Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Introducing Club Steady Eddie

Mike Pendelton and Steady Eddie at Millbrook H.T. 2019. Photo by Abby Powell.

They say hard work reaps reward and Mike Pendleton is one of the hardest working folks out there. Mike has been an instrumental part of the team at the Windurra for the past seven years, working his way from working student to international traveling groom to assistant rider for Boyd Martin.

This year, Boyd and Steady Eddie‘s owners George and Gretchen Wintersteen, Pierre Colin, and Denise Lahey, are giving Mike the opportunity to get some upper-level mileage and break into the top level of the sport by giving him the ride on the 16-year-old Australian-bred Thoroughbred gelding with the ultimate goal being for Mike and Eddie to compete at the Kentucky Three-Day Event next spring and perhaps the new Fair Hill five-star next fall.

After getting to know the gelding through the national Training through Intermediate levels in the winter and early spring, they made their FEI debut in the CCI2*-S at Fair Hill in April. They were later awarded one of the inaugural Bromont Rising grants which assisted them in completing the CCI3*-L at the MARS Bromont CCI Three-Day Event in June. Mike made his Advanced debut with Eddie at Millbrook Horse Trials this August and most recently the pair placed 12th in the CCI4*-S at Great Meadow. In the hunt for their five-star qualification, they’re looking ahead to Fair Hill International and perhaps also the Ocala Jockey Club Three-Day Event this fall.

But with great opportunity, comes great responsibility (or something like that, as the saying goes) so Mike will be need to take financing these upper-level goals into his own hands. He is doing that by offering an annual buy-in to Club Steady Eddie, wherein members will get regular updates from Mike as well as access to their training at the farm and at competitions, plus an all important Steady Eddie hat!

Good luck, Mike and Eddie! Watch the video below to learn more and contact Mike if you’re interested in joining their journey.

Fight back against an energy crisis that can impact condition and performance.

Equi-Jewel® is a high-fat, low-starch and -sugar formula developed to safely meet the energy needs of your horse.

Whether you have a hard keeper that needs extra calories to maintain his weight, or a top performance horse that needs cool energy to perform at her peak, Equi-Jewel can meet your horse’s energy needs. Equi-Jewel reduces the risk of digestive upset, supports optimal muscle function, maintains stamina, and helps horses recover faster after hard work, all while providing the calories your horse needs to thrive.

The fat found in rice bran is an extraordinary source of dietary energy. In fact, fat contains more than two times the energy that carbohydrates and proteins do, thereby fueling horses more efficiently. Fat is considered a “cool” feedstuff because it does not cause the hormone spikes that lead to excitability. Adding Equi-Jewel rice bran to your horse’s diet allows you to decrease the amount of starchy concentrates (grains) you feed, reducing the risk of colic and laminitis resulting from grain overload. Equi-Jewel is an excellent source of calories for horses on low-sugar and low-starch diets.

The horse that matters to you matters to us®.

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Illinois Edition

How about a little Midwest love this week for our OTTB Wishlist presented by Cosequin? The fine folks of CANTER Illinois have listed a number of really good looking horses recently and frankly, they’re really too pretty not to share with you all!

All of this week’s featured horses are located at Fairmount Park Race Track in Collinsville, Illinois, which sits just east of the Mississippi River and a stone’s throw from St. Louis, Missouri.

Purrfect Kitten (FOREST ATTACK – TWO HEARTS DREAM, BY KITTEN’S JOY): 2015 16-0 hand Illinois-bred gelding

Purrfect Kitten could be your perfect match if your looking for a fancy little partner for the future. After 15 starts and no wins, Purrfect Kitten’s connections are hoping he’ll shine a little brighter in a different career and we think his odds are pretty good. He has a really nicely balanced build and those four while socks are seriously eye catching. His jog videos show an over tracking walk and trot that could have the potential to get some great marks in the first phase in the future.

Holyhoot (CHEROKEE RAP – LAST HOOT, BY BIANCONI): 2011 16.0-hand Illinois-bred mare

Just look at that face! Holyhoot looks like a real sweetheart and her connections confirm that assumption. She’s an easy to handle gal with good manners who’s been around the track a bit. With 47 starts and $79,614 won, Holyhoot has very nearly reached warhorse status and has clearly been a great athlete for her owners. At 8-years-old she still has plenty left in the tank to impress in a second career as well.

Nafirs Best (CHEROKEE RAP – NAFIR (GB), BY MARK OF ESTEEM (IRE)): 2009 16.3-hand Illinois-bred gelding

Warhorse alert! Nafirs Best really did put his best hoof forward throughout his race career as he racked up 12 first-, 20 second-, and 15 third-place finishes for a career total of $106,156 in winnings. This season, he just hasn’t come out of the gate with quite the same zest as he’s had before and hasn’t had any top finishes in 2019. As you’d expect from a warhorse he has excellent manners and a laid-back been-there-done-that attitude, but he also has plenty of spunk left and certainly doesn’t deserve to be passed over for a chance to rekindle his athletic abilities in a second career.

Monday Video: Where’s Hwin?

“Where’s Hwin?” is a question Elisa Wallace admits to often being asked. From 2015 Mustang Magic top-ten finisher to Preliminary level eventer to real life Breyer horse, Hwin has been a staple in the Wallace Eventing barn, and she’ll continue to be — she’s just taken a bit of a backseat on the competition front in recent years (though Elisa has hinted that hopefully we’ll see her out and about more!) She did, however, make an appearance at the Georgia Open Mustang Show this past weekend.

The now 10-year-old mare has greyed out considerably since we last saw her about, with her mane changing from a deep pewter to snow white over the years, but it seems that she certainly hasn’t lost any of her spark. Elisa brought a herd of five to the Georgia Open Mustang Show, competing with her previous Makeover mustangs Rune and Fledge plus Hwin in freestyles and her new horses Wyeth and Eton in the Trainer Incentive Program (TIP) Challenge. Sit back and enjoy their performances!

Go Eventing.

Two weeks after spinal surgery following his fall at Hampton Classic Horse Show, Kevin Babington is alert and recovering but still has a very long road of rehabilitation ahead. The show jumper is currently unable to move, but but maintains a positive attitude and is able to mouth words and communicate as a tracheotomy hinders his speech. Whether or not limb function returns to any degree will be determined by whether the swelling around his spinal cord decreases. The equestrian world has continued to rally around and support Kevin and hopes for the very best outcome for him. [Babington Remains Positive Following Spinal Injury]

Doug Payne Takes Advanced Win at Inaugural Blue Ridge Mountain H.T. at TIEC

Doug Payne is no stranger to the Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), so it seems fitting that he would take the win in the Advanced section of the first annual Blue Ridge Mountain Horse Trials at TIEC, held Sept. 14-15 at TIEC in Mill Creek, North Carolina, aboard his own and Susan Drillock’s Quantum Leap.

The 8-year-old Holsteiner gelding made his Advanced level debut earlier this year at Pine Top and has since then primarily been competed at the CCI4*-S level. Doug has managed to consistently improve on the horse’s first phase performance over the summer and yesterday the pair turned in their first sub-30 performance at the level to sit in third place after dressage.

The Advanced horse trials competitors took centerstage for “Saturday Night Lights”  in the Tyron Stadium show jumping late yesterday evening. Doug’s experience moonlighting as a show jumper proved helpful as he was the only one in the division to post a double clear round, moving him into second place overall.

Cross country took place this morning on TIEC’s White Oak property, which played host to the cross country phase of last year’s World Equestrian Games (WEG). In fact, all divisions of the Blue Ridge Mountain H.T. ran on the White Oak Course today. Posting the fastest time of the day over the Captain Mark Phillips-designed course secured Doug and Quantum the win on a final score of 40.60.

Watch the videos above and below and you’ll recognize a few iconic landmarks and fences from WEG!

Allison Springer held a one-two lead with both her rides headed into the show jumping phase under the lights. Katie Lichten’s Sapphire Blue B, a 9-year-old gray Irish Sport Horse who simply sparkled under the Tryon Stadium lights, jumped a clear round just one second over time under Allison to eventually end their weekend in second place overall with 51.70 penalty points.

Unfortunately, the immensely talented but tricky first-placed Business Ben, a 9-year-old Thoroughbred owned by the Business Ben Partnership, took a number of rails to slip down the leaderboard.

Allison Springer and Sapphire Blue B. Photo via Tryon International Equestrian Center on Facebook.

Rounding out the top three is Ema Klugman and 17-year-old Bendigo, owned by Jeni Klugman, who moved up to yellow-ribbon position after initially beginning their weekend in seventh-place following dressage. They also show jumped with just one time penalty and delivered the second fastest time of the day across the country to end their weekend on a score of 52.40.

3 Reasons to Hit the Sales and Go Helmet Shopping Today

In 2010, Allison Springer was the first person to wear a helmet in the dressage phase at the Kentucky Three-Day event. She’s picture here in 2014 on Arthur. Photo by Jenni Autry.

It’s International Helmet Awareness Day (well, International Helmet Awareness Weekend, really) and it’s the perfect time to go shopping for a new brain bucket, should you be in the market. Each year, Riders4Helmets partners with helmet manufacturers to offer deep discounts on their headwear via retailers around the world.

Here at EN, we’re big proponents of minding your melon each and every ride. We’re also cash-strapped horse-poor crazy people who, despite measly checking account balances, still can’t pass up a good sale. Though safety is nothing to skimp on anyway, the enticement of up to 25% off is particularly alluring and we wouldn’t want you to miss out on such great deals.

Here are three reasons/ reminders why you might need to go helmet shopping today:

1. You’ve fallen (or your helmet has otherwise been impacted.)

This should be a no-brainer (pun very much intended), but if your helmet has hit the ground or otherwise been whacked real good then it needs to be replaced regardless of whether or not it shows signs of damage. Any impact can compromise the integrity of the helmet by crushing the layer of foam inside — that’s what it’s designed to do after all. So even though you might not see a crack or dent, the level of protection that your helmet provides might not be as great during the next impact it takes, which means your head it more at risk.

2. Your helmet has reached it’s expiration date.

There’s not exactly a crystal clear expiration date stamped on your helmet like there is on a can of beans from the grocery store (not that those are always crystal clear either, but that’s beside the point here) but the general consensus is that helmets have a lifespan of 3 to 5 years from the manufacture date, which can be found on a tag inside your helmet. Like all plastics, the materials that make up your helmet degrade over time, meaning your helmet offers less protection as time wears on. Inadequate storage of your helmet, such as in a hot car, can also accelerate the degradation of plastics and cause your helmet to ‘expire’ sooner.

3. You’ve been eyeballing the latest and greatest.

Maybe your current helmet is still perfectly good, but you’re ready for a little upgrade — excellent! Now is the time to treat yo ‘self and save some of that hard-earned cash while you’re at it. Are you looking to get in on the rose gold trend? Or maybe you’re ready to add a little bling to your look (hellooo, glittery One K!) Maybe you want to outfit yourself in the newest technology, MIPS (which to be be fair, isn’t actually a new technology, it’s just being newly adopted in equestrian helmets.)

Whatever you’ve got it mind, go shopping and go eventing (with a helmet!)

‘Be Brave, Be Positive and Be Very Attacking’: Burghley Winner Pippa Funnell Analyzes her Cross Country Ride

Pippa Funnell’s Winners Analysis. Don’t forget you can now catch up with all of last weekends action on our website.https://burghley-horse.co.uk/live-video

Posted by The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Official Page on Saturday, September 14, 2019

“Coming into the start box I had Chris Bartle, our team trainer, telling me to get my act together to really go for it. There was only one way to ride this course, and that was be brave, be positive and be very attacking.”

That advice, recounted by Pippa Funnell after her 2019 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials win, proved to be spot on considering we saw riders who tackled Captain Mark Phillips‘ 2019 track in a forward, positive manner be rewarded with good distances and clear rounds throughout the day.

Though Pippa and MGH Grafton Street, owned by Jonathan and Jane Clarke, led the competition after the first phase, she admitted to being not so sure where they would be sitting among the standings on Saturday evening, citing the incredibly talented gelding’s comedian-like antics which had led to less-than-consistent performances across the country in previous outings.

So how exactly did our heroine pilot the tricky 11-year-old all the way from the start box to the finish flags, delivering a clear and fast round in the horse’s first five-star? Now we know! This must-watch video of “Squirrel” and Pippa’s complete round is a real masterclass as Pippa talks us through how she rode each and every fence and why. What a treat to be able to hear her analysis of the ride!

Bromont Rising Program Comes to Ocala: Grants Offered for OJC International Three-Day Event

The Ocala Jockey Club Arch. Photo by Jenni Autry.

Good news for under-25 eventers! After the highly successful debut of the MARS Bromont Rising Program, which offered financial aid and training to eventers under the age of 25 competing at the MARS Equestrian Bromont Three-Day Event in June, it has been announced that the program will also be offered at the Ocala Jockey Club (OJC) International Three-Day Event this fall.

The program will once again offer a $3,000 grant to offset the costs of travel and competition for 10 under-25 riders competing in any of the divisions at the Ocala Jockey Club International Three-Day Event. Additionally, the recipients of the grant will also receive two days of training sessions at the beautiful Mardanza Farms.

“With the support of MARS Equestrian, we were able to put together this new program for younger riders who are not part of any grant or training program,” said FEI dressage judge and trainer, Peter Gray, who runs the program. “It was always our vision to expand the program to venues beyond Bromont – provided it worked.”

“Our experience in June was overwhelmingly positive,” Peter continued. “The results and feedback from the participants in the first Bromont Rising Program speak for themselves. Most of the participants had their personal best dressage scores at Bromont, and one of the participants, Brooke Massie, went on to win the Bromont CCI4*-S in her first time at the level. All participants were extremely grateful for the opportunity provided by the training and grant program.”

The training sessions prior to the start of the event will consist of mounted and unmounted instruction from leading coaches and clinicians, including Peter himself for dressage plus Sara Kozumplik Murphy and Brian Murphywho make their home for the winter at Mardanza Farms, for cross country and show jumping. Coaching at the event will also be available to the grant recipients.

“The MARS Bromont Rising Program is an exciting way to allow young riders an opportunity to ride at our event and develop their skills at an accelerated pace with excellent coaching”, said Pavla Nygaard, Ocala Jockey Club’s President.

Click here to download the application. They’re due by September 30th so get cracking, kids! The Ocala Jockey Club International Three-Day Event will take place November 14-17, 2019 in Reddick, Florida. For more information about the event, visit their website here.

This past week is has really just started to feel like the emergence of fall. I’ve seen some orange and red leaves on the ground here and there, the nights are starting to get just a little chilly, and, oh yes, my horse is starting to spook at everything. Literally. She spooked at blades of grass gently blowing in the wind during our hack yesterday evening. I love fall weather, truly, but save the spiciness for the seasonal lattes, please.

Connections React to Story on Justify Failing Drug Test

This Week in Horse Health News Presented by MediVet Equine

Imogen Murray and Ivar Gooden won the Best Shod Horse award at Burghley. Photo by Tilly Berendt.

This week’s biggest headline in horse health news is so big that you may have already heard it the mainstream media. You’ll certainly want to catch up on that crazy story, but don’t miss our the other interesting tidbits from this week as well, presented by MediVet Equine; in addition to news that’s rocking the racing industry, scroll down and read on to learn a little about the best shod horse at Burghley, how your horse might be eligible for a free Cushing’s Disease test, and a word of caution to anyone planning to travel to Ohio.

This Week in Horse Health News …

The 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify tested positive for a banned substance in a qualifier race before the Kentucky Derby, the New York Times reports.

Justify tested positive for scopolamine, a drug which is used to treat motion sickness and nausea in humans and can act a bronchodilator in horses, enlarging their airways to making breathing more efficient and potentially enhancing performance. The drug test sample was collected when Justify won the Santa Anita Derby and the positive result should have disqualified him to run in the Kentucky Derby, but the California Horse Racing Board eventually dismissed the case.

Horses can test positive for scopolamine due to ingestion of jimson weed (also known as devil’s snare — yes, like in Harry Potter)  which can sometimes be found in straw bedding or hay, and there have been previously documented cases of this happening, however, horses tend to avoid it’s foul odor and bitter taste. The lab results also indicated that the amount of scopalamine detected in Justify’s sample was much higher than they likely would have if they were caused by environmental contamination/ accidental ingestion. [The New York Times]

Ivar Gooden, ridden by Imogen Murray, was awarded the prize for Best Shod Horse at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials last weekend. The annual prize honors the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the farrier who shod the winning horse. Ivar Gooden’s farrier, Paul Varnam, took a forward-thinking approach to shoeing the 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding and used hand-forged therapeutic shoes, which would traditionally only be used to help a lame horse, to help the very sound but somewhat conformationally challenged Ivar Gooden achieve optimum balance. This is the horse and farrier’s second time earning this award and you’ll need to be sure to read Fran Jurga’s full report on The Hoof Blog for all the details on Ivar Gooden’s very fascinating footwear hoofwear. [The Hoof Blog]

Attention horse owners in Canada! Your horse may be eligible to receive a free Equine Cushing’s Disease test thanks to Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Equine in partnership with Guelph Animal Health Laboratory. Cushing’s Disease, or Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), is primarily thought of as a disease of senior horses or ponies, but it actually affect horses as young as 10 years old. As one of the main causes of laminitis, the debilitating disease of the hoof which is the second leading cause of death in horses after colic, it’s important diagnose Cushing’s Disease as early as possible so that it can be well controlled. When caught early, risk of laminitis can be minimized and prognosis can be very good. [Boehringer Ingelheim Equine]

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) is restricting the import of horses from counties within states with confirmed and suspected cases of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). Though there have been no confirmed cases of VSV in Ohio, the state decided that, with a significant uptick in incoming equine traffic anticipated due to the All American Quarter Horse Congress scheduled to begin in the city of Columbus on Oct. 1, they would take every precaution to keep the state VSV-free. Though the main focus of this restriction is the influx of horses due to the All American Quarter Horse Congress it appear that it applies to any horses moving into or through the state, so do use caution if you plan to go eventing in Ohio! [Horses From VSV-Affected Areas Banned From American Quarter Horse Congress]

Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin: Don’t Change That Name

Just admit it, the very first thing you notice when you’re perusing off-track Thoroughbreds is their Jockey Club name. Is it as important as their conformation or temperament? Of course not! Does it have any bearing on their ability to go on to succeed in a second career? No way. Is it still fun to have a horse with a funny or cool Jockey Club name that can be used for a USEA-registered name too? Heck yeah!

For this week’s OTTB Wishlist we found three horses with kind of silly names that we can’t help but enjoy and, oh yeah, they look like they could have future eventer potential as well!

Margarita Attack. Photo via CANTER IL.

Margarita Attack (FOREST ATTACK – SISTER FIONA, BY DEFRERE): 2015 16.1-hand Illinois-bred mare

Honestly, who wouldn’t want to be attacked by margaritas? Doesn’t really sound like a bad thing to me, and it does sound like a very good excuse to partake in everyone’s favorite limey cocktail after a good (or bad) cross country round.

This four-year-old filly has a modest race record of 20 starts and $12,785 in earnings. She has finished dead last in her last two start, the most recent of which was last week, so her future as a racehorse clearly isn’t looking so bright. However, her lovely uphill build suggests she could have some innate jumping ability and her job video shows a nice flowing walk and trot plus demonstrates her easy-going attitude.

Located at Fairmount Park Race Track in Collinsville, Illinois.

Lost on the Stairs. Photo via CANTER Delaware.

Lost on the Stairs (SOARING EMPIRE – ALS DELIGHT, BY WAYNE COUNTY (IRE)): 2014 16.1-hand New York-bred mare

How would one even get lost on the stairs? There are only two directions, up and down, so it seems pretty straightforward to me. Unless we’re talking about some wonky M.C. Escher-esque stairs I suppose, then getting lost would be pretty understandable. (Ooo … “Escher”… that could be a good barn name for this one, no?)

This is another lovely mare with a good shoulder and uphill build, just waiting for a little TLC and a transition to a new career. She also has 20 career starts, but has earned slightly more than the above featured horse, at $58,062. Her last race was in June, but she’s actually entered in another race later this week so she is currently still in active race training.

Not a Coupon (FAPPIE’S NOTEBOOK – ESTHERS BALL, BY PARTY MANNERS): 2014 17.0-hand Kentucky-bred gelding

If he’s not a coupon, then I guess he must be the real deal, right?

If you love a tall, big-boned mount then this gentle-giant with nice sport horse lines is for you. As a personable gelding who’s easy to work with, Not A Coupon is a favorite of his handlers. He is sound and even trains very well during his morning workout, but doesn’t perform as well when it comes down to actually racing so it’s time for him move on. He’s made 33 total starts in his career and earned $26,966. His trainer jokes that he’s very forward thinking … when it comes to moving towards the grass for hand-grazing time!

Wednesday Video from Kentucky Performance Products: Beast Around Burghley with Sarah Bullimore

Thank you Blou, what a machine! Don’t need to say anything else.Lying 5th now after XC at Burghley Horse Trials. #hugs #horsesofinstagram

Posted by Bullimore Eventing on Saturday, September 7, 2019

Great Britain’s Sarah Bullimore had a ride to remember across Captain Mark Phillips’ Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials cross country course aboard Rev Du Rouet and she has shared the helmet cam view of her ride on her Facebook page, so click here to go and watch!

Buckle up and enjoy a clear round behind the pricked ears of “Blou,” a 15-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Chris and Sue Gillespie. Adding just 10 time penalties to their dressage score meant the pair moved up from 11th after dressage to 5th after cross country. A double clear show jumping round the following day then meant finishing the competition in 4th place on a score of 39.6.

This past weekend’s finish at Burghley marks the pair’s twelfth five-star completion together, with other notable finishes being a 5th place finish at Luhmühlen earlier this year, a matching 4th place at last year’s Burghley and a 2nd place finish at Pau in 2017. After a long partnership, the pair’s hard work seems to be paying off in spades and we’re excited to see what they can conquer next!

Operation Find Pippa’s Hat Silk has been accomplished! The search for the Burghley winner’s beloved helmet cover, which she’s had for 30 years, is over as it has been returned by a good Samaritan. I don’t know about you, but I felt quite emotionally invested in the outcome of this search.

Despite, in her own words, looking like an “egg head” with her naked helmet while riding most of the course, having her hat silk flying the coop was one of what seemed to be several good omens over the weekend, since the same thing happened when she won Badminton on Primmore’s Pride in 2005, her last major win at the five-star level.

Yeah, we still have Funnell fever. Is that so wrong? Just in case you forgot what makes her such a legend, Horse & Hound put together a lovely list of the moments and horses that make up her storied career. [All hail Pippa Funnell! 18 moments that helped define her stellar career]

Cross country: it’s the whole reason we do this thing called eventing, but do you remember all the rules? Take a second to refresh your memory before the next time you head out of the start box! [Rule Refresher: The Cross-Country Test]

There is another opportunity to qualify your YEH entry for the Championship at Fair Hill International! Flora Lea H.T. in Medford, New Jersey, was asked by several competitors to hold another qualifier this Friday, Sept. 13th. For those interested in participating, entries may still be made to Debbie Adams at Flora Lea. Email [email protected]. [Flora Lea Farm]

Monday Video from Total Saddle Fit: Ride Key Combinations at Burghley with Doug Payne

Burghley debutante Doug Payne and didn’t quite have the weekend he wanted aboard Vandiver, but we can always count on him for a good helmet cam video and he didn’t let us down!

Doug and the fifteen-year-old Trakehner gelding (Windfall II x Visions of Grandeur) owned by himself, Jessica Payne, and the horse’s breeder Debi Crowley, were having quite a foot-perfect round up until they ran into trouble at fence 13ABCD, Joules at the Maltings, the giant white oxers and open corners that dashed the hopes and dreams of many other pairs as well.

A formidable team, Doug and “Quinn” will be back to fight another day and we can’t wait to see them tackle their next big course. Until then, Doug is taking us along for the ride through several of the key combinations on this year’s Burghley cross country course.

Above, they take us through the first combination on course: an ABC element through the main arena. Once you’ve ridden through that combination, click the arrow on the right of the Instagram post to ride through Discovery Valley going out and back.

Take a trip through the Leaf Pit next, but before you click that arrow to the right again and drop off the Leaf Pit yourself, first take a look at Doug and wife Jess’ adorable son Hudson enjoying the ride!

Finally, it’s through the tricky Trout Hatchery we go, and just about as smoothly as could be at that:

The U.S. contingent at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials did us all proud in more ways than one this weekend. In my post-Burghley social media stalking I came across this Facebook post from Dom Schramm, our U.S.-based Aussie who we’ve really just been claiming as our own all weekend. Before you continue on with your Monday, I implore you to read his post in its entirely, as it’s quite poignant.

In addition to reflecting on the performances of his fellow riders he touches on being welcomed as a part of the American tribe, despite riding under a different flag. Many could learn a thing or two from that simple gesture from his competitors; that inclusivity is what really makes America — and eventing — great.

Your Monday News & Notes:

Two show jumping horses in Spain tested positive for a banned substance due to contaminated hay. The substance, which causes vasorestriction and increases heart rate, occurs naturally in plants in some countries and is commonly used in humans to suppress appetite. An FEI tribunal ruled that the riders of the horses were not responsible for the drug entering their horses systems and will not face punishment. Starstruck and Awestruck: Your Day Two Burghley Social Media Roundup

You know you’ve really made it when a celebrity comments on your social media, right? The EN Team was just a wee bit starstruck yesterday when we saw that the one and only Pippa Funnel had commented on this Instagram post:

Not only can the woman ride, but she has a hell of a sense of humor and maybe a little hidden talent as a songwriter, referencing her error of course in the final halt during yesterday’s ride on Billy Walk On. Good on you, Pippa! Consider us #blessed.

But as if that wasn’t exciting enough, it was pretty phenomenal to wake up this morning on the East Coast and check the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials leaderboard to see two U.S. flags sitting pretty at the top! Though the day was young and there was still some shuffling of the leaderboard yet to be seen, we’ve got three Americans sitting in the top ten ahead of cross country. Dare we say, it was a rather exciting day of dressage all around.

Exciting … dressage … two words not normally used together, but hey, no complaints here. Take a look behind the scenes of dressage day two and scroll further down for a close-up of the cross country course:

This Week in Horse Health News Presented by MediVet Equine

With a number of horses (12, to be exact) having been flown over from the U.S. to the U.K. ahead of the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials this week, a question that may be in the back of your mind is: Can horses get jet lag?

The short answer is yes, they can. However, like many things concerning horses, it’s a little more complex than just one simple answer. Just like humans, horses have a circadian rhythm governed by light-dark cycles and disruptions to the light-dark cycle disturb the circadian rhythm and cause the feelings of jet lag. But a horse’s circadian rhythm can be a little less influenced by light-dark cycle than humans, and a little more influenced by feeding times and exercise patterns. It’s possible that horses might have a much easier time overcoming the jet lag phenomenon for those reasons, but maintaining a regular circadian rhythm still helps to keep a horse at their healthiest and peak performance. [The Horse]

Now, let’s get to a few more of this week’s headlines in horse health news, presented by MediVet Equine:

If your horse is crooked, it might not necessarily mean that he’s unsound — it might just be the the way he is. Researchers from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and The Royal Veterinary College in the U.K. used a Lameness Locator to definitively show that a group of healthy horses moved asymmetrically even though their owners/ riders perceived them to be sound. They then administered some of the horses a common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory to see if it helped them move more evenly by relieving pain, but found that it made no significant improvement.

So what was causing the horses to move asymmetrically? There are a number of different reasons, but gait asymmetry could be a “non-painful expression of biological variation” (meaning, it’s just the way the horse is) or some painful reason that isn’t responsive to anti-inflammatories. Clear as mud, right? See above about there being no one simple answer for horses! [The Hoof Blog]

Horse Nation tested different thrush remedy products so you don’t have to! Bacterial or fungal infection of the frog or sulci of a horse’s hoof — commonly known as thrush — are nasty, stinky and can be tough to get rid of. Not only is a thrush-stricken hoof unsightly and smelly, but in thrush can even cause lameness if it gets severe enough so it’s best to try and nip it in the bud before it progresses. There are a lot of different commercial thrush remedy products on the market and Horse Nation editor DeAnn Sloan tried a few and knows which one works best. [Horse Nation]

America vs. Burghley: The U.S. Contingent’s Myriad Paths to Britain’s Fall Five-Star

Ain’t no rest for the weary. Now that the American Eventing Championships and the FEI Eventing European Championships are done and dusted it’s onto the next! Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, taking place this coming Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 5-8, is next on the agenda and we’re extra excited to cheer on our 11 Americans (plus one American-based Aussie!) who will be testing their mettle against other fierce competitors over one of the toughest tracks in the world.

Over the past few weeks, this year’s extra-large herd of U.S. Burghley-bound horses began their journey across the pond, and of course their paths to Big Bad Burghley trace back much further than that. Let’s take an extra look at how our gang has traveled and prepped this event.

An Irish Warm-Up for Liz and Ariel

Two of our riders may be hoping that a little luck of the Irish would rub off on them after using the Millstreet International Horse Trials in Ireland, which took place Aug. 21-25, as a prep-run.

Great Britain-based American Liz Halliday-Sharp rode four horses in various divisions including the Burghley-bound Deniro Z, owned by the Deniro Syndicate & Ocala Horse Properties, in the non-Event Rider Masters CCI4*-S. The 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Zapatero VDL x Zonne-Trend, by French Buffet xx) turned in clear jumping rounds with some (likely planned) time.

Love these photos of three perfect ponies jumping super clear SJ rounds in the Millstreet CCI4*S 😍❤️#CarpeDiem…

Posted by Liz Halliday on Friday, August 30, 2019

Also taking a crack at the Millstreet CCI4*-S as their Burghley lead up was Ariel Grald and Annie Eldridge’s 10-year-old gelding Leamore Master Plan. This pair were five-star rookies earlier this year but ran around Kentucky as professionally as anyone to secure a 12th place finish.

Ariel is the recipient of this year’s Jacqueline B. Mars International Grant through the USET Foundation, which is helping to fund her overseas travel. “Simon” traveled to Ireland alongside Will Faudree’s Pfun, who are not competing at Burghley, but instead took on the Millstreet CCI4*-L. The pair of Irish Sport Horses hopped a plane from Chicago in the middle August and made the pilgrimage to their homeland from there. With their sights set on their big event ahead, Ariel and Simon also clocked a clear-with-time cross country ride plus a double clear show jumping round.

In the interim between Millstreet and Burghley, Ariel and Simon have been staying at Mike and Emma Winter’s Wayfarer Eventing facility and enjoying the amenities there.

Simon enjoyed a light jump school this morning at @wayfarereventing1! He’s on springs 🦘🐎 I’m looking forward to the week ahead!

Savannah’s Semester Abroad

Savannah “Woodge” Fulton and her little OTTB powerhouse Captain Jack have been based in Germany with Dirk Schrade since February of this year and have gained a plethora of European eventing experience over the past few months, including adding a Badminton completion to their resume this spring. So when they set foot and hoof on the grounds of Burghley house to take their second crack at the event, they’ll have miles more experience under their belts than they had two years ago.

Not that lack of experience was a problem that year — they posted a clear-with-time cross country round, but the gelding acquired a cut on his hind leg somewhere on course and Woodge withdrew him before the second horse inspection. This year she’ll be looking to cash in that completion that she knows they can do.

Cappy Jack has arrived!

The Busiest Man in Eventing: Buck

Buck Davidson has been a busy, busy man over the past few weeks. After riding six horses at Great Meadow International the weekend prior he took another couple to the AECs this week. Burghley-bound Jak My Style, owned by Kat and Roberto Cuca, took flight last Wednesday alongside stablemates Park Trader and Carlevo who are both Blenheim-bound. With all the traveling that Buck was doing himself, he needed a little extra help from team BDJ to keep his British-bound horses fighting fit so “Jak” got a couple prep rides with Bruce Davidson in the irons. How’s that for a secret weapon?

When your Burghley prep includes rides from the legendary Bruce Davidson, you know you’re ready for anything! 💪 #GoJak The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Official Page

Posted by Kathleen Raye Cuca on Saturday, August 24, 2019

The 12-year-old Thoroughbred was originally supposed to run at Kentucky and even completed the dressage, but a broken collarbone sustained by Buck after falling from his first ride across country mean he couldn’t compete his remaining two horses, one of which was Jak, that weekend. An exciting trip to Burghley will now serve as the horse’s five-star debut.

Travel Buddies: Doug and Will

It looks like Doug Payne’s Vandiver and Will Coleman’s Tight Lines have become great travel buddies on their road, er, flight path to Burghley.

Doug Payne is quite familiar with airplanes — he has his pilot’s license and has been known to fly himself to clinics — and this was Vandiver’s second time on a plane, having made a trip to Blenheim in 2017.

Vandiver, a 15-year-old Trakehner gelding (Windfall 2 x Visions of Grandeur, by Mystic Replica XX) owned by Doug and Jessica Payne alongside his breeder Debi Crowley, had a super 5th place finish in “Quinn’s” five-star debut at Kentucky this year. A rider fall at the pair’s most recent outing, the CCI4*-S at Great Meadow International a couple weekends back, was ill-timed, but this pair’s otherwise solid recent cross country record will stand them in good stead for Burghley. This is far from Doug’s first overseas competition, and it’s been just over a month since he helped Team USA earn Pan Ams gold in Peru, but it will be his first time running Burghley.

The last time Tight Lines (known as “Phish” around the barn) traveled abroad, it was in 2014 when Will got the ride. The 12-year-old French-bred Thoroughbred (Turgeon x Merindole, by Tel Quel), owned by The Conair Syndicate, previously competed in his native country up to the CCI2*-L level before being imported. Will brought Twizzel here in 2011 but withdrew before dressage; he completed Burghley with a clean cross country in 2003 with Fox in Flight.

Will and Phish secured a 13th place finish at Kentucky this year, despite incurring a controversial 15 penalties assessed for missing a flag cross country. They took it easy on the cross country clock at Great Meadow International, placing 13th in their final Burghley preparation. The universe needs to cut this deserving pair a break already — fingers crossed that it all comes together for them this week.

Third Time’s A Charm: Andrea, Lillian and Hannah Sue

This will be the third Burghley in a row for both Andrea Baxter and Lillian Heard.

West Coast pair Andrea Baxter and Indy 500, her own 14-year-old Thoroughbred mare (Cromwell X Tensofthousands, by Spend A Buck), first contested Burghley in 2017. They parted ways cross country, but redeemed themselves the following year, finding the finish flags despite a runout at the Leaf Pit and finishing 36th. (Read more in our follow-up story from last year, “Andrea Baxter’s Burghley Redemption Plan with Indy 500.”) Now they’re back for a third crack at the event after an 18th place result at Kentucky and a 5th in the Rebecca Farm CCI4*-L.

Likewise, Lillian Heard has been bettering her result with each success crack at Burghley. She and LCC Barnaby, her own Irish Sport Horse gelding (Guy Cavalier x Lady Tanjour, by Rafael), fell at the Leaf Pit in 2017, then rallied to finish just one place behind Andrea in 2018, having picked up 20 and some time. This year they were 16th at Kentucky and 6th in the Bromont CCI4*-S in August.

Barnaby was a beast! Footing was perfect. Course was incredible. Bromont is the place to be this weekend! I went slow with my sights on a “slightly” bigger and longer cross country course in England in 3 weeks but I couldn’t have asked for a better prep event.

2019 marks Hannah Sue Burnett‘s third crack at Burghley as well. After a clear-with-time cross country in 2014, she withdrew Harbour Pilot before show jumping. She brought her string over for the summer of 2017 for the whole tour of Badminton<Houghton<Barbury Castle<Luhmühlen<Aachen<Millstreet<Burghley<Blenheim with some terrific results, including finishing 8th at Luhmühlen with Harbour Pilot, but Burghley didn’t quite go her way — she fell from Under Suspection at the Dairy Mound. The experienced pair returns this week with more mileage under their belt than ever and some great results, including an 11th place finish at Kentucky and a solid run at their final outing at Great Meadow.

Burghley by Way of Canada: Dom

Like Lillian, Dom Schramm looked to the August edition of Bromont for his final prep run with Bolytair B. Dom and the 13-year-old Dutch gelding (Polytair x Nobelle, by Glennridge) owned by Naked Horse Eventing Syndicate, were 3rd in the CCI4*-S.

“Boly” was imported in 2016 and had a very strong start to his stateside career with some top finishes including a win in his first FEI event with Dom, the CCI2*-L at Bromont that year. In 2017, Dom worked hard to campaign and fundraise for a trip to compete Boly overseas at Blenheim Palace that fall, but the horse sustained an injury one month before the event and thus they were unable to go. Boly lost his five-star virginity at Kentucky this spring and we can’t wait to see them stick it to the Burghley course.

Hey everyone! Last few days have been good! Boly settled right in at JP Sheffield’s place – a really nice quiet yard and…

A Return and a Rookie: Lauren and Chris

Lauren Kieffer and Veronica very nearly had a top finish in the bag at Burghley 2017 — they were second after dressage but 28 cross country time penalties dropped them down the leaderboard a ways for a final landing spot of 12th. She returns now with Vermiculus, Ms. Jacqueline Mars’s 11-year-old Anglo-Arabian gelding. The pair has cracked the top 10 at Kentucky for two years running, and Burghley will mark “Bugg’s” first trip abroad since they contested Blenheim in 2015. Their final prep run was at Great Meadow, where they too took it easy for a 14th place result.

Nice little jump school for the Buglet 🐜before heading to #burghleyhorsetrials tomorrow! Loving the #coolweather☁

Chris Talley and Unmarked Bills, a 10-year-old off-track Thoroughbred gelding (Posse x Kellis Ransom) owned by the Unmarked Bills Syndicate, made their five-star debut at Kentucky earlier this year, jumping cross country clear with time. “A few people who saw him at Kentucky mentioned that they thought Burghley would suit him, and it kinda stuck in my mind,” Chris told EN this summer of his decision to tackle Burghley. “He’s looking fantastic, and we’re working hard on his dressage and show jumping, and I figured while he’s at his peak we might as well give it a shot!”

After Billy spent a little bit of time spooking at the hose, a coffee cup and Hannah’s vest we had a very good school today with Hannah, followed by a canter up the gallop which I’m pretty sure he was hoping he could get to jump some of those big bad Burghley fences. (Sorry Billy, just a few more days and we tackle those!) He will have an easy day tomorrow followed by working through parts of the test Wednesday and Thursday. Hannah and I couldn’t be happier with how he feels heading into the week! #BillsToBurghley #ZaragozaAcres #UnmarkedBills

By the look of his Facebook updates, which include an abundance of tweed and at least one falcon, Chris has been packing in the authentic English countryside experience. Hey, when in England ….

Beautiful morning of English hunting and beautiful places thanks to the hospitality of Jane Thorpe-Codman!
