Classic Eventing Nation

Tuesday News & Notes from Cavalor

I had the privilege of spending some time at Buck Davidson’s Ocala base yesterday, and it was without a doubt a memorable experience. Many riders were having dressage schools under Buck’s watchful eye, and it was a friendly atmosphere that buzzed with the dedication of hard working riders and working students.

It’s natural to be curious about what goes on “behind the scenes” at the big eventing barns, and to be honest it was fairly low key. Busy, but quiet at the same time. But one of the most favored memories I’ll take is the smiling faces and the camaraderie of the entire team.

News & Notes:

The Cheshire Races in Pennsylvania just got a even more exciting! Organizers have announced the addition of the Mrs. Miles B. Valentine Memorial Side Saddle Race as an addition to an already bustling card full of both timber and flat races. The Side Saddle race will be held over a 1 1/8 mile track resembling hunt country and featuring natural obstacles. [Cheshire Point to Point]

British Eventing has given approval to use an alternative to frangible pin fences on cross country. The MIM clip may not be a foreign concept to some countries, but it is previously unused in Great Britain and has now been approved for use. The MIM clip gained FEI approval in 2012. Monday Video from Tredstep Ireland: Schoensgreen Hanni Gives Riding Lesson

Getting ready for Wellington 2017. If anyone wants to sponsor me let me know.

Posted by Joey Williams on Sunday, February 14, 2016

We are loving this video of Nathalie Pollard and Schoensgreen Hanni giving a riding lesson to Joey Williams, the owner and head coach at CrossFit Second-2-None in Ocala.

The 13-year-old German Warmblood mare carried Michael Pollard to a team gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, and now she’s graduated to carrying aspiring event riders over their first vertical.

Many event riders train at CrossFit Second-2-None during the winter season, and it’s awesome to see Joey come to the dark side and try his hand at riding.

We’re huge Hanni fans here at EN and love seeing her looking so great and being a total sweetheart. Joey joked on Facebook that he’s aiming for the 2017 Wellington Eventing Showcase. EN is in to sponsor you, Joey!

Ocala Horse Properties has announced the date of this year’s Eventing Prix Invitational, the third edition of the popular event which is used by many international riders as competition preparation leading up to key spring events.

A total of 36 competitors are slated to compete in this year’s Eventing Prix Invitational at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8 at Southern Cross Equestrian in Reddick, Florida.

The event is open to the public, and spectators are also welcome to attend the 1.15-1.20 meter warmup class at noon Monday, March 7, where invited riders may compete a maximum of four horses, one of which they will jump in the Tuesday Prix.

Marc Donovan will design the 1.30-meter course, which will feature elaborate jump design, a sponsor tent and plenty of atmosphere to prepare the horses for Red Hills International Horse Trials later in the week. Riders from the U.S., Canada, New Zealand and England will be featured as competitors, and the U.S. and Canada are using the event as an official training competition.

We’re also thrilled to announce that we will be partnering with this event to bring you a simulcast of the live stream right here on EN provided by EQTV, and our own Jenni Autry will be providing live commentary alongside Max Corcoran.

Riders will be competing for prize money in a team style format. Last year’s winning team included Lynn Symansky, Sinead Halpin, Lauren Kieffer and Liz Halliday-Sharp, and Jennie Brannigan won the individual honors aboard Vamor. In addition to team and individual rider honors, Brewster Walker Horse Transportation is also sponsoring a Groom’s Award this year.

The Prix is free to attend. Celebrations Catering will provide food and drink in the ringside VIP tent, and tables are still available for $600. Food will also be available for purchase on the grounds from Humble Pie Pizza, with beer courtesy of Edge Brewing Barcelona.

It’s set to be a thrilling day at beautiful Southern Cross Equestrian, which is owned by Scott Keach and is the home base of several eventers for the winter. Southern Cross is located at 13440 NW Highway 225, Reddick, FL 32686. For more information, please contact Max Corcoran. To reserve a VIP table, contact Denise Goyea.

Thank you to the event’s sponsors: Ocala Horse Properties, Woodmen of the World Insurance, The Dutta Corp, Southern Cross Equestrian, Brewster Walker Horse Transportation and Tryon International Equestrian Center.

Keep it locked right here on EN for much more from the Eventing Prix Invitational, including the entry list and more information on live streaming.

Monday News and Notes from SmartPak

These jump judges have found a comfy spot on the ground under a warm blanket!

Posted by Pine Top Eventing on Sunday, February 14, 2016

Pine Top is one of my favorite events and a great place to start off the year. I’m delighted for Erin that they’ve had some warm days out West, but all of us in Georgia bundled up until we could barely move through all the layers. Yet the sun was out, the horses were feeling fresh and we’re all definitely looking forward to the Advanced horse trials in two weeks when Pine Top will debut their CIC3*. The Wilsons put on a great event and make everyone feel part of the family!

Monday News and Notes:

The first formal invitations have been sent out for the FEI Eventing Nations Cup at Great Meadow International in The Plains, Virginia this summer. This will be the first Nations Cup to take place in the States and will also be the final outing for the U.S. Olympic Team before they head to Rio. [Great Meadow International Sends First Round of Invitations]

The Carolina International Horse Trials is officially open to accept entries. Doug Payne, who is on the Board for the competition, is looking forward to the event unveiling some exciting changes and additions this year. In short, expect new courses, live streaming with great commentary and a party you don’t want to miss. [2016 Carolina International is Open!]

A racetrack in New Mexico has suffered an outbreak of equine herpesvirus. The number of affected horses has steadily climbed over the last several days and the latest tally shows 66 horses being ill. [Number of horses affected by EHV-1 at New Mexico racetrack stands at 66]

Laura Graves and Verdades have come out swinging in 2016, picking up two wins last week at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Palm Beach. Their longtime partnership was evident, but critics (and Laura) agree that although they won, there are many points left to be had. [Graves and Verdades Go Two for Two]

Happy Valentine’s Day! Know what makes a really great gift? A sexy new off-track thoroughbred. Here are three that caught our eye this week:

You know that feel you get when you’re in love and it feels like you’re floating on air? This horse is floating on air, literally.

Slamarama (Grand SlamSenora Cat, by Cozzene) is a hot-to-trot 16.1 1/2h gelding just turning 6 years old. After a 25 start career, “Slam” is adjusting well to his new life. His trainer says “very business-like about his flatwork” and has just begun work over trot poles. He will be a star student for an intermediate rider who can approach training like a teacher and shows suitability for any discipline.

In the market for Mr. Right? Now that the Thoroughbred Makeover is over, the jewel of the MMSC Dream Team comprised of international eventer Dorothy Crowell and famous jockey Rosie Napravnik, Dare Me (JohannesburgOatsee, by Unbridled), is available for adoption!

Here’s what Dorothy had to say about the 16.2-hand, 2010 gelding: “His potential as an event horse is limitless. His personality is amazingly mature for such a young horse. His athleticism can take you from a Cadillac ride to a Formula One racecar in seconds — the Cadillac for dressage, the Formula One for cross country, and the perfect mixture of the two for show jumping.”

You’ll be hard-pressed to not fall in love with this 2010 15.3-hand mare, Maybre’s Girl (Maybry’s BoyLuscious, by Miswaki).

Feel free to replace “Maybre’s” with your own name when you register her with the USEA. Perfectly suited for eventing, she has a huge, lofty trot, is obviously athletic and her great shoulder suggests jumping ability. She’s clean-legged and is a granddaughter of Broad Brush, by Ack Ack, a sire line one sees too little of in the modern thoroughbred and one known for producing athletic very durable hard trying horses.

Sunday Videos: Ocala Winter II Action

There is a lot of action to catch up on if you weren’t able to watch any of the Ocala Horse Properties Winter II event this weekend. We saw a lot of horses out for their first time or move-ups this weekend and, in turn, plenty of smiling faces and rockin’ rounds.

Thanks to our friend, The Horse Pesterer, we have a lot of videos to show you from the weekend. Keep an eye on his YouTube page for more videos throughout the winter season.

Love Is In the Air: A Valentine’s Day Social Media Wrap

Love or hate Valentine’s Day, it’s nevertheless an opportunity to express love for our two- and four-legged partners. Luckily for most equestrians, our horses are our main love, so it’s no surprise that social media is full of gushings surrounding our horses (sorry boys and girls! We love you, too).

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Greater Houston Combined Training Association Brings Eventers Together in Texas

Inspired by the formation of an Area I Schooling Horse Trials Championship, EN is featuring more awesome local eventing organizations that are recognizing and celebrating low-level eventers in our series Schooling Horse Trials Spotlight. Know of a great local organization or schooling horse trials that deserves some love? Tip us at [email protected].

Terri Miller and "Miller"

Terri Miller has a soft spot for the Greater Houston Combined Training Association (GHCTA) and it’s people. As a former triathlete she has previous experience with three-phased sports, but when eventing was still new to her the members of GHCTA helped her through one of her first competitions, which didn’t go quite to plan.

With just four fences left on cross-country, Terri took a tumble and the dreaded “Loose horse!” shout rang throughout the showgrounds. Watching as her horse ran for the barns, she realized that since she hadn’t fallen at a fence she could technically be allowed to continue. At the edge of the woods Terri ran into property owner, Phil Sawin, and after pleading with him he said she would be allowed to continue if she could catch her horse.

“At that moment I saw someone jogging my horse towards me and within seconds I was heaved back in the saddle by strangers and cheered on my way,” Terri recounted. “It was GHCTA members that saw the situation, rallied to get me back on my way, and I crossed the finish line to a roaring crowd. To this day I still thank those random strangers for helping me.”

Terri is now the president of GHCTA and works alongside some of those no-longer-random strangers that assisted her that day. She has many official duties – presiding over meetings, enforcing bylaws, rules, and regulations – “But in all honesty,” she said, “my role can be anything from teaching myself how to set up a website, writing dog leash laws, increasing the membership, and trying to create an organization that is more than just ribbons and a banquet.”

GHCTA volunteers

GHCTA has been around for over 25 years and was created to support local venues and riders, focusing on horse and rider safety with an emphasis on education. They recognize around 15 schooling shows per year at various local farms and points earned at these events are tracked for year-end awards. GHCTA recognized shows are an assortment of three-phase events, combined tests, derbies, and new this year, an indoor eventing combined test hosted by Snowdonia Farms in Tomball, Texas.

Divisions at GHCTA recognized events range from ‘Green a Grass’ (Starter) through Intermediate, and include a unique ‘Goldilocks’ division which offers riders a bridge between Green as Grass and Beginner Novice.  Not to exclude those showing at USEA events, they also track USEA points and award separate year-end ribbons to GHCTA members.

“GHCTA gives people new to the sport somewhere to get their feet wet,” said member Cristie Quidore. “It also provides a wonderful avenue for riders from all walks of life that simply want to go out and be competitive and have fun with their horses, but who can’t commit to traveling around the country or even the Area to chase USEA leaderboard points.  GHCTA gives wonderful recognition for their members’ equestrian accomplishments on a smaller (and for many, more attainable) scale.”

“We like to focus on the schooling events, but like to recognize our riders for all of their successes,” said Terri. “One exciting thing about having GHCTA longstanding in the area is watching young riders develop into local trainers. We have a few that are even currently pursuing ICP certification.”

A lot has changed for the organization in it’s 25 years, particularly when it comes to technology. Terri said, “I remember when I would receive a paper newsletter once every three months talking about local events and points. Now, we can reach our membership with two clicks of the laptop.”

GHCTA has also been able to offer some interesting benefits to it’s members lately including clinic scholarships, a $10 reimbursement program for new helmet or safety vest purchases, and a discount on USRider membership.

The organization has seen a growth in membership and participation since it’s inception. “We used to get excited to have 50 members,” said Terri, but this year they have already broken 100 members in the first month of their competition season. Membership is a healthy combination of both amateur and professional riders.

As well as having evented up to Preliminary, Robbie Peterson has experience as an organizer for both schooling shows and USEA sanctioned events at MeadowCreek Park in Kosse, Texas. “Seeing the sport from both sides has been interesting and a huge learning curve,” she said,  “I love the people and the ‘can do’ attitude that is so prevalent in eventing.  You don’t find that in most other sports, much less horse sports.”

Amy Etheridge

Robbie has been involved with GHCTA for over 15 years as a member and competitor and has served as an officer for the past 4 years. When asked what she thinks local organizations such as GHCTA contribute to the local community she said: “Just that: community.”

“Schooling shows are very inviting for spectators, and offer a great chance for families and neighbors to come and hang out for a day and support their friends or family that ride. Also, don’t overlook the opportunity to make new friends and generally network with people that share a common interest.”

“Affiliates like GHCTA offer a tremendous service to the sport,” said Robbie. “I think the USEA should be promoting that riders benefit from schooling shows to prepare themselves for moving up to the next division, rather than creating a division that will directly compete with the affiliates.”

Terri has very much enjoyed the community that GHCTA has created – she says the very best part of being the organization’s president is being at each horse show. “They feel like family reunion that comes around about once a month. Every competition reminds me why we are part of such a great sport.”
