Over the weekend, a new name has been added to a prestigious list: that of horse and rider pairs who are three-time winners of the same CCI5*-L. Hazel Shannon and Willingapark Clifford cliched their third victory of the Australian International Three-Day Event. They’re the first pair to do so at that particular event and they’re amongst royal company of those who’ve ever managed the triple-winner feat.

Complete a survey, contribute to science! Jill Thomas, a Canadian Advanced-level eventer who is based in Virginia, is completing her MSc in Equine Science through the University of Edinburgh and undertaking a research project on the fitness programs of upper level eventers and how they correlate to injuries. She’s looking for people who have ridden at the Preliminary level or above to complete a survey. [Fitness regime management of upper level event horses and the incidence of distal limb injuries: A survey of upper level riders across the globe]

ICMYI, venues for the 2022 FEI World Championships were announced this weekend. The concept of hosting all disciples as at a single venue has been benched for this next iteration of the championships. Eventing and driving will be held at Pratoni del Vivaro in Italy. Jumping, dressage, para dressage, and vaulting will be held in Herning, Denmark. Venues for reining and endurance have yet to be voted on. How long have you been an eventing fan? Not as long as Lady Kingsley, who recently celebrated her 100th bithday! She’s seen the sport change and grow over the years, originally as a competitors, then as a breeder, and now and an owner and supporter. 2:20 Here are your top ten provisionally at the conclusion of the division!

2:19 Jessica Phoenix and Pavarotti gathered 22.8 time penalties, which puts them down the leaderboard in 14th place overnight.

2:16 Our last pair is through the finish flags, so we’re waiting on the live scores to be updated. Someone needs to get Lucinda another hot beverage in the meantime.

2:14 And easily through the final water for Jessica and Pavarotti as well. They’re nearly home!

2:13 Easily through the double brushes for Jessica.

2:11 Nilson and Rock Phantom are home safely.

2:09 Jessica and Rotti take some flags at the double corners, but they’re hopefully clear.

2:02 Lucienne Elms and Mistralou unfortunately collect two run outs at the second element of the double corners. She puts her hand up and retires.

2:00 Nilson Da Silva with Rock Phantom and Lucienne Elms with Mistralou are now on course. Ela Klugman and Bendigo are through the final water.

1:58 Allie and Sparrow’s Nio are over the last combination and the last fence. What a fab pair! Daniela Moguel and Cecelia were fast, but not quite fast enough to take over the lead — they came home with 8 time faults.

1:54 Valerie and Favian are looking good through the final water with a little extra flair added by some Spanish moss training from Valerie’s helmet! They’re close to home and it will be interesting to see how fast they’re been.

1:52 Ema Klugman  and Bendigo are on course now — they’re one of the recipients of the MARs Bromont Under 25 grants. Allie and Sparrow’s Nio are clear through the first water.

1:49 Allie Sacksen and her mighty part-Connemara Sparrow’s Nio are now on course.

1:48 Valerie Vizcarrondo Pride and Favian are clear through the first water. They could actually steal the lead from Lauren if they go double clear.

1:46 Leaderboard changes! Phillip and Sea Of Clouds did indeed have time penalties so they’ll be further down the leaderboard than we initially though. Lauren Kieffer and Landmark’s Monte Carlo have taken over the top spot with a double clear! Sharon White and Cooley On Show slot into third after a clear round with 9.6 time penalties.

1:43 Emily Hamil with Corvette and Valerie Vizcarrondo Pride with Favian are also now on course. Daniela is through the double brushes.

1:41 Lauren and Landmark’s Monte Carlo have had a lovely and what looks to be a very fast round. Lauren checks her watch as they’re through the finish flags. Will they be inside the time and take the lead?

1:39 Sharon and Cooley On Show are home, but their scores aren’t posted on the live results yet. Phillip and Sea Of Clouds’ score now shows them with 25.6 time penalties now which puts then in 12th … not sure what that’s about.

1:37 A tiny bit sticky into the last water for Cooley On Show, but Sharon gives him some encouragement and they’re easily clear through the complex and on their way home.

1:36 Daniela Moguel and Ceclia are on course. Sharon White and Cooley On Show are clear through the double brushes.

1:33 Cooley On Show leaves a stride out she he and Sharon make it through the ditch/brush complex unscathed. Ryan Wood and Rembrandt is through the final water and has had a lovely round with the exception of that dang early runout!

1:32 Lauren Kieffer and Landmark’s Monte Carlo are on course. Sharon White and Cooley On Show are through the first water.

1:29 Sharon White and Cooley On Show are out of the box and they now have a chance to take over the clubhouse lead.

1:28 Ryan Wood and Rembrandt are on course as well and through the first water, but they had a runout early at fence 4.

1:26 Sydney Solomon with Early Review C are on course and clear through the double brushes.

1:25 Lynn and Coolio finish clear, but unfortunately with 17.2 time penalties — that drops then down from 3rd overnight to 4th currently. Phillip Dutton and Sea of Cloud are now in the lead after they’ve turned in the only double-clear round so far.

1:21 Victor Z unfortunately does not particularly want to jump those double ditch/brushes for Kathrine Brown. She puts her hand up.

1:20 Lynn and Coolio are beautifully through the double hedges. We did see them pull a flag at a different complex of double corners earlier — hopefully that won’t be a problem.

1:18 Oh no!! Buccaneer stumbles up the bank out of the final water and can’t quite make the jump over the skinny C element. He tries so hard for Joe, but Joe slips off over his head and takes his bridle with him. What a total bummer.

1:16 Lynn and “Coolio” are clear through the first water. Joe Meyer and Buccaneer take the long route through the angled hedges.

1:14 Phew! Phillip easily makes it through the final water with Sea of Clouds. That’s where he fell from Long Island T earlier.

1:13 Lynn Symansky and her Pan-Am Games partner RF Cool Play are on course and clear thus far. They were in third after dressage and have a chance to take the lead.

1:12 Buccaneer stutters off the ground in the first water, but Joe stays centered and they get through.

1:08 Phillip Dutton with Seas of Clouds and Joe Meyer with Buccaneer are both out on course now, but we haven’t seen them on the live stream yet. Mike and Eddie come home with 18.8 time.

1:07 Pardon the belated news, but Erin Sylvester and Campround have slipped into the provisional lead! They very nearly went double clear, just racking up 0.4 in time.

1:04 Arielle Aharoni tumbles off Dutch Times over the second element of the first water. That’s a wet and cold end to their weekend, unfortunately.

1:01 Steady Eddie is a total beast through the double ditch/brush complex. No problems for Mike there!

1:00 Mike Pendelton and Steady Eddie are on course and clear through the first water.

12:58 Oh dear! Gabrielle Ruane and Lismakeera Brewski unfortunately jump the wrong second element in the ditch/brush complex. They’re been pulled up and are eliminated.

12:55 Madeline Scott and Crosby’s Gold are looking a little underpowered today — they make it through the first water, but Crosby’s Gold says ‘no’ to the first ditch/brush fence.

12:53 Mara de Puy and Congobrazzaville C are home safe! They collect no jumping penalties, but they do collect 26 fault in time penalties. That will drop them out of the clubhouse lead, unfortunately, and into third at the moment behind Buck and Lisa Marie.

12:50 Mara and Congo are clear through the last water — just 3 jumping efforts to go from here.

12:49 Lisa Marie Fergusson and Honor Me are home clear with the fastest time of the day so far! They collect just 5.6 time.

12:47 Erin nearly goes for a swim in the first water when Campground stumbles on landing a bit, but they recover and they’re through clear!

12:44 Mara has to work for it a bit through the first water, but she and Congo are clear.

12:13 Jacob Fletcher and Van Gough have left the start box as well and have run into trouble at the exact same spot as Phillip. It looks like the horse may have spooked — could this be something we see course trouble for the rest fo the riders?

12:10 Oh no! Phillip and Long Island T run into trouble at Fence 8, an angled brush over a ditch. They circle and get it the second time.

Pratoni del Vivaro Named Host Venue for Eventing at 2022 World Equestrian Games

During an in-person meeting today in Moscow, Russia the FEI board named host cities for the 2022 FEI World Championships. This next iteration of the FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) will be split between two venues, depending on discipline.

Pratoni del Vivaro in Italy, located about 22 miles south of Rome, will play host to the Eventing and Driving disciplines. The venue is no stranger to upper-level competition: it hosted cross country competition for the WEG in 1998, routinely holds 1* through 4* events annually, and hosted a leg of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup this past summer. Eventing will be held from September 14-18, 2022.

The Jumping, Dressage, Para Dressage and Vaulting disciplines will be held in Herning, Denmark in August 2022.

“When we opened the process for the FEI World Championships 2022 to single and multi-discipline bids, our intention was to have events that were more manageable and sustainable at proven venues,” FEI Secretary General Sabrina Ibáñez said.

“By allocating these multi-discipline Championships to Herning and Pratoni del Vivaro we’re working with hosts that already have the necessary experience and required infrastructure in place to organise world-class equestrian championships.”

These World Championships in 2022 will serves as qualifiers for Eventing, Jumping, Dressage and Para Dressagethe at the2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This Week in Horse Health News …

The breaking horse health news this week is, of course, that the USEF has banned the use of Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) in competition horses. MPA, commonly known as Depo, is a human contraceptive which is also used in horses to control hormones in mares or exert calming effects on geldings though it is not FDA-approved for use in equines. The ban comes after reports of equine fatalities and anaphylaxis. It is effective December 1, 2019 and carries a penalty range starting at a 3-6 month suspension and a fine of $3,000-$6,000 for a first offense. [US Equestrian]

Treating respiratory allergies and diseases in competition horses is tricky, but doable. Conditions like allergies and asthma in average pleasure horses is relatively easy to treat, but due to a number of factors, the challenges in managing these conditions generally increase as horses move up the levels. Belgian veterinarian and researcher Dr. Fe ter Woort recently reviewed the challenges that owners and veterinarians face in managing these conditions in competition horses, what can be done to keep them healthy, and competition-friendly treatments. An investigation into the death of Breeder’s Cup Classic runner Mongolian Groom is underway. Mongolian Groom suffered a catastrophic injury in the homestretch and was ultimately euthanized. Videos taken during workouts a week prior to the race which showed the colt visibly lame were shared heavily on social media, particularly after the race, and have called into question the pre-race veterinary protocols at Santa Anita. Dr. Larry Bramlage of Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital was contracted by the Breeders’ Cup board to review the information relating to Mongolian Groom’s death, including his pre-race condition and the track’s pre-race protocols. [Paulick Report]

The second iteration of the Mars Bromont Rising Program wrapped up at Mardaza Farms:

The last day of the Mars Bromont Rising U25 was a complete success and I owe a huge thank you to everyone at Mardanza that helped us to pull this off while also running their own businesses and preparing for the Jockey Club International.I know I must make the people in my life a bit mental when we decide to take on things like this on top of of already hectic schedules, but I am so grateful to be in a position to host something like this due to great people in my own life. In turn I’m inspired by people like Peter, Valerie, Steve, Sue, Chris, Max, Leslie, Jim, Jackie, Brian, and so many others that give their time to developing future riders and horsemen.So many people love to be frustrated with the direction our sport is going. They especially love to point out all the things others are doing wrong. That’s only ok if you roll up your sleeves and jump in to do something about it. Steve, this program is your brainchild and you are the example of a busy successful person paying it forward. From the North American Eventing community, THANK YOU!

With just three weeks left of the 2019 meet at the Finger Lakes Racetrack in Farmington, New York, owners and trainers are beginning to think about their impending moves south to warmer climates. Before the track closes for the season, they’ll often asses each of their charge’s potential as a racehorse and if they don’t seem promising enough to continue their training down south they will opt to list them for sale.

Lucky for you, that means there are a large number of fabulous horses that the volunteers of Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds have been busy listing. Come and get ’em!

Queen Alexandrina (AFLEET ALEX – RAGIN CAJUN, BY EL CORREDOR): 2016 16.1-hand New York-bred mare

Not all queens have to be divas, and Queen Alexandrina proves it. Her super sweet temperament easily won over the FLF volunteers and her handler called her just a “cool horse” who is great to work around, chill, and had not bad habits. Queen Alexandrina won one race and that remains the only time she has hit the board in her 14 starts. Her calling may not be at the racetrack, but her nicely sloped shoulder and powerful hind end suggest that she may have some innate jumping ability. Maybe she could be a cross country queen?

English Manor (TOCCET – RUNAWAY FIELDS, BY RUNAWAY GROOM): 2010 16.2-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Who is in the market for a fantastic war horse? (The answer to that should be: Everyone!)

When you think of an English manor, what kind of adjectives does it conjure? Classy and regal to name few, perhaps? This gelding is just that. “Manor” is a gentleman and a scholar of the track, racing a total of 113 times and winning an impressive $343,450 over his career. He’s been a durable, reliable athlete for his connections who have decided that he’s paid his dues on the track (even though he won his most recent race!) and it’s time for him to find a second career while he still has a lot left to give.

Sarah’s Rainbow (SHACKLEFORD – DISTINCTIVE FLAG, BY DISTINCTIVE PRO): 2016 16.2-hand New York-bred mare

Even on a chilly and blustery day, Sarah’s Rainbow was the picture of sweetness and politeness. Her trainer introduced her as “The quietest, sweetest, most easy going, innocent, 3-year old filly I ever met. A doll!” and she certainly didn’t disappoint! Sarah’s Rainbow began her racing career late last fall at more competitive tracks like Aqueduct and Belmont Park, but even after making the move to Finger Lakes she still hasn’t been able to hit the boards. While racing may not be her preferred sport, Sarah’s Rainbow is a lovely athletic type with endless potential once she finds her calling.

Monday Video from CLM DWN: Recreating an Iconic WWI Photo

No doubt you’ve seen the photo: an aerial shot of soldiers standing at attention to form the shape of a horse’s head and neck. It is shared heavily on social media around Veteran’s Day and Remembrance Day each year, but what’s the story behind the photo? On the photo’s 100th anniversary last year, a regiment of the British Army’s Royal Engineers recreated the picture and told it’s story.

Yesterday during the 57th Trakehner Stallion Licensing in Neumünster, Germany, Tim and Cheryl Holekamp were named German Trakehner Verband Breeders of the Year for the achievement of breeding and starting Tsetserleg (Windfall x Thabana, by Buddenbrock). This is the first time American breeders have received this distinction. Christine Turner purchased “Thomas” from the Holekamps as a 5-year-old, eventually paired him with Boyd Martin, and, as they say, the rest is history!

Some fabulous news from France came yesterday evening: Thibault Fornier, who was injured during a fall on cross country at Pompadour Horse Trials last month resulting in several days spent in a coma, is continuing to make excellent progress. A recent post to Thibault’s Facebook page revealed that he was hemiplegic on the right side upon waking from the coma, but has begun to regain use of his right arm and is beginning to walk again. You’ve got this, Thibault!

Horses may be able to smell your fear … and your happiness too. Human body odors contain chemical signals which are important in species-specific communication. When another human is exposed to a “fearful” chemosignal produced by another human, they will have a fearful emotional response themselves. Researchers wanted to find out if animals who have evolved alongside humans, like dogs and horses, produced the same emotional responses to human chemosignals. It looks liked dogs definitely did, and it looked like horses may have too! [HorseTalk]

Antibiotic resistance is a real thing to be concerned about, but as we know horses are really good at getting into trouble and getting themselves scratched up. What can we use to treat a horse’s wounds without contributing to antibiotic resistance? Fortunately, there are a host of options that your veterinarian can take into account when treating your horses. There’s also good news in that some of the most common treatments that horse owners reach for, like silver dressings and triple antibiotic ointment, haven’t seen much resistance develop over the past few decades. Bute appears to be a risk factor in breakdowns on the track. The reasons why are as you’d expect: if a horse is racing or working out on bute it’s likely masking pre-exisitng injuries or pain which are then worsened by further hard exercise. Thanks to results from a recently published study which quantifies this risk, epidemiologist Tim Parkin, who has studied the Jockey Club Equine Injury Database for 10 years, will be calling for policies to be put in place that require a horse’s system to be completely clear of the drug before it races. Currently a race-day presence of bute up to 2.0 micrograms per milliliter in blood is allowed at tracks in all states except California. California already has a zero-tolerance policy for bute before races and workouts and Parkin is calling for other states to adopt this policy as well. [BloodHorse]

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: A Winner Once Again

Success is what everyone is after, isn’t it? But success takes on so may different forms that sometimes it isn’t obvious what it looks like. At the racetrack, it seems pretty cut and dry: winning races or finishing in the money equals success and the more the better, of course. Some Thoroughbreds find a moderate amount of success at the track by placing well in a handful of races. Some manage to win one and then are never able to replicate that feat.

One of the beautiful things about taking in a Thoroughbred off the track is that it gives them the chance to be a winner once again in a second career. This week we’re featuring three OTTBs who have clocked at least one win during their racing career. Could one of them win your heart as well?

Frogman Mel (STORMY ATLANTIC – STOLEN HUMOR, BY DISTORTED HUMOR): 2011 17.0-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

Don’t pass over this special warhorse! Named after a family friend who served in the US Navy, Frogman Mel’s career on the track spanned over 69 races, many of which where Claiming races and he did change hands several times, but his connections kept track of him. He was claimed for the final time by his longtime trainer and his namesake’s son who wanted to secure his future. “Froggie” went on to race several more times before his connections decided to retire him sound find him a home through MMSC.

As warhorse who remained successful throughout much of his career, Froggie is the type of horse who loves to have a job. He’s already enjoyed some letdown time, but it happy to be back under saddle and in work. It will take time for Froggie to learn a whole new way of carrying himself as a riding horse and developing the musculature to do so, but he has unlimited potential and a real drive to go to work every day.

Mighty Might (FORT PRADO – NEAT, BY MIZZEN MAST): 2016 16.0-hand Florida-bred gelding

This mighty looking three-year-old hit the board a couple of times in his 18 race career, including a single first-placed finish. However, his recent spat of back-of-the-back finishes signals to his trainer that he’ll likely be better suited to another career. Mighty Might has no physical limitations and his only vice is that he sometimes cribs mildly only after eating peppermints, which are of course his most favorite treat! Don’t let that stop you though — Mighty Might will make up for it by being your best friend. His connections say he has one of the biggest personalities in the barn and truly loves people.

Honeydukes (BIRDSTONE – ABOUND, BY SMART STRIKE): 2013 15.3-hand Pennsylvania-bred mare

After earning $106,471 in 35 career starts, Honeydukes was brought back to the farm for some downtime in June. This sweet girl is absolutely adored by her connections and has turned into a barn favorite off the track as well. The farm manager has enjoyed riding “Dukes” around the farm, including though open fields. She’s been free-jumped as well and doesn’t bat an eyelash at whatever new challenge is presented to her. Her connections think that her sweet and sensible nature would make her an ideal choice for a young rider or amateur’s first restart project.

US Equestrian has a shiny new headquarters located at the Kentucky Horse Park. The headquarters hosted its grand opening this weekend and will be home to over 30 organizations. As part of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee family, the official designation of the Olympic rings and the Paralympic symbol are proudly displayed on the building. The new structure, which replaces the organization’s previous home in a leased building in the Horse Park, is estimated to generate more than $200,000 in annual savings. [US Equestrian Hosts Official Grand Opening of New Headquarters at the Kentucky Horse Park]

‘Tis the season for creative clip jobs, but here’s one serving a purpose. A young woman in England, Liffie Fowler, has clipped a semi-colon onto her horse’s hindquarters in order to show solidarity with those suffering mental illness and addiction and she’s encouraging others to do so as well. The punctuation mark references Project Semicolon, which is a suicide prevention charity that was founded in the US. [Clipped semi-colon supports those with mental health issues]

The marquee race of Breeder’s Cup weekend, the Classic, was marred by a catastrophic breakdown. Just after the turn for home, 4-year-old gelding Mongolian Groom suffered an injury to his left hind and was pulled up by his jockey. He was vanned off the track and was then x-rayed, revealing multiple fractures in the bottom of the cannon bone and top of the pastern. Due to the severity of the injury, his connections opted to euthanize him. I hear folks mention venues like Bromont and Rebecca Farm as bucket list events that they want to compete or spectate at someday and, don’t get me wrong, those are amazing places that I want to go also, but high up on my list of places as well is actually The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.

Now, now … I know it’s an indoor event and not a real horse trials, but I’m a real sucker for a fair and the more agricultural the better! The Royal really sounds like just my kind of place. I can completely do without a midway full of cacophonous and rickety steel rides and carnies hawking cheap prizes — give me some horses to watch, some baby goats to pet, some maple syrup to sample and my week will be made!

We’ll be keeping our eye on The Royal’s indoor eventing this weekend as well as Galway Downs International. Stay tuned!

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has developed a CT scanner that can be used on standing sedated horses. The machine can be used to scan a horse’s leg while standing, unlike a conventional CT machine which requires a horse to be under general anesthesia and recumbent. This makes the scan, which can be more advantageous than x-rays, a much more accessible and feasible option for horse owners and veterinarians alike. This scanner can also be set in a horizontal position and be used to scan a sedated horse’s head and neck as well. [BloodHorse]

You get your horse’s teeth regularly floated, but do you really understand why? When it comes to understanding why those hooks have to get filed down, it helps to understand the anatomy of the horse’s teeth and how they chew. Dr. James Brown, Clinical Associate Professor of Equine Surgery at Virginia Tech, explains why horses’ teeth grow like they do, what dental issues can arise, and how taking care of them will improve their welfare. Chia seeds: you put them in your smoothie, but what about in your horse’s feeds? Dr. Juliet Getty believes they can be a helpful supplement to a horse’s diet. Chia seeds are best known for being high in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and they are present in a similar ratios as in pasture grasses. It’s the unofficial end of the 2019 Thoroughbred racing season, as the Breeder’s Cup takes place this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2, at Santa Anita Park in California.

Like the Triple Crown races in the spring, the Breeder’s Cup weekend in the fall is a highlight event for the racing industry. Many trainers aspire to have a horse run in a Breeder’s Cup race; but many, many Thoroughbreds bred for racing will never achieve that prestige.

They could, however, achieve prestige in another discipline. Could you give one of these horses looking for a new career a chance?

Iampoe is an exceptionally cute gelding who has been very loved by owner, who also acts as his groom and exercise rider. She calls him a ‘Cadillac ride’ and with his great build and the nice movement he shows in his jog video, we can certainly believe it. Iampoe hasn’t been finishing at the top of the pack since earlier this summer so his owner is regrettably offering him sale now and wants him to find only the very best home. She would love to see him shine in a new discipline and could really go in any direction!

Yes, she’s definitely a Thoroughbred! It’s not everyday you see a flaxen mane in this breed, so we really couldn’t help but feature this filly despite her slight downhill build. Even so, it doesn’t necessarily make or break her future. She didn’t have it in her to be a racehorse, having no terribly notable finishes in her eight starts, but perhaps eventing is more her style? If she’s your style, take her home and find out!

From his good muscling to shiny coat, you can tell that Discreet Ransom has been well-cared for by his race connections. He’s an easy horse to love as well and was described as a ‘good boy’ by his handler who was very affectionate towards him. Discreet Ransom hasn’t performed too poorly in his nine career starts, all of which were Claiming races, but his connection focus their business on Allowance and Stakes quality horses and decided that this guys doesn’t make the cut. It sure looks like he could make the cut as an event horse though!

Riders Announced for 2019 Horseware Indoor Eventing Challenge at The Royal + Other Highlights

Now in its 12th year, the $20,000 Horseware Indoor Eventing Challenge is the marquee evening event for the opening weekend of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF) in Toronto, Ontario. As in previous years, the Indoor Eventing Challenge will take place on the first two nights of the fair, with a preliminary competition on Friday night November 1st, followed by the finals on Saturday November 2nd.

Previously, the invitation only event has been capped at 10 riders, but 11 will compete for a piece of the prize money this year. Competitors include the entire Canadian 2019 Pan American Games team, a member of the World Equestrian Games silver medal-winning Irish team, and a host of other top Canadian event riders. This year’s participating riders are:

  • Holly Jacks-Smither
  • Kendal Lehari
  • Colleen Loach
  • Brandon McMechan
  • Jessica Phoenix

In addition to the Indoor Eventing Challenge, there is plenty of additional excitement for equine enthusiasts over the course of the The Royal, which runs through November 10th.

For anyone attending The Royal from out of country in particular, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Musical Ride is a can’t-miss performance as the group only makes a select number of appearances outside of Canada throughout the year. The RCMP Musical Ride is one of the most impressive drill teams you’ll see, featuring 32 riders and their horses performing traditional cavalry exercises set to music. All of the riders are active duty police officers and have at least two years experience doing active police work before volunteering for duty with the Musical Ride. And what’s even more impressing — most participants have no previous equine experience prior to joining the Musical Ride.

Back for a second year — but this time with a twist — is the Royal Dressage Derby, which will take place on Tuesday, November 5th. The Derby will see four riders go head to head riding borrowed horses in a ‘knock-out’ format. This year, Team Canada event riders will be pitted against Team Canada dressage riders.

In round one Lindsay Kellock and Naima Moreira Laliberte, members of the 2019 gold medal-winning Pan American Games dressage team, will face off against one another and each ride a Grand Prix test on the same horse. In round two, Jessica Phoenix and Dana Cooke will compete against each other riding a Third Level on another horse. The winning dressage rider and winning event rider for each preliminary round will compete against each other in the final round on new, borrowed horses and, similar to IHSA-style, they will only have minutes to get to know their mounts before performing their final tests.

Tickets are still available for both nights of the Indoor Eventing competition as well as all other days of the Royal Horse Show and can be purchased at this link. Earlier this year we welcomed Jumper Nation editor Meagan DeLisle over to the dark side of fancy prancing, sans-arena running and jumping, and colored-stick hopping otherwise known as eventing. Meagan found herself in need of switching things up a bit from her native jumper land and found the perfect partner in Bear, a 19-year-old grade Appendix Quarter Horse with no tail. If you haven’t already read their story in Meagan’s own words, do yourself a favor and catch up on that first.

We post a lot of helmet cams from upper-level competitions, but the truth is we love a good ride-along behind pricked ears at any level. No matter what size fences are being jumped, a ride where you’re having fun every stride of the way is the best kind of ride. If you’ve been in the eventing world for a hot minute, then you’ll likely recognize the Carolina Horse Park (CHP) as the spectacular facility that plays host to early season goal event, the Cloud 11~Gavilan North LLC Carolina International CCI and Horse Trial.

But the word class facility, dedicated to the preservation of open space for equestrian and recreational purposes, remains active year round. In addition to hosting a plethora of other horse trials throughout the year including the War Horse Event Series and Southern Pines Horse Trials amongst others, there are also schooling opportunities and many other equestrian events in other disciplines.

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the continued success of the CHP depends in large part on the generosity of its supporters. Fundraising efforts for the season ahead are well underway in the form of their creative Anniversary Challenge, a race to raise funds between members of the community with close ties to park.

“The CHP Ambassador program, now in its second year, is a critically important part of the Park’s overall development and fundraising strategy. We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated and charitably inclined group of Ambassadors again this year,” said Jane Murray, Executive Director of the Park.

“The financial support that these individuals generate goes a long way to maintaining and preserving the Carolina Horse Park and for that we are most appreciative.”

From a young woman who began eventing less than three years ago and did her first event at CHP, to a member of the Canadian 2019 Pan American Games team who bases her business in North Carolina; each ambassador has a special connection to CHP and has committed to raising $5,000 and awareness of the facility. The 2019 Ambassadors are:

Each ambassador has their own unique online giving page accessed via the main landing page of the challenge where gifts to the Park can be made on their behalf and progress towards their goal can be tracked. The first Ambassador to reach $5,000 raised will be handsomely rewarded with a Grand Prize Package which includes an entry and stall to all 2020 CHP sponsored events and schooling days.

Generous donors will be in the running for a prize as well: anyone that gives a gift of $100 or more to any ambassador is automatically entered in a raffle for an entry and stall to one of the events of the 2020 Adequan War Horse Event Series presented by Southern Pines Equine Associates.

Not only is the fundraiser a race against the other ambassadors, but it’s also a race against the clock: the Anniversary Challenge concludes on Saturday, November 9. Get giving and go eventing!

It was hard not to think of 24-year-old French eventer Thibault Fournier yesterday during the final phase at Les 5 Etoiles de Pau, the event he most memorably won last year in his first attempt at the level. Thibault, who suffered a catastrophic fall on cross country at a horse trials earlier this month, is on the long road to recovery after awakening from a six-day-long coma. Most recently he’s been able to eat some food after coming off of respiratory assistance. Thibault’s French teammates brought him along for their rides during yesterday’s show jumping in the form of orange armbands — a touching tribute to their friend.

In the midst of another devastating wildfire, Northern California needs help. Hurricane force winds have stoked the flames of the Kincade Fire, which now covers 30,000 acres and are only 10% contained.
