Monday News and Notes from Success Equestrian

The lens-flare makes it look like I know what I'm doing. The lens-flare makes it look like I know what I'm doing.

As a horse-person I always get a kick out of Mondays on Facebook.  All of my non-horsey friends post things like “Oh no, it’s Monday again! Boo!” or “I could use one more weekend day!” while my horsey friends post things like “Such a fun but exhausting weekend, actually kind of glad to be back at work!” After two days with Hawley Bennett at Dragonfire, I’m certainly feeling the exhausted-and-happy-to-be-back-at-the-office sentiment.  I’m sure the excitement of being back at work will wear off by lunchtime. Photos and a clinic-report later this week.  Stay-tuned!

Monday News and Notes:

We may have seen some serious world domination by Andrew Nicholson lately but Ollie Townend insists he’s on his way back to the top.  After a year plagued with injuries to his horses and himself, Ollie says he’s feeling recharged and ready to come out swinging with big plans in 2014.  [More from Yorkshire Post

You know the old saying, ‘No Hoof, No Horse’.  Farrier Andrew Reader-Smith did an interview recently and spoke of the trials and tribulations inherent in swinging a hammer as well as his competitive goals this season.  Reader-Smith is one of the top farriers in the UK and just happens to be the farrier that William Fox-Pitt uses. [More from Stuff.co.nz

I’m a giant dork and spend far too much time playing video games.  I get a kick out of most horse related video games because they’re usually very silly.  Turns out Zara Phillips will be lending her name to the online game Howrse.  Prior to stumbling on this article I hadn’t played Howrse, but after “creating an account just to check it out”, I found myself staying awake late in to the night, clicking away. [More from Hello Magazine]

When Zara Phillips isn’t helping out with Howrse, she’s off to the races.  She was spotted recently at the Heythrop Hunt Point-to-Point races cheering on some of her own racers. [More from MyDaily.co.uk]

George Morris was famously quoted as saying “You either go to the hospital or you get back on! Hospital or on!” but USEF officials are suggesting it may be time to re-think that philosophy.  Malcolm Hook, Safety Committee Chairman of the USEF has said he’d like to start working on a rule to evaluate juniors who fall off before they are cleared to resume showing.  This would come in to effect in the 2015 season. [More from NJ.com]

Things are looking awesome for Mike Tice.  Tice was recently named the Falcons’ offensive line coach and the colt he owns a share in just won the Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park.  The colt’s name is Midnight Hawk and has now earned 10 points towards qualifying for the 2014 Kentucky Derby.  Midnight Hawk is trained by Bob Baffert.  [More from NBCSports.com]

Monday Video: Someone needs to make me a pair of wings like this only instead of feathered wings, they should be bat wings.  That would be epic.

Today kicks off day two of the Hawley Bennett-Awad Clinic at Dragonfire.  I’m not going to lie, today is going to be pretty challenging considering how absurd last night was. One of the Team DF traditions is playing Rock Band whenever Hawley and Gamal are in town and we hit it hard last night.  There’s nothing quite like the silliness that comes out after a glass or two of wine.  There were duets, ensemble efforts and even some interpretive dancing.  There is also video.  I am debating whether or not sharing it is worth spending the rest of the winter without stirrups!

This Is Not A Confession

Despite being over 15 years old, I still have this saddle pad and use it semi-regularly. Despite being over 15 years old, I still have this saddle pad and use it semi-regularly.

This weekend is the Hawley Bennett clinic at Dragonfire, and as with all occasions where photographs may be taken, I found myself putting some thought into what my horse and I would wear. I am a bit obsessive about these kind of things. This train of thought eventually started spilling out of my mouth and bubbling over in to conversation with my husband, who took it in stride and nodded at all of the appropriate moments. He really did a bang-up job of making it look like he was listening to my endless droning about which shirt with which breeches and then which saddle pad while he played Borderlands 2.

While I was babbling mindlessly about the merits of one outfit versus another, I came to the realization that I have way too many saddle pads, even though I’ve sold several at tack swaps over the last few years. While I was cooking dinner, I took a mental inventory of my saddle pads and came up with 11 (which means I’ve obviously forgotten at least another half dozen that are in storage).

I have four pads that I’ve owned for at least 15 years. Two are shaped saddle pads while the other two are square — green plaid and black with white binding. I have a waffle-weave pad that is white with black binding that I picked up at some point in the last three years, but can’t recall where or when. I have a Hawaiian print pad that was a gift from my mother, as well as three monogrammed pads that are part of my everyday collection. A fourth monogrammed pad lives in my “I-can-still-call-this-show-equipment-until-I-need-an-excuse-to-go-shopping-again” pile. Finally, I have one more white with black piping pad.

That pad happened to be an emergency Erin Freakout purchase because due to some weight loss, my black coat that I’d planned to wear all weekend felt a little big and boxy in dressage, and I couldn’t stand to wear it for Stadium.  This meant I’d end up wearing my better fitting navy coat, but because a black pad with a navy coat looks weird when you’re a matchaholic, it also meant I had to run by the tack truck and grab a white pad. They didn’t have any white-with-white piping, so I cringed and accepted the fact that at a distance navy and black can look pretty similar when you’re talking about piping.

Despite all of these saddle pad options, I realized that I will most likely buy another pad when I swing by the tack store before the clinic because I’ve already begun the process of self-sabotage. I realistically don’t have time to make a clandestine laundromat run, and showing up with a dirty pad for a clinic is just rude. Also, I’m hopelessly addicted to saddle pads, and a clinic is a much better excuse for saddle pad number 12 than admitting there’s a problem.

Yep, I'm certainly going to have a stop or two at this after all the work I put in to it. It is all but guaranteed. Yep, I'm certainly going to have a stop or two at this after all the work I put in to it. It is all but guaranteed.

Sometimes you have a weekend so great that you don’t really mind going back to work on Monday.  I was fortunate to have one of those this past weekend.  Sunday morning was spent galloping around like an idiot on my pony followed by an afternoon of painting jumps.  There’s something magical that happens when the paint comes out.  It’s hard to have a bad day when it’s spent getting your art on.  Hopefully this work week will let me recover enough so that I can be ready for Hawley Bennett’s clinic at Dragonfire this weekend!

Oregon has joined the list of states that have banned horse-tripping.  The new law prohibiting horse-tripping went in to effect with the new year.  [More Here]

A horse was rescued after falling through a snow-covered tarp in to a swimming pool in Pennsylvania. The horse was tangled in the tarp and stuck in the icy waters for over an hour.  The attending vet cut the horse free of the tarp which allowed him to walk up the steps and out of the pool.  Other than being cold and some minor cuts to his fetlocks the horse was no worse for the wear. Three people have been arrested in Kentucky in connection with shooting and killing several horses.  All four horses that were reported shot either died immediately or had to be euthanized.  Two of the three individuals arrested have confessed to the crime. [More Here]

A severed horse head was found in the Miami-Dade area.  There is some suspicion that the horse was butchered alive for Santeria.  While it is legal for Santeria worshippers to kill animals for religious sacrifices it is not legal for them to do so in areas not zoned for slaughter.  Miami-Dade police are said to be investigating. Be warned, there are some fairly unsettling images at the link. [More Here]

New Jersey stable owners may soon find themselves out from under a tax-burden that many didn’t even know existed until recently.  In 2006, state-legislation mandated sales tax on storage facilities.  This category was stretched to include horse-stalls.  Many stable owners are stuck paying back taxes and penalties.  State Assemblyman Ron Dancer has introduced a bill in the state Legislature that may ease some of the burden on stable owners. [More Here]

I love painting jumps!

I almost feel guilty about our gorgeous weather here in California after seeing the colossal amounts of snow and frigid temperatures that everyone else seems to be enduring.  Today is supposed to be another picture perfect day and after a lesson I have a date with several gallons of paint.  Painting jumps is one of my favorite at-the-barn activities.  I will confess though that I’m always a little worried that I’ll come up with a REALLY spooky design and end up eating some dirt courtesy of my artistic streak.

RIP Astro

Astro at Rebecca Farm in 2013 Astro at Rebecca Farm in 2013

Sad news from California this morning.  Last night Kristi Nunnink’s Astro lost his fight with a very aggressive form of EPM.

Kristi wrote the following on Facebook regarding the loss of Astro:

“Astro was such an amazing horse who helped me so much with my riding. Randy and I are so thankful to have had him in our life. He was such an amazing horse. He was the rare combination of super athlete and lovely old soul. He was actually perfect. Thank you so much everyone for your support during this stressful and heartbreaking time.”

The entire EN team sends our condolences to Kristi, Randy and Astro’s other connections.

January PSA: Check Your Tack and Your Trailer!

This probably isn't road worthy...

The new year provides a fresh start and a clear marker on the calendar to knock out all of those things we keep putting off.  Last month we reminded you to check your helmet’s expiration date and replace it if it had expired.  This month, we’re highlighting some additional considerations for your to-do list.

Tack Check: This month set aside some time to thoroughly inspect all of your tack and give it a deep clean.  This includes even the things that aren’t in daily use.  Anything that has loose or rotted stitching, deep cracks, or has frayed needs to be repaired or tossed.  As quiet and therapeutic as a night in front of the TV with all of your leather goods can be, consider making a night of it with your barn buddies.  Just add some wine, cheese, fruit and a few designated drivers and you’ve got a party in the making!

I am particularly intense about girths and have a vaguely defined replacement policy for myself.  Essentially, if I can’t remember when and where I purchased it, or I know it to be older than I am, it is time to replace it. This all comes after hearing a tale from a friend about a nasty fall she had when the elastic on her girth popped over the top of a jump. Yes, I’m a bit paranoid.  I also like to have an excuse to go shopping.

Hauling Check: Even if you don’t intend to be on the road much until spring, both your hauling vehicle and the trailer could probably use a once over.  Having the tires rotated and the floor examined now can help spare you some stress before the first event of the season. Take some time now to reorganize the tack-room, making sure that you’ve got only the essentials in there.  An extra halter and lead rope is a great thing to have but all of your score sheets for the last six seasons’ worth of Dressage tests are probably not so vital.

Ridiculous Predictions for 2014, The Year of The Horse

Chinese New Year is not until the end of January, which means it’s a fine excuse to party all month long.  This year is a very special Year of The Horse as the element paired with the horse this year is Wood.  Wood is associated with the color green, making 2014 the Year of the Green Horse.

Perhaps this means that this is the year to buy a prospect and bring it up through the levels.  It could also mean that this is the year that some of the recent FEH and YEH graduates really start to come in to their own.

Now, I am in no way a psychic or an astrologer, but here are my predictions for the coming year:

Another US rider will acquire the ride on a top European horse. Allison Springer picked up the ride on Lionheart in November.  My cosmic rays, spidey sense and wishful thinking tells me we may see more of this in 2014.

Much like 2013, Show Jumping will be incredibly difficult at Rolex. I predict it will be so tough that we will again see five or less clear rounds.  I also predict that we may see some relative unknowns in the top 10 because of this.

Much like 2013, the EN Tailgaiting Party at Rolex will be amazing. I predict that I will party a little too hard and make a fool of myself.  This is probably my most reliable prediction.

2014 will mark the rise of a new Thoroughbred super sire. The last Year of The Wood Horse was 1954.  1954 was when Nasrullah’s first American foal crop began running.  This included horses like Nashua.  Granted, Nasrullah was an import, but we are well overdue for a superstar sire.

There you have it.  I am confident that 2014 will be an amazing year, even if my predictions don’t hold any water.  I hope you are excited as well.  Do you have any predictions for 2014, EN?

Ugh, good morning EN.  I hope you are feeling better than I am.  I have officially crossed over from “sick enough to call in to work” to “sick enough to skip going to the barn as well”.  I’m sure you all know exactly what that feels like.  I will undoubtedly watch a bunch of terrible movies on Netflix today while eyeing the weekend’s photos from the  Eventing 18 clinic on Facebook.  I might even daydream about going on a hack in a DayQuil haze.  I hope your plans are more exciting than mine!

The removal of a helmet has cost Brazilian rider Carlos Ribas his win in a six-bar competition.  Ribas and Pelvin Z cleared a 2.05 meter fence to clinch the win.  After clearing the fence, Ribas removed his helmet and threw it in to the air.  He then jumped two additional fences.  This is what caused the FEI to eliminate him from the final round causing him to drop to fourth place.  [More from NoelleFloyd.com]

Endurance is in the spotlight again after an Ecuadorian rider received a formal warning after the horse she was assigned to ride in an FEI-sanctioned event tested positive for bute and flunixin. Ah yes, the traditional holiday cold.  I was silly to think I’d managed to avoid catching it this year. Instead of being out at the barn this morning, I’m sitting here bundled up in a blanket, nursing a mug of chicken soup on the final Sunday of 2013.  I’m amazed at how fast the year has blown by.  It feels like summer was just giving way to fall a week or two ago.  I suppose it’s time to start preparing for an early start to 2014’s show-season and putting some thought to all of those New Years resolutions that I undoubtedly will fail to keep.

Start Box Jams: The Holiday Edition

Happy Holidays! Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays, EN!  It’s that time of year where favorite songs resurface to help make spirits bright.  Hopefully these tunes will fill you with the holiday spirit!

Trans-Siberian Orchestra – Christmas Eve/Sarajevo
There are many classics out there, but for me, this one is the crown jewel of Christmas songs.  Every year just after Thanksgiving TSO rolls through on their annual holiday tour and this song is featured heavily in the radio ads for the concert.  This song always flips a switch in my mind that makes it Christmas time, even if it’s a stunningly beautiful 65 degrees out with no rain in the forecast for weeks.

Bing Crosby and David Bowie – The Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth
Bing Crosby has one of those voices that is synonymous with Christmas.  David Bowie is synonymous with awesome.   This video is classic Christmas awesome.  The little-intro clip where they pretend not to know each other makes me smile even if it is a bit saccharine. As an added bonus, Will Ferrell and John C Reilly did a shot-for-shot spoof on this three years ago and it is kind of amusing.

Run-DMC – Christmas In Hollis
Christmas in Hollis is one of my favorite holiday songs.  It would stand on it’s own as a noveaux-classique Christmas song but it also has the added bonus of being featured in Die Hard which forms an integral piece of the debate as to whether or not Die Hard can be counted as a Christmas Movie. (Yes, it can.  Just ask any of your male friends.)

Classic Holiday EN: Holiday Horse Cookies Recipe

I’m not much of a Martha Stewart or June Cleaver, but I’ll admit that I look forward to baking at the holidays.  I rather enjoy having a convenient excuse to eat cookie-dough and make the occasional obscenely shaped sugar cookie. Since I’m already in the kitchen, it’s become tradition to knock out some horse-treats as well.  Here’s a recipe we shared in 2011! [For The Eventer Who Has Everything: Holiday Horse Cookies!]

The holidays are drawing near (only three days until Santa!), and if you’re anything like me then you’re looking around with a panic stricken expression, wondering where the time went! Wasn’t it only yesterday that we were deal hunting on Black Friday??

Eventing communities are often like families, so it’s no surprise that barns and associations everywhere this season are participating in festive gatherings and gift exchanges. But what can you possibly buy an eventer that they don’t already have out of necessity? And worse, what if you’re only just now realizing that you’ve forgotten that most important loved one?…. Your Faithful Horse!

While we might assume that having a warm stall, blankets, feed twice a day, and a grassy paddock should be gift enough, I think we all know that horses don’t quite see things the same way. They cart us around a series of long cross country courses for half the year, the least we can do is show our gratitude!

Fortunately, there is a solution to these holiday woes that is both easy, fun, and a real barn-crowd pleaser! Make your own special Holiday Horse Cookies!

I’ve had the benefit of trying my hand at a few of these homemade treats through the years, some with great success and some… not so much. Below is a list of homemade treats that I’ve found the best received by picky OTTBs and hungry equestrian friends alike!

Delicious Oat and Carrot Horse Cookies! (Photo courtesy of Bijou)

Oat & Carrot Christmas Cookies

(Recipe Originally by Bijou)

1.5 Cups of Oats

2 Whole Carrots

.5 Cups of Molasses

2 TBS of Water

  1. Preheat Oven to 350 degrees
  2. Run the Oats and Carrots through a food processor to make into a fine, flour like meal
  3. Combine in bowl with Molasses, sprinkle in water until moist and mix well
  4. Form small balls of the mixture, size based on the size of the cookie you want (I try to keep my no larger than a spoonful)
  5. Place the balls on an ungreased baking sheet, squashing them slightly flat as you go.
  6. Bake in oven for approx. 25 minutes, or until the treats have dried out to your preference. 25 minutes should provide a dry, crunchy treat.
  7. Wait to cool, serve to willing animals and people!

What I like about this recipe is that it uses no enriched flour, no corn syrup, and no sugar. It’s all natural!

Apple & Flax Horse Cookies

1 Cup Sweet Feed

2 – 3 Cups Wheat Bran

1 Cup Flax Seed

1 TSP Salt

4 Large Apples, Shredded

1 Cup Molasses

.5 Cup Brown Sugar

1 Cup Unsweetened Applesauce

  1. Mix molasses, brown sugar, apples and applesauce in bowl.
  2. Mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl.
  3. Gradually combine wet and dry ingredients together, only using enough of the wet ingredients to make a thick dough. Add more bran if necessary.
  4. Line cookie sheet with foil and spray with oil.
  5. Drop batter onto cookie sheet in tablespoon amounts. Flatten with a fork.
  6. Bake slowly at 300° F. for 1 hour, turn cookies over and continue to bake for another 45 minutes until thoroughly dried.
  7. Reduce heat if cookies begin to brown excessively or to burn.

I like these because of the Bran and Flax in the cookie, and because horses tend to like the apply flavor! (I may have tasted for myself as well….)

Easy No Cook “Apple Snaps”

(Recipe originally by Holistic Hoof and Horse Care)

4 Cups Bran (Wheat or otherwise)

4 Cups Unsweetened Applesauce

  1. Mix ingredients together until batter is doughy
  2. Roll out batter with rolling pin
  3. Cut into squares or shapes
  4. Allow dough to dry (takes about 24 hours) and serve

Obviously, I love these. They’re not as popular as the other cookies but they require significant less time and effort! A note, though…. If you live in a relatively humid climate, they can take a while to dry properly. I had sped up the process by putting the oven at it’s lowest setting and placing them on the center rack for about fifteen minutes.

Peppermint Patties

1/3 Cup Oats
1/3 Cup Grain (plain)
1/3 Cup Molasses
1/3 Cup Flour
Peppermints

  1. Preheat Oven to 350 Degrees
  2. If you prefer, use food processor to chop Oats and Grain into a finer texture
  3. Mix together all ingredients except for peppermints.
  4. Form cookies using spoon/scoop/hands and place on a lined cookie sheet
  5. Take a peppermint and place it in the middle of each ball of the cookie dough, pressing down to flatten slightly.
  6. Bake for 21 minutes or until golden brown. May need to let them dry out.
A real Horsie Favorite! The Peppermint adds just enough allure for the finicky eater.

Oat’n’Apple Chewies

(Recipe originally by Moniteau Saddle Club)

1.5 Cups Unsweetened Applesauce

1 Cup Oat Bran Cereal or Ground Oatmeal

.5 Cup All Purpose Flour (I prefer Wheat flour)

  1. Preheat Oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Mix all ingrediants together until consistency is that of thick batter
  3. Oil/grease a 9 inch X 9 inch square cake pan (metal)
  4. Spread batter evenly in cake pan
  5. Bake for 20 – 30 minutes. The batter will shrink away from the edges of the cake pan, and be firm to the touch.
  6. Slice into squares while still warm. These chewies will not dry out and should be refrigerated

And Below is a new addition to my Recipe Box, recently posted by Professional’s Choice on their website! I haven’t had a chance to test these out, so if someone would like to give them a go, let me know how it works out!

Oat Molasses Cookies look good enough to eat! (Photo Courtesy Professional’s Choice )

Oat Molasses Cookies

(Recipe originally by Grullo Quarter Horses, via Professional’s Choice)

2 Cups Dry Oatmeal

.5 Cup Grated Carrots

3 TBS Molasses

.5 Cup Brown Sugar

Water to preference

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Combine all Ingredients
  3. Add enough water to make a soft dough, Stirring well
  4. Form cookie balls
  5. Bake for 8 minutes or until golden brown
I hope everyone gets a chance to try out these great recipes, and that this holiday season is filled with love, laughter, and horses!
Go Eventing!

Start Box Jams: The Grinch Edition

The holidays are here in full force and it can get overwhelming.  Even the most enthusiastic among us can get a little frazzled and find themselves in need of a little tongue-in-cheek humor.  If you’re feeling not-so-festive and need the extra oompf to help you wrap those last few presents or a little grinchy knowing you’ll spend yet another year at the kids table even though you’re thirty-three, we’ve got you covered.

Weezer – We Wish You A Merry Christmas
This song is the best song for caroling as the lyrics make it clear to the folks you are serenading that they must bring you a “cup of good cheer” before you depart.  If you are singing your demands it somehow makes it seem less like extortion and more festive. After two or three cups of good cheer, I don’t think I’ll care about sitting at the kids table anymore.

The Futureheads – Christmas Was Better In The 80’s
This song pairs jaded cynicism and angst about the Christmases of childhood-past in to a perfect package.  It’s catchy enough that you’ll find yourself humming it and murmuring the lyrics even if you didn’t experience them magical nature of Christmas in the 80’s.

Blink-182 – I Won’t Be Home For Christmas
I tend to think of my family as a loose coalition of bards, gypsies and vagabonds.  The big, family Christmas shindig with aunts, cousins and grandparents descending on a central location sort of faded from our collective priorities as “the grand-kids” got older.  Through high-school Christmas was a small, low-key affair for me and my parents. Shortly after I left for college, my parents moved to Hawaii.I remember how liberated I felt when I didn’t have an obligation to go home for the holidays.  This song came out around that time and it will always hold a special place in my heart, even if it is extra, super, mega-grinchy!

Tenacious D & Sum 41 – Things I Want
The video is absolutely terrible as it is just a picture of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, but I can forgive that.  This is the BEST Christmas song of all time.  It is absolutely absurd and far too catchy for it’s own good.  I want at least six of the things on Jack Black’s list.  I promise you will be ready for the holidays after you rock this jam.  I get the most mileage out of this song when I’m stuck in holiday traffic.  I put it on repeat, crank it loud, sing along shamelessly and play air-guitar while waiting to move up another 100 yards

Start Box Jams: The White Elephant Edition

There are some truly special songs that surface this time of year. Some of them are funny, some of them are weird and others are just plain horrible.  Much like those As Seen On TV novelties, horrible holiday songs are horrors that you just can’t look away from.

Scruffy The Elf – I’m Scruffy The Elf (The Elf With Facial Hair)
Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer is viewed by many as the all time best-bad-Christmas song, but after hearing this song I suspect we have a challenger for the title.

New Kids On The Block – Funky Funky Christmas
I was a NKOTB fan when I was a kid.  I remember setting up the VCR to record this very performance.  I spent at least an hour figuring out how to program the arcane machine, spent my own money on a blank tape and woke up early in the morning to view what I’d recorded.  I faintly remember that my mom recorded one of my horse shows on the tape shortly afterward which made me upset for about five minutes.  At first, I was stoked when I found this on YouTube.  Now I am quite embarrassed.

Star Wars: Christmas In The Stars – R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas
Putting a Christmas theme on things that are completely non-Christmas related always makes me laugh.  Add in the fact that the 1980’s were a very weird time of marketing and you get some true Christmas gems.  John Bon Jovi, singing children, R2-D2 and C3PO come together for what is an admittedly weird but very festive Christmas treasure.

Holiday Gift Ideas: Last Minute Ideas

‘Tis the season to have absolutely no idea what to get any of your friends or family, for the umpteenth year in a row. Every once in a while you find the perfect present, but especially for horsey friends, the pressure is on. Obviously you’ll be purchasing something horse-related, but does it have to be pink and have a fat pony on it? We here at Eventing Nation say NAY! That’s why this holiday season each one of our impressive staff writers is picking one unique, amazing, thoughtful and clever horsey gift to help you along during this time of stress. Happy holidays!

It’s the absolute last minute.  Seriously, why did you wait this long?  If you’re anything like me it’s simply that the time just got away from you.  It can be pretty overwhelming when you’re faced with the critical dilemma of what to get those last few people on your gift-list and know full well that even overnight shipping won’t save you. That’s where EN comes in.  Here are some last-minute gift ideas that may just save the day!

Do your friends love to go cross-country schooling? Do they spend more time at your local horse park than they do at home?  Perhaps a day-pass or year’s membership for your local horse-park is in order!  I know I always forget to renew my memberships at least one of our local horse-parks and if I was smart, I’d renew all of them right now while it’s on my mind.  The great thing about this is that not only are you supporting the community at large, but some horse parks are set up in such a way that your membership fees are tax deductible.  How awesome is that?  Fair warning, this one might be a bit tricky to pull off, but it is certainly worth calling up your local horse park to see if they can help you out.  I know I’ll be on the horn with Woodside, Fresno County Horse Park and Camelot the moment I can sneak away from the festivities!

Do you have a friend who hauls you and your horse everywhere? Being the nerd without her own trailer, I’ve got a few trailer-owning buddies who I am eternally indebted to.  Without trailer-owning friends there would be far less hijinks and far fewer adventures.  These fine friends put wear and tear on their vehicles in the name of fun.  Do yourself a favor and become the best tag-along ever and pick them up a gas gift card. We all know how expensive gas is and a free tank is sure to be appreciated.  If you want to go the extra mile you could also grab them a gift certificate for an oil change too! I look forward to it every year! I look forward to it every year!

Where did the weekend go?  I swear it was Friday night five minutes ago. I got very lucky this year and was granted a stretch of paid days off this week thru New Years, but there’s still a ton of things to do before the in-laws drop by. Then again, the A Christmas Story marathon won’t start until Christmas Eve, the weather’s great and it’s looking like a perfect day for a trail ride.  Guess that means it’s a perfect night for an all-night cleaning festival. Happy Holidays, EN!

It just keeps getting better and better for Andrew Nicholson. Nicholson has topped off 2013 with another $50k in his pocket after topping the HSBC Rankings for the year.  He won the HSBC bonus in 2012 after moving to the top of the list with a stellar performance at the London Olympics. What a way to end the year! [More from horsetalk.co.nz]

Missing Pony Alert  Tic Toc is a small grey pony that has gone missing.  He belongs to a little boy in England named Joshua Carnegie.   Joshua’s parents have offered a £6,000 reward for the safe return of their five-year-old son’s pony and some celebrities have gotten in on spreading the word via Facebook.  I hope they find him soon!  [More from Telegraph.co.uk]

Does your horse’s BFF cry for him when you head off for a hack? There is nothing more pitiful or annoying than a gelding standing in the corner of the pasture crying mournfully for his buddy.  Separation anxiety can encompass a range of behaviors from very mild to very extreme and can be quite frustrating to deal with. If you’ve got some buddies who just can’t bear to be apart, the folks over at TheHorse.com have posted some information that you might find useful!  [More from TheHorse.com]

Goodbye Hollywood Park. Hollywood Park is the second major California race track to close since 2008.  The closure of Hollywood Park is a very sad loss when it comes to horse racing history.  The 260 acre property will be turned in to a housing and retail development starting next year. One dollar from all USEA entry fees is to be used to fund equine medical research.  This initiative was announced at the USEA convention earlier this month.  The additional dollar on your entries begin showing up in January.  It is expected that approximately $40k will be raised thru this initiative. Some sad news this morning from Colorado.  Claire Davis, the 17 year old equestrian who was shot last week by a classmate at Arapahoe High School has died.  A life cut short is tragic at any time, but one cut short by violence in a season where we celebrate togetherness and goodwill towards our fellow man is especially so. The Eventing Nation staff sends our condolences to Claire’s family in this difficult time.

From the ‘It Has A Horse On It So You’ll Love It’ Files

I’ll admit it. I watch a ton more television in the winter time. When it’s too cold or too dark to ride, I often find myself curled up in a blanket in front of the television. Netflix is arguably one of the greatest inventions of the last decade and has made binging on series during winter that much easier. On top of that, we’re starting to see some straight-to-Netflix series that are actually pretty good (“Orange Is The New Black,” anyone?).

One of the upcoming straight-to-Netflix series is “BoJack Horseman,” an animated series featuring a talking horse. Your well-meaning officemates or husband will probably start trying to make you watch it because, you know, it has a horse on it. Seriously, three people have already told me about this show, and it’s not even out until the middle of 2014.

Will Arnett lends his voice to the titular equine who is a former television star that is down on his luck and trying to find his way back to the big time. The series also boasts a sidekick voiced by Aaron Paul of “Breaking Bad” fame. I’m seriously at a loss for what to expect other than that I’ll watch it at least once or twice if only for the fact that BoJack is a very fancy bay, and I’m a sucker for anything Aaron Paul is involved with.

Good Morning, EN!  I hope you had a fantastic weekend.  I’m recovering from the insanity that was Dragonfire’s Jingle Bell Academy Show as well as our White Elephant Holiday Party.  My face hurts from smiling non-stop all weekend long.  For all of you procrastinators out there, we are now less than 10 days away from Christmas.  This means it’s time to get out there and get your shopping knocked out and house cleaning on.  There’s a difference between “everyday clean” and “guests are coming clean”. I can’t be the only one who’s-laws get a little weirded out when they try to be helpful by putting glasses in the dishwasher and find themselves face to face with bits and spurs.

There are two groups of people for whom hairnets are a necessity: lunch ladies and equestrians.  Since this isn’t Lunch Lady Nation, I’m going to assume you are of the latter category.  Hairnets are typically pesky things, either getting lost, torn or utterly failing to do an adequate job of taming your fierce locks.  I know I’m not alone in the experience of piling on 2-3 hairnets in an effort to tame wild wisps of hair and then ending up with multiple annoying pressure spots from the knots pressing in to my forehead underneath my helmet.

My life changed when I found the Real Women Ride No Knot Hair Net. This may sound like an odd gift idea, but seriously, trust me.  These hairnets are the best hairnets in the world. They are heavy enough to keep my wild curls in check and so simple that I don’t have to spend fifteen minutes pinning three separate nets in to place. I’ve gone from the kid who hated hairnets to someone who wears one under my helmet on a daily basis.  Seriously, check out how easy these are to put on:

The RWR No Knot Hair Net comes in blonde, black, light brown, medium brown and dark brown.  (A note for fellow redheads, I’ve found the medium brown to be the best color choice for me.) They are priced at $9.95 and are worth absolutely every penny.  I have been known to make a special trip to the tack store for the sole purpose of buying these hairnets because they are so awesome.  I’ve converted a few friends who doubted the awesomeness of this hairnet to devoted followers.

As an added bonus, RWR has a holiday special on now.  True, it is getting down to the wire if you’re planning to order gifts online, but these hairnets are sure to be appreciated even if Santa gets them to your recipient a little late.

Happy Holidays, EN.  I plan to sleep in quite late this morning after being up all night making far more fudge than anyone ought to ever make.  I’m not going to lie, things got a little crazy.  I made some bacon fudge and a test batch of sriracha fudge. The bacon fudge is pretty awesome, but the jury is still out on the sriracha.  I think with some tweaks to the ratios, it could be a hit!  I hope you’ve got some plans for something fun today. While you are out and about, please keep a good thought out for Jennie Brannigan and Cambalda (“Ping”).  Last night, Jennie posted an update to her Facebook page indicating that Ping was at New Bolton with a case of colic.

Saturday Video: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s New Horse

Insomnia sometimes nets incredible gems. In continuing with the Arnold Schwarzenegger theme, the Governator was at the National Finals Rodeo recently and hopped aboard a toy horse for a ride. Apparently, the woman running the booth selling the toy horses egged the former Mr. Universe in to this silliness.  The description of the video says, “This weekend, I visited the National Finals Rodeo in Vegas. I’m not as ballsy as those cowboys, but the lady running this booth called my bluff when I asked if I could ride the toy horse. As always, an iPhone was watching, so wanted to share the fun with you.” Go Arnold.
