Red on the right, white on the left and insanity in the middle rings true for today’s video. While eventers can’t get style points for jumping efforts, we think Sam Griffiths deserves a 2018 stickability nomination at the very least! Sue Brendish’s Paulank Kings River  was a tad too eager to take on the Irish Bank on the CCI3* course at Millstreet International Horse Trials, but the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse knew his job and was happy to keep at the red and white flags—with or without a jockey.

Sam shared the video on his Facebook page saying, “Not exactly how I planned it. But King is such an honest horse.” Honest, indeed! The pair went on to finish fourth in the division.

We’ve also got to hand it to Liz Halliday-Sharp who also stuck a slippery moment after the Irish Bank with Fernhill By Night:

There something special about a horse show morning. Ignoring your 4:00 a.m. alarm clock, the feeling of getting that last minute course walk in joined by a hopeful sunrise will set you right on course. I think Lars Blackmore, who shot the photo above, said it best: “Though there isn’t a hoof in sight, this shot of a competitor counting strides at sunrise sums up much of the inherent beauty of the sport.” Go eventing.

Tom Carlile Wins Millstreet CICO3*, Liz Halliday-Sharp 5th

Tom Carlile and Upsilon mastered all three phases of our sport this weekend: record-setting dressage, bold cross country and near perfection in today’s show jumping wrapped up their wire-to-wire win of the CICO3* at Millstreet International Horse Trials.

The 10-year-old Anglo-Arabian stallion (Canturo X O’Vive, by Fusain du Defey) carried an eight-point lead into the ring, but he didn’t need it. He left all the poles in their cups to finish on 17.3—beating a own personal best finishing result at this level by over seven points.

Tom and Upsilon’s performance today also secured a French victory in this FEI Nations Cup, and extended dominance in the overall series standings as they’ve now won four of the six legs.

Ros Canter piloted her own Zenshera to a double clear round and a second place finish. The 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood (Guidam x Telvera, by Matterhorn) finishes on 26-flat as an individual representative of Great Britain.

Alex Bragg was equally bang on this weekend having one time penalty on both rides for third and fourth place aboard Barrichello and Shannondale Percy, respectively.

His Nations Cup ride Barrichello, a 9-year-old Ango European gelding (Balou du Rouet x Madon’s Even Wiser, by Matinee du Madon VII) owned by Caroline & Jane March, finished on 29.9, and stablemate Shannondale Percy, an 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Shannondale Sarco St. Ghyvan x Shannondale Maria, Lux Z) owned by Sara Hughes, closes the weekend on a final result of 30.

Liz Halliday-Sharp is our highest-placed American in fifth place with Fernhill By Night. “Blackie,” a 15-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Radolin X Argentina XII, by Argentinus) owned by Deborah Halliday, just tapped an oxer to for one down and a three-phase score of 33.9.

“Blackie was good. It’s been a long time since he’s jumped on the last day—he probably hasn’t done a CCI in three years, so it’s been a while for him to run hard the day before,” Liz said. “He just had one unfortunate rail. He just rubbed it behind, but he did jump well. He was a bit stiff from the day before, but he tried hard and I was pleased he finished fifth.”

Liz’s Nations Cup entry, Deniro Z, a 10-year-old KWPN (Zapatero VDL X Zonne-Trend, by French Buffet xx) owned by the Denrio Syndicate, got a wild look in his eye coming into the ring, and Liz had to work hard to keep the focus. Ultimately, he had three down to finish 18th on 41.9 points.

“We didn’t have the best round today. He really wasn’t himself. He jumped amazing in the warmup—I couldn’t get him to even breathe on a poll. I had a really good chance at a clear. I haven’t had him out to jump a big track since Luhmühlen. I think that was a mistake on my part because he came out spooking at the tent, and he just wasn’t really with me,” she said.

“He’s gotten so strong now, he’s a real proper big man now, and he wasn’t really with me today. I didn’t have much in the way of controls. He wasn’t his usual self, so we’ll go home and reassess bitting and do some show jumping to get his head back in the game because he’s an exceptional horse and an exceptional jumper, so we just have to go figure out what went wrong.”

Liz’s two-star ride Cooley Quicksilver, who is owned by “The Monster Partnership” of Rob Desino, Chris Desino, Renee Lane and Debby Halliday, produced an impressive fourth place finish in the CIC2* class with just 2.4 time penalties added. One to watch for the future for sure!

Hallie Coon and Celien, an 11-year-old KWPN mare (Tenerife VDL X R Quicksilver, by Hamlet) owned by Hallie and Helen Coon, finished 48th in the standings after an unfortunate second look at the Irish Bank on yesterday’s cross country course. They knocked two rails today for a finishing result of 73.9.

“The two rails were unfortunate but I think she just needs to get a bit stronger,” Hallie said. “The whole weekend was an educational experience and it was incredibly helpful to start working with Erik (Duvander) and learning his philosophies moving forward from here. With all that said and done I’m really looking forward to the fall season and Pau.”

Millstreet’s Nations Cup competition exercised the new Olympic format of three-member teams this weekend, and the French rose to the challenge to win on 114 points. Great Britain dominated the leaderboard with seven riders in the top ten, and their team was second with 123.9 points. Ireland had two teams that both finished third and fourth, and down one rider after Buck Davidson and Carlevo’s withdraw yesterday, the United States finished fifth.

“It was really good to test the new [Olympic] format here at this event. We had all sorts of different versions of possible questions for future competition and the value of running through that and testing it here has been immensely good,”U.S. Eventing Technical Advisor and Chef d’Equipe Erik Duvander said.

“Many people agree that cutting down to three combinations in each team can be okay, however, the rules and thinking around the substitutes do seem to make the sport more complicated and possibly difficult to understand. We had several scenarios over the weekend that proved that. The general feeling is there needs to be more thinking and trial runs if they are going to get this right.”

EN also can confirm that Carlevo was withdrawn from the competition due to knocking himself. From Erik Duvander: “The horse had a bit of bruising. After dressage, the team vet evaluated him and it was decided that for this weekend, it was the best scenario not to run [Carlevo], as he is a future prospect for team competition and a very talented horse. It’s a minor injury, but you also want to be careful.”

Virginia Horse Trials to Host 2018 USEF One-Star National Championships

US Equestrian has named Virginia Horse Trials as the host venue for the 2018 USEF One-Star Eventing National Championships. Held at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Ky. the championships will take place during the Virginia CCI/CIC and H.T. November 1-4.

Nestled among the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia Horse Trials has become a destination event for many riders, and Event Organizer Andy Bowles has spent the last three years stacking on the amenities for riders.

“It’s an honor for us to host the One-Star Championship and we are excited for the opportunity,” Andy said. “We’ve spent the last few years working very hard to continue developing this wonderful venue into a place where eventers at all levels can look forward to good ground, challenging courses and excellent facilities.”

Competitors can look forward to lower than average FEI entry fees (CIC2*/CCI* at $375, CCI2* at $475), VHT swag, prize money for top finishers and a challenging cross country course designed by John Michael Durr. The championships courses will run similarly to the traditional CCI* class, but will include up to four or five more difficult questions.

In addition to the CCI* championship, VHT will also welcome Starter through Intermediate levels, including the new Modified level. The venue is also calling all college students and alumni for an Intercollegiate Team Challenge! Scramble teams and teams across multiple levels may be formed. Today might be National Dog Day, but yesterday was Townend’s day! He had horses in first, second, third and sixth after dressage in the CIC3* at Blair Castle, and withdrew those heavy-hitters. Much to the dismay of those watching (and Oliver himself) he still managed to win it with his ninth-placed ride. The man is on fire. Catch up with Tilly’s report here to read all about it.

Tom Carlile is Tops in Millstreet CICO3*, Liz Halliday-Sharp with Two in Top Ten

Tom Carlile and Upsilon made waves yesterday with their record-breaking dressage score of 16.8 at the Millstreet International Horse Trials in Ireland, and they’ve built on that success today with a smashing cross country round. Picking up just 0.8 time penalties in the CICO3*, they’ve got two poles in hand heading into the final phase.

Tom and the 10-year-old Anglo-Arabian stallion (Canturo X O’Vive, by Fusain du Defey) lead the way for the French team who are currently second in the FEI Nations Cup. France is fighting for a series victory as they’ve already won three Nations Cup titles this year.

Buck Davidson and Carlevo, an 11-year-old Holsteiner (Caresino X Ramatuelle, by Levernois) owned by Carlevo LLC, were standing proudly for the U.S. team in second place after dressage, but withdrew before the start of cross country.

Buck’s absence left the door wide open for Ros Canter and her own Zenshera who waltzed through easily with 2 time penalties added. Ros and the 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood (Guidam x Telvera, by Matterhorn), who are representing Great Britain as individuals, sit on a score of 26.

Great Britain’s Alex Bragg was one of only three riders to come inside the time, and he did it twice to take hold of both third and fourth place at the conclusion of cross country with Barrichello and Shannondale Percy, respectively.

Barrichello, a 9-year-old Ango European gelding (Balou du Rouet x Madon’s Even Wiser, by Matinee du Madon VII) owned by Caroline & Jane March, is in third on a 28.9, and Shannondale Percy, an 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Shannondale Sarco St. Ghyvan x Shannondale Maria, Lux Z) owned by Sara Hughes is fourth on 29 points.

Liz Halliday-Sharp piloted both her rides cleanly around the CICO3* to give the stars and stripes two top ten appearances in Fernhill By Night and Deniro Z who share an identical score of 29.9.

“Niro,” a 10-year-old KWPN (Zapatero VDL X Zonne-Trend, by French Buffet xx), edges just ahead into fifth as the best-placed of the U.S. Nations Cup team after having only 1.6 time penalties. His stablemate “Blackie,” a 15-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Radolin X Argentina XII, by Argentinus) owned by Deborah Halliday, follows just behind with 4 time penalties.

Liz also finished 4th out of 70 starters in the CIC2* with Cooley Quicksilver, who is owned by “The Monster Partnership” of Rob Desino, Chris Desino, Renee Lane and Debby Halliday, on a score of 29.2.

“Both of them were amazing and total class the whole way. I couldn’t have asked for more,” Liz said. “I’m a bit annoyed with myself for not making the time with Deniro, but I really tried. You had to really fight for it. I felt like I was just going at the time on both of them. You never had a time to get comfortable; you had to just keep going.”

Our third U.S. rider Hallie Coon was first out of the start this morning with her and Helen Coon’s Celien. The 11-year-old KWPN mare (Tenerife VDL X R Quicksilver, by Hamlet) was unsure about stepping off the Irish Bank, and the pair picked up an unfortunate 20 penalties early in the course.

“It was a bit unfortunate because she came out guns blazing. These American horses have never seen the dreaded Irish Bank before, so she jumped up on it and she just got really surprised. I could see the wheels turning and she was thinking on what to do. It felt like she went a bit right and left and then popped down after assessing, but looking at the video it’s fairly obvious that I deserved the 20 I got,” Hallie said.

“It’s one of those funny things that if I had the chance to do it again, I’d do it exactly the same way. It’s a learning curve for both her and I. Now that she’s seen that, she’s seen about everything.”

Aside from the blip, Hallie was pleased with the mare, who has spent most of the summer overseas, and remains hopeful for their CCI4* debut this fall at Pau. “She cracked around. She was so good. She gives me everything she’s got every time out, and I was thrilled with how she felt. I think it was a really good prep run for the fall,” she said.

The FEI Eventing Nations Cup at Millstreet is the second team competition to test the new Olympic format of three-member teams. Having a rider withdraw adds an automatic 200 points, which dropped the U.S. to fourth. Great Britain took over the lead followed by the French in second, and one of Ireland’s two teams in third.

BGS Country Dreams Dies on CICO3* Cross Country at Millstreet

We are devastated to report that BGS Country Dreams died today during the CICO3* cross country at the Millstreet International Horse Trials in Co Cork, Ireland. Ridden and owned by Patrick Martin Byrne, the 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Power Blade x Emmas Courage), fell at fence 22, The Gypsy Wagon. The fall was not rotational, and the fence caused no other faults in the division.

Patrick was uninjured in the fall, and event organizers commented that BGS Country Dreams will be taken for a post mortem examination at the Irish Equine Centre. The pair were riding on one of Ireland’s two Nations Cup teams.

Patrick had ridden the horse from the 100cm level through multiple two-star completions. This event was the horse’s CIC3* debut.

The EN team extends our deepest condolences to Patrick and all those who knew this special horse.

EN would like to wish a warm congratulations to U.S. eventer Nicolette Merle-Smith and Joel Scholz who married at the 2018 Mongol Derby finish camp. The pair completed the Mongol Derby in eight days, and their engagement was clearly no worse for the wear after a 1,000 kilometer trek across the steppe, traversing mountains and flooded rivers on 28 semi-feral ponies. Their family greeted them to celebrate at the finish. Having survived the Derby together, a lifetime of matrimony should be a piece of cake! A stateside wedding is in the works for October — visit their Facebook page Married to the Mongol Derby.

A weight requirement of 165 lbs. had to be met for all competitors, and that meant those on the lighter side had to carry extra weight. Hot on Horse Nation: Dressage Apocalypse

Attwood Wednesday Words of Wisdom:

There are many compelling reasons why Attwood only uses premium raw materials in its footing formulas.  If you love to cook or bake, this will all make perfect sense to you. But if you are kind of hack in the kitchen, just follow along.

All of our raw materials are accompanied with a SDS (Safety Data Sheet). This important information provides the makeup of material components, safe use, and safety of handling and storage for a particular material or product. So we know exactly what we are working with.

Knowing that our ingredients are consistent means we can produce consistent footing every time. By comparison, if you were baking bread, you wouldn’t throw in any old flour from the back of the cupboard into the mix and expect a great result? Of course not.

But what of recycled products such as carpet scraps and ground up tennis shoes? The real concern with adding recycled products into your footing is that you have no idea what’s really in there. And there is the concern of chemicals leaching out into paddocks and waterways. As for rubber, not only does it have a terrible odor, it breaks down easily creating a dusty and unhealthy environment for all.

It’s difficult to know the long-term effects recycled additives will have on your horse, you and the environment… while an Attwood footing will be safe and consistent ride after ride.

There’s a lot of competition on the table in addition to the Millstreet Nations Cup, including the Event Rider Masters Series Finale at Blair Castle. The 2018 season has be exciting from the very start, and the overall title is still very much up for grabs. The Mongol Derby is the longest and roughest horse race on the planet. Riders traipse across the Mongolian steppe attending 25 checkpoints aboard semi-feral ponies—Genghis Khan style. Our own editor Leslie Wylie took on the Mongol Derby last year and lived to tell the tale (Don’t miss her series, Wylie v. The Mongol Derby here!).

This year 16 North Americans are contesting the race, including Practical Horseman editor Jocelyn Pierce and eventer Nicolette Merle-Smith in tandem with her fiancé Joel Scholz. There is no understating the difficulty of the race or the unpredictability of the ponies, and this year’s contest is no different. Weekend Results: Intermediate Riders Dominate From Coast to Coast

You guys were busy out there in Eventing Nation this weekend! Let’s recognize some impressive Intermediate and CIC* riders from GMHA, Fair Hill, Otter Creek and Woodside:

GMHA Festival of Eventing

The Green Mountain Horse Association hosted their popular Festival of Eventing this weekend in beautiful South Woodstock, VT.

In the CIC*, Holly Jacks-Smither enjoyed a wire-to-wire win with her own Finely Brewed, a 7-year-old Thoroughbred (Milwaukee Brew x Capture The Spirit, by Conquistador Cielo). The pair finished on their dressage score of 27.3. You can watch their show jumping round below thanks to David Frechette:

Abby Maude was second with her own Stonehaven’s Dream. The 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse 4.4 cross country time penalties to add for a final result of 37.8. Sharon White finished third aboard Highlife’s Je T’aime, a 10-year-old Oldenburg (Der Dollar x  Juenesse D’or, by Lavarino) owned by Madeline Hartsock on 36.4 points.

In the Intermediate division, congratulations are due to Anna Loschiavo and Rodney Oakes and Gina Giudici-Oakes’s Prince Renan who picked up the win on a score of 34.6. The 15-year-old Thoroughbred was fourth after dressage and went on to add no penalties over the jumping phases. Watch their show jumping round:

Colleen Loach came in second with Qorry Blue D’Argouges, a 14-year-old Selle Francias (Mr. Blue x Hardie du Bourg) owned by Peter Barry.  The pair had 9.2 time penalties included in their three-phase result of 43.8. Sharon White was again third in this group, this time with her own Fashionably Late, an 8-year-old Thoroughbred cross (Aaron’s Gold x Fashion Plate, by Aristos B), on a score of 46.8.

Fair Hill International

Fair Hill International had a bustling weekend with 17 horse trial divisions. Intermediate A was won by Lexi Scovil and her own Chico’s Man VDF Z, an 8-year-old Zangersheide (Chico’s Boy x  Chardonnay Z, by  Caretano Z). The pair was second on 31.2 after dressage, but a clear show jumping round put them into the lead, and a mere .8 time penalties on cross country confirmed the win.

Elizabeth Massa was second on a score of 35.8 with her own Theodore, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood (Unaniem x Marinus, by Faram). Dressage leaders Boyd Martin and Barry, a 9-year-old Thoroughbred owned by Boyd and Windurra USA, finished third with 39.7 points after two poles down and .4 cross country time penalties.

In the Intermediate B division, Christine Turner’s Kyra took the blue ribbon with Boyd Martin in the tack. The 11-year-old Canadian Warmblood (VDL Ulando H x Wellsley, by Weltstern) finished on her dressage score of 24.6.

Kelli Temple and Kara Angulo’s Metallica, an 8-year-old Holsteiner (Cancara x Ulysses, by Casall) earned second with one rail and 10.8 time penalties for a final result of 38.7. Third place went to Neil Donnelly with his own Fool Proof. The 15-year-old Holsteiner (Fuerst Gotthard x  Kachina, by Kalypso) finished inside the time on cross country, but had one pole down for a score of 41.1.

In the small-but-mighty Intermediate division at the Otter Creek Summer H.T. Genevieve Faith finished first with her own Burned You Too. Only 12 cross country time penalties marred a final result of 61.8 for the 9-year-old Thoroughbred (Takur x Twice Singhed, by Twice Burned). Kristina Marth came second with her own MHS Fernhill Killey, a 7-year-old Irish Sport Horse on a score of 66.2.

The Summer Event at Woodside

Meanwhile on the west coast, Helen Bouscaren was the big winner of the Intermediate class at Woodside’s Summer HT with her rising star Ebay. The 9-year-old Oldenburg (Escudo x Komtessa) finished on his dressage score of 32.7 as the only horse in the division to come home inside the time on cross country.

Jordan Linstedt and Janine Jaro’s  Staccato follow in second on 37.8. The 9-year-old Hanoverian (Stakkato x Certosa, by Charon) added only 4.4 cross country time penalties across the weekend. Shannon Lilley piloted Greenfort Carnival to a third place finish in the class. The 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Aughrim Knight x Easkey Princess) accumulated 6 time penalties in the cross country and one in the show jumping to finish on 42.7.

WEG Hopefuls Out In Numbers at Hartpury, Haras du Pin, Strzegom

This was a signification weekend for high performance eventing around the world as the 2018 World Equestrian Games looms less than a month away. The nominated entry deadline is tomorrow, Monday August 13, and are still waiting for team confirmations from heavy hitters including Australia, Great Britain and France. For many, this weekend was a last chance to impress selectors, so we saw great competition across the continent and the U.K. at Hartpury, Strzegom and Haras du Pin.

Tina Cook has had a bit of a rough year, but it looks to be turning right around as she and Billy The Red won the NAF Magic CIC3* at Hartpury International this weekend. She and Elisabeth Murdoch and Keith Tyson’s 11-year-old Baden-Württemberg gelding (Balou du Rouet X FBW Simply Red, by Stan The Man xx) were moved from fifth to first across the jumping phases adding just 1.2 cross country time penalties to finishing on a 26.8. Tina and “Billy” are both on Great Britain’s long list for WEG.

“Everything fell into place here, he nailed a good test because he is a world-class horse and I’m thrilled — it’s been a while since I’ve had a big win and it was a strong field. The ground was fantastic as was the course, and it was a great prep for the autumn events,” Tina said.

Second place belongs to WEG hopeful Piggy French. She and long listed Quarryquest Echo, an 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Clover Echo x Royal China, by Cavalier Royale) owned by Jayne McGivern, added only 0.4 cross country time penalties  for a three-phase score of 26.9. Piggy also earned an eighth place result with Trevor Dickens’s Vanir Kamira, who joins his stablemate on the WEG long list.

Sam Ecroyd and his own Wodan III came from outside the top ten to nab third place. The 15-year-old Anglo European gelding (Mr Concorde BJ x Tica, by Corland) had .8 time penalties added to close the weekend on 28.3 points.

In a leaderboard dominated by riders with goals of riding at the World Equestrian Games, Pippa Funnel joins the group after finishing fourth aboard Barbara and Nicholas Walkinshaw’s Billy Walk On, a 9-year-old Anglo European (Billy Mexico x Shannon Line, by Golden Bash). The pair finished on 31.2 points.

Bill Levett Elisabeth Murdoch’s 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse Lassban Diamond Lift (Easy Lift x Lassban Chow Bella, by Diamond Chin), who currently sit on Australia’s long list, finished fifth on a score of 31.4.

Eventing Nations Cup at Haras du Pin

Maxime Livio earned a decisive win of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup this weekend at Haras du Pin aboard Ecurio Livio and Soixante Sieze et Compagnie’s Pica d’Or, a 15-year-old Selle Francais (Tresor du Renom x Joyeuse Be d’Or, by  Hurlevent). Leading from the very beginning, the pair finished on their dressage score of 26.4. Maxime also finished 8th with Opium de Verrieres (31.5).

Louise Svensson Jähde, who has already been named to the Swedish team, and Waikiki 207 secured a clear show jumping round Sunday which moved them from fifth to second overall. The 12-year-old Holsteiner (Quinar x Sila, by San Patrignano Cassini), who is owned by Louise and Hans Thomsen, also finished on his dressage score of 29.4.

Great Britain’s Laura Collett and Mr. Bass earned a smashing third place finish with only 1.6 cross country time penalties marring and overall result of 30.4. This result is a shining addition to the 10-year-old Holsteiner’s (Carrico x K-Jeunesse, by Exorbitant xx) glowing resume as we await the finalization of the British team.

Andreas Ostholt and Eckl Wolf-Dieter’s Pennsylvania 28, an 18-year-old Hanoverian (Pik L x Winona, by Waldstar xx) finished fourth with a score of 30.4, and Richard Coney (GBR) was fifth on 30.6 aboard his own Kananaskis.

Potential Australian representatives in France this weekend included Emma McNab with Fernhill Tabasco, who finished 17th after having one pole down (35.4), Chris Burton with Cooley Lands, who finished 58th after 13.2 time penalties and one rail (45.5), and Robert Palm with Koko Story who finished 64th (51.4).

Looking to the team standings, France won gold in front of the home crowd, followed by the Netherlands for silver and Germany earned bronze.

Reigning world champion Sandra Auffarth had a foot perfect weekend in the CIC3* class with Nikolaus Prinz von Croy’s Viamant du Matz. She and the 9-year-old Selle Francais stallion (Diamant de Semilly x Heralina, by Voltigeur le Malin) were the only pair to manage the time on cross country, and they kept on their dressage score of 28.8—a result which earned them the spot as first reserve pair for the German team at the World Equestrian Games.

“I had a great feeling yesterday in the cross country and I was very proud of my horse. I had a good feeling about the showjumping, because my horse is a good jumper. I’m very very happy, my test went really good for me and my horse. I think the showjumping course was quite difficult, but it made it exciting and fun to watch for the audience,” Sandra said.

Christoph Wahler (GER) and his own Carjatan S, a 9-year-old Holsteiner (Clearway x Kajenna, by Galant Vert), came in second with 0.4 time penalties added for a final result of 30.2. Andreas Dibowski secured third aboard FRH Corrida, a 9-year-old Hanoverian (Contendro I x Expo, by Espri) owned by BG Corrida. This duo finished with 32.7 points. Andreas also finished fifth (39.2) with Susanne Heigel’s It’s Me xx.

Standing European champions Ingrid Klimke and SAP Hale Bob OLD slot into fourth place. Ingrid’s 14-year-old Oldenburg (Helikon xx x Goldige, by Noble Champion) took an easy cruise around the cross country for 8.8 time penalties added for a final mark of 34.

Both Andreas and Ingrid were named to the German WEG team shortly after the conclusion of show jumping. You can read the team announcement at this link.

Joining Ingrid in Tryon will be Michael Jung, Kai Rüder and Julia Krajewski, who finished 7th, 12th and 14th, respectively. Michael and his parents Brigitte and Joachim Jung’s fisherRocanna FST, a 13-year-old German Sport Horse (Ituango xx X Rose II, by Carismo) finished with 41.3 points after a confident spin around cross country added 13.2 points. Michael also won the CCI2* with Maria Stein’s Corazon.

Kai and Colani Sunrise, a 12-year-old Oldenburg (Chico’s Boy x  Larissa, by  Laudatio) owned by Bernhard Reemtsma. 15.6 time penalties were added to their dressage score for a weekend result of 45.8.

Fresh off their win at Aachen, Julia and Chipmunk FRH, a 10-year-old Hanoverian (Contendro I X Havanna, by Heraldik I) owned by Dr. Hilmer Meyer-Kulenkampff had the same finishing time as Michael and Roxy, but also had to poles in the show jumping for a final score of 48.4.

In the CIC2*, Julia Krajewski took top honors with veteran partner Samourai du Thot. The 12-year-old Selle Francais (Milor Landais x Melitos du Thot, by Flipper d’Elle) looks to be coming back into form after elimination at Aachen CIC3* last month. This weekend he added 4.4 cross country time penalties to finish on 27.6.

Germany Announces Team for 2018 World Equestrian Games

Following the final selection trial at Strzegom this weekend, The DOKR has officially named the  horses and riders who will represent Germany at the 2018 World Equestrian Games. WEG will be hosted at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina, September 12-16.

Young Rider Channels Mark Todd, Completes Pony Europeans Cross Country with One Stirrup

When 15-year-old Louise Van Dijck left the start box at the FEI Pony European Championships aboard Van Acker’s Gasmann B van het Juxschot, she was prepared and ready—but triumph nearly turned to tragedy when her stirrup leather snapped early in the course.

Without a hint of hesitation Louise kicked on, bearing a strong resemblance to eventing icon Mark Todd who infamously completed Badminton’s cross country in 1995 with only one stirrup. “He’s a good pony he jumped—he never stopped. I did it for the team. We have the best team,” Louise, who is riding for Belgium, commented in an on-camera interview after her ride, noting her pony thought the stirrup “was not necessary.”

Placed 10th after dressage on a 31, she and her pony were in striking distance of an individual medal by their start time. While the two picked up fifty time penalties, we think she’s earned the title of Miss Stickability and certainly deserves some recognition as our standing reminder to add no stirrup work into our regular riding routines.

This was no soft course Louise was up against, and the results are proof of that. The leaderboard saw a major shuffle with dressage leaders from Germany falling out of medal position to make way for Great Britain, Ireland and France to take first, second and third, respectively.

Belgium Names Team for 2018 World Equestrian Games

With exactly one month to go until the opening ceremonies, Belgium has announced their eventing squad for the 2018 World Equestrian Games, which will be held at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina. The eventing competition will take place September 12-16.

Alec van den Abeele will serve as chef d’equipe and Marc Rigouts will be the manager for the Belgian team in Tryon.

Congratulations to the following horse and rider combinations:

  • Lara de Liedekerke-Meier and Alpaga d’Arville, a 12-year-old SBS (Wunder Boy van de Zuuthoeve x Mooney Raaphorst XX, by Shamaraan XX) owned by Larga SPRL.
  • Karin Donckers and Fletcha van ‘t Verahof, a 13-year-old Belgian Warmblood (Vigo d’Arsouilles x Southern Queen XX, by South Gale XX) owned by Karin, Joris De Brabander and Carl Bouckaert.
  • Giel Vanhouche and Azrael, a 10-year-old Holsteiner (Armand XX x Z-Luna, by Landgraf I) owned by Stal Viktory and Giel.
  • Joris Vanspringel and Imperial van de Holtakkers, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood (Quidam de Revel x Ava vd Holtakkers, by Argentinus) owned by Joris and Holstrust & Catharina Speerstra.

Drama has swirled in recent weeks amidst discussions that the length of Captain Mark Phillip’s cross country course may be shortened due to severe weather this summer. Many nations, including Australia, postponed final team announcements until “formal advice from the FEI and the Tryon Organising Committee of the details and distances of the cross-country course,” which they expected yesterday, August 10. Final nominated entries are due by Monday, August 13, so we can expect a flurry of finalizations next week.

Millbrook Horse Trials is a special event held at the picturesque Coole Park Farm in Millbrook, N.Y. Drawing hundreds of horses and riders each August, the hard-working organizers had their hands full this year with weather that challenged the competition. But, in true insanity-in-the-middle fashion, eventers were ready to kick on rain or shine, and Marion de Vogel captured it all.

In Marion’s words: “Throughout the events of each day, I kept thinking the weather doesn’t matter. We love our horses so much and they’re so willing and have so much heart — they’ll all get through it. And they did. Here’s the Camelot version of the weekend — as I saw it.”

The cute chestnut in this picture is happily showing off the months of behind-the-scenes progress with an OTTB. I’ve been lucky to spend a lot of time with William, who was sourced by Lara Anderson at Full Gallop Farm, and it’s only fitting that he completed his first three-phase there with owner Susan Thomas over the weekend. He’s so sweet and willing, the challenge is getting all those pieces to fit together. Cheers to your OTTBs!

We are keeping Caroline Martin and Sara Kozumplik Murphy in our thoughts as the two are recovering after falls at Millbrook Horse Trials on Sunday.
