Monday Video: Back to Bicton with Piggy March

When it was initially realized that there would be no British five-star this year, as Badminton and Burghley were both canceled, riders rallied for a replacement event and Bicton Arena and Chedington Equestrian stepped up to the plate to hold the “pop-up” Chedington Bicton Park CCI5*.

Having a five-star to run this year — the first to take place on British soil since 2019 — meant a lot to riders like Piggy March, who had a horse that was in her prime when the pandemic began and was left with no events to run as age continues to creep up. We knew it would be exciting to see Piggy’s 2019 Badminton winner Vanir Kamira (a.k.a Tilly Bean!), owned by Trevor Dickens, out and about jumping the big ones again and they sure didn’t disappoint.

Piggy recaps their weekend in her latest vlog. Will we see this pair again at Badminton next spring? Time will tell.

If, like me, you unfortunately had to miss most of the Bicton five-star cross country yesterday never fear: you’ll be able to watch it on demand later with your purchase of a weekend pass on H&C. I definitely will find the time to go back and watch it, as it seems like a really fascinating study of cross country riding. After all, how often do you get to see veteran riders and five-star first timers alike tackle an entirely new course? A number of pairs said it was the toughest five-star terrain they’d ever tackled and one can see why just from the gifs that Sally captured during her live updates!

Monday Video: How a Snowman Can Help Improve Your Dressage

I know, I know … it still feels too early to be thinking about pumpkin spice, never mind snowmen, but it’s all in the name of better dressage! The snowman exercise is a favorite of dressage rider and YouTuber Amelia Newcomb for improving the canter, improving suppleness, waking up a lazy horse and relaxing a tense horse — basically, you name it and it’s a good exercise for it!

The snowman exercise has been a staple in Amelia’s training toolbox for years. In fact, the video above was uploaded in 2019 and just recently she posted a new video about the same exercise, but with variations on it for all levels. Don’t wait until winter to incorporating this exercise into your own dressage practice!

Monday Video: Phillip Dutton’s Next Generation

I post a lot about our 4* and 5* horses, but I haven't always shared as much here about our young horses and OTTBs at home. This is 3-year-old Undaunted Rags (by Union Rags), now owned by Kevin Keane. Undaunted Rags was trained by Graham Motion and last raced on July 19th, and we have had him for about 10 days now. In this video, I talk through our ride yesterday to show a bit of what I do with the younger horses. If there's interest in following along, I'll continue to share more of what we work on and Undaunted Rag's progress.

Posted by Phillip Dutton Eventing on Wednesday, August 18, 2021

With his win on Fernhill Singapore in the CCI4*-S at the MARS Great Meadow International yesterday, we’ve just seen what Phillip Dutton can do with a horse he’s produced from a four-year-old. It figures that he’s already got the next generation in his barn and under saddle, carefully bringing them along and looking towards the future with the trademark cautious optimism of any eventer.

One such horse recently arrived in his barn is Undaunted Rags, a three-year-old Thoroughbred gelding (Union Rags – Lookout Lady, by Smart Strike) who last raced just about one month ago and was trained by Graham Motion. Dr. Kevin Keane, Phillip’s veterinarian and fellow four-star competitor now owns the young horse. Graham, a noted Thoroughbred racehorse trainer local to the Fair Hill Maryland area, and Phillip have created a great racehorse to sporthorse pipeline with Phillip having trained several of Graham’s ex-racers up through the levels of eventing now, perhaps most notably Icabad Crane, who won one of the very first America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred competitions, and Sea of Clouds, who also just completed the 4* at GMI yesterday.

In the video above, Phillip talks through one of this first rides on this new baby OTTB. We’re looking forward to following their progress!

MARS Great Meadow International CCI4*-S Cross Country Live Updates

Phillip Dutton and Fernhill Singapore. Photo by Sally Spickard.

Welcome, welcome to another EN live update thread! This time we’re coming at you from the MARS Great Meadow International. Well, sort of … technically I’m coming at you from my house north of Boston where we’re on the outskirts of a rare New England hurricane, but all the better to pretend that I’m in The Plains, Virginia watching some CCI4*-S cross country action.

Sally Spickard, however, IS at he event in the flesh this weekend and has put together some excellent reports recapping the other divisions and phases. So before the 4* starts, catch up with what you may have missed yesterday here.

Riders will be tacking a David O’Connor-designed course today and you can get a feel for it in this course preview. Sally also put together a really fun fence-by-fence course walk on the EN Instagram yesterday featuring some insight from Sharon White. You can find that here.

Because of the heat, the course has since been shortened by 400 meters from 3960 to 3560 and the new optimum time is now 6 minutes 14 second. Fence 4AB, the Open Oxer to Triple Brush, is now a single jumping effort and the final fence has been moved up in the course.

This week’s coverage of MARS Great Meadow International is brought to you by Kentucky Performance Products.

2:37 PM: Here are your top ten in the CCI4*-S! Sally will be along later with a full report from the day’s action. Thanks for following along and be sure to check back in!

2:30 PM: Phillip Dutton and Fernhill Signapore are our CCI4*-S winners! They’re home with just 3.2 time penalties for a final score of 31.2. Phil’s airbag went off somewhere, possibly getting triggered after a bit of a stumble on landing from 19A, but no matter when you’ve just won the whole shebang anyway.

2:28 PM: HOLY CRAP. Marilyn and RF Scandalous splash down and both fall into the water at 11A. That’s hugely unexpected and a major bummer, but for Phillip it means it’s his game to lose as he approaches the finish line.

2:27 PM: Will and Chin Tonic HS finish with 7.2 time, which will drop them down to 4th for the moment.

2:26 PM: Our leaders and last pair on course, Marilyn Litte and RF Scandalous are out of the box now!

2:25: PM: Beautiful ride for Will and Chin Tonic HS through 19AB the MARS Sustainability Bay. Phillip and Fernhill Singapore have been out on course for a bit now and they’re already through the second water. Everyone is speeding up here in the final rides, I can’t keep up!

2:23 PM: Ah, barely missed it! Lauren and Bug come home 2 seconds over time. They’ll squeeze into second place currently on a 32.5 behind Off The Record.

Lauren Nicholson and Vermiculus. Photo by Sally Spickard.

2:21 PM: Go little Bug, go! Lauren seems to be ahead of the clock as gallop on their way to the second water.

2:20 PM: Kevin celebrates with a fist pump as he and Sportsfield Candy make it through 19Ab clear! They’re having a fab round and are almost home. Will Coleman and Chin Tonic HS are just out on course now.

2:17 PM: Kevin isn’t wasting any time and he’s clear through the coffin. Lauren Nicholson and Vermiculus, who sit in 5th on a score of 31.7, are now on course and they’re also not wasting any time, frankly. Little “Bug” pings through 9ABC superbly.

2:14 PM: Aw dang!! Kimmy and Monaco have a stop at the ditch element of the coffin. Ugh ugh ugh, major bummer. Boyd and Penhill Celtic have now finished and Kevin Keane and Sportsfield Candy are now on course.

2:13 PM: Kimmy and Monaco are clear through 11 ABC and Boyd is clear through 19AB.

2:11 PM: Weeee! Kimmy Cecere and Landmark’s Monaco are fresh out on course and they are flying. Nobody made the time here last year, but Kimmy was the closest. It’ll be fun to see what they do this year!

2:10 PM: Lillian and LCC Barnaby cruise through the 19AB and Boyd and Penhill Celtic are out on course now and having a steady ride.

2:08 PM: Oh shoot! We didn’t quite see it, but it looks like Ariel and Simon had a glance off at that danged 19B. That’s a bit uncharacteristic, but better here than at Aachen at least! What’s that saying about dress rehearsals and performances?

2:07 PM: Just to recap here as we get into the final combinations, our clubhouse leaders right now are Will Coleman and Off The Record on score of 32.0. He’s followed by the only two double clears of the days so far: Lauren Nicholson and Landmark’s Monte Carlo on 34.5, followed by Ema Klugman and Bendigo on 39.0.

2:05 PM: Holly and Candy King are nicely through 19AB and Lillian Heard and longtime partner LLC Barnaby are fresh out on course now. Ariel is clear through the coffin at 12ABC, giving Simon a nice easy ride.

Holly Jacks-Smither and Candy King.

2:03 PM: Aw dang! Cosby Green and Highly Suspicious couldn’t quite lock onto that notorious 19B quick enough and they have a drive by. Another Aachen-bound pair, Ariel Grald and Leamore Master Plan a.k.a. Simon, are now on course too and that means we’ve reached the top ten riders, so we’re in the home stretch of the division now!

2:00 PM: Canada’s Holy Jacks-Smither and Candy King are out on course now.

1:59 PM: We just got word that Sharon White has withdrawn Claus 63, so we will not see them on XC. Cosby Green is clear over fence 17 and is looking full of run still.

1:58 PM: Arielle and Dutch Times are kicking on home and they finish with 13.2 time.

1:57 PM: Highly Suspicious seems a little suspicious of the corners at 9ABC, but Cosby gets him to pop through them clear! She’s kicking on and is through 11ABC clear now too.

1:54 PM: Phillip gives Sea of Clouds a textbook ride though the MARS Sustainability Bay and are home with 6.8 time. Arielle is through the coffin complex. Cosby Green and Highly Suspicious are on course now.

1:51 PM: Night Quality locks onto that 19B element at the last second and they get over it clear! Isabelle and Night Quality cross the finish line with 15 time penalties as Arielle Aharoni and Dutch times leave the start box.

1:49 PM: Philip Dutton and the OTTB Sea of Clouds are now on course and galloping nicely along to Fence 7.

1:48 PM: Isabelle has a beautiful ride through 9ABC. They’re clear now through 11ABC as well as they step on the gas.

1:45 PM: Darn. Early Review C stops at 19A. Sidney gets the horse’s feet wet before they decide to call it a day. Isabelle Bosley and Night Quality are now on course as well.

1:43 PM: Ah dang, Early Review C kind of slides into the A element of the coffin at fence 12 and picks up a stop. And, oh no! We just got one look at Colleen Rutledge and Confidence Game and it looks like they’re having a show issue and Colleen is pulling him up. Caitlin Silliman has finished with some time, but otherwise clear.

1:42 PM: We’ve got Caitlin Silliman and Ally KGO as well as Sidney Solomon and Early Review C both on course now.

1:41 PM: OK, we’ve got a lot to catch up on here while I was trying to stick some photos in below. Amanda Beale Clement and Carlson 119 are home clear after a hairy moment at the B skinny at the MARS Sustainability Bay where it looked like Carlson 119 locked onto the fence before Amanda did and said HANG ON MOM. They scraped their breastplate off the girth attachment, but make it out clear! Elizabeth Bortuzzo and Belongs to Teufer were on course and pick up a runout at the C element of 9ABC. Then unfortunately they were coming in a little too hot to 11A and Teufer slipped a little and sat down on the takeoff side of the fence and Elizabeth popped off. They’ll be back another day!

1:30 PM: If you don’t recognize that rider in the polka dots, that’s Hannah Sue Burnett in some new colors! She and Captiol HIM are on course clear through the coffin. Boyd gets Wabanaki through the MARS Sustainability Bay clear.

Lauren Nicolson and Landmark’s Monte Carlo. Photo by Sally Spickard.

1:28 PM: Boyd is back with his second ride, Wabanaki. Lauren and Landmark’s Monte Carlo were flying and they are our second pair home double clear! Will and Timmy picked up just 3.6 time, but they stay ahead of Lauren on the leaderboard.

1:24 PM: Will steadies Timmy after the drop into 19AB, the MARS Sustainability Bay, makes the horse wait for it, and easily flies over the skinny B element. Meghan is home with 17.2 time.

Will Coleman and Off The Record. Photo by Sally Spickard.

1:22 PM: Woo! Palm Crescent takes little peck on landing in the drop into the MARS Sustainability Bay but Meghan stays in the tack and get over the B element too. Fabulous riding! Lauren Nicolson and Landmark’s Monte Carlo are now on course too and coming up to 9ABC.

1:19 PM: Nations Cup-bound pair Will Coleman and Off the Record a.k.a. Timmy are now out of start box. Meghan and Palm Crescent are clear though the coffin at 12ABC.

1:16 PM: After a little gap without anyone on course, Meghan O’Donaghue and Palm Crescent are out of the start box now!

1:13 PM: Aw geez, Nicole Aden and Truckee Bash have trouble at the first of the double brush corners, the BC elements, of fence 9. They opt to retire after two stops.

1:11 PM: CRAP. Obos Darkos gets too underneath one of the table fences, chips it, and pops Jill out fo the tack on landing leaving her on the ground. Both Jill and her horse are totally fine, but Jill is bummed! Ugh, we’re bummed for you too, Jill!

1:10 PM: Nicole Aden and Truckee Bash are on course now.

1:08 PM: Jenny Caras and Trendy Fernhill have been on course for a while now, in fact, they’re already at fence 19AB MARS Sustainability Bay and, WOHOO, Jenny rides it beautifully and get over the B element nicely. We’ve also got Jill Thomas and Obos Darkos on course now and they look clear through the coffin complex.

1:06 PM: Geez, another one! Colleen and C Me Fly miss the skinny at the MARS Sustainability Bay too. The horse just didn’t lock onto it. Colleen has put her hand up after the next combination, 21AB, and opt to retire there.

1:02 PM: That B element skinny in the MARS Sustainability Bay, fence 19AB, is catching out the young horses! Lillian and Dassett Olympus have a flyby there too. Commentators Lynn Symansky and Karen O’Connor are thinking riders need to take a wider line to the B element with their young horses.

1:01 PM: We can hear Colleen give her mare a big “Good girl!” shout after they tackle 6AB. We love to hear it!

1:00 PM: Aw dang, Cooley Candyman jumps big into the water at the MARS Sustainability Bay and Buck couldn’t line him up for the skinny second element. Colleen Rutledge and C Me Fly are now on course as well.

12:55 PM: Emily is home with no jumping faults and 19.6 time penalties. Lillian Heard and the 8-year-old Dassett Olympus are on course now. Buck looks clear through the second water, fence 14.

12:53 PM: Buck Davidson and Cooley Candyman are on course now. Emily and Deal With It are clear through fence 18.

12:52 PM: Emily Beshear and Deal With It are on course and clear through the new coffin complex where Sharon had a stop earlier. And, oh dear, Sharon has had another stop now, this time at the jump into the final water at fence 19, the MARS Sustainability Bay. She puts her hand up and calls it a day. Major bummer, man.

12:50 PM: YOU GO EMA! She’s home clear and inside the time! I’m so bummed my Believe in Bendigo shirt is in the wash today.

Ema Klugman and Bendigo. Photo by Sally Spickard.

12:49 PM: Sharon White, who was so kind to join us for a course walk yesterday (check above for a link), and Cooley On Show are on course and were clear up to fence 12ABC, the new coffin complex, where they’ve had stop at the first element. “Louie” is just looking a little uncharacteristically unconfident today.

12:45 PM: Boyd and Fernhill Prezley have a drive-by at the skinny B element in the MARS Sustainability Bay. It’s this horses first 4*, so Boyd is making sure this is a nice educational round.

12:44 PM: Our gal Ema Klugman and Bendigo are on course and they are wasting no time! They’re clear through the first water.

12:42 PM: The cross country today will be run in reverse order of standing, but Boyd has three rides in the division so he’s acting as path finder with Fernhill Prezley who sits in 23rd.

12:39 PM: Our first rider in the CCI4* is out of the box and it’s Boyd Martin and Fernhill Prezley.

We all know it takes a village to get anywhere in this sport. Farriers are critical members of that village because after all, as the saying goes: no hoof, no horse. So it’s always wonderful to see our hardworking farriers recognized at a big event. John Hopwood, who shoes Belongs to Teufer for Elizabeth Bortuzzo, won the Paul Goodness Best Shod Foot Award at GMI this year. Congratulations!

Not only did Bodgie have a long-time association with one of the biggest events in the U.S., her father was a co-founder of the United States Pony Club! Give this lovely tribute a read.

Monday Video: Millbrook Memories by Marion de Vogel

The woman behind the lens meets the chinchilla behind the … chaos? Photo by Abby Powell.

Take me back to Millbrook! We’re already a week out from this destination event and we’re already pining to go back. The Millbrook Horse Trials are a favorite amongst longtime competitors and new visitors alike. Between the scenic New York countryside and the traditional three-phase format, what’s not to love?

Each year, local videographer and member of the equestrian community Marion de Vogel donates her talents to the Millbrook Horse Trials and captures the essence of the event on each of the four days of competition. We loved getting to meet Marion this year, and we think she enjoyed meeting us (particularly Chinch) too!

Take a look back at the final day of competition in the first video above. And if you missed any of the previous videos, which were embedded into our daily Millbrook coverage, just scroll down to here to catch up:

Who Jumped It Best? Millbrook Intermediate Show Jumping Edition

What a happy coincidence it is when a sponsor’s fence ends up being the perfect one to shoot for a Who Jumped It Best? That was the case for the Nutrena Open Intermediate divisions at the Millbrook Horse Trials. Nutrena’s fence was placed on a tight left turn off the rail and it was at the perfect angle and in the perfect light to shoot it for our favorite fun competition.

You be the judge! Scroll down and cast your vote in the poll at the bottom of this post for the combination who you think presents the best overall picture.

The folks of Ellesmere, Great Britain sure have an interesting way of celebrating their local Olympians! A group called the Ellesmere Yarn bombers have created post box toppers celebrating their Olympic heros, including Oliver Townend and Ballaghmor Class (a.k.a Thomas), who’s Gadlas Farm just outside town.

This isn’t the first time that fiber art has adorned the town of Ellesmere. They’re a bit famous for their random acts of “yarn bombing” appearing every now and then on the main public streets. Think graffiti, but with knitted and crocheted creations!

I kind of think we should all maybe take a page out of young Otis Price’s book and make a mid-course walk float part of everyone’s regular course walking routine. It might be just the trick to some pre-cross country relaxation! Think of like one of those sensory deprivation tanks. Except without the sensory deprivation … and a lot more mud and all the toe jam from all those walking their lines sans wellies floating around.

Okay, on second thought maybe let’s not make the mid-course walk float a thing. You do you, Otis!

Who Jumped it Best? Millbrook Open Preliminary XC Edition

told you there would be more from Millbrook this week!

On Saturday after the Advanced cross country wrapped up and the organizers and volunteers were able to take a well-deserved lunch break, the Preliminary divisions for the Millbrook Horse Trials got underway for the afternoon. This fence, the Trevor Zoo Picnic Table (by the way, did you now there is a zoo literally next door to the horse trials? And they have a live stream of several animal enclosures, including their red panda. You’re welcome), was the thirteenth obstacle on course and rode fabulously for all the riders that passed by me.

There are a couple things I really enjoy about snapping photos for a Who Jumped it Best? For one, sometimes I can find a fence where I can sit down and that’s really nice after a morning of walking from fence to fence photographing the other divisions. In this case I was able to sit on the nearby Advanced table (which I’m always mind-blown about how wide it really is when I get near.) And secondly, since I’m sitting at the same fence for a number of riders I always end up chatting with the fence judges, who are always positively lovely. Hi guys!

Anyway, you know the drill — cast your vote in the poll at the bottom of this post for the combination who you think presents the best overall picture.

Fylicia Barr & Galloway Sunrise. Photo by Abby Powell.

Fylicia Barr and Galloway Sunrise — the game little mare that she bought off Craigslist for $500 when she was 13 years old — made the most of their trip up to Millbrook this weekend. They clinched a top ten result in the first competition back for “Sunny” after the pair made their five-star debut at the Kentucky Three-Day event this spring.

“The course was beautiful and it was such a well-run event!” Fylicia told us.

While they fought a bit on tension in the dressage on Friday, the next day they made light work of  Morgan Roswell’s cross country course and skipped around with ease in the fastest time of the day. For the record, the course was anything but a gimme. You can really get a feel for Millbrook’s undulating terrain through Fylicia’s helmet cam, and peep that bounce to the drop into the water near the end of the course!

In addition to competing Sunny in the Advanced and another horse, Kaballero, in the Open Training A division, Fylicia kept busy by also coaching five students in other divisions. Those students and friends could be heard cheering for her around the track and their footage of Fylicia’s ride on Sunny have also been spliced into the helmet cam video below.

Next up, Fylicia plans to contest the Advanced at AECs with Sunny and will aim for the inaugural Maryland Five Star this fall. Best of luck, Fylicia!

Holly Payne Caravella and CharmKing Capture Advanced Win at Millbrook

This week’s coverage is brought to you by Kentucky Performance Products. Collect your free stickers here

I’ve said it (more than) once and I’ll say it again: it could not have been a more beautiful weekend at Millbrook Horse Trials for the event’s 20th anniversary.

While there was a lot on everyone’s minds over the weekend, one overarching theme of the past few days has been how special an event this is for many of the competitors. In part, it’s the FEI-like feel of the event thanks to the traditional format in which show jumping comes as the third phase and the buzzing atmosphere of the sponsor tent-lined jump ring. Coming to Millbrook is often also chance to connect with friends and family. Many Area II and III-based pairs, who often have much closer events that they could go to instead, choose to make the hours and hours long trip to Millbrook to catch up with loved ones that live in the Northeast.

Holly Payne Caravella and CharmKing. Photo by Abby Powell.

Leading the field in the Advanced division wire-to-wire, Holly Payne Caravella and CharmKing claimed their second win in a row, having also won the Advanced at the Horse Park of New Jersey this June.

Holly told us yesterday after cross country that she wasn’t necessarily pushing to get the time, though the heavy and frequent rain that the area has recently experienced has allowed for faster rounds this year. Holly’s main focus for the cross country was to kick on and give “Charm” a positive ride.

“I was actually surprised at the end when I kind of looked at my watch and I went, ‘Wow, I’m actually like, on the time basically.’ So that was a pleasant surprise,” Holly told us yesterday. “I think he was very smooth. We just had to ride forward to make sure we were going to get the distances done.”

Holly Payne Caravella and CharmKing. Photo by Abby Powell.

The pair jumped one of nine double clear rounds over the Marc Donovan track to earn a wire-to-wire win in the Advanced division. Looking at his competition record, Charm has show jumped double clear in the vast majority of his rounds at the Advanced and Intermediate levels.

Being relatively new to the level, the 10-year-old Holsteiner owned by CharmKing LLC, has run several 4*-S with both Holly and Lillian Heard, who competed the gelding for her through Holly’s pregnancy. Holly and Charm’s next stop will be the American Eventing Championships (AEC)s to the contest the Advanced there and their season-end goal will be the 4*-L at Morven Park in October, which would be the first 4*-L for the horse.

Overnight second-placed pair Elizabeth Bortuzzo and Belongs To Tuefer sadly knocked four rails to drop them to a final placing of 12th. They have a lot to still be proud of though, especially with their fantastic cross country round yesterday and their finishing score still garners a qualifying ride at the level. Not too shabby for your first Advanced at all!

Buck Davidson and Erroll Gobey. Photo by Abby Powell.

And audible shout could be heard at the end of one of Buck Davidson‘s rounds: “GOOD JOB DADDY!” called his young daughter Audrey from the fence line. Buck had three rides in the division and jumped two double clears to move Erroll Gobey and Jak My Style up one placing each for second and third, respectively. Both “Gobey” and “Jak”, along with barn mate Carlevo, who was not at Millbrook this weekend, will ideally be pointed at the new Maryland Five Star this fall after a trip to the AECs as well.

Buck was able to clock fast and clear rounds on the cross country yesterday too, garnering just 2 time penalties with Gobey and coming in under the time with Jak. Like many, many others here this weekend Buck is also feeling the loss of cross country course designer Tremaine Cooper, rode with Buck’s father, Bruce Davidson, and competed through the Advanced level himself before turning to course design.

“We’ve known each other since we were kids and we both grew up at Chesterland. It’s just definitely different not seeing Tremaine here,” said Buck. “Tremaine was looking down. The footing was perfect and the ground was perfect. We never have high 70s, low 80 degree weather with no humidity. It’s amazing.”

Several of the folks who own horses for Buck, including long-time supporters Carl and Cassie Siegel and Kathleen Cuca, were able to be there this weekend to watch their horses and cheer Buck on.

“It’s really fun. That’s what it’s about: having owners that are friends and they get to their horses,” he said.

Kat Cuca and her own Jak My Style join Buck on Erroll Gobey for the victory gallop. Photo by Abby Powell.

Kat, who owns Jak, was actually able to do a little more  than cheer her horse on — Buck had her ride him for the prize giving ceremony. Kat also competed Jak in his first post-Kentucky outing: the Beginner Novice at Essex Horse Trails last month.

“He was a star — I got two rails though!” laughed Kat, who had previously ridden her horse in lessons with Buck and helps with the occasional trot set. “He was so amazing cross country. I stepped on the gas a little and then trotted the back half so I wouldn’t get speed penalties. And Buck trained me up so that I didn’t get completely terrified to do it.”

Kimmy Cecere & Landmark’s Monaco. Photo by Abby Powell.

Also jumping double clear to retain her score for a fourth place finish, was Kimmy Cecere with Ms. Jaqueline Mars’ homebred Landmark’s Monaco, a 14-year-old Irish Sport Horse. Kimmy was rightly please with their showing this weekend and they’re another pair that we’ll hopefully see at Morven Park this fall.

“He was so wonderful. The footing was awesome and it was such a good weekend,” she said.

Sydney Solomon and Early Review C. Photo by Abby Powell.

Sydney Solomon and Early Review C, a 12-year-old Hanoverian mare owned by herself and Laurie Cameron, round out the top five and jumped sixteen places in the standings after dressage, thanks to double clear rounds in both jumping phases. They’re not quite the winners of the biggest mover award, however. That goes to Fylicia Barr and Galloway Sunrise, who ultimately finish their weekend in 8th place. They moved up seventeen places after dressage and clocked the fastest round of the day on cross country yesterday.

While there’s so much more to say about this weekend at Millbrook and SO many more pictures to post (like, so many) that’s going to have to conclude this report for the time being — this reporter still has to drive the rest of the way home and be at least semi-functional for a regular day job tomorrow. Thank you to all who make Millbrook such an exceptional event to attend. Stay tuned for more to come.
