 score in this division. “Conner” is so far two-for-two overseas, having also won a Novice (U.S. Preliminary level equivalent) section in his first outing on British soil at Aston le Walls a few weeks ago.

King’s Especiale, owned by the Redfield King’s HX Group, took top honors in another large division, the BiowaveGO Open Intermediate Section D, after adding just cross country time to his dressage score to finish on a mark of 33.3. But that’s not all: Caroline also earned a third place finish in the BiowaveGO Open Intermediate Section C (which was won by Tim Price and Gurtera Jimmy Clover) aboard Galwaybay Blake. Owned by Mollie Hoff along with Caroline and Sherrie, “Blake” currently leads the pack of qualified contenders for the Holekamp/Turner YEH Lion d’Angers Grant, so there’s a good chance we could see him in France this fall.

Caroline’s top mount, Islandwood Captain Jack also made an appearance in the Magic Millions British Open, contesting the dressage and showjumping phases for some practice in a big atmosphere before a planned withdrawal ahead of cross country.

Through all the successes, Caroline is quick to chalk it all up to the great mentorship of Pippa, who she says has been like a mother duck taking her under her wing and giving her the mentorship and education of a lifetime: “She is the best human ever and she’s so patient.”

“She’s amazing and she’s turning into the best mentor I could ever, ever, ever imagine,” gushed Caroline. “We’ve been having such a great time and she’s stripped me back to basics and just riding properly – that’s the important stuff.”

But it’s not just the revisiting of riding foundations through which Pippa has supported Caroline: it’s the small and large gestures of guidance — from feeling the horses’ legs and asking how they ate, to walking courses at dusk, to reminding Caroline to curtsey at the prize giving hosted by Princess Anne — that all add up.

“She’s so invested and she’s there every step of the way. When you add it all up together that’s why I’m successful — all these little things. It’s so cool to have someone of her caliber take an interest in me and she’s turning into just a great friend.”

And it appears that Pippa seems to be growing fond of Caroline as well.

Today we’re mourning the loss of Kilrodan Abbott, who passed away yesterday at the age of 23. “Eddie” was the long-time partner of Peter Barry, and the pair represented Canada at the 2012 London Olympics and 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France.

Bred in Ireland by John Craig and then imported to Quebec in 2008, Eddie went on to start in 20 four-star and 5 five-star competitions over six years in addition to his team appearances before being retired at his home event, Bromont, at the age of 17. Our deepest condolences go out to Peter and all those who loved Eddie.

Today is the day of one of my favorite live streams all year: it’s cross country day at the FEI European Championships for Ponies! I simply will never get over the gusto with which these pint-sized athletes ping themselves over fences with enviable boldness and the neatest little tucked knees.
