Stable View Farm’s Enhanced Social Distancing Procedures … a Model for the Future?

The maintenance of a 6′-distance between riders/grooms, officials/staff and volunteers is among Stable View Farms’s Enhanced Social Distancing Procedures. Photo courtesy of Christine Rhodes/Stable View.

As life begins creeping back toward some modicum of normalcy (fingers crossed), there are plenty of questions being raised about how our sport will move forward in the future. How to ensure that we are being responsible and diligent in its reopening — whenever that may be?

In the USEF’s announcement of the extension of their suspension of affiliated competition through May 31, the organization notes that it has been working to formulate a plan:

“Collaborating with competition organizers, affiliate leaders and other industry experts, USEF has been developing competition protocols for safely operating competitions and mitigating the risks associated with COVID-19. Once finalized, we will be providing all competition organizers with these protocols as well as other risk mitigation tools for their use.”

In the meantime, most equestrian venues have taken it upon themselves to create protocols that work for their situation. From social distancing, staggered visitation and sanitation measures to shutting down completely with the exception of essential personnel, best practices can vary widely from area to area.

But what about competition venues? Loosened restrictions in some states have given some a viable option to run schooling shows and open the doors to educational activities in the coming month.

In Aiken, SC, Stable View Farm currently has three schooling shows on the May calendar subject to the state of SC’s restrictions: a Schooling Dressage Show (May 13), Eventing Academy Schooling Day & Show (May 23-24) and a Schooling Hunter/Jumper Show (May 30). The venue’s next Recognized event is its USEA/USEF “Summer” Horse Trials, offering Beginner Novice through Advanced divisions, on June 19-21.

Stable View owner Barry Olliff recognizes the important role that his and other schooling events could play for horses and riders who, by the time USEF/USEA competitions resume, won’t have seen the inside of a start box since mid-March at the earliest. “This is logical — get your horse fit for a warm-up, then go for Recognized a month later,” he says.

But he also wants to keep safety paramount. Assuming his May schooling events go forward (as of Monday, April 27, they have been cleared by the South Carolina Department of Commerce), he and his team have developed a set of competition protocols that they are calling the Stable View Enhanced Social Distancing Procedures. The protocols would be published on Stable View’s website, and acceptance of them would be a condition of attending all events at the venue, both schooling shows and the June H.T.

The Stable View Enhanced Social Distancing Procedures are as follows:

Staff/officials will:

  • communicate via radio
  • agree to a remote thermometer temperature check
  • remain in cars whenever possible
  • observe 6′ distancing when interacting
  • wear masks if interacting closely with riders, officials, other staff, etc.
  • will be required to agree to these guidelines prior to the event

Riders/grooms will be:

  • asked to agree to guidelines upon arrival and emailed in advance
  • asked to agree to a remote thermometer temperature check
  • strongly encouraged to submit their entry online and in advance to limit paper exchange at the show office
  • 6′ distance when interacting with riders, volunteers, staff, or officials
  • stabling Social Distancing, with one way traffic
  • no rider lounges open (only restrooms which will have disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer)
  • asked to limit number of horses/riders in warm-up areas (volunteers will enforce)
  • asked to sanitize warm-up jumps, restroom handles, etc. after they’ve touched these things. Wipes and sanitizer will be provided by Stable View

Volunteers will:

  • check in via a “drive thru”
  • agree to a remote thermometer temperature check
  • communicate via radio
  • remain in their cars when possible
  • 6′ distancing when interacting
  • be required to agree to all guidelines prior to event
  • be provided with a pre-packaged lunch

All/general guidelines:

  • spectators strongly discouraged
  • riders/trainers to remain confined to their groups when possible (at stalls, in warm up areas, etc)
  • no food vendors on site
  • ride times will be scheduled farther apart when possible
  • wipes and sanitizer available around the property
  • no congregating
  • anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms will be asked to go home
  • consider employing extra medical staff on property

“We’ve developed these over the past two weeks and will continue to amend them as we listen to and take advice from medical practitioners, owners, riders and grooms,” he says. “While some might say that they are strict and potentially intrusive, we would say that this is unfortunately necessary in the environment we find ourselves today.”

“Our view is that if the following protocols are followed by everyone on the property that we will have achieved our objective, which is that attending a Stable View event would be safer than going to the grocery store,” Barry says.

Stable View’s protocols offer a thought-provoking proposal for what could become standard best practice for our sport … at least until the world gets back to “normal.”

Needs More Impulsion: Meika Decher’s At-Home Stick Horse Event

Meika Decher, an FEI level event rider who owns and operates Polestar Farm in Lake Stevens, Washington alongside her husband Mark Salser, is clearly missing the start box. So much so that she grabbed a broom, er “stick horse,” strapped on her helmet and safety vest, and headed out to tackle some cross country on foot.

Aside from banking nearly every jump, probably ruining her tall boots in the water complex, and I was sincerely concerned about an ACL tear when she headed for those drops, Meika found the finish flags … some 300 (goodness!) jump efforts later. She demonstrated pretty good rhythm throughout, although she could have used a little more leg at the base of some of those fences and her form definitely isn’t going to win any hunter classes anytime soon. But she showed us a lot of grit and determination, and isn’t that exactly what the world needs right now?

Thanks to everyone out there in the Eventing Nation working hard to keep the community’s spirits up in these trying times. Go Eventing!

Omega Alpha Kentucky Pick ‘Em Contest: Who WOULD Have Won LRK3DE? Readers Weigh In

Oliver Townend and Cooley Master Class, winners of the 2019 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

Last week we asked readers to share with us who they thought MIGHT have won the 2020 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event, and you guys had … many strong opinions. We entered all those picks into a random drawing for an Omega Alpha “Guts to Win” prize pack valued at $300 via EN’s 8th Annual Kentucky Pick ‘Em Contest, Presented by Omega Alpha.

Here were your top five picks to win:

Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg are clearly winning the popular vote right now for ALL the things — they also handily won our polls for “Best LRK3DE Cross Country Round of the Decade” and “Best LRK3DE Show Jumping Round of the Decade.” They’re certainly my write-in vote for the 2020 Presidential Election — who’s with me!?! #ThomasForPresident

A few other popular horse/rider combinations in our poll:

  • Allie Sacksen & Sparrow’s Nio
  • Allison Springer & Business Ben
  • Colleen Rutledge & Covert Rights
  • Caroline Martin & Islandwood Captain Jack
  • Cornelia Dorr & Sir Patico
  • Doug Payne & Vandiver
  • Elisa Wallace & Simply Priceless
  • Erin Sylvester & Paddy the Caddy
  • Frankie Thieriot Stutes & Chatwin
  • Fylica Barr & Galloway Sunrise
  • Hawley Bennett & Jollybo
  • Jessica Phoenix & Pavarotti
  • Kim Severson & Cooley Cross Border
  • Leah Lang & AP Prime
  • Liz Halliday-Sharp & Deniro Z
  • Mia Farley & Firecracker
  • Marilyn Little & RF Scandalous
  • Piggy French & Quarrycrest Echo
  • Sharon White & Cooley On Show

And, as always, there are the left-field picks — the equivalent of a write-in vote for Dolly Parton for President (I’d also be down for that!)

Some votes came in from the racing scene. I mean, a five-star event seems like a big ask for a three-year-old Thoroughbred who’s never jumped a single fence before, but there’s a first time for everything, #YOLO!

  • Drayden Van Dyke & Authentic
  • Joel Rosario & Man In The Can
  • Manny Franco & Tiz the Law

We had a handful of nostalgia picks …

  • David O’Connor & Giltedge
  • Karen O’Connor & Theodore O’Connor
  • Philip Dutton & True Blue Girdwood (we also got a vote for “P Dutty” and a “Phillip Dutton on whoever he entered”)

Some European leanings …

  • Michael Jung
  • Ingrid Klimke & Hale Bob
  • Not an American 🙁

And one write-in vote for a 14-hand pony named Rio Grande. Hey, Theodore O’Connor did it … dream big!

And the winner, by random drawing, was Grace Mull , whose (virtual) money was on Phillip Dutton and Z. Congrats!

Many thanks to Omega Alpha for sponsoring this contest, and for their support of Eventing Nation.

USEF Network LRK3DE Remix: Best Kentucky Show Jumping Round of the Decade?

Photos via the EN Archives.

It’s the final day of Virtual Kentucky! Sometimes I worry that I’m becoming a hardened journalist — following eventing is my day-in, day-out job, after all. But then it’s show jumping day at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event and by the top 10 my heart is in my throat and by the final round I’m blubbering like a baby, overwhelmed by emotion, and 100% reminded of just how much I love this sport.

I’m missing that experience today, as are so many in our community. Lucky for us, throughout this week USEF Network has been allowing us to take a road trip down memory lane, rebroadcasting footage of legend Kentucky performances from the past decades.

If you’re not already a USEF Member, you can use a special promo code for EN readers — ENLRK3DE — to watch all the videos for free!

We’ve been running reader polls to determine the best Kentucky performances of the past decade. For our dressage poll, the lead has been flipping flopping between Lauren Kieffer and Veronica (2016) and Allison Springer and Arthur (2014) — Allison currently has the edge by a few percentage points. No such ambiguity when it comes to cross country roundsBoyd Martin and Tsetserleg (2019) are running away with the popular vote by a landslide. Possible write-in vote overtake of the November 2020 presidential election? We shall see….

One more day, one more poll! Of the following show jumping rounds from 2011 to 2019: which do you think was the best?

Guess what? ALL of those rounds, along with many more, are available on the USEF Network website. Click on any image below to be taken to the video, or just head on over to USEF Network and go exploring yourself. You can even take a deep dive into ride reviews, favorite memories, interviews and other special features. Thank you for keeping the Kentucky spirit alive, USEF Network!

USEF Network LRK3DE Remix: Best Kentucky XC Round of the Decade?

Photos via the EN archives.

Ah, I know. We ought to have been out there today. Cheering riders on through hits and misses at the Head of the Lake. Getting our hearts broken when a legend takes a tumble, and then stitched back up again when a rookie takes the course by storm. Taking selfies with Chinch and imbibing mimosas and cookie cake at the EN tailgate.

But rather than dwell on what we’re missing, today is the day to celebrate what we’ve got — and that includes so many memories from Kentucky Three-Days past, still as polished and sparkling as the winner’s trophy. A mirror of our sport’s strength, resilience and spirit, and that of its human and equine athletes.

Lucky for us, throughout this week USEF Network is allowing us to take a road trip down memory lane, rebroadcasting footage of legend Kentucky performances from the past decades.

If you’re not already a USEF Member, you can use a special promo code for EN readers — ENLRK3DE — to watch all the videos for free! If you missed today’s re-broadcast of the 2012 event, with interviews throughout from John Kyle and featuring Boyd Martin and Allison Springer, check it out here. And it’s never too late (or too early) to sample Tilly Berendt‘s five-star inspired Kentucky tailgate cocktail recipes here!

The other day we ran a reader poll to vote for the best Kentucky dressage test of all time. The winner, by a fraction of a percentage point of the vote over Lauren Kieffer and Veronica in 2016, was Allison Springer and Arthur in 2014.

Let’s keep the ball rolling with a cross country poll. Of the following rounds from 2011 to 2019: which do you think was the best?

Guess what? ALL of those tests, along with many more, are available on the USEF Network website. SO luxe, and pragmatic, including this beautifully crafted ride holster that is perfect for trail riding, walking the dog or chasing their kids. I’ve been only semi-joking to my husband since we had our baby on Kentucky cross country day last April that I needed a fanny pack, as I’m CONSTANTLY losing my phone, my keys, my mind? — and how convenient would it be to just have the essential stuff strapped onto your person at all times. Doesn’t help the losing of my mind, but at least it’s a start!

Perri’s Leather: Speaking of top shelf leather goods, these suede zip half chaps from Perri’s Leather are only $30 (regularly $50.95) with code ZIP. You know Perri’s from their Kentucky booth — the one with the gorgeous Amish handcrafted halters and leads? Well these are their best-selling half-chaps, crafted from supple suede cowhide and featuring reinforced inner legs and stretch panels, which provide a near custom fit and help the chap form to your legs for peak performance and comfort. USEF/USEA Extend Suspension of Competitions Through May 31

The USEF has extended its suspension of competitions, which was most recently extended through May 3, through May 31. You can view a list of May USEA Horse Trials still on the calendar that this suspension will impact here. The USEA Board of Governors voted to follow suit and all USEA recognized events and educational activities are suspended through May 31, 2020.

USEF issued the following statement this morning:

“Dear USEF Members and Competition Organizers (Licensees and Managers),

“We continue to carefully monitor the COVID-19 Pandemic situation and the position of health experts, including the CDC and other public health authorities. It appears that in several areas of the country, restrictions put in place by State Governors, such as the “stay-at-home” orders, are making a positive difference. Federal, state and local governments are discussing plans for re-opening the environment in the near future. However, this will not occur overnight and will very likely consist of a graduated easing of restrictions over several weeks, which may vary greatly state-to-state, as well as within the states themselves.

“The success of these plans is predicated on a mindful and responsible approach to easing restrictions while also maintaining best practices that we have all learned and adopted in order to reduce exposure to and transmission of the COVID-19 virus. Once USEF competitions resume, we must all continue to support and maintain these best practices as part of our daily activities to help prevent further disruptions to our lives. We hope that resumption of competition comes soon.

“With that in mind, the suspension of all USEF owned and named events, selection trials, training camps, clinics and activities is being extended through May 31, 2020. This suspension also includes points, scores, money won, qualifications, or rankings toward any USEF award programs, USEF owned and named events, or selection to a US team including USEF National Championships. Upon the expiration of this suspension, competitions must comply with requirements issued by USEF for operating sport horse competitions in this environment.

“Collaborating with competition organizers, affiliate leaders and other industry experts, USEF has been developing competition protocols for safely operating competitions and mitigating the risks associated with COVID-19. Once finalized, we will be providing all competition organizers with these protocols as well as other risk mitigation tools for their use. These tools and resources will also be front-facing on our website and accessible by all members and website visitors.

“We have been working on amendments to qualification and selection processes for numerous USEF owned and named events as well as how USEF HOTY awards and ranking lists are calculated. We have started announcing modifications that will make the process as fair as possible for all participants, despite the disruption to the competition year and the likelihood of a staggered regional start-up.

“We have received inquiries as to whether USEF will grant exemptions to the junior competitor age restrictions, equine age restrictions and equine eligibility restrictions based on competitive experience. While these topics are being discussed, it is still too early to make definitive conclusions regarding these issues.

“We will continue to assess the pandemic impact, and we will keep you informed of any updates to our position as circumstances warrant or as instructed by the government and public health authorities.

“The safety and welfare of our members and their horses must continue to be our top priority.

“Stay safe,

William J. Moroney, Chief Executive Officer”

Editor’s Choice: My Top 5 Virtual Vendor Village Deals for Friday

Each day we’ll be bringing you new deals from over 30 companies via EN’s inaugural Virtual Vendor Village (shop Friday’s deals here), and each day I’ll be sharing my top five favorite deals of the day. Here we go for Friday!

P.S. You can check out Jumper Nation editor Lynn Mueller’s top 5 picks here, and Horse Nation editor DeAnn Long Sloan’s top 5 picks here.

Ride Heels Down: “X < Halt < Salute < Breathe” … um do they make this shirt in “size 14-hand pony”? Princess’ centerline mantra is more like “X < Halt-ish < Pitch a Fit < Pray Judge Has a Sense of Humor,” and she could use some zen in there.

Ride Heels Down founder Ainsley Jacobs is one of EN’s favorite bloggers — we’ve loved following her adventures (and misadventures) with JJ Spot, with whom she finished 7th at the USEA American Eventing Championships last year. We also love her cheeky tee-shirt designs, which have been on sale this week. You can check out the complete RHD collection here (there’s even a limited edition coronavirus line, love it). Here deal for today is for the above tee for 20% off; be sure to check back each day for new deals! We heart you Ainsley and look forward to seeing you and JJ back in the startbox soon.

Banixx:  On his annual Kentucky cross country course walks Jimmy Wofford is fond of referencing one of his many Jimmy-isms: “Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it.” I’d say something similar about equine skin infection products — you don’t need them until you NEED them, and by then it’s too late. The wise horse owner keeps skin infection products on hand, so that the moment your horse starts cooking some crud you can jump right on treating it immediately.

I’ve had fantastic experience with Banixx products, and in particular the Banixx Pet Care Bacterial & Fungal Infection Spray. I’ve kept it in my grooming kit, ready to go, this spring, so at the slightest hint of rain rot I was able to treat it from the get-go with a highly effective product.

Banixx products, which also include an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial shampoo and a wound care cream, are on sale this week via Valley Vet Supply — 10% off + free shipping at Valley Vet, and they’ll ship immediately! Click here.

For more information on Banixx Horse & Pet Care visit the website here. And be sure to check out their sponsored column right here on EN, written by the one and only Shellie Sommerson, each Thursday! We thank Jane and her team at Banixx for their continued support of EN.

Equine Therapy International: Event horses log hundreds of hours of conditioning work over the course of their careers. We set our watches and go pounding around the field, cranking out a carefully programmed agenda of trot and gallop sets. But the high level of fitness that is required for eventing also comes at the cost of extra wear and tear on our horses’ limbs.

With an underwater treadmill, there is a certain amount of weight reduction so you’re not having the concussive forces on the limbs. You get a longevity of the joint because you don’t have to work them as hard on dry land. Also, working in the water you can really get an exaggerated flexion so if you have stiff joints it helps with joint mobility. Not to mention the water resistance does amazing things for muscling as well as cardiovascular fitness.

I’ve seen tremendous benefits from using the treadmills with my own horses. Here’s some more #instaponyspam.

Today’s featured Activo-Med product is its Equine Water Treadmill, which at 15% off equals a deep discount on an incredible tool that will take your horses’ fitness to the next level and prolong the duration of their careers.

FLAIR Strips: I know we’re not competing now, but we’ll be back out there again someday soon-ish. Why not use the down time to restock your show trunk with all the stuff you KNOW you’re gonna need on down the road, especially if you can get a good deal on it now? FLAIR Strips are an eventing essential for respiratory performance; it’s increasingly rare to see an upper-level event horse running without one.

Gonna spam y’all again with another pic (I must be extra missing the barn today).

I went through a phase a few years ago where I thought it would look tough to match my horse’s FLAIR Strips with matching football eye black stickers.

This week FLAIR Strips are offering a discount at checkout with promo code LRK3DE. Thank you for the hookup and for your continued support of EN, FLAIR!

Tapestry Equine Products: The girth revolution is here and your horse wants you to get on board with it. The innovative, patented design of Tapestry Comfort Girths is the only girth on the market that “breathes” with your horse, improving comfort, performance, and competitiveness. The elastic is situated where the horse needs it, from the sternum up the ribcage offering expansion and comfort.

Linda Hauck, owner and innovator of Tapestry Equine Products, also innovated Spursuader Spurs. “The reason I developed this spur was in large part my experience riding sensitive horses, particularly Thoroughbreds,” she explains. “How they overreacted to a traditional spur, how some would get tense right away when they knew you were wearing a spur or watching a horse get inadvertently ‘spurred.’ That got me thinking that there must be another way to get our point across to the horse without offending or creating tension in that horse.”

This week you can take 10% off + free shipping with code LR2020 on all products from Tapestry Equine Products!

What’s Still Standing on the May USEA Event Calendar?

Texas Rose Horse Park Summer H.T. is still on the calendar for May 8-9. Photo by Leslie Wylie.

With the USEF and USEA’s suspension of events expiring on May 3 (unless they opt to extend it), and some parts of the country making plans to lift restrictions and reopen their economies, a few cautiously optimistic USEA horse trials remain on the May calendar. All of these but one, Texas Rose Horse Park H.T., are scheduled for the last weekend of the month.

The closing date for Texas Rose Horse Park Summer H.T. was Tuesday and the event is scheduled to take place in two weeks from now: May 8-9. The state of Texas has been on a stay-at-home order since April 2, with the order scheduled to expire on April 30 unless the governor elects to extend it. If gathering restrictions are put in place, that could prove a stumbling block for the event.

Here are updates for each USEA area:

Thursday Video from FLAIR: Quarantine Races – Boys vs. Chatwin

We’d love nothing more to see Frankie Thieriot Stutes and Chatwin cantering up the centerline at Kentucky this week. Or at the just canceled Luhmühlen, where they finished 4th last year. Or anywhere, really. Heck. Alas, it isn’t meant to be … but this video is a delightful consolation prize.

Frankie pitted son Drake and nephew Beaux against Chatwin for an impromptu race and … well, we think Chatwin, a legitimate five-star horse who has averaged 2.2 cross country time faults per event across his FEI career, probably could have tried harder.

“Go Chatwin, get ’em!”

“He’s gonna get you. He’s coming … he’s going to eat your burrito … here he comes … you better run … he’s coming!”

“Chatwin! You lost!”

Enjoy.

A Farewell to Fernhill Flutter

Kevin Keane and Fernhill Flutter at Kentucky in 2014. Photo by Jenni Autry.

Our sincere condolences to Fernhill Flutter‘s connections, who lost the 18-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding yesterday unexpectedly due to colic. Every effort was made to save his life, but during surgery it was found that the damage was too severe to fix.

“Butterfly” rose to the five-star level with owner Kevin Keane in the irons, completing Kentucky in 2014 — a memorably happy finish for Kevin’s many friends and supporters. They had several top finishes at the four-star level, cracking the top 10 at Bromont and Fair Hill. He went on to compete with Morgan McCue as well as Natasha Erschen, who has owned him since 2017 and competed him through the Intermediate level. Most recently he was being leased to a young rider, Nell Nicastro, and reportedly had a blast around Pine Top this spring at Training level.

Sara Kozumplik Murphy, who trained Natasha, recalls having Butterfly in the barn and says that “he was beautifully taken care of and loved deeply” by her.

“As many of you know Butterfly was a character,” Sara says. “He liked to pretend to be grumpy but was really quite a softy when you laughed at and appreciated him. He taught hard lessons, but he also made dreams come true, had a huge heart, and kept riders safe. Watching him and Kevin jump beautifully around Kentucky in 2014 was an inspiration to riders all over the world, especially those with a full time job. I’ll simply say that we are all heartbroken to lose this absolute legend of a horse and leave Tasha and Kevin who loved him the most take it from here.”

The story of Kevin and Butterfly is a sweet one. In 2010 Kevin came home from Rolex with a dream that has motivated so many riders to want to ride at the Advanced level … he wanted to jump around Kentucky himself! His coach, Phillip Dutton, found a horse in Europe through Carol Gee and in no time he was in England to try him out. Unfortunately he didn’t like him ONE BIT so of course in true Irish fashion, others were brought out of the stable for him to sit on. One of them was Butterfly.

“I got on him and only jumped four jumps, and the next day I got to go watch him compete in a small local horse trial,” Kevin says. “He had a very good professional on him but didn’t go clear on the cross country! However when I saw his gallop I bought him nonetheless, and the rest is pretty much history. He had his own peculiarities in that he would only jump from one type of ride, which was going forward to a deep distance. I learned accuracy from him or else I would have a 20 on my score card!”

“He had a beautiful mouth and a tremendous gallop that came from the mostly thoroughbred blood pumping through his veins. I learned a tremendous amount from him and was lucky enough to finish third in two four stars, and to finish in the top half at Kentucky, a week I will never forget. He ended up with Natasha, and she was so kind to him. She truly loved him.”

Natasha shares her memory of this special horse, who touched so many lives: “Butterfly was a very special horse to many people and I was lucky enough to share a part of his life. He was a member of the family, my best friend and the best teacher I could of had. He taught me through the highs and lows of this sport. He took me to my first intermediate, my first three-star, and gave me my first FEI win, but he also showed me when I was wrong, which ended up teaching me the most.”

“He was also quite the character in the barn, whether he was licking my hand while pinning his ears back at the same time or walking himself in from his pasture to his stall in the morning, because he couldn’t wait to eat his breakfast,” she says. “He was addicted to Mrs. Pastures cookies and would get into the treat bucket almost everyday. I had many great memories during my riding career with him, but my favorite memories were simply being in his presence. I wished for many more years with him, but I will cherish every memory I was fortunate enough to have with him. He was loved by many and will always be remembered.”

Rest in peace, Butterfly.

Editor’s Choice: My Top 5 Virtual Vendor Village Deals for Thursday

Each day we’ll be bringing you new deals from over 30 companies via EN’s inaugural Virtual Vendor Village (shop Thursday’s deals here), and each day I’ll be sharing my top five favorite deals of the day. Here we go for Thursday!

P.S. You can check out Jumper Nation editor Lynn Mueller’s top 5 picks here, and Horse Nation editor DeAnn Long Sloan’s top 5 picks here.

Horse & Rider Books: I have a soft spot for the naughty ones. I once paid 10 grand for a talented and gorgeous but borderline homicidal Swedish Warmblood who wouldn’t trot in a straight line; who not only had never jumped before but refused to walk past a flower pot in its own stable yard; who attempted to push the eject button on me repeatedly during our trial ride. I loved it. I couldn’t get enough. And you know what? Not only did that brat go on to win blue ribbons at Prelim and compete through Intermediate, he eventually became my best bud. The naughty ones are often worth “repairing,” but it takes some grit, some patience and some guidance. Enter Doug Payne’s book, The Riding Horse Repair Manual, available from Horse & Rider Books. 10/10 recommend! And you can get it for 20% off today and free shipping with code KYBK20. Stay tuned for details about a Horse & Rider Books giveaway this afternoon!

Fleeceworks: Judy, I’ll so miss seeing your face at Kentucky this year! One of my favorite ladies and one of my favorite booths — and one of EN’s longest running sponsors! Lucky for us, Fleeceworks is offering 10% off all orders all week with code LRK3D10; Free Easy Care Bamboo Slippers with orders over $100; 15% off Therawool Quilted Dressage Pad with code LRK3D4; and additional deals here. Plus! By subscribing to the Fleeceworks email list you’ll be entered in a drawing to win one of two $50 gift certificates. My wonderpony Princess goes in a Fleeceworks Perfect Balance Half Pad, which comes with a variety of shims so you can get the fit and balance juuuuust right.

Martin Collins: What’s more zen than a freshly groomed arena? In a world of chaos and uncertainty, there’s something deliciously therapeutic about pulling the drag round and round, vanishing the spatter of haphazard hoofprints and replacing them with uniform lines that spiral out like a Japanese rock garden. It makes me feel like I’m in control of my life. It’s good for mental health, and the health of your arena surfaces. Win win! Martin Collins, top-shelf equestrian surface manufacturer and installer, is offering 5% off both sizes of its Arena Master Maintenance Machine through July with promo code KY2020.

ICE HORSE: Remember back in the dark ages when we had to make our long-suffering event horses stand still in a muck bucket full of ice water after cross country? I feel like ICE HORSE was maybe the first company to come along and say, “This is ridiculous, you guys. We can do better than this.” I won a set of their wraps at the 2008 American Eventing Championships (thank you, ICE HORSE!) and have been using them ever since. This week, you can score a free HoofWraps Soaker with purchase with code HWS. Also! Tune in to top Kentucky finisher Lauren Nicholson né Kieffer’s Facebook page at 7 p.m. EST as she reviews post-ride icing procedures, presented by ICE HORSE.

Nutrena: Save HOW big, you ask? Not to ruin the surprise, but Nutrena is offering a $10 off coupon for use on one bag of SafeChoice Perform Horse Feed. SafeChoice Perform is a controlled starch, high fat formula that supports the caloric needs of hard workers and hard-keepers. (Sorry, Princess, I don’t think you qualify. Although she did work really hard at getting her grazing muzzle off this morning.)

So close, Princess! Photo by Kerri Benjamin.

Waredaca Is Open; Enter But DON’T Include Payment at This Time

So much is up in the air right now, and Waredaca Horse Trials (May 30-31 in Gaithersburg, Maryland) has issued the following statement about their upcoming event:

“Our event opened this week and quite honestly, we at Waredaca are as unclear as the rest of the population as to what is likely to occur next, as we all work together to conquer this virus and find out how our ‘normal’ is to be defined.

“We are looking forward to the next time we can host our event, especially with so many changes to share—Jeff Kibbie as our course designer, new logistics, improved warm up areas and the inclusion of our new DRESSAGE TEST OF CHOICE!! Now, have the opportunity to ‘practice’ a test before doing your competition ride! Further details in our Omnibus listing.

“Trying to remain optimistic and positive, we are accepting entries but DO NOT INCLUDE PAYMENT at this time. We have a great group of people at Waredaca, who could pull off running a proper event if we have 2 weeks of prep time. Our decision to run or cancel will depend on the directives of the USEA, USEF and our Governor, since Maryland is still under a State of Emergency, and what we feel is the ‘right’’ decision for everyone.

“To us, it seems that there still is much that remains unsettled and uncertain. While wanting to offer you the opportunity to compete, the safety and health of our personnel and everyone else remains foremost. We will not put you or our people at risk.

“Realistically, it feels that end of May is too soon. But expect a decision from us no later than May 15. And if we do not see you the end of May, we look forward to hopefully seeing everyone in Mid-August!

“Gretchen, Steph, Robert and the Waredaca staff”

Sara Gumbiner and Her Five Star Mount #larrythetiger Is EVERYTHING

We’re all just so grateful for a little glimmer of light, a little glimmer of HOPE, a little giggle if we’re lucky, this week. And alas, all of the above has arrived in these photos from Sara Gumbiner.

Sara and her five-star mount Polaris are our sport personified — “Larry” isn’t the keenest pupil on the subject of dressage, but he’ll do what he gotta do to get to that cross country start box. They’re perennial fan favorites at Kentucky, finishing the event on a clear with time cross country score in 2018 and 2019. No doubt they would have rocked it in 2020.

From Polaris’ team:

“To honor what would have been LK3DE Jog day and to bring a smile to those with the quarantine blues, we would like to share Sara Gumbiner’s visit with Carole Baskin and her five star mount #larrythetiger with Joe Exotic as a spectator showing off there would be jog outfit!”

Love it. Go Eventing (Someday!)

Each day we’ll be bringing you new deals from over 30 companies via EN’s inaugural Virtual Vendor Village (shop Wednesday’s deals here), and each day I’ll be sharing my top five favorite deals of the day. Here we go, for Wednesday!

Omega Alpha: It wouldn’t be Kentucky Week without our annual “Pick ‘Em Contest, Presented by Omega Alpha” — this is its 8th year running! Usually we have readers share their picks to win the event, using predicted finishing scores as a tie-breaker, but this year we’re just going to have to use our imaginations a little. We’re asking readers who they think WOULD have won Kentucky, and their answer enters them into a raffle for a “Guts to Win” prize pack valued at $300. (I couldn’t resist peeking in on the entries thus far, and whodathunkit, Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg are running away with the lead. No write-in votes for me and Princess? Maybe next year. *sigh* ) While you’re at it, visit Omega Alpha and use the promo code EN10 to get 10% off all orders over $40 + free shipping in North America. And be sure to tune in to EN’s Facebook page on Saturday at 11 a.m. for a Omega Alpha sponsored “virtual autograph signing” with Canadian five-star superstar Selena O’Hanlon

Hylofit: Speaking of our virtual Kentucky frontrunner, how do you think Boyd keeps his horses so fit? “For me fitness is one of the most important things … To be one of the best in the world, it’s the attention to detail. It’s not just riding well, it’s this feeling of being exact in your training. Linking up with products like Hylofit is trying to hone in and make everything more exact, more polished, more streamlined. It’s a wonderful instrument to really let me know exactly how hard to push them in their fitness work, and then I’ve got a clear understanding of how fit they are.”

This week, Hylofit is offering 20% off its heart monitors with code HYLOEN. Go get yours now, and maybe give that guy a run for his money next year!

C4 Belts: A wise man once said …

I think this is pretty solid advice for the COVID-19 pandemic, too. Today, you can get 15-23% off sock bundles from C4 Belts, which I didn’t even know had a mind-blowing sock department as well! This Pony Ninja Sock & Belt Combo is mine all mine. Or do I want the one with the unicorns, or the sushi … Y U MAKE ME MAKE HARD CHOICES LIKE THIS C4?!?!

ENO: I don’t mean to get all apocalypse-y on you guys, and I’m not, like, a prepper or anything, but since all this craziness has been going down my husband and I decided that we’d just feel better if we had a “bug-out bag” ready — in the event that society collapses completely and we have to head for the hills (AKA the back pasture of my pony’s boarding barn). And in that bag is my ENO hammock, which has seen me through much happier times like my annual trek to Bonnaroo and countless backyard naps. You can string it up anywhere and, boom. I’ve even seen people string them up inside their horse trailers at events! I’ve taken mine around the world, literally …

Here I am at the 2018 American Eventing Championships at the Colorado Horse Park. I was two months pregnant and soooooo morning sick, so whenever I got a moment I’d sneak off to my little ENO hammock in the woods for a nap.

Still morning sick, but at least not working this time! This is from a vacation at Hunting Island in South Carolina that same fall.

And I’m sure my trusty hammock will see me through the end times, too. No pesky virus-apocalypse-scenario gonna get between me and a good nap! And this week you can get 20% off online orders using promo code FEST2020. (Bummer of a code, ENO! I was sooooo stoked about seeing Lizzo at Bonnaroo this year….)

Sport Horse Nation: One more amazing deal for you fine folks! Not to toot our own horn or anything, but bear with me here for a moment as we toot our own horn.

Sport Horse Nation, EN’s classified site, is offering 50% off new ads this week. I might be biased, but I think SHN is the best eventing matchmaker service in the biz. After all, it’s how I found my pony soulmate Princess.

OK, toot toot! Gotta run. Facebook LIVE with Robin Moore of World Equestrian Brands and three-time Kentucky champion Kim Severson ’bout to start at 1:30 p.m. EST. Last plug: While you’re at it, be sure to check out World Equestrian Brands’ Virtual Kentucky Store for some amazing discounts on products from Amerigo, E.A. Mattes, Equilibrium and Vespucci!
