Sport Horse Nation Spotlight: Dear Santa…

In the market for a new four-legged partner? You may find your unicorn on our sister site, Sport Horse Nation. To help with the search, we’re going to feature a selection of current listings here on EN. We include the ad copy provided; click the links for videos, pricing and contact information.

… I’ve been good this year! Here are a few listings from Sport Horse Nation that I wouldn’t mind seeing under my tree.

Shanbally Fergus. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

DREAM horse for FUN eventing, hacking, hunting

2011 Irish Draft 16.2hands. Shanbally Fergus is an imported Irish Draft that has become one of our barn favorites and is sure to become one of yours.

Fergus is currently a very solid novice level event horse with plenty of ability to move up to training level this spring. He has consistently been placing in the top of his classes. Super honest and simple to jump, at home, xc schooling and events. Fergus is now very well traveled and takes it all in stride.

Fergus is lovely in the barn, super easy keeper and is happy to turn out with friends or solo. He also LOVES to go on hacks- again he is well behaved in groups and out solo. He will lead or follow.

Fergus was a side-saddle hunt horse in Ireland before coming to the states. This is the UNICORN you’ve been looking for! Located in Pennsylvania.

Cotton’s Secret. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Cottons Secret 2013 TB Gelding For Sale!

“Cotton” is a coming 7 yr old, 16.2 hand liver chestnut Thoroughbred gelding. Nice to ride, forward and bold to jumps, puppy dog personality. He competed at the RRP in 2017 and finished in the top 10. Has competed through the novice level with multiple top 5 finishes and moved up to training level late last season. He is very honest and tries hard for his rider, and has a great brain. He hacks alone, self loads, clips without drugs, and stands well for the vet and farrier. He has extensive ground work training. Only selling because I’m in college and can’t afford to keep him. Selling to a serious home only with references. He loves having his own person and a job. He is uncomplicated enough for an amateur, and serious enough to be competitive. Please contact me, Peggy, for more pictures and videos. Price can be negotiable. Located in Michigan.

Tiskelion

Triskelion: 2008 16.2h chestnut Thoroughbred gelding

Snatch up this fun guy before we head south! He is quiet and uncomplicated and would be suitable for a junior, young rider of adult amateur.

He’s earned ribbons at Training-level with an adult amateur, and shows scope for more. Or he’d be happy to show you the ropes at the lower levels. He’s easy to make round, honest to the fences, and just an all around fun horse! Located in Pennsylvania.

Irco Dento. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Genuine Training Level Rising Star

Irco Dento 6 year old Training Level packer with ability for more. 16.1hh KWPN gelding, by Cardento out of a Guidam mare. Imported March 2019 with an extensive vetting. This boy scored a 31 on the flat last time out. Show jumped up to 1.10m in Europe and has an unblemished cross country record. He is a total puppy dog on the ground. “Ernie” has a wonderful temperament, don’t be fooled by his chronological age, he is an old soul. Would suit an AA or YR. Ernie is the same horse no matter where you take him or how many times a week you ride him. He is a real confidence giver who is quite happy to jump a big fence for you or if you feel like just hanging out in the pasture with him he’s cool with that too. Ernie has been in professional training since arriving in the US but has been ridden by working students both in and out of the arena. Located in Georgia.

Windchase Starfire. Photo via Sport Horse Nation.

Talented young Irish Sport Horse with Advanced level potential

WINDCHASE STARFIRE – Chestnut 2014 Irish Sport Horse (3/4 TB, 1/4 ID) homebred gelding, should finish about 16.2 hands. He is by leading Eventing Sire Brandenburg’s Windstar (by I’m A Star, out of Kildalton Seabreeze, by Sea Crest), and out of a good TB steeplechasing mare. This striking youngster is traditionally Irish –bred, with the super Irish jumping bloodlines that are getting hard to find. He has excellent conformation, beautiful movement and a good uphill balance. Like all of Windstar’s offspring, he is a bold and talented jumper. He is well schooled, going nicely on the flat and over small courses, schooling XC, and ready to start his competition career. This is a serious upper level prospect with the potential to go to the top. Suitable for an experienced rider. $45,000.

EN’s Tilly Berendt Wins BEF Journalist of the Year 2019

Tilly Berendt and BEF Performance Director Richard Waygood. Photo by Kit Houghton.

We are very, very proud to report that one of our own, Tilly Berendt, has been named the 2019 Journalist of the Year by the British Equestrian Federation. The BEF Journalist of the Year award recognizes great journalism in equestrian sport, celebrating the work of a written journalist, broadcaster or photographer who has gone above and beyond to promote equestrian sport over the last year.

Besides her tireless work for Eventing Nation — and frankly, and unfathomable word count — Tilly also dedicated herself to increasing awareness of our sport to a broader audience. I’d like to bring attention to her piece in The Telegraph about Piggy French’s monumental win at Badminton this spring. If you haven’t yet, please give it a read at this link. In addition to spreading Piggy’s success far and wide, we can also thank Tilly for popularizing the #YearofthePig hashtag. Where would 2019 eventing social media be without Tilly?

“It’s absolutely unbelievable to win this award,” Tilly said. “I never for a moment thought I would do so. It’s been an incredible year for eventing, certainly for British eventers, and to win this award particularly for writing an article about Piggy French is so poignant and special. Not only she an unbelievable rider to work with and interview, but she represents a story of hope and climbing back to the top that I think anybody can relate to. To be able to tell that story is a privilege.”

From the entire team at EN, we’re “chuffed to bits” that we get to work alongside you. We can’t wait to see the stories you produce in 2020.

The Semifinals: Vote Your Favorite for 2019 EquiRatings Horse of the Year

In the eventing world, the off season also happens to be our award season, and that means it’s time for the 5th annual EquiRatings Horse of the Year contest.

Sadly, hometown hero and domestic heartthrob Tsetserleg did not make it through the first round, falling short to the formidable SAP Hale Bob, but there are four quality horses who need your help for this accolade. Let’s meet the candidates.

SAP Hale Bob OLD: A 15-year-old Oldenburg gelding (Helikon xx x Goldige) owned by his rider Ingrid Klimke. Hale Bob most notably won the European Championships this summer, becoming the second horse to earn back-to-back victories. He also won the Event Rider Masters leg at Wiesbaden.

Quality Purdey: A 13-year-old Oldenburg mare (Quality x Lara) owned by Dom and Claire Poole and Bek Burton. Riding under the Australian flag with Chris Burton, Quality Purdey finished second in the Pau CCI5*-L and third at Aachen CCIO4*-S over the summer.

Vanir Kamira: A 14-year-old Irish Sport Horse mare (Camiro de Haar Z x Fair Caledonian) owned by Trevor Dickens had a banner year with Piggy French. The mare won Badminton in an emotional finale and also finished second at Burghley, helping Piggy set a new record for most international wins in a season.

Rioghan Rua: A 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse mare (Jack of Diamonds x Highland Destiny) owned by Frank and Margaret Kinsella. The Irish are pulling hard for this mare, piloted by 22-year-old Cathal Daniels. They impressively won the Bramham CCIU254*-L before claiming a podium spot in third at the European Championships. If they continue this will be the first Irish horse to make the #ERHOTY final.

The semifinals end this weekend. You can cast your vote by clicking on the photo of your preferred horse in the posts below. Need some help choosing your pick? Tune into the #ERHOTY19 Eventing Podcast at this link.

A big semi final matchup between two great horses. Wouldn't be surprised to see Ingrid Klimke and Chris Burton stood…

Posted by EquiRatings on Wednesday, December 18, 2019

You can love and admire them both…but only one can go to the final. Will it be Piggy French to defend the title for GB…

Best of 2019 Video Countdown: #14 – Sharon White’s Forking Good Save at Tryon

Each day between now and the New Year we’re counting down the top 15 most popular videos shared on EN in 2019. The #14 spot goes to “Sharon White’s Forking Good Save at Tryon,” which garnered 3,866 views when it was originally posted on April 9, 2019.

While we want our riding to be as close to perfect as we can get it, sometimes being an event rider is about making do when the going gets rough! Sharon White had one of these moments last weekend at The Fork at TIEC with Cooley On Show. Tim Hawkins was volunteering at Fence 16 A/B when he caught their save. A bobble at the table at A had Sharon a little off balance, but Louie didn’t change course at all, telling her “Don’t worry, I got this! Just hold on!”

Thanks Tim for your submission, and for being an awesome volunteer!

Best of 2019 Video Countdown: #15 – An Ode to Horse Husbands

Each day between now and the New Year we’re counting down the top 15 most popular videos shared on EN in 2019. The #15 spot goes to “An Ode to Horse Husbands,” which garnered 3,820 views when it was originally posted on Feb. 12, 2019.

Former Top Gear host Richard Hammond lays out the most hilarious — in a it hurts because it’s true kind of way — diatribe of horse culture from the eyes of a non-horse person. Mucking and trailering all seem pretty commonplace, until you put it all together. Eventers, finally an EN post your significant other can enjoy too!

𝓐𝓵𝓵 𝓬𝓵𝓲𝓹𝓹𝓮𝓭 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓵𝓸𝓸𝓴𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓵𝓲𝓴𝓮 𝓪 𝓬𝓱𝓾𝓫𝓫𝔂 𝓹𝓸𝓷𝔂! I love how much in winter photos Louie looks like a chubby pony!. . We had a fun lesson today, with Louie being a little cheeky at times and taking over and deleting strides! But towards the end I was managing to prevent that from happening!. . I then ran through tomorrow’s tests on Moo, then schooled Lani. Sometimes I practice elements of Moos tests on the others to make me feel more confident that I’m taking him 😂. . Today that backfired, I asked Lani to reinback and she went straight up and over crushing my leg on the fence. We both seem fine and did some nice work after but I think a gentle hack for her tomorrow and maybe drugs for me before my test! 🙈. . . . . . #setfiretotherein #thehorseyadele #practice #training #eventerproblems #fridayfail #ouch #eventhorse #irishsportshorse #horsesofinstagram

Eventers Ring in Holiday Spirit at Maryland Horse Trials Donation Derby

Emmilie Davis and Stealing Kisses at The Maryland Horse Trials @ Loch Moy Farm Sunday Donation Derby.

Posted by Amy Flemming Waters Photography on Tuesday, December 10, 2019

‘Tis the season to embarrass our horses with festive costumes! The Area II crowd did it right this weekend, competing in full costume at the Maryland Horse Trials Annual Donation Derby. This year, funds supported Frederick Friends of Our County Animal Shelter.

With Santa hats, jingle bells and tinsel aplenty, riders tackled derby courses from low logs through Modified level on Loch Moy Farm’s all weather footing.

The highly coveted Best Holiday Spirit Award went to Janelle Stewart riding Cathy Hare’s Diamond Junction. “Colin” was quite literally transformed into a one horse open sleigh. Check out their costume and many others below through your collection of social media posts.

Many thanks photographers Maya Kuntze and Amy Flemming-Waters of AFW Photography — check out Amy’s website for more fun pics of the event.

#EventerProblems Vol. 205, Presented by Haygain: The Essentials

People argue that the barrier of entry for our sport is quite high, but it really doesn’t take that much. Mostly you’ll need a bit of grit and a sense of humor… and of course two saddles, two bridles, 12 hoof picks, 600 saddle pads, etc., etc. No wonder eventers are a bunch of pack rats! Enjoy this latest collection of your collections:

Sound on 📣 LOVING jumping my boy at the moment. Something has definitely started to click! He makes everything feel teeny too, it’s just trying to keep our canter calm so we can do little adjustments before a fence if needed. Honestly, a few months ago if Wally had got that close to the first part of the double, he would’ve just tanked down to the second part gung-ho!! Still lots to work on….and we had a super flat work lesson this week showing me where I really need to focus! (always that outside connection 🤣🤦‍♀️) . Thanks you so much to the lovely people at @koekibar_2018 for my EqueFocus supplements too! In all honesty, my jumping has significantly improved since I started taking it! 👍 . . . . . . #gifted #showjumper #training #eventer #eventerinthemaking #eventersofinstagram #eventersdoitbetter #eventerproblems #irishdraught #fedontopspec #irishthoroughbred #bay #baygelding #thebestbay #baybaycakes #scottishlife #countrylife #countryblogger #countrylifestyle #horsesofinstagram #showjumping

Last week Lissa Green shared a post that really resonated with me. In frank words, she recounts a head injury that she “didn’t give the respect it needed.” In a sport where the long held opinion is “get back on or go to the hospital,” don’t be afraid to listen to your body and seek medical help if needed. Give Lissa’s thoughts a read in the embedded post above and mind your melon.

Rest in Peace, Madeline

Holly Payne and Madeline.

We are sad to report that the Holly Payne Caravella’s former upper-level horse Madeline passed away this week at the age of 19. Owned and also ridden by Jill Gordon, “Baby” colicked due to a herniated diaphragm, and ultimately couldn’t be saved despite the best efforts of the veterinary team at the Mid Atlantic Equine Hospital.

Baby was the quintessential red headed mare. Sourced by Marilyn Payne, Baby was known for her fiery personality. Jill and her daughter Alex competed the Thoroughbred mare by Mysterious Count before passing the reins to Holly Payne Caravella in 2005.

By 2008, Holly and Baby were competing at the Advanced level and completed the mare’s first CCI4*-L that fall at Fair Hill International. The following year, the dynamic duo finished 38th at the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials. In 2012, they shared their five-star debut at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. Together, Holly and Baby competed at the Advanced level for seven years.

Jill made the decision to retire her horse from the upper levels in 2014 and Baby continued on as a schoolmaster at the lower levels for Jill and others.

“Baby had the heart of a lion, but was never easy until Holly tamed and gentled her,” Jill said. “I will forever be in Holly’s debt for her years of work, partnership and love for our shared angel! Every ride on Baby was like flying on a cloud — Holly did that.”

”Madeline was one-of-a-kind,” Holly said of the chestnut mare. “She will surely never be forgotten. I credit the start of my professional career to this fiery little redheaded chestnut mare. She taught me so many life lessons and took me to some amazing places!”

Rest in Peace, Baby.

Our horses 🐴 deserve the best retirement after a long career of showing. Learn more about the Madden philosophy on retiring horses in this month's Learning Center video with Beezie Madden / John Madden Sales, Inc Full video👉 https://www.usef.org/learning-center/videos/horse-retirement-at-madden-mountain-with-beezie

I’ve decided that when I reach my twilight years, I want to retire at Madden Mountain.

John and Beezie Madden have dedicated their lives to their horses, in training, competition and retirement, so they’ve set up the country’s ritziest residence for horses of advanced age in Cazenovia, New York. Here, horses “go back to nature” as Beezie says, living outside full time in a herd dynamic, while also enjoying a barn designed by John Madden. Enjoy these clips of horses quite literally living their best lives.
