We’re up to 44 pairs entered in the Land Rover Kentucky Three Day CCI5*-L. Three have joined since our last update: Clayton Fredericks with two entries, FE Stormtrooper and Ophelia, and Phillip Dutton added Sea of Clouds to his roster. Entries close March 23, but with EHV-1 causing quite a stir in Europe, overseas entries still remain unknown.

Check out the complete list of entries here.

Eventing sadly lost another major event yesterday as the organizers of Bramham Horse Trials, June 10-13, announced the cancellation, saying it would be “irresponsible” to run. The UK has laid out a detailed roadmap to reopening the country this summer — one which made riders hopeful, but due to the size and scope of the property, organizers said they didn’t feel they could successfully comply with safety regulations.

A possible third case of EHV-1 has now been tied to Barn D at the World Equestrian Center. ‘Well, girls can’t be farriers.’ ‘You’re too pretty to be a farrier.’ ‘Where’s the real farrier?’ Rebecca “Beck” Ratte attacks these comments head on. As a former event rider and Cavalia performer, she’s done about everything, but shoeing always called her, and now she’s the Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team farrier. Neville Bardos is one of the most iconic horses in U.S. eventing. After a 10th place finish at the World Equestrian Games in 2010, he is possibly most well known for surviving a deadly barn fire at True Prospect Farm, after which he spent significant time recovering from smoke inhalation. It couldn’t hold him back, though, and just three months later he finished seventh at Burghley. While most of his top finishes are with Boyd Martin, he’s spent the last several years showing Boyd’s students the ropes, and his next rider might even be one of Boyd’s kids. Either way, at 22, Neville isn’t ready to slow down yet. [Horse Heroes: Neville Bardos]

Happy National Read Across American Day! Books are such a powerful tool and no one knows that better than Caitlin Gooch, the founder of Saddle Up and Read. Shocked at her home sate of North Carolina’s abysmal literacy rates, Caitlin set out to encourage more kids to read. First she teamed up with a local library where she offered a day a her father’s horse farm as a prize for checking out three or more books.

This project, which earned 501(c)(3) in 2019, also champions representation of minorities in equestrian media. With the help of the community and supporters around the country, SUAR has created a library of books that feature Black equestrians.

SUAR accepts monetary donations and book donations. Books featuring diverse characters or horses are accepted and SUAR has an Amazon wishlist which can be found here. Monetary donations can be made through saddleupandread.org – simply click the donate button and it’ll take you to PayPal. They’re also running a GoFundMe. Those based near Wendell, NC who wish to volunteer can email Caitlin Gooch at [email protected] to coordinate.

Congratulations to the many, many Intermediate and Advanced riders who competed this weekend at Pine Top. Sunday Video: Ride Around Pine Top with Tim Bourke & Quality Time

You couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day than what we saw yesterday at Pine Top Farm in Thomson, Georgia. Family owned for eight generations, Glenn and Janet Wilson’s slice of paradise attract snowbirds and locals alike to their top class events each spring and fall. For this weekend’s Advanced competitors, the conditions were idyllic, and riders jumped at the opportunity to ride over a Derek di Grazia course at this point in the season. Ireland’s Tim Bourke was among them.

“It’s a good Derek [di Grazia] course – big and bold and strong,” he said. “I just bridged my reins and let her just pick off the exercises. To be honest I didn’t look at my watch once going around. I just let her canter, but she’s so adjustable and easy to ride that she just makes the time easily without having to go fast.”

Tim finished second in the A division with Carla Abramcheck’s Quality Time, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Guidam x Ruby Roller, by High Roller), and he’s brought us along for the ride through key combinations with his helmet cam, filmed on Cambox isi3 (which he wears in his signature green, of course).

Live from Pine Top: An Advanced Recap

Jenny Caras and Fernhill Trendy. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The first Advanced of the season is always a mélange that includes a mix of entries — from experienced campaigners to first timers. For many, the first blue numbers of the year set the tone for performances to come, and a good result is a boost of confidence any rider would want. The beneficiaries of that good fortune at Pine Top Advanced are Jenny Caras Roberts and Phillip Dutton.

Jenny Caras Roberts lead the 34-entry Advanced A division from start to finish with Elyse Eisenberg’s Trendy Fernhill. The Pine Top blue ribbon was familiar for Jenny and “Joey,” a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Ars Vivendi x Cruising’s Girl, by Cruising). They picked up one just two weeks ago winning the Open Intermediate here. Today the combination had a 26.1 on the flat and added 8.4 time penalties on the cross country for a final result of 34.5.

“He did his first Advanced here last year, and this was just his fourth Advanced. I think it was the best round I’ve had on him. He was really brave and really confident. It felt pretty easy – I was just trying to have a good rhythm and not go too fast, so I was really, really happy with him,” Jenny said.

After moving up to the level in 2020, Jenny had her sights set high, but Joey’s diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and a global pandemic set him on the sidelines for most of the year. Now with his diet sorted, this pair is guns blazing toward a CCI4*-L this spring.

Tim Bourke and Quality Time. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Tim Bourke and Carla Abramcheck’s Quality Time took second place. This was the first run of the year for the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Guidam x Ruby Roller, by High Roller) who is back after recovering from an injury sustained at Tryon last November.

“At Tryon we finished the cross country double clear in the four-star long, and she had a little knick on her knee. It unfortunately had gone into the joint, so she went over to Tryon Equine Hospital and those people were incredible – they had her on the table that night and flushed the joint,” Tim said. “This is her first run back since, so she hasn’t done anything in a little while, but she’s just brilliant. She just rocks around, and you can just come out here after not running in months.”

This pair started the competition in 20th place, and they added only 8 cross country time penalties to finish on a score of 41.6.

Valerie Vizcarrondo Pride and Favian. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Valerie Vizcarrondo Pride and her own Favian, a 13-year-old Oldenburg (French Kiss x Risiko, by Relevant) were third. They were the fastest combination of the day, finishing in 6 minutes and 19 minutes for a final score of 41.7.

Doug Payne and Starr Witness. Photo by Shelby Allen.

The Pan American partnership of Doug Payne and Starr Witness, a 10-year-old Dutch mare (Chello II x Carmen, by Veneur) owned by Laurie McCree, Doug and Catherine Winter, shared a tied lead for first place until the cross country phase where a nice and easy trip in 16 time penalties moved them into fourth place (42.1).

Matt Flynn and Wizzerd. Photo by Shelby Allen.

A final score of 43.2 put Matt Flynn and Wizzerd, 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Wizzerd WV x Oklund) owned by Patrick Flynn, Kathleen Flynn, and Merry Go Round Farm, in fifth place after a clear cross country trip.

Colleen Loach and Vermont finished sixth. Colleen stepped Peter Barry’s 9-year-old Hanoverian up to the level last fall, and this weekend the combination added an educational 17.2 time penalties to their dressage score of 27.9 for a final result of 45.1. Colleen was also 8th with longtime partner Qorry Blue D’Argouges.

Alex Baugh and Mr Candyman sailed around Derek di Grazia’s track for seventh place. Eighteen cross country time penalties had them finish on 47.8 points.

Jon Holling was ninth with Advanced first-timer Prophet, an 8-year-old Trakehner owned by Jon and Chuck McGrath, finishing on a score of 51. Rounding out 10th place is Amanda Beale Clement and Carlson 119 on a score of 51.6.

Phillip Dutton and Carlchen. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Eventing magician Phillip Dutton pulled another trick out of his hat Friday, earning a 15 on the flat to set a new Advanced record. He did this with Caroline Moran’s Carlchen, an experienced campaigner in his own right. The 13-year-old Oldenburg (Clinton x Sunshine, by Lordanos) came stateside in 2019, but this is his first presentation at the level with Phillip.

Their record-breaking dressage gave plenty of breathing room for a breezy 18 time penalties on an otherwise clear cross country to finish on 34.2. Take a look at their mic drop dressage:

“I’ve been in Wellington, so I haven’t actually gone cross country much. I wasn’t sure how he’d be, but he did very well. He’s a real quality horse. He’s so athletic, and this was a great course to be able to just ride at. It’s big enough and it’s just an ideal run,” Phillip said.

Phillip Dutton and Sea of Clouds. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Phillip was also second with Sea of Clouds, a 10-year-old Thoroughbred owned by the Sea of Clouds Partnership on a score of 34.8. “He’s just come leaps and bounds in the last six months,” Phillip said. “I’m really excited about him actually – he’s a proper five-star horse if the other phases get competitive because him being a Thoroughbred he’s able to go fast and quick.”

Phillip’s other Advanced entries, Z and Fernhill Singapore, completed only the dressage and will have a run next week at Grand-Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field.

Waylon Roberts and Lancaster. Photo by Shelby Allen.

Waylon Roberts and Michelle and John Koppin’s Lancaster, a 14-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding by Yavari, were third on a score of 36.6.

As usual, Derek di Grazia’s course elicited bold, forward riding. No combinations caught the time, but 88% of the field finished with no jumping penalties.

Pine Top also had a beefy intermediate lineup. Join us in congratulating these winners:

  • Intermediate Horse: Tim Bourke & Lennard (33.2)
  • Intermediate Rider: Isabelle Bosley & Night Quality (40.9)
  • Open Intermediate A: Daniel Clasing & MW Gangster’s Game (31.1)
  • Open Intermediate B: Phillip Dutton & Quasi Cool (21.9)

Thursday News & Notes

Our hearts go out to our friends in Texas this week as they battle deadly winter storms that have left millions without power. Managing a farm is difficult enough when the temps dip this low, but in a state with systems not built to withstand storms of this duration, making do for humans and horses has been dangerous. With even more snow on the horizon for many, keep the people of Texas in your thoughts.

British Eventing saw a huge decrease in horse falls over the 2020 season. They were down a whopping 33% to be exact. Of course, there was also a massive reduction in events held due to the pandemic, but these findings remain encouraging. In the spirit of “supporting what you wish to keep,” riders like Jennie Brannigan and John Holling want you to get those entires in! The last 12 months have weighed heavily on events around the country, but now Red Hills is looking for support. If you are planning to go, don’t delay — send your entry. They usually operate thanks to local spectatorship, but without that this year, they’re planning ahead based on entries. [Red Hills International H.T.]

Some of the country’s newest frangible fences! Photo courtesy of the USEA.

We did it! Eventers have reached the $500,000 goal for the Frangible Technology Fund. Jon Holling challenged riders around the country to reach this point, and even amid a global pandemic, eventers made it work — and forced him to get a delightful #FrangibleNow tattoo. This money has benefited 116 USEA recognized events to create 151 frangible tables, 53 oxers, and 34 gate/wall fences already out on course.

This impressive milestone could not have been reached without incredible efforts from the USEA Foundation, the USEA, the Manton Foundation and US Equestrian, but the work doesn’t stop here. We can build more safe tables, oxers and gates with your generosity. Click here to donate.

Tuesday News:

USEA year-end leaderboards are about to look a lot different. Now instead of purely adding up leaderboard points, only the top six best scores earned by horse or rider during the current competition year will count toward these overall awards. Those scores also must be Minimum Eligibility Requirements (MERs) as well. Lastly, only the top 25% of any division will receive leaderboard point values. This is a lot to bite off, but the main takeaway is the USEA’s value of quality over quantity. [Quality Over Quantity: The New USEA Leaderboard Point System]

The Tokyo Olympics will be special for many nations, but especially so for Ireland, who for the first time ever has fielded eventing, dressage and show jumping teams. Take a Chance. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Take A Chance – Novice winner for sale!

Chance is a 16.2h, 2013, Bay, Thoroughbred gelding. He is a proven Novice winner with Training level experience. Chance is easy on the flat and consistently scores in the high 20’s low 30’s. He is straight forward to jump and tons of fun! I have been riding him while working for five star riders for the past year and a half. Chance is most suitable to a young rider or adult amateur looking to gain miles at training level and below. Located in Ocala, Florida. Asking price in the low five figures. Contact Danielle Beaver for more info at [email protected] or 573-291-0622.

Excel Star Eagle Eye

Excel Star Eagle Eye: 2016 16.2h bay imported Irish Sport gelding. Sire Vigo d’Arsouilles (individual gold medal SJ at WEG 2010 Kentucky with Philippe Lejeune) Dam Ultiem V by Voltaire.

He’s a lovely, talented young horse with an extraordinary brain and work ethic. He has beautiful gaits and is easy to make round. Has the scope and talent for the upper levels – eventing, showjumping or hunters. Suitable for a junior, young rider or AA – definitely has the talent for a professional. Located in South Carolina.

Safe Irish Sporthorse Packer – Event, Jump, Dressage for Jr or AA

Tea Time is an unreg. 16hh, dark bay, 2009, Irish Sporthorse mare, by Northern Spur out of Indigo’s Tricky Delila. She’s been eventing with a strong dressage foundation. She is a solid packer up to Novice and has happily schooled Training level. Ditches, banks, water – no problem. Show jumps 3′ easily and has schooled up to 3′ 7″. Will take a child around a hunter course or be a solid hunter/jumper/equitation mount for an AA. She schools third level dressage. Her super manners and forgiving temperament make her a safe partner who’s the same on or off property. Cliniced with Dom Schramm and Peter Gray. No spook or bolt. Lunges, loads, clips, hacks out, stands for vet/farrier (front shoes only). Previously had cellulitis, but no flare up in 2 yrs, no limitations or maintenance. Priced accordingly at $20k. Ready for the 2021 season. More videos available. Located in Illinois.

Redfield Fellow. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

*Upper Level Winner* Redfield Fellow

Redfield Fellow, a 2010, 16 hh, imported KWPN Gelding (Ustinov x Kelly) is everything you want in a potential 5* horse. Fellow has the blood, brain, and the talent to go all the way up the levels. He showed in the 1.35m classes and blossomed when he made the transition to Eventing. This is one of the most serious horses I have sat on and makes everything feel easy. Last year he finished 1st in the Open Preliminary on his dressage score of 30.2 at Red Hills, and was 7th in the CCI2*L National Championships at Virginia Horse Trials after a dominant year. I would keep him for myself if I could! He is aimed for a 3*L this spring. Located in Ocala, FL.

Exquisite. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Exquisite – Hanoverian/TB

Exquisite: a 6 year old hanoverian/tb mare by Escapade. Talented and will go very far! She is schooling Novice and has free jumped 1.30 m. She would excel as an event horse or hunter/jumper. Suitable for an amateur who doesn’t mind a forward ride. She also has full x-rays available. Located in Florida.
