Will Faudree’s Wednesday News and Notes from Horse Quencher

Will F bday.JPG

Happy Birthday to Will Faudree! Last night, Will and his friends celebrated his birthday in fine form. From the look on Will’s face, it was bound to be a good time. And man, credit to who ever made/created/bought that cake. Yum.

I say it every time I write for Wednesday morning, and I will say it again. I LOVE hump day. Every Sunday, I start looking forward to the next weekend. Getting through Wednesday just makes it seem that much closer. With Boekelo starting, there is going to be great coverage to follow for the rest of the week/weekend. And hopefully with that coverage will come some photo evidence of the much talked about parties. First, we must get through the trot up. We will have those details to you as we know them.

Boekelo schedule

Boekelo entries

Over the weekend, we updated you on recent changes to the USA Boekelo riders. In case you missed the changes, please be sure to check here. Sadly, Allie Slusher and Jules Stiller will not be attending. Michael Pollard will be stepping on to the list with the fantastic, DV8. [Updates]

Speaking of Boekelo, Boyd’s horses, head groom, Lindsay, and Boyd himself have arrived safely. Boyd has given his horses a nice canter as well as had a flat school with Bettina Hoy. It has also been decided that Boyd will ride Remington in the team competition. With the horses looking magnificent, Boyd says there is potential for a “best turn out award” tomorrow! Keep checking back for more Boyd updates. [Martin does Holland

For those of you are big Mr. Ed fans, I come with some good news. Mr. Ed will be taking the big screen. Mr. Ed has been picked up by the same studio who created Flicka. With several “lip moving” techniques, there is no doubt Mr. Ed really will be talking. Go ahead, purchase your advanced tickets. [Mr. Ed goes big]

Matthew Wright has won the Express Eventing Final at HOYS. Wright, who was the favorite leading up to the competition, took home a nice prize of 12,500 pounds. After having one down, Wright jumped a trickier fence to eliminate his 4 points. Wright has won 4 of the 5 Express Eventing competitions. He is hopeful that the Express Eventing will take off for everyone concerned. Alex Hua Tian finished second and Harry Meade third. [Express Eventing

Silva Martin has returned from Dressage at Devon. With 5 wins, 5 second, a fifth, two championships and one reserved champion, I would say they had a fantastic week. According to Silva, the horses couldn’t have tried harder. And to top it all off, student Ashlea, won the best foot forward award for her positive attitude. [DAD]

On Tuesday, you got to see a really cool Normandy Bank video from Visionaire. This awesome video was of rider LucyAnna Westaway. Lucy has some really good EN karma because her mom works for Point Two. EN karma is always good for those moments we really need our horses to show us just how athletic they are!

Molly Rosin reflects on how far she has come in the past year. From a few horses in training, to a few top notch competitors, it has been a good year. A good year made even better by having a new facility to work out of. With a few more events left, Molly will finish off a good season and be looking forward to next year. [Havarah Equestrian

As eventers, I believe we all have a bit of a need to thrill. However, what may be one person’s thrill, will be another person’s biggest fear. As we saw, Jennie B. recently tore up the bareback puissance at Plantation. And according to Facebook, Maryland event rider, Kerry Blackmer, recently jumped out of a plane. So folks, we all like our thrills. But…
Until next time, go eventing!

Because they’re too good not to look at…

Every Monday seems to come too fast. Hopefully everyone had a great weekend and is ready for another great week. With Boekelo, the Pan Ams and Fair Hill coming up, there will be a lot of good coverage headed your way. I can truly say, I am sad John hasn’t demanded I go to Holland and cover Boekelo. Maybe next year…

It was a good weekend for eventing around the states. If you haven’t checked in lately, be sure to scroll through and check out all the Morven coverage from John and Jump Start coverage from Samantha.

In the great state of Texas, Greenwood HT took place this past weekend. This was one of my favorite events growing up. Talk about a fun crowd of people to hang out with and a nicely run event. In the Intermediate Championship division, Kadi Eykamp took the blue. This girl is really on a roll this spring. Siobhan O’Brien won the Prelim Championship. The awesome, Mike Huber took the blue in the Training Championship.

Head just a little further west and you get another fantastic event. The Colorado Horse Park Fall HT. In the CCI*, Angelika Beutel and Classic Touch took the win. In the OI, James Atkinson and Gustav took the blue just ahead of Julie Wolfert. The Training Horse division was won by a good friend of mine, Denise Daily-Thomas and Baker.

Big congratulations to the most embarrassing moment contest winners- Biz, Anon and Jess. ESJ will be in touch to arrange to send you a copy each of Stories from the Saddle. Thank you to everyone who participated in the competition.

An ice cream shop has had to remove their mascot due to some confusion. While the cone was simply meant to attract attention to the store, passersby though he might happen to be a member of the KKK. Yes folks, that’s right. I find this absolutely ridiculous. Take a look [here

If anyone is looking for a good movie, I highly recommend 50/50. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will leave there feeling a little bit different than you did when you walked in. It definitely earned the 3 1/2 stars it was awarded.

D Niro had a big win in the Grand Prix Special at Devon. With rider Jacqueline Brooks aboard, D Niro settled nicely into his work to make the test look effortless. This pair has only been together a short time and only at this level since August. They will be heading to Florida with a burst of confidence. Now, all eyes are focused on the Olympics. [Devon]

Katie Murphy had a good Morven adventure. Lucky for her, she seems to have a good guy on her side. The kind of guy who doesn’t notice (or lies) when her urine/manure soaked pants are smelling up everything. Having good company makes it all that much nicer when you have a good show as well. After a successful weekend with the young horses, Katie should be going home one happy girl. [Murphy Eventing

Team CEO had a good weekend at Jump Start HT [Brrrrr]

Because it’s been a while since I mentioned her…

Stay tuned. Coverage from Holland will be on the way over the next few days. This is assuming those who are there can get out of the beer tent long enough to update us! Go Eventing.

Sunday Links from Tipperary

Good morning EN! Well it looks as though fall has arrived for much of the east coast. With dropping temperatures, and even more rain, I’m getting a little worried for the winter to come. The Pan Am division is well under way at Morven Park. As John mentioned earlier, a decision will be made this AM as to whether there will be changes in the way this section is run. John keeps his computer glued to his right butt cheek so keep checking back for updates regarding all the latest Morven happenings.
As a complete side note, Saturday football was a complete disappointment. Thank you Stephen Garcia for making me angry all of Saturday night.

Molly’s Wednesday News and Notes from Horse Quencher

As I read John’s news and notes from Tuesday morning, I found myself wondering back to the idea of Fantasy Football. Fantasy Football is such a great creation. I mean, you get to have a perfectly valid excuse to waste your time. Don’t get me wrong, I rarely need an excuse. But, each year, I contemplate creating my own team. However, I would be limited by my lack of knowledge of players names. And, considering most guys are too afraid to have a girl join them, I would probably have to find my own fellow females to join up. I will say though, anything football is always considered a perfect use of time in my eyes. As I sat Monday night watching the game, I found myself yelling and screaming with the four other Cowboys fans in the bar. It was pure, organized chaos. So why not create a fantasy team for eventing? Surely eventers will love organized yelling and screaming. Perhaps this could be a contest for 2012? I’ll start working on John now.

– Extra cross country tickets for London 2012! So far 55,000 cross country tickets have been released and it is said that more will be released as the games get closer. However, there are concerns for travelers on cross country day. It’s suggested that travelers will experience 2+ hours of wait time at train stations. However, there will hopefully be a reduction of non-Olympic travelers. [tickets]
– Lauren Shannon: training, missing fences, and fun hunter trials. [blog it]
– Tighter whip rules have been put into effect by British RSPCA and World Horse Welfare. There will be more restrictions on the use of the whip in racing and there will be serious actions taken on those who do not obey these rules. They have cut the amount in which a whip can be used per race. Now, you can use the whip 7 times in a flat race and 8 times in a jump race. This is nearly have the allowed use before. [Whip changes]

Sally Cousins’ Monday News and Notes from ECOGOLD

Now that is positive thinking. Photo via commentcherry.com

Happy Monday Eventing Nation! As we near closer to October, we get closer to the end of the season. But don’t you worry yet, there are still several more exciting competitions coming up! But I must warn you, as the weather gets cooler, EN’s Ali, gets less concerned about her smell and showers less. I advice you avoid her if you see her in public.

Also, after seeing the movie Contagion, I think everyone needs to create a plan for if the world should have an epidemic and the world goes crazy. Maybe the start of extreme couponing to save massive amounts of food? Also, if you have seen the movie, are you as afraid to touch things as much as I am?

Sally Cousins is at it again. This weekend, she finished in the top three places in the OI section at Middleburg. That isn’t just pure luck, that takes talent. I always say, Sally has one of the best eyes out there. Karen was out on Veronica after her fall at Plantation. She looks to have had a nice weekend and is hopefully feeling on track for Holland. Oh hey, Sally won the OP as well!
Down in GA, Becky obviously tore it up in the CIC***. But I also want to give a big shout out to Brittany Kart for winning the Advanced. Brittany works really hard and this win is well deserved. Clark is continuing his good season with a win in the CIC**.
Across the country, James Alliston and Jumbo’s Jake had one down to drop to second. This allowed Sandra Donnelly to slip in for the win. There was a lot of competition out on the west. Tamie Smith took another four year division win on Fleecework’s Cinco and Max McManamy took the five year old section.
Over in England, up and coming star, Georgie Spence, has been keeping busy with a lot of competing. Check out her journal to find up just how busy she has been. [Georgie Spence]

Have your animals been blessed for World Animal Day? Well if not, get on it. On October 2, St. Peter Church offers blessing for animals. Send in a picture of your pet to have him/her included. You can send your pictures via email. Easy. [World Animal Day]

I would like to give a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Lucia Strini and Joe Ruckert. Saturday evening they were married in what was said to be a beautiful ceremony and Plain Dealing Farm in Scottsville,VA. Despite her recent fall at Plantation Field, Lucia was able to make it down the aisle. And with the comfort of a Lazy Boy recliner, Lucia was able to sit back and relax while talking with friends. I am sure pictures will circulate soon. EN wishes the best to this newly married couple.

Denny Emerson puts nice photos on Facebook. Recently, Denny posted one and talked about how today’s poor horsemanship could be remedied. [Check it out]

This week, in the Dressage world, there is a pretty huge competition going on. That’s right folks, Dressage at Devon is here. This is a top notch competition where you will see a lot of high quality rides. Silva Martin will be Devon bound. And I am also proud to say my super duper, awesome roommate heads to Devon on Wednesday. For those in the area, you should stop by and watch. It will be well worth the time. [Dressage at Devon]

Virginia’s Sunday Morning Links

Get your Sunday morning coffee- ASAP.
Well ladies and gents, the word on the street is John has returned to the great state of Virginia. In fact, I can confirm this word by saying John IS back in Virginia. There was a sighting of him Saturday afternoon at the Virginia football game. He was the goofy kid screaming every UVA cheer as he watched his team slip through the cracks. John’s return is the greatest news the state has received in a long time considering no one has been able to tear up 80’s night like John since his departure some time ago.

Monday News and Notes from ECOGOLD

Happy Monday Eventing Nation! Well the cooler weather certainly seems to be upon us. Although it has me a bit worried about the potential brutal winter that could be ahead, I am just choosing to enjoy it. Plantation Field wrapped up in fine fashion this weekend with Marilyn Little-Meredith winning the CIC*** (her first ever!!) Marilyn makes for a very impressive story and it will be exciting to see what the future holds for her. With Fair Hill right around the corner, the excitement continues.

In case you missed out:

Across the pond, American Jules Stiller was out an about with two horses competing at The Whatley Manor International Horse Trails held at Gatcombe Park. Jules had both horses in various sections of the CIC*. With slow cross country rounds, and one stop, I am sure it was a good, educational experience. New Zealand was looking fierce once again with several wins across several divisions. They really are growing rapidly in strength. [Whatley Manor]

Whatley Manor [Full Results]

At Marlborough Horse Trials, Kate Chadderton took the Open Preliminary lead. Kim Severson was out with a with in the Novice.

And at one of my favorite horse trials growing up, Flying Cross, Brigitte Kettel won the Open Preliminary. Ralph Holstein won the Open Novice A section on an impressive score of 23.5.

Zara Philips has had good fortune at Ballindenisk HT by winning the CIC***. Zara rode her own horse, Lord Lauries, to the victory. With one down in the show jumping, she was still able to hold her lead. British rider, Izzy Taylor, followed Zara for second place. [Ballindenisk]

Kyle Carter has gone from palaces to pastures and is loving every minute of it. After returning from his trip across the pond, Kyle found himself competing this weekend at an unrecognized horse trail with some of the up and coming horses. All the horses went well for Kyle. Two of his home breds even got out for the weekend. It sounds like Kyle has some talented horses in the barn that are going to make serious prospects for the future. My favorite? Trust Fund- born the same year as Kyle’s daughter, Riley. Trust Fund will start Riley’s college fund when he sells. [Palaces to Pastures]

Jonathan Wentz has won the USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship. Wentz set two goals at the age of 12. Compete at the WEG and London Olympics. He was chosen as part of the ten riders to compete at the WEG. Now, with the selection getting even more competitive, Wentz will be hoping for a spot on the team for London. Speaking of his National Championship win, Wentz said, “It was down to the wire. I knew one mistake could decide the entire competition. That was the main goal going into today’s teset: No mistakes whatsoever. no geometry errors. When I got on, I could tell the two days of competition had drained Richter a bit, so I knew it was going to be a harder test today. But I knew if I rode accurately I could put down a score similar to day 1.” Congratulations to Jonathan Wentz on his win. As a side note, Wentz is also a student at SMU where he is triple majoring. Impressive! [Wentz Wins]

As we all know, our sport can be full of awkward moments such as our horse bucking us off in the warm up or bending over and splitting our pants up the backside. Sometimes the awkward isn’t even embarrassing, it’s just plain awkward- like John.
So for this weeks poll:

Happy choosing! Go eventing and all it’s awkwardness.

Serena Williams’ Tuesday News and Notes from Pennfield

Did yo mama ever teach you not to back talk? Certainly Serena Williams’ mother didn’t. Growing up, talking back to my parents earned a very fine punishment. Soap. In the mouth. In the women’s US Open, it sure seemed like Williams’ 1) thinks she can talk to whomever,  however and 2) doesn’t need bar soap, she needs liquid soap. While yelling at the chair umpire, Williams even gave “the point.” Now if that isn’t a sure way to timeout, I don’t know what is. Her punishment? A generous $2000 fine. Probably the equivalent of a 30 minute shopping trip. I’m sure she is really hurting over this one.
It’s Tuesday for those of you forgot. That means tomorrow is Wednesday, hump day. This is also known as John’s favorite day of the week.
It is also important to note, Tony Romo blew the Sunday night game for the Cowboys.
Now, on to the part you probably came here to read…
-The US Show Jumping Team has been announced for the Pan Ams. The team will consist of Beezie Madden, McLain Ward, Laura Kraut and Christine McCrea. Lauren Hough will be the back up. This is a real world class team and they should have a good medal winning chance. [US Show Jumping]
-Speaking of show jumping- Eric Lamaze and Hickstead have won the $1million CN International at Spruce Meadows. There were 35 pairs in this two round competition. After jumping the final fence, Lamaze threw his helmet in the air and galloped around the arena while nearly 90,000 people gave him a standing ovation. Lamaze was awarded $325,000 for his first place plus an additional $50,000 for winning the event a second time. This brings his Spruce Meadows career earnings to $3.5 million. Lamaze also had two other wins during the week. In addition, his students were finding their ways into some top placing. [Get it Lamaze]
-A UK website for holiday rentals has just released some funny and unusual requests they have received. The most recent question was “where can I keep my donkey at night?” Now we all know the Brits are a bit strange (kidding!), but there are some seriously weird questions asked by potential guests. Here are five questions for your enjoyment [Holiday Maker]
  1. Can you guarantee the pool heat at a constant 88 degrees and if not can we get a discount for every degree under?
  2. Can we have a machete/cutlass to keep under our bed?
  3. Can you move the house 180 degrees?
  4. Where is the nearest shop for kosher foods and what are the exact measurements of frozen food space in the villa to store the supplies?
  5. What is the distance between the toilet seat and the nearest wall?
-Speaking of the British- The Junior Event Team has claimed team gold and two individual medals. The team was in bronze position after dressage, silver after cross country, and moved into the victory position after a tense show jumping. All three riders counting for a team score jumped clean. [More gold for Britain]

-Monty has done a great blog about Blenheim. I have pulled the best part of the blog, just for your enjoyment.
The state of the union just improved, and American fortunes were distinctly on the up at Blenheim compared to Burghley with 3 riders in the top ten (Tiana Coudray 2nd, Clark Montgomery 5th, Will Faudree 8th). These three (along with Boyd Martin) represent the rising tide of talent across the pond, and if they can continue to post this type of result against European based riders, it could make for an interesting Olympics for the US. I think I’d actually put money on Clark making it onto the US team, and if Australian gangster, Neville Bardos, doesn’t make it after his performance at Burghley, someone needs to deselect the selectors.” [Talk Horse]

-Doug Payne has had the opportunity to drive a rig way longer than he is tall. As Buck Davidson was flying straight from Burghley to the AECs, he was needing someone to drive his rig from PA to GA for him. Who better than our favorite red head? After making a few nervous turns, and some minimal backing, Doug successfully handled the trailer. Hey, Doug even had a good weekend competing. If you want to find him and have him teach you to drive, just head up to Flora Lea, Morven or Fair Hill. [There’s a ginger behind the wheel]
-As we know, Japan qualified a team for the Olympics over Australia this weekend [Horsetalk]

-Mary King’s former Olympic mount is recovering from lymphangitis after a stable fire. After the fire, King Soloman developed a bad case of lymphangitis in a hind limb. With aggressive treatment, they were able to get him on the road to recovery. Solly is now enjoying life as a dressage horse. We wish him a speedy recovery so he can hurry back to the dressage ring. [road to recovery]

Bad form Serena:

Watch what you say today. You may found your mouth full of soap or your wallet a little lonely. Go Eventing.

The face just says it all! Thanks ESJ for the photo

America! I would say the US really stepped up in England. And what better day to lay down just how good we Americans are then on September 11. Tiana has really stepped up from a disappointing spring to give the US something to get real excited about. Clark and Will both had fantastic weekends. All three of these horses are serious horses for the future. Phillip should be equally as pleased with Mighty Nice. This horse also has a bright future ahead. Thank you to ESJ for all the excellent coverage.

The AECs have wrapped up in fine fashion. One day I swear I am going to make it to the AECs to see what its all about. Chattahoochee is one of the finest venues in the world and US eventing is lucky to have such a fantastic supporter in Carl Bouckaert. Thanks to John, those of us who weren’t there were able to take part in the action from the comfort of our homes.

For a few other results:

Copper Meadows HT [Live Scores]

Whidbey Island PC One Days [Live Scores]

Bucks County Horse Park Fall HT [Live Scores]

– Ali thought I should write tonight about Family Scrabble. I am guessing this has something to do with her addiction to playing scrabble. Her family tries to get rid of her on a constant basis so I am thinking she forces them to hang out with her by playing family scrabble.

– As I write this, Sunday Night Football is going down. With the JETS playing in New York, it’s a special night for football. While the score isn’t looking great as of now, but it’s still a valid effort. Let’s hope for a turn around!

– After traveling to England, Silva is now back in action in PA. With her and her students preparing for Dressage at Devon, things are bound to be in full swing. Silva will be riding three horses including Faye Wolfe’s, Stately. Her youngest mount, a three year old, sure will be getting a good experience at Devon. Please continue to the blog to see Silva schooling one of her Devon rides. [Devon bound]

– Calvin Ramsay took the Junior Novice Championship division at the AEC. After almost not making the trip with his 23 year mount (due to hock injury) this has got to be a nice win. Ramsay, who is from Louisiana, takes three lessons a week with his father. During the summer, he travels to Karen and David O’Connors to gain a little extra experience. [Get to know Calvin Ramsay]

– Best of Blogs: And suddenly it was over

– In big news: Australia didn’t qualify as a team for London. New Zealand won the team competition. But it is Japan that stole the show. Finishing second in the team competition, they secured their spot for the Olympics. The Australians are surely hurting as this is a major blow to their program. [Go Japan]
– In case you missed it in the intro or on the results, Tiana Coudray finished second at Blenheim. Tiana felt like her round was “text book.” I am so thrilled for her as she was really due for a good weekend. Clark claims to not have had his smoothest round in the show jumping. But despite this, he was thrilled. Clark is such a beautiful rider and his results shouldn’t shock anyone. [USEF Blenheim]
– Steffen Peters will lead the American’s in the dressage competition at the Pan Ams. The team consists of Peters, Heather Blitz, Cesar Parra, and Maria Festerling. This is a top quality team for the US. All four horses are capable of winning a medal which gives them a good chance to win a team gold. [Dream team for dressage]

– Emily Beshear had a good weekend at the AECs. With student, Carrie Meehan winning the preliminary amateur division taking her second title in a row, Emily must feel good. Emily also had a great finish in the Advanced with a double clean XC that was sure to catch a few eyes. Here is a clip of her riding Moose in the novice where they finished 3rd. Moose is owned by the wonderful Chris and Michelle Adamson and is enjoying his first season eventing. [Brickland Eventing]

Hope the AEC hangover is slowly leaving for everyone. Stick around for some fun here on EN this week. Go Eventing.

Fall Football’s Thursday News and Notes from Devoucoux

EN.jpg

Photo thanks to Lee Lee Jones
Eventing Nation is everywhere

I love short work weeks. I have spent the entire week thus far thinking it is a different day. Luckily I believe it is Wednesday instead of Thursday which means the weekend is actually closer than I think. For eventing, the weekend starts today. With two of the biggest competitions in the eventing world getting underway, there is a lot to be involved with. In the US, The American Eventing Championships gets underway today. There are gobs and gobs of riders from all over the US in Georgia for this incredible event. Speaking of Georgia, John loves that state even though he spends as much time as possible making fun of it in his FAQs post.
Across the tiny pond, Blenheim is getting underway with the dressage. With eight North American’s competing, there will be plenty of reasons to follow Blenheim. Coming right after Burghley, there will still be a lot of excitement at Blenheim. It is also nice for people who didn’t have the ideal “go” at Burghley because they can use this as their fall three day. Believe me, Blenheim is a serious three star and will give us a lot of excitement.
In case you missed it, the eight North America pairs are as follows:

Phillip Dutton and Mighty Nice
Clark Montgomery and Loughan Glen
Will Faudree and Pawlow
Aimee Chambers and After Eight
Julian Stiller and Enjoy Me
Tiana Coudray and Ringwood Magister
Kyle Carter and Madison Park (CAN)
Kathryn Robinson and Let It Bee (CAN)

And for a few live scores:

Copper Meadows HT [Live Scores]

Whidbey Island PC One Days [Live Scores]

Bucks County Horse Park Fall HT [Live Scores]

Not only is Blenheim serving as a glorious fall three day, it is serving as a qualification for the Olympics. Japan, China and Australia will be fighting for one last spot. I can’t even begin to understand how focused/worried/nervous/stressed those riders must feel heading into Blenheim. [Qualify NOW]

FLAIR is having a contest at the AECs:
“This month’s contest is for anyone out there planning on going to, or riding in, this weekend’s American Eventing Championships (AECs) in Georgia. You cowboys and cowgirls may be grumbling —  feeling slighted and left out of this one? After a fantastic Burghley, Colleen Rutledge has had a very exciting journey back to the states. As she said, she is now well diversed in transportation. But what sounds most exciting is her time spent in Amsterdam. Sangria always makes for a good time. Sangria combined with Tequila and Amsterdam- I’m not even sure John could handle that. [Collen’s Journey Home]

Zara Philips may have missed her honeymoon, but she is still thinking of baby making. But hold on, don’t get excited just yet. Babies won’t be anywhere in the near future. For now, Zara and her husband are enjoying the simple things like watching CSI (just like my roommate and I!!) and cooking. Both of them are extreme athletes and for now they plan to just put in their work. One day, there will be little rugby playing horse riding babies. But not now. [Simple life]

As my fellow east coasters have experienced, fall is on the way. And with the arrival of fall, I can’t help but think FOOTBALL. While I am a NFL fan, college is where it is at. I wish I could remember John’s favorite team so I could poke fun, but I can’t. All I know is: 1) if it’s Kentucky, they had a very low scoring opening game. 2) Yes, I love South Carolina football and yes that includes rebel Stephen Garcia. 3) The best game of last weekend was MD vs Miami. The refs favored Miami and if that is how they plan to call the games all season, there are going to be some very unhappy fans. But, MD still won. 4) I will try to avoid talking too much football, but sometimes I can’t resist. and 5) SCREW ALABAMA.

Hurricane Irene has left behind a lot of devastation. But one heart breaking story is the missing 22 horses in upstate New York. The horses have been missing from Leland Neff’s property since August 27. There were three generations of horses there. Neff has a fantastic breeding program. Not one horse has been found dead. But with heavy destruction and now another evacuation order, finding them is proving nearly impossible. Please read further to see how you can help. [22 missing horses]

The Day After’s Monday News and Notes from ECOGOLD

success (1).jpg
Photo used with kind permission of Allie Conrad

What a weekend! In case any body has missed it, William Fox-Pitt pulled his 6th Burghley win! To win Burghley once is an incredible feat. To win it twice, wow. But six times? I feel like this man deserves some serious worshiping. Then you have Andrew Nicholson finishing second. And Mary Kind third. That is a real world class top three.

Of course, my two favorite parts of the entire weekend belong to Boyd and Sinead. Boyd has been through one terrible summer. But he and that horse really showed what they are made of. Horses have so much heart. But are there many with the heart of Neville? Who knows. What this pair has gone through to get to that seventh place finish is unthinkable. Somebody should contact Disney, this story needs to be on the world stage!

And Sinead, oh Sinead. I spent all Saturday morning with my stomach in knots for this girl. Not because I thought she couldn’t do it. But, because I was dying to see her show the world she how good she has become. Sinead has improved so much over the past two years. First in Kentucky she catches the eventing world’s eye. Now in England, she stamps her place firmly in the eventing world. I can’t wait to see what comes over her for 2012. She is getting better and better which means a lot of people should be getting pretty scared of her.

Colleen Rutledge is another one who really impressed me. Boy can that horse jump. Colleen and Shiraz really have a special partnership. His style around the cross country is so enthusiastic. If she can work to improve his dressage, the US will be watching another great pair.

Hawley Bennett and Jessie Phoenix as sitting on two of the coolest jumping horses. Although I am sure Hawley is bummed about her glance of, she should still be thrilled with her weekend. I look so forward to seeing both of the pairs next year.

Leslie Wylie has given a great recap of her weekend at Kentucky Classique. In her prelim debut, she gained a great education. From no flying changes being allowed in the counter canter to bogey fences on the XC, there was a lot learned. Leslie talks about her weekend with good humor. And after a positive XC school and a good pitcher of Sangria, Leslie should be feeling pretty good about herself! On to the next event… [Wylie Eventing]

Team CEO had a busy weekend at Kentucky Classique [Team CEO results]

I’ve heard many good things about Aspen Farm HT. But this volunteer really made me want to go volunteer there (although, not sure it is close enough for a weekend volunteer trip for me)! There are few things greater than a well run event. But we all know, a well run event can’t go off without some seriously great volunteers. At Aspen, they treat their volunteers like rock stars. Warm breakfast and tee shirts?? Oh yes. These types of things make volunteers want to come back for more. [Get your volunteer on]

Five Points HT played host to all the levels this weekend. Marilyn Little- Meredith was out with two horses in the advanced. She took home a blue and white in the advanced. Steph B. and Port Authority were out for an advanced run to finish second. Nina Ligon had a second place finish in the OI. However, she had two falls on her two newest mounts. The weather in North Carolina was absolutely beautiful. Five Points runs a really lovely fall event. I highly suggest those who haven’t attended, do.

As always, I love it when grooms get the attention they deserve. [Groom’s award]

The show jumping at Burghley was held in the torrential rain. Rain like this is no fun for anyone. But at Burghley, it’s even more miserable. Horse and Hound blogger, Lucy Higginson, recaps the show jumping. Poor Kitty King had one miserable round. Everyone is probably glad to be safely tucked into their beds. Well everyone except WFP who is hopefully tearing up the town.  [Horse and Hound]

Get geared up for Plantation Field. This event does a great job at getting the community involved. There are tons of fun activities for all people. Food, bouncy play things, games, and of course, great horses to watch! Tickets are $25 per car load ($20 in advance). So pack in the people, pack the coolers, and come out to a great day of eventing! [Plantation Field]

This is a really big week here on Eventing Nation. The American Eventing Championships get under way as does Blenheim HT in England. This means John is bound to be spinning in circles and forgetting his own name. Thank goodness we have Annie around to keep him on a short and controlled leash. Getting ready people, your going to get a great week here on EN. Go Eventing.

Go North America’s Thursday News and Notes from Devoucoux

Samantha Clark photo
Good morning Eventing Nation! You have made it to the better half of the week. With Thursday comes the start of dressage at Burghley! The North American excitement will get under way with Hawley Bennett and her lovely mare at noon local (7am ET). Following her will be Will Coleman. Boyd and Neville will take center stage at 3:15 local time (10am ET). Finishing up the day will be Colleen Rutledge. Remember, there are tons of ways to get in on the Burghley action. But in case you have forgotten, feel free to re-visit John’s post. We all love more time with John. [Get in on the action]

Here is the start of the US (and Canada) weekend eventing stalking:

Hawley Bennett has done a fantastic interview with Three Days Three Ways. I must admit, I usually get bored when I read rider interviews. They all seem to share the same information. But Hawley really gives a great interview. She doesn’t just answer the questions, she shares the stories behind her answers. Hawley has a great career, and incredible horse, the perfect husband, and who knows, maybe a baby in the future. This west coast girl is the real deal. Best of luck to Hawley today at Burghley. [Hawley Bennett]

Beware, the Kiwi’s are out in force at Burghley this week. With 13 Kiwi pairs competing, there is bound to be some variety at the top of the leader board. With the likes of Andrew Nicholson, Clark Johnstone, and Caroline Powell, there are some real potential winners. Andrew is on a winning streak. But oh wait, so is Clark. And well Caroline, I believe she and the lovely Lenamore have already won at this level. But let’s not forget Mark Todd. I mean come on, it’s Mark Todd. And what about the comeback kid, Blythe Tait. The Kiwi’s are a serious force to be reckoned with. [Kiwi invasion]

And just in case you didn’t know, all horses passed the first inspection at Burghley. Three horses were held and passed upon re-inspection. [Trot up]

Best of Blogs: Jon Holling
Ten years ago, in the warm up for XC at Rocking Horse HT, Jon Holling spoke to me. It was right then and there that I developed my first true love. Jon, and his wife Jenn, are two of my favorite people on the event scene. They have both been a big part of my career with horses from a young age. They are incredibly hard workers and I can’t think of a team that is more deserving of a US team spot. Go Hollings!

The stunning grey, Ringwood Cockatoo, has found a fine place to retire in the UK. After spending some time at the lower levels with a Thai rider, Cockatoo will now enjoy life as a dressage ride. Claire Llewellyn will be taking over the reins. Claire also has Leslie Law’s former 4* mount, Shear H20. Not a bad ride to pick up in the dressage world, I’d say. [Ringwood Cockatoo]
Boyd Martin is having a good start to Burghley. With a sweet Land Rover to cruise in for the weekend, Boyd sure is looking fly. He’s had a dressage lesson with Bettina to get things tuned up. And, it even seems that talkative Boydy may have gone silent when he hit fence four of the cross country. [Boyd Martin takes on Burghley]

Michael Pollard’s Monday News and Notes from ECOGOLD

Samantha Clark photo
Happy Monday and welcome to the start of another week. This past weekend has been an exciting one. And this week? The excitement continues. At Richland Park, many riders were searching for top performances across all the divisions. But Michael Pollard has out done any expectations. He was sure to be on the selectors mind with a second place finish in the PAG division on Hanni. But, one great finish wasn’t enough for Michael. He also took first in the Advanced section on DV8. And wait… a second place in the CIC** aboard Jude’s Law. Sounds to me like Michael has some good karma to take over the pond.
Last I heard, Michael was successfully dropped off at the Detroit airport to fly to the UK. Michael should be feeling really good about his weekends- past and upcoming.
Well, Monday only means one thing. At least this Monday only means one thing. Burghley is upon us. Bring on the added attitudes and barf bags for all those partaking! With good America crowd competing at Burghley, there should be a lot of Americans on edge for the excitement ahead of us.
And in case you completely forgot to check on EN this past weekend and missed out on all the live scores…

Europeans: [Individual ResultsTeam Results]

The Germans were on fine form on their home base at the Europeans. Michael Jung sure is laying down some fierce competition and giving the rest of the world something to fear. But the Germans in general? Strong. Great Britain lost the gold for the first time since 1993. Hopefully this weekend will fire them back up for London. The French finished in the silver position and are continuing to grow into a really competitive country. However, it is the Germans we must fear. A team gold and a 1,2,3 in the individual standings? Holy cow. [Run, the Germans are coming!]

And in case you didn’t check the live scores, or any of John’s Richland coverage, Buck Davidson won the CIC*** on the well known, Ballynoe Castle RM. Despite Jennie jumping last, Buck left the ring knowing he was a winner. Jennie and Buck sat tied for first place. But with Buck finishing closer to the optimum time on the XC, he came out the winner. It is really nice to see ‘Reggie’ out this fall in fantastic form. [Reggie does it]

DPEquestrian: A weekend to forget
So EN, how many of you were effected by Irene? Here in central VA, I only saw high winds and a lot of rain. Move an hour east? Richmond looked to be a wreck. Move another hour east? Even worse. As I avidly stalked The Weather Channel, I had to laugh at some seriously crazy people. As one news reporter was reporting live from VA Beach, there were cars driving by, people out boarding their houses up, and some leaving seeming to be town. While these all seem like normal activities, they are probably best accomplished BEFORE the hurricane hits. Just saying. Hope everyone is safe and not too much damage has been done.
In true eventer form, hurricanes don’t stop the competition from happening. A lot of people braved the weather and headed out to compete this weekend. One competitor shares her weekend at Loudon with us. The weather held fairly well and this pair is AEC bound. [Braving the storm]
Did anyone see this? What are your thoughts, EN? [Frequently Feline]
Katherine Rizzo gives a fantastic review of August eventing at Fair Hill and Waredaca. Well done to so many riders for their top finished. Shout out to Steph Butts for having great competitions and many, many ribbons! [Recap]
At Loudon Ht, Sally Cousins was out for the blue. She took the top spot in both Intermediate sections and Prelim A. Lauren Kieffer also had a win in the Novice. I give these riders a lot of credit for braving the weather and heading out.
I also want to give a shout out to Dehlia McAfee and Whispered Notion for winning the Open Preliminary at Heritage Park HT. This is my former local hometown event and I love seeing all the great results my friends put up. Also, thank you to my totally awesome, coolest, sweetest mother who spent her Saturday jump judging all levels.
According to Facebook, Patricia from ECOGOLD is Burghley bound (and I believe safely in the UK). If you are in the UK, please be sure to stop by and chat with her about all the fantastic products ECOGOLD has to offer.

Hannah Sue’s Friday News and Notes from FLAIR

Good morning Eventing Nation! You have made it to the end of the week. Hopefully those of you on the east coast are getting rused to the aftershocks that keep occurring. I was very sad that I didn’t get to feel the earthquake. But the 1am aftershock? Oh yes, that I felt. And now a hurricane? The world is ending. I am taking all $50 I have and going to blow it.

As we all know based on John’s great coverage, Richland Park is going on. And across the pond, and then a little bit further, the European Championships are going on. For those of you not at all the events that are going down, it’s maybe for the best! The weather could get crazy this weekend on the east coast, and well you never know, and earthquake might just hit again.
School is back in session. This of course means I now have more time to stalk the internet for EN news.
Let’s start with your event results for the weekend:

And now… for the happenings are and about:

Great Burghley Horses Remembered: In 1986, Murphy Himself and Ginny Elliot won Burghley. But the cross country wasn’t exactly a round to remember. Murphy ran off numerous times with Ginny and she recalls at some points they were just completely out of control. After a few more events, she handed the ride over to Ian Stark. Murphy and Ian went on to win the WEG in 1990 and was second at Badminton the year after. [Murphy Himself]
Doug Payne was happy with his test but not happy with the score board [DPEquestrian]
A herd of horses has tested positive for EIA in Arkansas:
At present the infection seems to be isolated to the single herd. The owner of the herd does not show horses nor do they sell any horses to any extent. The index herd has only one adjacent herd and that herd is in the process of being tested today. The source of the infection has not been found. The most recent addition to the index herd was traced back to its origin. Those horses had all negative EIA tests but were retested by Arkansas Livestock Poultry Commission personnel and all their horses were negative.” [Jurga Report]

Would You Rather?

Last year when I was making one of those horrible road trips with horses (the kind where after 18 hours you start to hallucinate) my kind friend (RAP) called to keep me company. Her method? A book of “would you rather” questions. So when John came to me with the idea of doing an Eventing Nation “would you rather” series, I jumped on the idea. Over the next few weeks, there will be several eventing related “would you rather” polls. So, put on your thinking caps, make your choice, and let the discussions begin!
So to get things started off, here is what looks to be a simple question. But the more people I ask, the more the answers vary. While Olympic medals are the highest achievement to those in the athletic world, are they to those in the eventing world? Some say winning a CCI**** would be a bigger accomplishment. What are your thoughts Eventing Nation?

Go eventing.

Clark Johnstone’s Monday News and Notes from ECOGOLD

Samantha Clark photo
Good morning Eventing Nation! Hopefully everyone is feeling rested after the weekend. This is a really big week on the eventing front. Richland Park HT takes place this week/weekend. This will serve as the final selection trial for the US Pan American Games team. Many riders will be traveling early on in the week to make it to Michigan in time to rest and get ready to compete. Lucky for us, John will be on hand at Richland to keep everyone up to date on the most current happenings. There should be plenty of excitement. Stay tuned.
Over in Germany, the Europeans are gearing up for their championships. Luhmuhlen will play host to one of the most exciting competitions of this year- The European Championships. There are some serious top athletes headed to Germany. But, let’s not forget the green bean, Laura Collett, who is making her debut on the British Senior Squad. We will have more on the European Championships as the week unfolds.

On to the news, notes, and not so random happenings…

Well, Clark Johnstone has done it. He has won the World Cup Series. Johnstone finished four points ahead of friend, Chris Burton. Johnstone was part of the bronze medal team in Kentucky last fall but considers this his biggest win. Winning the series earned him a nice 30,000Euro. [World Cup Winner]

Have any of you ever watched the show Hoarders? Well for those who haven’t, it is terrifying. Hoarding is a horrible disorder. The sad thing about hoarding is that not all the collected items are lifeless. Sixty-four animals (including 10 horses and 40 cats) have been collecting by Michigan authorities. The animals were kept in unsanitary conditions and were not receiving proper medical care (or just care in general…). The case began when authorities started receiving complaints and concerns about the animals well being. The animals have all been moved to shelters. [Don’t hoard]

The British Young Rider team has won team gold in Scotland. Unfortunately, a stop on the cross country dropped overnight leader, Dani Evans out of a medal position. Willa Newton however, only added 2.4 time penalties and a clean show jumping to finish in the silver medal position. Tom McEwen also had a clean show jumping to finish fourth. [British Eventing]

Carl Hester has won a second silver medal. Despite his mount feeling quiet tired, they were able to pull of a nice performance to clinch the second place position. Hester says he was happy with his ride. He had never ridden the test (in competition, I assume) but it went off really well with each movement falling into the correct lyrical spot. Hester has had a really successful championship and I am sure we will see many more exciting things from him and Uthopia. [Second Silver]

William Fox-Pitt, Nicola Wilson, and Polly Stockton all had a winning weekend at Blair Castle. Could these be a good sign for their week to come in Germany? I hope so. [Winner, winner, chicken dinner]

Fourteen year old Lillie Keenan has had a big win. As the youngest competitor in the USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals, many might not of thought she would finish where she did. After a mistake on her first horse, she came back on her second for a flawless round. Keenan took the lead ahead of many of the country’s top hunter riders. Most of these riders are ten years her superior. Age didn’t matter, the victory was all for Keenan. [Derby Winner]

The German team and team order has been selected for the European Championships. [Germany]

Colleen and Shiraz have finally made it to England. After what sounds like a long journey, they are finally settled in the Ann Taylor’s beautiful farm. Shiraz seems to be in fine form and feeling quiet full of himself. Hopefully there are no pheasants at Burghley! [Colleen and Shiraz]

Do any of you live in London? Want to offer your place as a location for others to stay? Blair Castle’s Friday News and Notes from FLAIR

truckburghley.jpg

Photo via Blair Castle

Just a few months ago, Rolex Kentucky and Badminton were the source of nerves for many riders. This week? Burghley and Blenheim. With several of our top riders in England, we should be nervous too. Not nervous with fear, but nervous with excitement. The US has some very capable riders over there. Lets hope they can show England and the rest of Europe just what kind of talent we’ve got.
I have to admit, despite the Burghley course walk video being out for a few days now, I hadn’t watch it. Then, while making guacamole, I decided I needed some entertainment. Burghley course walk it was. At fence two, with knife in hand, I stop “cooking.” Burghley, and any other four star, is nothing to joke about. But this year, Mark Philips has stepped it up. If I were to imagine a 5*, this would be it. I cannot wait to see every fence jumped. This is going to be a Burghley to remember.
Blenheim has put out a statement saying that they have received over 200 entries. They will be accepting 110 entries in the CCI*** and 65 in the 8 and 9 year old CIC***. The chosen entries will be based on points in the HSBC series over the current year and two preceding years. Any unqualified entry will not be accepted and a wait list will be kept. [200 entries?!?!?!]
Now, leaving the future and heading to the present.
Here are the live scores for the weekend events that are currently available:

Caber Farm HT starts today [Live Scores]
The Event at Goose Downs starts today [Live Scores]

Erie Hunt and Saddle Club HT starts on Saturday [Times/Scores]

Difficult Run, Huntington Farm, and Great Vista are all running this weekend as well so stay tuned for updates on those events.

Boyd and Silva have been busy. During Heath Ryan’s 14 day trip to the states, he stopped at True Prospect Farm to do a little teaching. Boyd rode his Pan Am hopeful, Cold Harbor. Heath hopped on the horse and gave Boyd a little talk about needing to ride him better. Heath was Boyd’s first coach and mentor. Always nice for a familiar yet fresh perspective. [Heath and Boyd]
But it was just Boyd who was getting some extra help lately, Silva was too. Silva rode Faye Woolf’s, Aesthete with Steffen Peters. Silva said Peters was spot on in everything he said and “Stately” was a real good boy. Silva also shares what a fantastic owner Faye is. Faye is one of the nicest people out there and her love and passion for eventing, and now dressage, are what help to make the sports better. [Steffen and Silva]
And sticking with the Martin love… Boyd has a new mount! Long time owner and supporter, Anne Hennessey, has purchased an exciting new prospect for Boyd to ride. According to Boyd, New Cadet moves like Totilas and jumps like Sapphire. [New Cadet]
The Horse Radio Network is excited to announce it’s new segment with the USEA. Each month, the USEA will give a news update on the Eventing Radio Show. The British have made history. For the first time in the 25-year history of the FEI European Dressage Championships, Great Britain has taken the gold medal. Carl Hester had a dream performance producing a 82.56 on his stallion, Uthopia. This team result is going to give other European countries something to worry about come 2012. An excited Hester stated, “Some of us have seen Great Britain through the dark days- 20 years ago this would never have seemed possible- so it’s a truly historic moment for us, and London should be a sell-out now!”  Germany took the silver medal and The Netherlands took bronze. Does this leave you asking, Totalis who? [Historic medal]

I wonder if this cool girl is getting nervous for her big debut on the senior squad.

Good morning Eventing Nation! Well hump day has passed and we are now on the fast. down hill roll to the weekend. With Richland Park only a week away, many riders are gearing up for the trek to Michigan. This weekend will be spent doing last minute preparations and packing trailers for the journey.
Across the very swim-able pond, the European Young Rider Championships are under way. Young Riders in Europe are really luck because they get to go to some really awesome places for their competition. This year the have crossed into Scotland. The British team has been announced and riders will be getting their dressage on today. [British YR team]
I am excited to announce that EN will be hosting a new series shortly. While I can’t tell you what exactly the series is, I can tell you it will be great fun. Get ready for some good discussions and interesting thinking processes. Stay tuned.
There are six events happening this weekend. Here is your chance to get a head start on results stalking:

The  Professional Horseman’s Council is always hard at work. Recently, they have decided to revise a rule that already existed. This rule revising is for an update on rider reps. As it has been, rider rep’s at events were asked when they arrived if they were willing to be a rider rep. Naturally, all riders will say yes. But with their busy schedules of walking courses, helping students, and riding their own horses, were they really able to “be” a rider rep? The PHC came to the conclusion that the rider rep needs to have more pressure put on them while not causing the officials or secretary and more pressure. The rider reps will now be required to find and fill out paper work. Also, there will be a course walk with the officials. Questions have been raised, but the PHC wants to put out this message:
We worked exceptionally hard on this program with as many different groups as we could.  The rule was revised no less than 12 times.  It truly was a collaborative effort.  Add to the above due diligence the rule change process that was followed and it is hard to believe anyone can be surprised this rule will be coming into effect next year.  Those who claim that they had no idea this rule was changed have simply not been paying attention.  We must never forget that we are all in this sport because of our love of horses.  It is this common passion that brings us all together.  The riders have shown that they are willing to step up and take on more responsibility at the competitions.  Now we are asking for our officials to respect our request and allow us the opportunity to make this rule work.  We all have so much to gain by increasing our communication with each other. [PHC]

While European YR’s are competing this week, next week plays host to the Senior European Championships. Unfortunately, Polly Stockton has had to withdraw her mount, Westwood Poser, off the list. Polly will replace him with Regulus. The squad has been named but team members and individuals will be picked after the first trot up. [Senior Squad]

PRO Blog: Bittersweet Ending

Lauren Shannon is having a rough lead up to Burghley. Touch wood, the horse is great. It is her arm that seems to be the problem. After fracturing it two weeks ago, she is in a cast. Despite the fracture, Lauren is lightly schooling her Burghley mount. The cast is scheduled to come off next Thursday. This will give her a little more time in the tack. Her dog, who was jealous of all the attention on the fractured arm has decided to have a little mishap of his own. Both Lauren and the dog are sorted and Burghley bound. [Lauren Shannon]

Best of Blogs: Starfire Eventing

The Brits are always put near the top of the list of favorites to win a championship. And for the Senior Europeans, it is no different. With a lot of solid 4star pairs, they are bound to have a good performance.  But would it have been smarter to leave horses like Opposition Buzz and Jakata off the list? Perhaps save them for the Olympics. Maybe they should have given another newcomer a chance. It all makes for good discussion. [Europeans]

Clark Johnstone has had one heck of a year. And now he is on the verge of making Kiwi history. Clark is looking in fine form to become the first ever kiwi to win the World Cup series. Clark is leading the series ahead of Chris Burton by 10 points. [World Cup]

Volunteer Tuesday News and Notes from Pennfield

ENjump.jpg

Just because EN karma is always a good thing…
Well the week is officially underway. Here at the EN headquarters things are finally starting to cool off and rain has visited the ground. Hopefully where ever you are today, the weather is being some what nice to you. It’s a quiet week here at EN on the event reporting scene but that doesn’t mean we slow down. However, it does give me an excuse to share some random facts with you that have nothing to do with anything. So to start your Tuesday off, enjoy these completely random facts…
1. There are no ants in Iceland, Antarctica or Greenland.
2. City dwellers have longer, thicker and denser nose hairs than country folks do.
3. Farmers in England are required by law to give their pigs toys.
4. All 13 minerals necessary for human life can be found in alcohol beverages.
5. Flies are deaf (yes this means you can stop yelling at them every time they land on your horses rump).
Now that you are 5 facts smarter, you may continue on to the news and notes if you dare…
As we all know, being mentally prepared for an event is just as important as physical preparation. Often times it seems that many riders, across all levels, lose their focus at events. Whether it is nerves or distractions, it is never good. Sommer Christie, a Mental Performance Consultant, recently gave a clinic at a saddle shop in Canada. Her man idea was the circle of attention. In the center of the circle you have the ideal focus- you and the task at hand. As you move outside the circle, you have distractions that pull you away. Sommer worked with participants on identifying the distractions and working on a “distraction control plan.” [Get focused]
Katherine Erickson has done a nice blog on why it is great to volunteer. Of course, we all know that no event, clinic, or local show can run without the hard work of dedicated volunteers. Katherine lists 10 reasons it is a great idea to be a volunteer. A few of those reasons include- great food, great excuse to horse-gawk, judges are nice, free food, good hand writing practice, and a great learning experience. To learn more about why you should volunteer, check out Katherine’s blog. [Great reasons to volunteer]
Great Britain’s Young Rider team as arrived at Blair Castle (Scotland) and is getting ready for the start of their competition. [GB YR’s]
Boyd Martin’s mentor, Heath Ryan, is coming to the US to do a series of clinics. There is still time to sign up for this weekend’s clinic in Maryland. [Heath Ryan]
Sinead Halpin is Burghley ready! After a great weekend at Hartpury, Sinead is feeling more confident for her upcoming task. While she was disappointed in her dressage (do to some minor mistakes and not a great warm up plan), she was thrilled with her cross country and happy with her show jumping. Sinead shares with us that her nerves were out in full force for the cross country but she committed to a plan and got it done. Now, hold things together for a little longer and Burghley it will be! Thank goodness for Burghley TV allowing us to hopefully ride at Burghley with all the US riders.  [Sinead Halpin]
As always, if you need a good laugh, read Meg’s blog. I will not do any paraphrasing as it is worth the read. She is having far too much fun in England. [Ladies and gentlemen, Meg Kep]
Pennfield has a new dealer in Lomita, California- Lomita Feed. If you are in the area be sure to check out Lomita Feed and, as always, go to the Pennfield dealer search to find a dealer near you. In addition to Lomita Feed, there are five new farm supply stores around California as well.
Entries haven’t been open long for Blenheim HT but already there is a great list of riders. Of course, the likes of William Fox-Pitt and Andrew Nicholson will be on hand. Should be a great competition.  [Blenheim]
Not cool move of the day: Former Italian eventer, Andrea Verdina, has been banned from driving for 12 months following a drunk driving charge. Andrea claims he went to a hunt ball, planned to share a taxi, but his girlfriend got sick so he drove her. Bad move. Bad move. Let this be a reminder to all, if you plan to drive, plan to sip the Kool-Aide. [Fail]
Show jumping time…
Lastly, I want to give a huge shout out to John Michael Durr. JM had a big win at Woodside this past weekend (as John talked about) but I should also note he won the Advanced there last year. Well done JM.
Have a great day EN. Back at you soon. Go Eventing.

Sinead’s Monday News and Notes from ECOGOLD

sineadtrailer2.jpg

As Burghley draws closer, horses and riders are out for their final prep runs. This past weekend at Hartpury, Sinead Halpin gave Tate a nice run for his preparation. The CIC*** was a large division and Sinead and Tate found themselves holding down 11th place. With one down in the show jumping and only eight time penalties cross country, Sinead will be feeling confident in her lead up to Burghley. Now it’s time for all the never ending “fine tuning.”
Will Coleman was also competing. He retired on the cross country. However, rumor has it he was happy with his ride so I am guessing he pulled up on purpose. Several sources say the ground was hard. Will knows his horse best so it is quite possible he jumped a few fences to have a little prep and then pulled up before too much wear and tear. Julian Stiller was also there. After a bit of a disappointing show jumping, she had a good cross country.
Stay tuned to EN as we creep closer and closer to the fall season. Burghley is just around the corner as well as many other events. Hopefully that means colder weather is too! [Hartpury Results]
In case you missed your friends Facebook updates about their weekend events…

Kitty King was out at Hartpury in her final run before Burghley. After scoring a 48 in the indoor ring, Kitty was little disappointed. She felt as though High Havoc lacked his normal big expression. However, she did have a lovely double clear show jumping and clean cross country to finish 3rd in the CIC***. On to Burghley for her as well. [Kitty King]
Andrew Nicholson pulled an impressive win as well. He will be a serious man to watch at Burghley. No surprise though.
As you saw in Ali’s Otter Creek update, Julie Wolfert had a good weekend at Otter. With two horses in the Intermediate and one lower level horse, she was busy, busy. However, despite her busy weekend, Julie was still able to cheer on her brother (from a distance) as he went 2 for 2 in field goals and scored an extra point in the Cleveland Browns football game Saturday night (pre-season). The Wolfert family is one seriously athletic family and I wish Julie the best of luck at Richland! Go Browns.
Zara Philips said she finds it a little weird adjusting to married life. Outside of the sporting world she is called Mrs. Tindall which is taking some adjusting to. Zara also shares that while she would love to have children, she will encourage them to pick up a different sport. She admits that she doesn’t enjoy Eventing during January and hopes that her kids will do a sport that involves less mud and outdoors. Should be interesting to see what happens. [Zara Jokes]
We can always use ways to make our barns safer. And while most of us probably just assume our barn is safe, it is never a bad idea to double check. The Horse has put out a nice list of tips for helping you make sure your barn is safe and lowering your potential hazard level. The article helps you to fix things like crossed wires or where to put up your hay. We can never be too safe. Check these tips out and then head into that barn for some double checking. [Quick Tips]
It’s getting time for the annual Burghley course walk. As always, there are some seriously intimidating fences. In case you missed it in the Sunday Links post take a walk around. And if you’ve already walked once, walk again. I hear the more you walk, the smaller they look. [Burghley Course Walk]
Here from the big guns as they talk about the build up to Burghley (from 2010).

Settle in to your seats folks. The fall season is looming closer. And with the fall comes, cold weather, football, and a few really awesome horse trials! Go Eventing.

Sit, Stay and your Friday News and Notes from FLAIR

One of my favorite photos, taken by one of my favorite humans
There are a lot of pretty cool things about horse people. One of my favorite things about horse people is the general love for dogs. You never go to a farm, clinic or event without seeing dogs. I also love how horse people will do crazy things for their dogs. I am one of those people. Yes, my dog has fall, winter and spring blankets. Yes, he has a different collar for every season. Yes, I have spent the night cuddled with him in his dog bed. No, I am not actually crazy. Most of us will do anything for our dogs. But at some point we must draw the line.
Summer camp was always fun growing up. But does your dog need to go? Even more important, are you going to take your dog for an extensive interview? What about playtime to see if your dog is a fit for camp? Well, just check out Camp Bow Wow. At Camp Bow Wow, each camper must fill out an extensive application, be interviewed in great detail, and then pass a playtime test. This must be one fun camp. For those of you who have “children” attending this camp, I admire your ability to really treat your dog like a child. I think I will just stick to summer horse shows serving as my diggity dog’s summer camp experiences. [Just in case you want your dog to go to camp]
Enough ramblings about dogs going to camp…

Don’t get excited. You are NOT going to be a ring steward at the Olympics. For years, internet scamming has been wildly out of control. The Olympics are clearly a great target for scamers. In their latest efforts, emails have been sent with a link saying you have been selected to be a ring steward at the equestrian venue. How cool, right?! Wrong. You are in trouble if you click or call. Your money will be taken and disappear into thin air. So please people, if you get one of these emails, don’t be foolish. [Scam, scam, scam]
Red Hills is seeking corporate sponsors [go here]
We all need a calendar in our lives. How else will one organize the day or show up in the right place at the right time? Well, here is what you need! The 2012 Riders Reveled calendar is a great way to keep track of your days. Or maybe lose track of your mind? Either way, this calendar supports a great cause (Spinal research in honor of Claire Lomas). If you happen to be at Burghley, you will be in great shape to get one. For others, check out the website for more information. [Riders Reveled]
There has been a change in the German team for the European Championships. Both Kai Ruder and Marina Kohncke have withdrawn their mounts. [Germany]
Speaking of the Europeans, EN favorite Laura Collett had a fall in her final prep run. No worries, no injuries. She will be pushing on for the Europeans and putting this fall behind her.
A German horse recently had an unfortunate situation. It is never good to be stuck, but getting stuck in a tire? Even worse. It is thought that Smila (a horse) was grazing in the tire when she slipped and got stuck. Luckily a fireman was on scene quickly to set her free. [Oops]
Speaking of horses in bad situations…Shallimah found himself in quiet a bad situation approximately 800 meters off shore. After being spooked by a wave, he lost his rider and headed for more waves. A local cyclist saw the trouble and called for help. The rescue squad was on scene in 15 minutes. After attaching a line to his bridle, and careful steering of the boat, Shallimah was guided back to shore and reunited with her owner. [Out for a swim]
As we all know, grooms are one of the most important parts of a successful operation. I love hearing their stories- the good and the bad. To be a good groom, you must be insanely OCD, strangely calm, and able to not just do two things at once, but thirty things at once. On The Line has a wonderful blog post about top groom Liv Gude. Liv has worked for many top riders. Here she shares more with us about being a top groom. [Grooms Unite]

One blog that is always fun to read: Golightly Sport Horses. Funny, light hearted, and just plain enjoyable. This time there are great photos from a good weekend at Maryland HT. Check it out! [Photo montage]

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! Stay cool and stay tuned. Go Eventing.
